  • Welcome to Designer vs. Developer, a show that tries to solve the challenges faced in the industry by opening a conversation between the two, providing take aways, solutions to workflows, tools & discussions on everyday struggles.
This week Mustafa speaks to Paul Lewis, a Developer Advocate on the Google Developer Relations Team, about if we are born with a natural ability to design & develop or whether life opportunities and our environment that we grew up in dictate our successes.

It's funny because I've been designing and developing for over 10 years and whilst I think it's one of my greatest strengths being able to do both to a high standard, more often than not I find myself losing out on roles because I'm not a specialist in one. Okay I'm inherently more of a designer than a developer, but being good at development has always massively boosted my design skills and user experience thinking. Hopefully I'll end up at Google one day where they have an appreciation for this sort of thing, and say thanks to you Mustafa for this series and making me feel as though I have a unique, useful quality not a hindering one!

This conversation was an interesting example of both parties being too excited to talk about something. It had a weird undertone of conflict, but I think ultimately the parties were agreeing on all points.
That said, I really like the main point that stepping outside of your focus into the design/development side to understand the whole picture of your projects helps create better quality work as a developer or designer.

The comment "CSS is not development" irritates me. I'm a developer, and find design *hard*. Tracking down and fixing a CSS bug can be as difficult as tracing a faulty JavaScript closure. This series, as well as podcasts like 5by5's "The Big Web Show" and "The Web Ahead", give me helpful insights into design.

Really interesting series. My team mates made of developers, product managers and designers follow closely. @Mustafa can you skew the conversations more towards the best ways designers and developers can work together or collaborate better in a team with best practices out there in regard to this? Also how the role of the PM affects should be in all of this. Keep up the good work. Thank you

If you want to talk talent, look at Menuhin Competition. Violinists know that talent does count but not to discredit hard work and nurture.

I've always thought that a knowledge of both makes you better at either and I've done for quite a few years now - designing and building user interfaces / experiences.
These days it's nearly as quick to build a prototype in React & design in the browser as it is to make something in Sketch > Invision and try to explain to a client how it'll work. I find it especially useful given the dynamic nature of applications and the comparatively static nature of Sketch mocks. Invision isn't too bad but still pretty limited.
I found Paul's background interesting - mine was similar although I was a print designer using Quark in 1995. When I got into web design a few years later I found that Quark stylesheet were almost a straight conceptual swap for CSS. I definitely think of myself as NOT a 'born' developer; even after 15 years there are aspects of software development that don't come easily - especially given the pace of change in FE dev these days.
Good series btw, have enjoyed them all.

I never managed to get designing in a browser, it always seemed to restrictive.
      Glad you like the series!

There are plenty of articles on our dev site that cover design topics which is a good start. - developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/design-and-ui/

The split "designer vs. developer" irritates me. It's like arguing emotion vs. rational thought.
    Good software needs both.

What accent could possibly be clearer?
They talk fast but that's not anything to do with the accent.
Sorry but I cannot understand your comment
