Good reaction. this song has 3 important points in this particular concert:
1.- It was Su's sixteenth birthday ... and who has not ever dreamed that your friends celebrate it by crucifying you in front of 9000 metalheads screaming death at the top of their lungs with the hardest heavy metal?
2.- This concert served as a break between Sakura Gakuin and Babymetal, becoming a metal band of its own, since SuMetal had to leave Sakura when he turned 15.
3.- In Babymetal mythology this ceremony represents the sacrifice of Su's humanity to become a metal goddess at the service of the Fox God.

Remember this concert was in Japan and the Japanese do not attach the same significance to Christian iconography as someone raised in a Christian culture.
"Babymetal Death" is usually how Babymetal introduce themselves at the start of a concert, but here it is used as a big, insane, messianic, pun finale. Their intro at "Legend 1997" was Ave Maria and a dub step version of Headbanger...no seriously. In this finale there are also a couple of Metallica homages in the statue and the music and of course X-Japan with the neck brace. This performance is best understood in the context of the manic excitement of Headbanger and the emotion of Unfinished Akatsuki that came before it in the concert and if you listen to all three songs together you'll get the complete operatic scope of Su-metal leaving childhood behind, embracing sacrifice and finally being reborn as a metal goddess. Also the DNA helix in the intro to this is also seen on Su's stick mic in Headbanger... Yes it's all very silly, but just go with it. #notacult.
The use of the Christian crucifixion iconography and the statue of Su as Mary juxtaposes death, birth and rebirth. This is echoed in the chant at the beginning; "Death, Death, Death.. , Su-Metal desu"...etc. The "desu" sounds like "death" to Western ears, but in Japanese it means "to be" - so the words are " Death, Death, Death... I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal". While this initially seems to be all about death it's also an affirmation of existence and being. Death and life/rebirth exist together just as in the crucifixion. Did I mention #notacult?

You have to see this song live to really understand it's impact. It's normally used as an opening song. My first Babymetal concert, they were opening for the RHCP. There were 13,000 RHCP fans in the audience talking with each other, the lights go down, the voice over starts, RHCP fans keep talking to each other, the voices of 13,000 creating a constant drone throughout the arena, even over the sound of the voice over. Then... DA-DA-DA-DA, DA-DA-DA-DA.... the opening salvo of BMD at 120 decibels explodes. slamming into you as the girls march out onto the stage. It's a physical sonic assault. You can literally feel your face melting and your ear drums screaming for help. The audience, previously disinterested waiting on the RHCP to take the stage, shut up as one, everyone turning to the stage. The ultimate, "Here we are!" attention getter., basically a slap upside the face telling them "shut the hell up and pay attention." There are fancams of the moment from RHCP fans. I specifically recall one, you can hear the guys talking with each other as the voice over starts, with one saying to the other, "Do you know who these guys are," to which the other replies, "No clue", followed immediately by DA-DA-DA-DA, to which the dude holding the camera quite clearly says, almost involuntarily, "Holy Shit." Which is the exact thought I had. I don't know what I was expecting, but I did not expect "this". It was loud. it was brutal. The exact thought that went through my head was "This shit is for real!".

I have enjoyed your reaction in which you instantly got into it. Of course they are not cult, haha. As others have mentioned, the Japanese like to use Christian items as a means of staging. And "BABYMETAL Death" is just a pun that means "ベビーメタルです。(BABYMETAL desu. we are BABYMETAL.)" in Japanese, and they have done just introducing themselves (but in this show, was the end song). But at first, I also didn't realize that such a heavy and dark vibes song was just a pun that made fun of people like that, haha. And Moa has once said, this is a song as a opening one in their shows, but she gets pretty tired because she must jump many times even though from the first song. Kami Band member, Ohmura, I am not sure to remember but, also once said, it is a pretty hard song because he must repeat the hard riffs many times and play difficult solos. Thank you from Japan.

  • @BlackArr0w
    @BlackArr0w 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

I won't explain too many things since you are going to watch the guide, and most of the meanings and puns will be explained there :D
They didn't get in trouble because christianity isn't big in japan, so nobody would use western iconography to be blasphemous, because it wouldn't make sense since it wouldn't offend enough people! This was used as a meaning of sacrifice and rebirth, as explained in the introductory video :)
They even crucified her multiple times 🤣🤣
Now you get why we wanted you to react to this before the guide? since they will explain all this part, you would have lost your chance to experience SU's crucifixation 🤭🤭🤭

Only about 1% of the population in Japan are Christian.
For many Japanese, the only exposure to Christianity is through popular culture like movies, anime or manga comics.
Or in BABYMETAL's case, through the imagery used in Metal concerts.
Fortunately most folks understand this is metaphor and spectacle.
The theme of this concert was "rebirth" and incorporated themes from 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'.
I'm sure they weren't intending to offend any anime fans. : )

  • @road-runner

    Hahahaha... nice one, thanks!
Nothing to see here, just Su-metal celebrating her 16th birthday with her friends and like 9000 fans chanting DEATH!, DEATH! DEATH! while she¡s being crucified ... pretty standard, isn't it? 🤣
Okay, now seriously, that concert was Legend 1997 (SU-METAL seitan sai) aka SU-METAL 16th birthday party and took place on December 21st, 2013 at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba.
Lyrics are quite simple: "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L" "SU-METAL desu", "YUIMETAL desu", "MOAMETAL desu", "BABYMETAL desu" "Death death death death death death..." etc Desu (the U is silent so it sounds like the English word death, pretty much means "I am, you are, we are" so they were introducing themselves. This was usually an opening song but this time they used it as a closing number. The meaning of the whole thing is the sacrifice of SU-METAL, giving up her mortal life as a human and Idol to reborn as a metal Goddess.
The beat at the intro and the final statue crumbling are homages to Metallica. The neckbrace thing is an homage to X-Japan's Yoshiki.
And... by the way... just in case... #notacult

Definitely one of the hardest and most controversial Babymetal songs. People often forget that things were done long before they were associated with a group/religion/practice/ideal. People were being crucified long before it became a Christian symbol. The noose was being used for centuries before it became associated with a certain extremist group. Even the swastika originally had (and still has) other meanings than what it's notorious for. #notacult

Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven (referring to the year of Su's birth)
It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of Metal,
she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
The gene which has been determined from ancient time
is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time.
    The apocalypse prophesied
    The DOOMSDAY. Towards it,
    There remains... little time.."
Basically, this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto the J-Pop Idol to be reborn as Su-metal the Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.

The Destruction Of The Statue is similar to Metallica Justice for All live concert in Mexico City, Mexico 🇲🇽.
The Japanese word "desu" (です) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "です" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." No relation to the death itself.
I'm not sure of its origin, but I saw long before such a character as a vampire or a death metal singer in a comic and all his "です" (desu) were replaced with "DEATH" to emphasize his character. With such an air, it works well. Without such an air, it probably doesn't work.
There is a genre named "Death Metal". The sound of this tune seems to fall within that genre, and the lyric writer may have put many "DEATH"s to emphasize the Death-Metal-ness. It might be alright to use many "DEATH"s without thinking of death if some of Death Metal bands also chose their style just to differentiate themselves rather than driven by the feeling about death. But I don't know the Death Metal well.
    MAKUHARI MESSE:-
Makuhari Messe (幕張メッセ) is a Japanese convention center outside Tokyo, located in the Mihama-ku ward of Chiba city, in the northwest corner of Chiba prefecture. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. Makuhari is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair".
    •Owner: Makuhari Messe, Inc.
    •Opened: 9 October 1989.
    •Expanded: October 1997.
•Classroom-style seating: 304 (International Conference Room).
    •Banquet/ballroom: 1,600 (Convention Hall).
•Theatre seating: 7,860 (Makuhari Event Hall).
Makuhari Messe is close to Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, and to Chiba prefecture's black sand beaches. It is accessible from Kaihimmakuhari station on the Keiyō Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The center is the host of the annual Tokyo Auto Salon (modified car show, in January), the biennial Tokyo Motor Show (in October), the annual Tokyo Game Show (video game hardware and software exhibition, in September), the annual Jump Festa (manga, anime, and video game exposition, in December), and the biannual Wonder Festival (toys, scale figures, and garage kits exposition, in February and July). Su collapsed on the stage and THEN was put on the cross. So it's not the classical crucifixion which is a device of execution. Her dead body was put on the cross so that the Fox God could resurrect her.

One of the Kamis said that this is the most difficult song they play. No, they didn't get in trouble. Crucifixion is the traditional form of execution in Japan, and this is before they played in the West, so the iconography they see and you see are very different.
Okuni, the woman who is credited with founding Kabuki (which Babymetal draws heavily on) back in the day, reputedly wore a cross. I heard Kyary Pamyu Pamyu state in an interview that she wears a cross to honor Okuni, so even a cross has a different significance.
That being said, the choreographer has spent time in the West and I am sure they are playing both sides of the fence. They knew what they were doing.

The best thing about a metal show is that they can pull off the craziest s*** on stage and no one will ask questions. Unless you're Ozzy Osborne or Rammstein.
Good thing most Japanese are not religious or otherwise Babymetal would've get cancelled long before they get a chance of fame.

This has to be one of the best reactions to Babymetal. If you want to do more, may I suggest `Gimme chocolate` and `Karate`. These are more `poppymetal` but also very good. I would also really like to see your reaction to the song `Zombie` by The Cranberries, this song has a strong message and epic drums. And hopefully maybe you can react also to the cover of `Zombie` by The bad wolves, wich is one of the best covers I have heard. Keep them coming please.

Great reaction, and glad you checked out the translation of the intro since the whole video makes more sense then. Best birthday celebration ever, don't you agree? Btw Japan is not much into Christianity, so the use of the cross, etc., is not considered disrespectful or an insult in any way. By the way, the giant statue in the back references Metallica's "...And Justice for All" alongside many other references you can see in that specific show. Usually, that song was used as the opener (it will make more sense after you watched the guide^^). Still, on this occasion, it made perfect sense to use it at the end of the show to celebrate the transformation of Su-metal (and Babymetal as a whole) from a jpop idol group to the metal queen/metal band she is/they are now. See you in the next one!

You think that was wild...Wait till you see the intro for Legend S. "In the Name Of" is the song you want to check out. On a side note...Su has been crucified 5-6 times so far. As the events of her transformation have been re told. PS: Check out the BabyMetal Reactors Resource channel spreadsheet for more links including the song I mentioned.
