Fantastic, haven't riden in a while at 63 years old. My twin brother is giving me Ducati 900SS. He doesn't want to ride anymore, bad knee. I'm going to take it off his hands. Would be ashamed if it just sits there.@SomewhereInside

I started riding when I was 20 y.o., and rode for about 8 years before giving it up. Riding in SoCal was no fun anymore. Too much traffic everywhere. Started riding again 18 years ago after escaping to more rural locations. I’m so glad I came back to riding. Great therapy! Will likely be out riding to celebrate my 74th birthday this week.

I'm not older, and I've only not rode for 4ish years. Even when I did, I had only rode for a few years.
But one day recently I was sitting out on the deck with my wife and thinking about what would help me be less stressed with daily life. Ive got a lot of hobbies, but none of them are really stress relivers.
Then for whatever reason I imagined my old motorcycle sitting on the deck about 10ft away and felt a little rush of excitement and a little relief, as if I was about to hop on and go for a ride. I realized how impactful riding a motorcycle was on me, how alleviating and like meditation makes you forget about everything else and just be in the moment, taking in the view and exploring new places.
It's interesting to me because I have a lot of hobbies, but none have the same impact.
That being said, I still don't have a bike, but my next will be a 2025 CF Moto 450 Ibex, something cheap, lightweight that I won't be worried about and can take just about anywhere within reason.

No matter what u ride, or why u ride, or when in life u ride….ride!
Believe if u ‘get’ the absolute peace that comes with riding…u ‘get it’. Not something that can be forced on anyone.
The absolute peace and enjoyment riding provides me is priceless.🎉

MCrider - Motorcycle Training is a great resource on YT for learning how to ride, and/or refreshing the basics. I'm one of the content contributors and coaches over there as well. I really love your inspiring content. My wife and I sit down and listen to them on our living room TV. Keep it up!

I stopped riding due to a minor crash, having kids, and financial reasons. I never really let it go, and got to ride once in a while. Over the pandemic, I resurrected the 87 Hurricane (in my thumbnail) and decided I needed to reevaluate my skills and knowledge if I was going to start riding regularly again. I also decided to throw down the coin for an airbag vest from Helite. Going back into riding as an older and maybe wiser version of myself has been a great experience; and I enjoy it so much more than I did when I was young.

    It’s funny.
I stumbled on this, because at 63 I have decided to dive back in, and I was looking at Bikes.
I have ridden for years - well, “had”.
Accidents = (1) Elderly man did a U-turn in front of me, while on a Suzuki 650 Katana. I flew over the car and landed on the road. All good - sore thumb and bruising.
( Man refused to get out of his car until the Police arrived - fair enough, I wanted to rip his head off )
    (2) Lady ran a Red light ( arrow ) and I hit her head on - flew over her wind screen, and as in slow motion I looked at her face as I flew over her car - I will forever see her eyes as she saw me - unique perspective I thought at the time…
I hit the road on my head, wearing a carbon Shoei - I felt the impact and then ripples of energy that traveled around the helmet - and essentially cracked the back of it! I’d always heard that this happened in decent “Lids” and I always bought the best for this reason ( Arai / Shoei at the time ). I was fine.
    (3) Woman almost T-Boned me and instead I bounced of the side of her car and ended up on the road. I was fine - bike was a write-off.
    (4) Man in drive way, looks at me ( I see him so I assume he did see me ) and as I come up - he looks at me again - and pulls out. Yep - BANG. RF900 - Fairing damage but I was ok.
    (5) Racing a friend on the road ( all my fault here…) and we are doing 100+ on wide open sweepers back in NZ. Long story short, I have my elbow on my knee and my knee is on the road, sliding around this sweeper……and the front end tucks ( low-side ). I slide across the apex with ankle caught under bike ( Honda NC30 ), and in the split second I push the seat with my other boot, bike lets me go and it and myself slam into a curb. Bike goes airborne and is destroyed and I slide over the curb and stop in some long grass. Set of Race Leathers are basically destroyed. My Alpine Race boots ankle armour, is worn completely away - you can see my sock.
4 Months laid up, with flattened vertebrae and two other ones fractured. Again - MY FAULT…
But, I had one to two - near misses every day for 6 years….
I was a Motor-cycle Courier, and I ran Urgent small parcel all over the City. It was a job that the amount of miles you do, the amount of traffic you deal with - the math starts to add up and at some point, theres an end-sum that is reached.
    But anyway, I digress..
I moved to the US of A, became a Citizen, bought a Hayabusa and a Honda ST1300 - and settled down…well…kinda. The Busa brought out the worst in me ( bloody thing was so addictive ) and to avoid going to Jail ( because I would often run 180 down the 118 Fwy in Simi Valley ) - I sold it. Couldn’t help myself with that bike.
The Honda went soo after, and I decided to go tooling in the Deserts ( moved to AZ ) and so I bought a Jeep.
To be honest though - and I didn’t realize it at the time - I was just burnt out. Bike burn out I bet is a thing.
So now, 16 years later - I am looking at bikes. I miss it. Your vlog in the opening - just made me sigh. Memories came flooding back in, and How I loved smelling the air and feeling “free”.
I’ve been on the fence for two weeks - and I found this vlog…
Everything fell into place - and your words hit a chord, that made me……grin.
    Thank you.
    Cheers mate. Kiwi Johnny.

I turned 62 last month, I haven't ridden my dirtbike for quite a while now and was feeling a bit bummed out about it. My knees just can't do it anymore.
I started talking to a guy at the gas station who was riding an older Honda and he told me about some of the rides him and a few others have been doing.
One of the group had a fjr1300 he wasn't riding any more so I bought it for next to nothing.
My last road bike was a ZZR1200 so riding this new bike is very similar.
I've never really gone on an extended road trip on a bike before but I'm planning out my first one now.
Winter is right around the corner here in Utah so I have time to get the bike setup the way i want.
I've never been to Mt Rushmore so that's going to be my first trip next summer.

Blind spot mirrors are a very good, and cheap, idea. You can usually buy a set for under $10. I've always had them on any vehicle, from trucks to motorcycles, I've owned and it's amazing how much extra you can see with them.

I'm still riding at age 67. Been riding on the street since I was 14. Only one serious accident early on but I got back on the horse after my body and mind healed. Now I ride only on Sunday mornings when traffic is much reduced. Fortunately I can be out of the city and into the countryside in 10 minutes. The only time I ride through city traffic is when I take the bike in for maintenance. I've never lost the effect motorcycling has had on my soul and quality of life. My riding knowledge is my greatest asset but my aging mind is it's greatest nemesis. Other health factors contribute to distraction. My biological clock is ticking a little faster to that last ride.

I clearly remember my first ride on a motorcycle, it was 51 years ago and I was 12 years old, my cousin taught me how to use the clutch I pulled away at my first attempt and the feeling of power hooked me for life, to paraphrase Steve McQueen “Riding is life, everything else is just waiting”.

Started riding with a Honda 100 at age 14, got a dirt bike then a 550 street bike which I sold at age 22. Fast forward 35 yrs and the bug was still there. Got a dual sport about a year ago and remembered why I loved riding.

I took a 2.5 decade break myself to be a * responsible adult* I went back to riding 5 years ago after scoring an early retirement deal. I caught the adv bug and bought a KlR 650. Found out after a few months this that I had to ride 200 miles of asphalt to find 29 miles of dirt. I traded off the KLR for a Honda NC750DCT. A joy to ride on the roads with enough off-road ability to tackle the dirt roads and forest trails I encounter.
At 67, I ride with a healthy amount of caution. I typically ride the speed limit or less when I can . I avoid rush hours and night riding. I’m extra cautious right now because of the deer activity.
I like to say that I’m not old cautious because I’m old, I’m old because I’m cautious

I stopped 6yrs ago (until recently) due to going round a blind corner at 60mph & being met head on by a huge foreign juggernaut, that had just set off on the wrong side of the road from a transport cafe.
I only missed a head on collision & certain death, due to another biker hitting me from behind & throwing me to the side of the road.
We both crashed, but into the field & not the juggernaut.
A terrifying experience, yet that biker saved my life that day ❤

    • @BugMotoChannel
      @BugMotoChannel  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Curious, do you maintain any sort of contact with the other biker? Sounds like you two either bonded that day or had a fist fight... :)

    • @keepitreal1547
      @keepitreal1547 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @BugMotoChannel
There's more to that story, in that he had been my biking pal for a number of years. Just the two of us would meet up once or twice per week & go for a ride. In hindsight, we saved eachothers life because him hitting me from behind at a certain angle, it would have been curtains for both of us...& his son who was riding pillion on his dad's bike.
Yes we've stayed in touch & only a few weeks ago spoke about this very incident....quite chilling.
I did actually go out a couple of times afterwards, but after three close calls with death as a biker, even though non my fault, I thought it was about time to call it a day.
Only recently have I got back into it, though on a RE Himalayan & not a super fast bike like my old Fireblade, which I still have in the garage.
I feel tempted to do a couple of videos about my biking days & those near death experiences, what do you think?

55 years ago I got my first 3.5hp mini bike. Taco style if that helps anyone. Then came a 6.5hp 4 speed Benelli mini cycle. Then a green CB350 Honda. The rest was pure and glorious history! Like dogs, it’s difficult to imagine life without motorcycles. Next spring I expect to purchase what might be my last bike. The Triumph 1200XE has my eye for the moment. We’ll see how the money flows between now and then. Nice job with your channel, well done !☀️

First time I rode was kinda terrifying. We were at a high school party out at the train tunnel on Old Cornelius Pass road and a girl needed a ride home and while I should NOT have been driving anything, I acquired a Kawasaki 440LTD and gave her a ride home. I left the bike in the parking lot of the Shari’s on Murray and Cornell road and went and got fries.

Unfortunately I started out riding by crashing a friends bike because I didn’t know how to ride!!! He was gracious and took responsibility for not asking if i knew how to ride before tossing me the keys. I took the experience with sore knees from sliding, to embrace riding and take a beginner MSF course. I had a twenty year break a few years later, but for the restart, I took a beginner course again to refresh, and have been retired since 2017 and riding again beginning 2015. Needless the second beginner course was invaluable for my restart, and the courses I have taken since have increased my confidence and straightened out my thought process for riding.

@@BugMotoChannel My 2nd Beginner class was California Motorcyclist Training Program, the CHP helped generate the content for it. The 2nd course was ‘Total Control Intermediate Rider Course’ by Lee Parks and there is a corresponding book. This one got me over my problems with cornering. The last one was ‘Ride to Live’ by the Hawthorne Police Department, all motor officer instructors. Here they teach what motor officers learn about slow control. They stress ‘anyone can got fast’ but slow speed maneuvers and skills can save your life. They also have students practice emergency braking a lot!

A little background. I’m 70 and the 1970s were my biking years. Moved to a ski town in 1980 and it was all about mountain biking and skiing. 40 some odd years later the work hard/play hard lifestyle caught up. Left knee replacement, right ankle replacement put a curb on my antics. Picked up a Tiger 900 and tiptoed back in. Here in Idaho there’s far more dirt than pavement so fitted some knobblies and have been scooting around since 22. My insanity from riding in my 20s has been completely tempered and my head swivels always. But you’re absolutely correct. What great therapy!

Great video! I had a close call with a semi-truck in 1999 that did not stop at a stop sign. I had been riding for four years and decided it was too dangerous. I sold the bike. Yet, I would stop and look at the bikes parked in the street and my wife said, "someday." Th.at day came in 2015 after having knee surgery from an injury on the job. The state gave me a one time 10k disability check as the doctor said my knee wasn't aligned. So, I bought a 2015 R3, took the MSF class and haven't looked back. As I gained confidence I bought a larger MC and a larger one after that. But I dropped that one and had to ask someone to help me lift it up. Being in my late 60's, I decided to go back to the small cc bikes as I ride alone. I have been riding a Z400 for the last four years and have had nothing but fun and I have a smile every time I ride. Motorcycling for me is wonderful therapy as it sounds like it is for you, too. Ride safely.

Rode my friend's Honda 70 all summer long when I was 14 years old. I year later I had my own, a CB125S. Sold that and got a dirtbike, a CR250 2 stroke (my current thumbnail pic) at 23 yrs old.
Sold that and got a dual sport XT600 at 29 yrs old. Too heavy for dirt and too light for freeway, plus I didn't have time to ride, so I sold it after a year and haven't had a bike till now.
Now I'm retired and almost 60 yrs old, just bought a dual sport 2017 CRF250L to try to get back into riding. I'm too old for hardcore motocross, so this heavy bike should be fine for back roads in the country and light dirt road riding.
    I've also got my eye on a 2014 CB1100, but we'll see.
    Love your channel and videos.

I’m 63, started riding at 9, motocrossed in the 70s, in college in the early 80s all I had was a 750 Suzuki. Quit completely in ‘92 to raise kids, but always kept my endorsement. Saw an ad for the modern Bonnevilles in 2012. Bought a T100 a month later. Three major changes in those 30 years: The dramatic increase in the deer population (clipped one so far, many near hits), the rise in distracted drivers due to cell phones (a daily death cheat) and the even more incredible rise in the wafts of dope smoke streaming out of cars on the road (rare is a ride without being in someone’s pot plume). Love your vids!

The last time I got back into riding I spent a summer going to every Demo Ride event from every dealer in my area. I remember Harley had two that year and I literally tried every bike they made. I tried everything under the sun from Victory, BMW, Triumph and even Ducati which I would never buy. Everything except sport bikes which don't interest me. It really showed me what I did and did not like and cost nothing except my time. I ended up with a 1800 VTX. Planning on doing the same this summer and buying in the following spring.

Motorcyclists make better drivers. It also taught me good to have a good sence of direction, back then there weren't sat navs, just good old maps and the ability to read signs. In 48 years I've only come off twice due to bad road conitions.

Started riding as a teenager. Taking trips and commuting. Stopped riding at 37 not voluntarily. Never forgot the open road. Then at 54 life situations allowed me to ride again. Took the BRC one more time. Devoured books and watched lots of videos about riding techniques. Then searched for my dream bike. Had to travel almost 500 miles to get it and ride back home. It was scary, exciting, emotional. I am enjoying the ride again.

Well I did about everything wrong. After riding from age 12 to 33 I hung it up for 29 years. At first because I was too busy. Then I'd start thinking about getting a bike and hit a deer. 3 times. At age 62 decided I was feeling half dead anyway without a bike. Purchased my new Moto Guzzi V7 Special and rode it off the dealers lot into traffic. First ride in 29 years and I must say it wasn't very relaxing. Now after 1100 miles I have my riding legs back. I try to ride every day. I don't ride around dusk in deer season. And always anticipate that that car is going to pull out in front of me or cut me off. Be able to stop or avoid it. That has saved me 3 times already.

Deer are a big problem in my area. They're worse than drivers because they're completely unpredictable and usually only seen after it's too late...

@@BugMotoChannel I never got my foot to the brake petal with the 3 I hit. They just magically appeared out of nowhere in front of the car. But one guy I know saw a deer standing in the bushes on the opposite side of the road. It ran out across the road and jumped into the wind shield of his GoldWing. They tend to be most active in the late afternoon during the fall season here in New England.

Great video you have a nice smooth voice , after thirty years off , after riding almost every day since 11 to 25 yrs old , I found taking it very easy in the beginning of returning was wise.
Found watching good you tube channels on correct braking and cornering techniques , taught me things I never learned as a youngster on road .
Would recommend Mcrider and motojitsu both guys are big on safety by correct techniques .

I got back into riding a few years ago after a 25-year hiatus. I now ride most days, even in the winter of the pavement is dry. I enjoy longer day and weekend trips, but even a 60 minute ride at the end of a stressful day puts me in a great mood. I am grateful to have re-discovered the joys of riding!

Nice video. I gave up riding in the 80's. Could only afford 1 vehicle and got tired of riding through the winter, so I traded my harley for a car. Got back into it 5 years ago with a Yamaha 650. Then moved up to a Deuce. It's my main way of staying sane.

Another good topic that resonates with me. Got back on a bike almost 3 years ago after a very long break when I settled down, got married and had kids. First bike I bought was a bit left left field but fun and suited lots of local day out kind of rides. I realised quickly that my skills and confidence (at 60+) were not where they used to be so I did advanced training here in the UK. Then I bought a second bike ... and a third, chopping in the day ride bike for a Multistrada ... yep, day outs weren't really what I wanted, it was time to get touring ... one more adventure before dementia! Got the solo touring bug now

Mr Bug, Rode a CB350 while in high school (class of '74!) and sold it for a car to go to college.
Not much riding after that bit of time. Then in 2004, after my second divorce, it came down to buying a really nice mower for my 4+ acres back in Michigan, or answer the call of the road. Been a consistent rider for 20 years and four motorcycles. The right decision.

I'm 62 and it's been about 20 yrs. I do remember days doing the back roads, being young and full of myself, today my mindset is different, a dirty bike is a wonderful suggestion to get back in the swing of things. I still have my endorsement, but for sure will do the rider class again. I doubt I'll get another crotch rocket, (and thats relative). Todays 600cc were yesterdays 1100's. I like the T7 or something of that genre, don't need the HP to power slide and flick it in the dirt. Happy Days going into 2025! LOL

Jerry's "Ride like a Pro" courses are worth their weight in gold. Even after 45 years of riding i still use the parking lot exercises after a week or two off the bike. He's an ex motorcycle cop who has been doing motorcycle training courses for many years. I think it was 15 years ago I found him.
Your Triumph looks great! I fell in love with the Bonneville line 2 months ago at a rally and demo rides. My knees barked badly with the mid controls... but I found the Speedmaster had forward controls for comfort and all day riding like i enjoy. One future day, I may own one for my next bike.
Enjoy the miles - we are Blessed to get to ride!!!

    • @BugMotoChannel
      @BugMotoChannel  หลายเดือนก่อน

That's a good question. The good news is, you don't have bad habits to unlearn. Just put yourself in a position to succeed, ie. start off on a lighter, less powerful bike - one that you'll be able to handle easily, and invest in good riding gear. That way you'll build confidence. If you go in too hard and something happens, it could turn you off of riding forever. I've seen this happen to folks...
