Having the same problem with my 2008. Tomorrow afternoon I will be taking mine apart and instilling in my Wife I'm a genius. I watched another video on replacing front wheel bearings. I went ahead and replaced both rotors and pads. My Wife said her car drives beautifully. I rarely get such appreciation so I will fix her turn signal tomorrow. Thank you for letting me tap your brain. I can't wait.
My turn signals stopped cancelling about 2 weeks ago. I found your video that same evening. Rather than take it apart and attempt to fix the handle/switch that is there I just ordered a new one off Amazon for around $30.00. With a new part in hand and the help from your video, it took me all of 20 minutes start to finish to make the change. That's from when I opened my garage door, gathered the tools, changed the switch, put everything away and test drove around several blocks. Great video - thanks so much. I owe you a beer.
Same here. 07 HHR. Canceling stopped. Then 2 days later the switch would only lift up for a right turn, wouldn't go down/left. Got the replacement part from Amazon and had it installed in around 20 minutes. Thanks!
Your video was a tremendous help. Thank you. I was unable to fix the existing switch and bought a replacement at the local Chevy dealer for $60, but you can purchase the same switch on Amazon for $30. Thanks again, Rick
Just changed my whole turn signal switch ( $30.18 on Amazon) on my 2008 and luckily I didn't need to remove the trim around the gauges and stuff...I just removed the 3 9/32" screws, separated the upper and lower parts, disconnected the 2 connectors, and reinstalled the new one....Thanx soooo much for the video as it definitely helped me have a clue as to what to do..It helped a lot..
Thanks for the video. I used it to replace the turn signal module completely. It was only a few buck on Amazon so now I can fix the old unit at leisure.
So glad to have found this! My little Cobalt is having this problem. I've done most of the repairs (all minor, thankfully) to this car, myself.. I only take the car out for weekend or beach trips but it's nice to actually let people know which way I'm turning. Thank you!
Great video. It seems like a lot of people have this issue...I hope Chevy is paying attention. I couldn't quite get my spring back into place once I reversed it. I ended up springing (pun intended) for the new part. Still, this video was very useful in helping me install the new one. Thank you for your time and effort.
Thanks for making this video.... I have a 2008 Chevy Lumina LS and this is identical. I tried looking here on TH-cam for that year replacement but searched for 2008 Chevy Lever Replacement and your video came up. Now I have my lever replaced and it was very easy after seeing your video. Thanks A LOT!! I appreciate it.
The procedure in the Cobalt is similar but slightly different, You don't have to remove the instrument trim, but you do have to take off the left dash piece (w/fog light button) to make room for the lever. It's just snapped on. (very tightly) Nevertheless, because of this video I was able to replace the part. Thanks!
@Onaspark you helped me tremendously I have an 08 chevy cobalt and when the turn signal stopped I was terrified and knew I had to take it to a dealership but Luckily I stumbled upon your video and it helped incredibly I had a friend help me and in less then an hour it was working you saved me time and money thank you so much
An easy fix if the spring is the problem, mine had a piece broken in it, so it didn't fix mine. I have a '09 Cobalt and the dash is different than the HHR. It's not as hard to remove on the Cobalt! I will have to look on Amazon to try & buy another assembly. I'm glad I came to this site though, O'reilly wanted $60.00+ for a new one!
Excellent video help me a lot but my hhr has another problem, the big door on the back side ( the hatch ) doesn't work, when i push the door is unnable to open, i openned with a screw driver in to the hatch but is complicated to insert the screw driver there, cuold you make a video about this? Thank you and congratulations for your videos they are very instructive
Also a tip for people who try this on other cars: the disassembly is similar but not exactly the same. For example: on my 2007 Malibu, the dash trim and top of the steering wheel column cover are one piece, and they come off together. Also, the turn signal assembly comes off in the same way, but it is very hard to get it out of place because it is a much smaller space. Keep this in mind when you try it in your car.
@@Onaspark08 hhr 2.4 had reduced engine power light on, car was sent to gm dealer,$930 and had to tow it back home, i pulled ecm fuse and ecm/tcm fuses to reset and it ran fine for month or 2, then noticed blinker didnt cancel and engine started missing like before w reduced eng power but now the reduced eng power light not on, havent tried to pull codes yet, have you ever had reduced eng power problems on hhr?
Reminder: It could just just be just the turn signal connection(the 1st step) I re-seated the connector(heard the tiny clicks) and then drove it around - Works! Try that first before taking the whole thing apart.
Thanks, I will post a video on the release lever. From what I have seen, there are two possibilities for this problem. 1. There is a recall for ignitions that don't let go of the sleeve. 2. Broken pin in the gear shift assembly.
thanks for the info, i would have like to see you show the way it it was suppose to work, and i don't understand the term Quit cancelling. please explain that.
when your turn is done and your steering wheel is back to center, your signal stalk should go back to center and signal should end. On my car, the signal would coontinue. So it had quit cancelling.
Unfortunately, this remedy didn't work for me so I went and replaced the switch. I still have the old one and would like to find a strip of metal that I could cut to length to replace that worn out spring. Anyone have any ideas about where I might find a suitable piece of metal stripping that I could substitute for that worn out spring?
I feel like this is what I need to do with my 06 cobalt since I have to manually disengage the blinker but also my left headlight stopped working and it's not the bulb or fuses and I'm still getting juice from the wires so the guy at autozone said the problem is with the blinker lever. is that true? I had no clue that could even happen. great video!
I used your info, got it all apart, turned the spring and put it back together. The turn signal worked one time, I smiled, put the parts all back on, tried it once again and boom, it isn't working. What do I do now?
Tried this but still have same problem. My turn signal lever will not go down to signal left, it will only go up to signal right. Could there be another problem inside the lever housing
Either way I guess I'll be buying a new lever to install, but at least that part is easy thanks to your video and pointing out the tabs to push and such
I have an '08 equinox. something I read (glanced at) said something about having to mess with the air bag and I do NOT want to even try that. This looks way easier than what I saw. Does this work for the Equinox as well?
+Glick Megan Hi, thanks for the question. I have not checked this on an Equinox, so I cannot say if this would work. The Equinox is built on a different chassis than the HHR/Cobalt. If you saw somewhere else that that you would have to do something with the airbag, I would heed their advice.
+Glick Megan hello. I have a 2007 equinox. same problem and same question regarding the air bag. did you fix yours? and if so... was it easy as this video? thank you!
I took it apart again. I noticed that the white round disc underneath had a tab that was supposed to be at 12 o'clock. it was around 1oclock. I took the black square plastic piece off after the other 2 had been removed from his video. There was a post straight up around 2:30 I had to pull back and rotate the white disc, so the tab was back at 12 o'clock. That was the problem. I put the black square piece back, then the white rectangle piece, then the last black square piece and put the cover on. the white disc had somehow rotated too far. Now left turn signal works fine.
I wish my turn signal lever was as easy to fix as this one. When I took mine out it rattled. I knew there was a broken part in there. When I took it apart there was a tiny white broken piece of plastic in the bottom of the mechanisms. I wish I could have waited to order one on Amazon. I had to reassemble what I had and head to Chevrolet to pick one up. I drove with the right signal on all the way there because I didn't align one of the pins up to the switch slide.
+DLCShark Don't know if you're still looking for an answer 6 months later, but the answer is probably not, since the car in the video is GM and yours is made by Chrysler. They're different companies, so they'd be built differently.
Would someone help me please? I was very stupid when I opened the cover off and everything just went everywhere and now I don't know which part goes where. from this video I learned where some went but there's this little spring I think came from inside but I have no idea where it goes. sorry I'm stupid.
Thanks for sharing, but it’s not an absolute fix. Mine had a tab broke off the white plastic part under that spring plate. The tab that broke of is meant to grab a small coil spring, which centers the white plate. Bummer... I was hoping for a cheap fix.
Do you have a bad bulb? This vid is for turn signals that don't turn off after the turn is made, it will Sometimes work, and the ossiferous for removal of the unit are for hhrs since cobalts have to have a few more pieces taken off the dash to get to the unit
Thanks for the video I watched it a few days ago and you made it look so easy, but rather than fix the switch I ordered a new one from gmpartsdirect.com and received it in 2 days, just got it and it was done in about 15 minutes.
Unfortunately, this repair didn't work for me, the blinker now has to be held down in the left position. I kind of knew that that would happen though, cause when it originally broke it used to do that, and it eventually would only hold in place, but not cancel. Anyway, I was able to order a new turn signal assembly on Amazon for $30, so now I'll still be able to have working turn signals.
I believe the question is "how do I turn on interior lights". It depends on model year. Later years have a button near the dome light, older models you push on the lens itself. Good luck.
Good video..I would probably F it up and lose those iddy bitty parts...but I'll probably manually cancel until I can get a non Chevy car. The HHR was my first Chevy.. and it seems like a very cheaply made car. not a fan of my car.lol
Dealers upsale.. they're more expensive. Going to a dealer for repairs isn't always the smartest thing.. try another, reputable, mechanic. Plus, repairs are expensive for ANY car.. I've had GM (00 Chevy Malibu) compared to Toyota (05 Camry) most all my driving life.. i just bought an 09 and regret it, its a cheaply made pile of junk from mexico and the parts are so expensive, the dealer wants 400 to replace the entire door panel for a broken plastic handle, the cheapest I found for the handle is 60 bucks and you have to drill the old one out..ill never buy another gm product.
This guy does a flawless job in showing how to replace the lever. It's easy to do if you follow his instructions.
7:55 important point about pushing the tabs back up into place as they don’t snap-in automatically. You’re one of the few channels to point this out !

Thanks for the video. I used it to replace the turn signal module completely. It was only a few buck on Amazon so now I can fix the old unit at leisure.
Very, very, very helpful video! Thanks so much for making it! I just bought an HHR and it has this problem. Now I know how to fix it easily.

This was perfect..it took me 10 minutes to replace the lever with a new one I bought off of Amazon for $25. Thanks!
Thanks, fixed it myself using your method. Works great now!
This video is right on time. My HHR just started doing this. Thanks for sharing!
HI... your video was perfect!! WHile I did not "fix" the turn signal arm, I simply replaced it, but your remove and replace part was great. Thanks!!
@Onaspark you helped me tremendously I have an 08 chevy cobalt and when the turn signal stopped I was terrified and knew I had to take it to a dealership but Luckily I stumbled upon your video and it helped incredibly I had a friend help me and in less then an hour it was working you saved me time and money thank you so much
Thanks Bro! That was on of the easiest repairs I have done on a vehicle.
Awesome video. I had the same issue as Tinker. I was able to put it back together and ordered the part from Amazon. Again thank you.

Good to hear from you, Guy. I'm really happy that the video helped, nice to know that Amazon has them for such a good price. Garrick
You saved me money & time! Thank you Sir!
Great video! Can you do one that shows how to use the release lever to remove a stuck key in an ignition. This seems to be an ongoing problem. Thanks

Saved for HHR/Per Glenn/Turn Signal Lever
Thank you, Sir for the video! Helped me out tremendously!
nice and easy, thanks for the video, straight to the point.
thanks the video help alot. hope you do more videos for HHR. keep up the great work.
Don't have to worry about it the arm is broken ofhsr part is there I just do it manually 08 hhr
Great video! worked like a charm. Thanks.

Should I just replace mine if it got cracked? Was gunna do this until I realized the turn signal was cracked. Thanks🙂

My left turn signal when I turn on but the right turn signal will turn on what do you think is wrong with it

If you are getting voltage at the bulb connection, then, you probably have a bad bulb or no ground connection.
Thanks for the video! I like the brushed finish door handles on your HHR. Are those factory or aftermarket? I'd like to upgrade mine to that finish.
Rich W Hi Rich. Just getting back to my TH-cam account. That is factory door handles. Thanks for the thantks!
Same problem on my 2006 HHR. GM really knows how to make junk.
I used your info, got it all apart, turned the spring and put it back together. The turn signal worked one time, I smiled, put the parts all back on, tried it once again and boom, it isn't working. What do I do now?
Buy a new one on Amazon for $30 and put it in like half the commenters did

+Glick Megan hello.
I have a 2007 equinox. same problem and same question regarding the air bag.
did you fix yours? and if so... was it easy as this video?

does anyone know if this would work for a 2007 jeep grand cherokee?
Thanks. :D
I just replaced mine.
Well is more hard in the Saturn Sky, have the same problem like your HHR.
In the end I gave up and put everything back inside
+Pepe Moya I'm sorry to hear that you were unsuccessful. Did you end up getting it fixed, or are you living with it for now?
Did you unplug the battery? While dojng this

George Sangalang it cost me 55 how stupid i was
where is the neutral switch
I am not sure what your question is.
Ooh, that's too bad. I hate buying from the dealer, but sometimes you have no choice.
