Some thoughts:
1. Don't write with true yellow inks, they are unreadable; use one with a touch of orange, as recommended here. But when drawing, a true yellow is just the ticket. My choice is Sailor Storia Spotlight.
2. Noodler's Baystate Blue is the top blue.
3. My experience using Noodler's Southwest Sunset is much less exciting then many online commenters'. However it is still very useful and currently my go-to orange. Next bottle will be Noodler's Habanero. Throatier.
4. All blacks are just fine. Differences detected via side-by-side comparison disappear in the real world.
5. I don't understand brown, purple, or green. But I do like to use all these colors in near-black tones, like Platinum Classic Sepia Black, Sailor Ink Studio 453, and Noodler's Zhivago. I need to explore the lighter and brighter tones more.
6. This video is a perfect demonstration that the way an ink looks swatched is NOT the same it looks coming out of a pen. This is even more true with fountain pens, rather than the glass pen used here. Swatches are useless, deceptive, beautiful, and fun.
7. Some colors don't show up accurately on one's home monitor. Opinionated talking and verbal comparisons are much more useful.

I prefer Habanero. It has great sheen.
For yellow, I've enjoyed the mahatma gandi ink...but it's mostly a sketch ink for me, not a "writer" ink.
My favorite orange is Diamine Pumpkin. It gleams! I stocked up on my favorite brown, Pilot Iroshizuki Tsukushi, after they announced they were discontinuing it. It's really lovely. Have you tried Herbin Lierre Sauvage? It's a beautiful green, as is Noodler's Gruene Cactus. Finally, I have dedicated a pen to Noodler's Baystate Blue, although I'm also a huge fan of Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-peki. So many great options!

It is such a nice video and the speaker has done such a great work and was so involved and descriptive that I couldn't get my eyes of until the end!
The only ink I've tried in this video is Carbon Black...I only have it in cartridges for my Preppy, but I really need to upgrade to a bottle!! SUCH a good ink for work.
Also, I love to see more of Drew's arbitrary rules!! lately I've been overwhelmed with having too many pens inked, so I'm planning to go with the 3-pen rule for a while to keep things simple :-)

Personally, I like pigment inks. I want my writings to last a life time. And I love black-grey-blue’s; my pick is Sailor Souboku. Love this ink.
What a difficult task! Kudos to making choices. I'd love to see a best palette of water resistant colors, since *some* water resistance is an absolute must for me. So many beautiful colors can't take even a little raindrop or two.

Easy... Only two companies do TRUE waterproof inks and that is DeAtramentis Document (great colors) and Super5 inks.
Quite a few Noodler’s inks are waterproof

I agree with you on tsutsuji! I'm not too big on pinks and reds but after trying a sample of tsutsuji months ago, I've been meaning to get a full bottle of it.

I have three yellow pens, but no yellow ink. Two pink pens, no pink ink. The closest is the magenta Pilot Iro Yama-Budo.

Coming back to this video again to see your brown ink recommendation because I've found that I too have an affinity for brown ink.
It's more of a "relaxed" color, but still looks quite professional and isn't as hard on the eyes as plain black. I'll definitely have to try the chocolate ink out!
I love the diamine chocolate because it's not a reddish brown, very hard to find!

I tend to follow your suggestions as I also enjoy UEF nibs and I think these suggestionswould do well in F nib pens. I'm going to shop for the Drew's Hues now!😉

Rhorer and Klingner - Solferino is perfectly placed between purple and magenta. Amazing
De Atramentis has so many great colors, Alexander Hamilton being one of them. I also love Petrol, a deeper mid tone green w a little blue in it.
Diamine, gotta give it to Monboddos Hat, deep reddish purple. So yummy. Bilberry is also a favorite of mine, deep purple/blue w some nice sheen.
Iroshizuku, Jurojin is my favorite and it was LE.. anyway, I love asa gao, medium blue.. bullseye.
Robert Oster, Fire and Ice.. medium deep teal w a red sheen.
Pilot, Blue Black, really it’s more blue, but so simple and beautiful, well behaved and inexpensive. Love.
Private Reserve, Ebony Green.. deep, green, lush.. stunning.

Great list! De Atramentis makes SO many amazing purples I don't think I could narrow it down to just one, but Lilac is a killer choice, can't go wrong there 💜I'm only *just* starting to venture into yellow, orange, and brown inks (planning an autumnal revamp of my journaling setup 🍂), so I really appreciate those recommendations in particular.
I gasped when you named De Atramentis Lilac the best purple, it’s been one of my favorites for the longest time and it was my first bottled ink!! So happy to see it get love, it’s a beautiful shade and it’s scented to boot! I really love lilacs too, so this is an ink very close to my heart

If you're a fan of "royal" purples, Noodler's Bay State Concord Grape is pretty spot on.
Okay, you get my vote and thumbs up just for choosing my favorite black. It may not be the darkest (I heard that title goes to Aurora's black), but it is dark enough, dries quickly, and is waterproof so I can highlight over it.

I just bought some of Pilot Iroshizuku Yu-yake orange, But if I knew about the helianthus beforehand I would have bought some! I'll definitely have to get some of that noodler's southwest sunset too.
I had to pick a new ink for an empty pen this week and despite having over 20, many I have not tried yet, it was a real struggle. I persevered with de Atramentis Green-Copper, but this list has highlighted holes in my collection and some great options for fill them, like Helianthus!

I've bought Lamy Vista today, my first fountain pen. I'll buy a second one soon. Which one do you suggest?
Matador reminds me of my teacher's red pen slashing through all of my childhood homework. I think that's why I prefer the less vibrant oxblood.
My preferred teal tone ink is Diamine Steel Blue.
For the best red you really should be try Van Dieman's Night Owl, it is the most beautiful red that is lovely to write with and gives great coverage.
My favorite blue is Diamine Prussian Blue. It is also my favorite ink overall. It could only be better if it was waterproof.
I love the Pilot Kosumoso for pink, but I haven’t tried the one you suggested!

I watched this vid a few days back because I wanted to branch out from the mix of blue inks I had, the private reserve spearmint is a game changer! Trying to get it into my Montblanc and Pelicans as soon as I use up the current inks in them 😂😵💫

Agreed. Horizon Blue is a fantastic blue, I just wish it didn't clock my pen so much.
I think I agree with this totally subjective definitive color selection. Those are the ink colors I would choose as a representative sample of each color (except gray).
Today's ink is Noodler's Habenero. It's vibrant enough to stand out against the black ink on my pages at work, but dark enough to remain legible.
...now if I could just get my EF nib tuned the way I like it...

Montblanc toffee brown is a very similar brown. I prefer it just a tad to the chocolate.
I agree with you Drew on some of your picks and this is my virtual color wheel of favorite inks. Some are just favorite colors and some just “happen” to match or complement favorite pen body colors.

Orange - Diamine Pumpkin
Pink - I don't have any pink inks, no opinion, I will say Tsutsuji is beautiful
Purple - Waterman Tender Purple or Lamy Crystal Azurite (Darker Purple)
Red - Rohrer & Klingner - Morinda
Gray - Diamine Earl Gray
Teal - J. Herbin Emerald of Chicken
Yellow - Ferris Wheel Press Buttered Popcorn
My exposure to inks is somewhat limited as I've only been in the hobby a few months, so this is my current list!

Great review! I’m a fan of rollerballs that allow the use of fountain pen ink. Any of these suggestions that should be avoided in using them in refillable rollerballs?
For a red ink I'd go with Monteverde's Valentine Red. ♥️
PR Tanzanite has taken over my blurple range completely, though I'd love a permanent ink in the colorway.

Noodlers tsvetayeva ( Red )
Parker penman sapphire
Parker penmen emerald
Diamine ancient copper
Lamy dark lilac
Diamine pumpkin
Montblanc 90th anniversary grey
Noodlers air corps ( blue/black)
Mont Blanc Moctezuma pierced sky ( turquoise)
And kwz honey ( yellow ).
If you consider the split primary color wheel is made up of warm and cool versions of the three primary colors, it is possible by adding in just a few other pigments, a person can mix just about any color. But, the convenience of having premixed paint is nothing to scoff. When I first started with watercolors I purchased a set of 15 ml tubes of Daniel Smith's watercolors. The sect came with 7 tubes of paint and I spent a lot of time mixing colors.
I have heard that DeAtramentis inks are manufactured so that they can mixed and mingled to form different colors. Are there other brands of ink that can do the same thing? Color is such a fascinating topic.
The De Atramentis Document Series inks are designed to be able to be mixed with each other! If you do it, I recommend only mixing a little at a time, writing down the amount/ratios of each that you mixed, and buying De Atramentis Document White and their diultion liquid for mixing, along with a clear ink shot, empty vials, and pipettes.
Great video, Drew! You always brighten my day. I have all those inks in my collection except Platinum Carbon Black and De Atramentis Lilac. (sigh) Now I'll have to get those! I am curious regarding what your favorite burgundy might be, and if you personally distinguish between teal and turquoise? For my gray, I favor Pelikan Edelstein Moonstone, which I loaded up on after Goulet Pen Company discounted it 50%. Thanks again!

Which would be a good white ink to use with fountain pens?

Really good selection but I have none of these color versions, which is not surprising as you mentioned there are hundreds of not thousands of inks available.
My #1 criteria is how fast does it dry. Being left handed makes this a priority as I tend to smear my inks. So, if you want you could start a list of inks for left handed writers.
Here are some of my choices.
Black - Aurora Black. Maybe not the most vibrant ink but it is dark and dries quickly.
Blue - Private Reserve American Blue or Diamine Regency Blue. For dryness the American Blue is tops. But for deep rich color, the Regency Blue is, well, regal and dries pretty quickly.
Red - Diamine Oxblood. Hands down a deep color and surprisingly fast drying.
Brown - Private Reserve Chocolat is the winner. It is dark and OMG, fast drying.
Green - Conklin Kelly Green is still being examined. It dries quickly, depending on the paper being used.
