- Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov (Алекса́ндр Константи́нович Глазуно́в, 10 August 1865 - 21 March 1936) was a Russian composer, music teacher, and conductor of the late Russian Romantic period. He served as director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory between 1905 and 1928 and was instrumental in the reorganization of the institute into the Petrograd Conservatory, then the Leningrad Conservatory, following the Bolshevik Revolution. He continued heading the Conservatory until 1930, though he had left the Soviet Union in 1928 and did not return.The best-known student under his tenure during the early Soviet years was Dmitri Shostakovich.

thank you for sharing this wonderful suite from Mr. Glazunov. several years ago, I decided to make a transcription for string orchestra in order to performe the piece in my hometown. And fortunately we did my director and fellow musicians were thrilled and excited, that was a delightful evening. It's extraordinary how the composer put the voices in a very fashioned way so every single voice can be heard and not sound too much crowded. And the style of each movement differe from old suite forms (dance like forms). specially the scherzo II. then the absolutely brilliant theme and variations ending with the fantastic 'Alla Pollaca'. and such a beautiful 'Waltz' at the end. GRACIAS MAESTRO GLAZUNOV. you are a gift to the heart. and a cherished son of the music. And thankyou again Bartje. listening and watching this score remainded me how lucky we are to be musicians. we hear the sound of the world so differently from others.. @@insight827 Hello, in response to your question, NO my orchestration is based on a series of videos uploaded on youtube by Hyup string orchestra, from Korea conducted by JH. The Fugue is very interesting. Glazunov is a genius.
I let out an audible "ooh!" when I heard the quintuplets in the scherzo for the first time just now. Truly such an adorably gorgeous piece.

Beautiful piece of this composer only known most of the time by his violin concerto.
The two string quartets of his elder Borodin must surely have inspired him (see passages in harmonics of the 1st quartet in particular and the beginning of the second quartet) Many thanks to Théodore Servin for the precious timing and to Bartje Bartmans

Magnifique pièce de ce compositeur seulement connu la plupart du temps par son concerto pour violon.
Les deux quatuors à cordes de son aîné Borodine ont dû sûrement l'inspirer ( Cf. les passages en harmoniques du 1er quatuor notamment et le début du deuxième quatuor)

if you want to know more about glazunov and his remarkable abilities (including having a perfect ear, and being able to play a symphony that he's just heard at the piano), check out shostakovich's biography/autobiography/extended interview "Testimony", where shostakovich reminisces at length about glazunov. he was an alcoholic who drank during lessons, and yet maintained his amazing memory. and an interesting character all around.
testimony's authenticity is dubious, although much can be found online about Shostakovich's views on glazunov
@@insight827 I think there's a recurring pattern that all things critical of Communism are dubious to Communists.
@@qwertyuiop-ke7fs I'm not a communist. Neither was stalin, for that matter. Also, Testimony takes quotes from previous interviews verbatim, and the sole "proof" of it's authenticity is a handful of signatures which only appear on the least controversial pages. I'm not saying Shostakovich wasn't critical of stalin's russia, I think that is fairly clear. I'm just saying that testimony is perhaps not the insight we thought it was.

This time crying because I will never compose something this amazing. Now I've spent 4 years studying tonal harmony at university and I am even more in awe of these composers than I was before starting. What skill! We're lucky this genus shared the planet with us.
Particularly love how playful the scherzo is :)
The waltz has an interesting vibe to it, with the little intro and outro. Both are very dialogue-esque. Perhaps a whimsical Russian version of Weber's Invitation to the Dance? Where 2 partners meet each other, dance, and depart on good terms.

Lots of charming music, but perhaps too diverse to work as a whole. Or is that perhaps the nature of a suite?
Too diverse? The main purposes of having separate mvts is to be diverse, create different sounds, and, to put it bluntly, for the composer to show off.
In essence, most works with seperate mvts will have vastly different soundscapes. Especially the later and later you get in music as there is more and more content to cause inspiration.
That's why it's called 'suite', yeah
