My mother was apart of the original cast of godspell(when it first came out and she was in the movie). I love the music of this show, only wish I was able to see this cast on broadway.
If many of you Christians actually followed Jesus;s messages . You wouldn't follow a man that turns his back on the poor , the hungry and the sick to pay the Filthy Rich and to play golf 100 times in his first year in office . You wouldn't follow a man that turns his back on Puerto Rico . Makes fun at people with mental and physical disability's . A adulterer who is even attracted to his own daughter , puts child molestors in the cabinet and KKK members . You nit pic verses that pertain to your hate and prejudice , but you act nothing like Jesus . You are all hypocrites !!!!!
@@tomadams5582 Read the bible God has used many a sinner to do his work. They repent in the end.Something good comes out of it even if the servant does not repent. God's will be done, not ours.
Exactly. It's the Gospel of Matthew, and no matter how you rearrange the music, the base still comes from God and The Holy Bible and Jesus's teachings.
They're singing about "Bless the LORD my soul!" It may not be religious, but it's definitely more than a story about love, freedom and joy (which are all totally amazing!). Without the bottom line being about God and the stories of his word, this musical "Godspell" wouldn't have even been created.
well it is based on the parables, BUT it was born out of the hippie love movement, so in a more universal take on things it is about LOVE.. but then isn't that what Jesus' teachings were about??? love thy neighbor?? It's a really beautiful show, with great songs, and when done well it's so moving :)
It may be all you say, but why then do they seem to make such a point of declaring this "not" religious? Especially if, as you say, that Jesus is Love. I go as far as to say He is the author of love, so why not declare it?
I love Hunter Parrish in Weeds, but I don't understand why is he apologizing for this being a religious production. I wish they'd taken a chance with this musical and hadn't been so faithful to the original.
I don't get why these guys are downplaying the religious subject matter for the show. Much great art and music is religious or came from a religious background. There are great hero stories that are religious. Why so nervous? You don't have to share the beliefs of the religion to enjoy the stories-- but they are religious stories. Not a problem.
The point of the show was never meant to be an accurate retelling on the book of matthew, But rather to take the principals of it and to spread the core themes of the bible which are love, forgiveness and community. The writer himself is not religious and didnt write it intending to be so. The show is completely up to interpretation, meaning each viewer can learn something from it, because it has a universal theme. In no way are they downplaying religion infact both Anna maria and George both come from catholic upbringings. The point of this show is in no way to just retell the parables but to connect them to universal themes that anyone can practice
I don't get how anyone could say this isn't a religious show. Almost all of the lyrics are holy scripture... It's a retelling of the Gospel of Matthew... Perhaps it would have made more sense to say that the production isn't a religious *service*, as in, those who attend aren't intended to worship there.
I'd say it's more about the building of a community, and using the lord as a way to portray it. Saying this is a religious show is like saying the book of mormon is a religious show.
@@granthalverson1615 Exactly, its using the gospel as a vehicle to drive the message of love, forgiveness and community. Even the writer said that he isnt religious and never intended for it to be about religion
I'm a little sad they took away the "religious" emphasis per Hunter Parrish and other members of the cast. The story is a beautiful representation of the joy of knowing and serving a wonderful and creative God!
Godspell uses stories and ideas that have become religious through interpretation by people both in their time and now to comment on these issues. Sure it is religious, but only because of interpretation. Whatever you take away from it is what it's about - a person may see the character of Jesus simply as another man who lived and died, and therefore his actions carry no higher meaning other than those basic themes. It's quite a great commentary on this idea, in fact.
In Godspell there are really only two characters, Jesus and Judas, and then everyone else is just like a performer, but like the performer has their own song and personality and stuff. So she basically played herself more or less
Not everyone follows your religion. Thus, this story means differently to every person who views it. Perhaps the story of Jesus is one of great meaning TO YOU, but have you ever thought that other people have varied beliefs? To me, Jesus is just another great man who lived and died. He was loving, charitable, and smart, but he was not, in my eyes, a god or son of. Therefore the story holds a different meaning to me. Does that make it clearer?
These kids have great voices. But fun is not the reason for this story. Who is the source of joy? Who is the source of love if it isn't Jesus Christ, The Lord? Put on a good show, but that's all you silly children are, "a show." I don't think that was the intention of Godspell.

Omg! Who was she?
robin lamont is her mom. she is the one who sang day by day in the movie, and she married a man named ken swensen. dang i did some serious research
Jaqui Swensen omg Robin Lamont is your mom?? She was my favorite cast member!!!
Because of her, five year old me wanted to sing and act in a production of godspell. Bless her and family ♡
Such wonderful memories of my childhood
Lindsay freaking Mendez. That VOICE.
I was blessed enough to witness this cast perform this fantastic show in a new, updated way. Stephen Schwartz is a genius!
The Gospel is still the message, Hunter. You cannot change the truth. It bears witness to itself.

Oh Lord, Please tell me that there will be a cast album!?!?! :D
There is
What's the song at 2:20
it's not an actual song I think it's one of the parables
@redfender93
telly rules!
There's a also a mind numbing reduction here that assumes that the Gospel or the tenets of Christianity are not about love or fun.
@WWSGeek96 it is The Good Samaritain
Who did Lindsay play?

Jesus is the one true God!! Every knee will bow and every tounge will confess HE is Lord!!! Salvation, don't leave earth without it...👍👍👍
No. This is a Christian story. You may want to discount that, but thankfully it speaks for itself.
@@pumasgoya Obviously you haven't read the script, it clearly states what the musical is supposed to represent.
"It's not a religious thing?" C'mon Hunter, it clearly is. And that's fine. Let there be plays about God if that's what your into.
So, if there is nothing religious about Godspell, why not change the name to something else? Call it clickbait or something.
