- On 9 October 1944, the Soviet forces reached the Baltic Sea near Memel after over-running the headquarters of the 3rd Panzer Army. As a result, Army Group North was cut off from East Prussia. Hitler's military advisors-notably Heinz Guderian, the Chief of the German General Staff-urged evacuation and utilisation of the troops to stabilise the front in central Europe. However, Hitler refused, and ordered the German forces in Courland and the Estonian islands Hiiumaa and Saaremaa to hold out. in the absence of heavy weaponry and a near total lack of air support, total German casualties in Courland were heavy as well, and estimated to be over 150,000. On 9 May 1945, General Ivan Bagramyan accepted the surrender of German forces. According to Russian records, 146,000 German and Latvian troops were taken prisoner, and taken to camps in the USSR interior and imprisoned for years.

First of all. Why would they have paper documents that needed to be shredded. It isn't the 1980s. All classified documents are kept in secure servers accesible by military laptops. They aren't pronted out especially in a foreign country when your withdrawing. It isn't the 1980s anymore.

We sent them to the gulags after the war as criminal punishment, 10-25yr. sentence (depending on rank) so they could rebuild everything they destroyed. POW camps were nothing more than prisons, gulags were prisons dedicated for forced labourers - before and after this period they primarily housed ordinary criminals/saboteurs who were carrying out their sentences,
Unfortunately, our leadership after Stalin was weak and revisionist, and allowed German POWS to return home in 1955 while many of our cities, towns, and roads were still rubble.
Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, UK, and France used German POW labour as well - for clearing mines, construction, or agriculture. But the deliberate and total devastation brought down on our country required a much large labour force, and more time, to fix.
Luckily, many of the fanatical German officers that we captured were sentenced to death in court - mostly by Soviet and some were extradited for trial in Poland. My grandfather actually witnessed this himself, in 1946 central Kiev tens of thousands of people amassed in the town square to watch 8 of the most notorious Nazi officers be hung. They had been responsible for Babyn Yar Massacre, he told how the crowds were cheering and smiling.

@@case3270 wrong, there was four battles on the Soviet side and five on the German side with the fourth attack being split into for the Germans. the Soviets just focused on the German mainland front to end the war.

I feel like this is over playing the "intensity" in the kourland pocket, there was fighting there but it wasn't bloody and hellish, as the russians had no need to attack it but to simply keep thousands of german troops away from the frontline
