Really well done! There was a pivotal artist missing who brought magic out of the post vaudevillian slump: Doug Henning. He revived the passé and made it mainstream paving the way for others to follow.
Doug Henning was pivotal. He got a grant from the Canadian government to study magic and he studied with Dai Vernon. Doug changed the way people viewed magicians.
Great overview, thanks for putting this together so informatively. Important for people taking up magic as a hobby, or even a profession, to know about the history of the art, and this is a great starting point.
Really nice video. I should just mention though, despite the memoirs of Robert-Houdin being somewhat exaggerated, it's still a great read and well worth picking up.
Nicely done. You’re a good story teller and easy to listen to and understand. An interesting story too. I really enjoyed seeing the old photos and videos. I’ve been doing magic off and on for 70 years and know quite a bit about magic. But today I actually learned something I didn’t know. Hocus Pocus was a stage name for a real person? There was a Mr. Pocus? That’s new to me. Please in your next video don’t tell me there was a Mr. Cadabra (first name Abra). It would be interesting to know the origin of some of the magical terms we use today. fdavidn
David, thank you for your feedback and your kind words. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the video. Well, it may be that William Vincent used an already existing magic phrase as his stage name. But it is indeed a fun fact that I have learned only recently. Will have to do some more research on Mr. Cadabra:)
Man... IMAGINE if WHITE SUPREMACY wasn't a thing. Just how different this video would have been. It breaks my heart to think of all the WEST AFRICAN knowledge that was lost and all the ASIAN culture magic that might be (more than likely) excluded from this video. HASHTAG NO TEA, NO SHADE, but this video should be titled EUROPEAN HISTORY of MAGIC.
Eric, thanks a lot for your comment, I appreciate that. You made a very important point here and raised a real issue. This is true, a lot of material on magic history has a strong tendency of focusing on the Western world and this video is no exception, though it was not my conscious intention to exclude any cultures or countries. So the regions and cultures that you mention definitely deserve a full episode, which I hope to be able to produce in the future.

2:40 *whispers* the difference is that magicians were men, so they weren’t prosecuted.

The people interested in this video should read "The Secret History of Magic" by Peter Lamont and Jim Steinmeyer if they get the chance.
Wow..no Chris Angel?!
Sir but for me magic is one and only and for me magic is real forever.
