    TKC Architect has very similar elements to the RD series of knives made by Justin Gingrich, and then picked up by Ontario. A very good thing in my books. The high saber grind, generous deep choil, and pommel specifically. Only fitted with really nicely contoured handle scales as opposed to the flat slab scales of the RD. I don't think you could go wrong with either the ESEE, or the Architect. A great design produces many similar offerings, just with subtle changes, and these are in-hand proof of that. Nice review!

      I just saw this comment for some reason but totally agree! Both really solid choices. I guess it just comes down to the price and how much you prefer one over the other in hand. Thanks Sean!

    They now make the 6.5 Field Buddy in CPM-3V so I definitely plan on getting that. I am a knife collector so I already own several ESEE knives and Tops knives. Just recently found out about the Architect Brand of knives and I'm loving what I'm seeing so far. Thanks for comparing it with the ESEE 6. Haven't seen any other knife reviewers on TH-cam do that yet.
    I'd definitely agree that the ESEE 6 Clip Point (the version with the sharpened top edge which isn't in this video but I do own one) would be better in a knife fight but honestly even professional soldiers and mercenaries will very rarely be in such a situation where they have to use a knife for combat instead of their primary weapon lol. A dagger would be superior to any fighting knife in that situation anyway. Great review!

    I'm a huge fan of ESEE knives, but that Architect is looking really nice! I'm liking your sheath setup as well. I have the G10 scales from knife connection on my ESEE Izula, 4, 5 and the 6. I'm seriously thinking of buying the architect blades soon.

    Price and blade steel are the two major variables you didn’t linger on, but 1095 for $120 (Smokey Mountain) tips the value of the ESEE 6 for me - just bought 4 for my kids for Christmas!

    • @5MinuteKnives
      @5MinuteKnives  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      For sure (because they are the same steel). The difference in performance really comes down to grind, finish, and heat treat. Th architect has a smoother "working finish" and a saber grind for better splitting. Tops is said to be about equal to the Rowen heat treat. For me, it came down to the warranty. Esee's lifetime warranty wins it for me.
      That's awesome you bought them all Esee6's. You're clearly an awesome dad...

      I agree 100%,Schrade has some decent knives and some in 1095 but the heat treatment is hit or miss..Ive had Chinese Schrade knives in 1095 that are absolute beasts and I’ve also had some that were over heat treated making the blade far too brittle and some that were under heat treated that were too soft and had poor edge retention.if you get lucky you may end up with a real gem of a knife for $30-$50 in 1095 and a decent thermoplastic kydex-like sheath..I have one (can’t remember what model it is) that is 1095 with the surprisingly good thermoplastic sheath with the ferro rod loop(ferro rod included) and micarta scales to boot that I bought several years back for around $40.I bought it back before I was really collecting knives when I refused to spend anything over $80 on a knife..it’s amazing how quickly things changed for me as I now own knives that costed over $500 and I rarely spend less than $100 on a knife but I still own 3 Schrade knives that turned out to be gems but I’ve also had 5 or 6 that were duds

      Yes it’s due to the heat treatment. I have/ had many Tops and Esse blades. Never had any issues with Tops while I broke one Esse and cracked another. In stripping and polishing both brands I have never noticed a differential in Esee’s steel.

    Done alot of batoning. Id bet the architect works great with the sabre grind. I live in washington state. Rains almost every day in the mountains in fall and when it rains it rains throughout most of the day and night. This really tests you in starting fire. Everything is soaked. Have to baton more than id like cause im not in dry new mexico anymore where there is very minimal and usually no wood prep. Ive noticed where an ontario sp 5 flat grind .25 thick steel had trouble batoning thick wood i tried a 3/16 thick bk7 sabre grind that went through way more easily. Something to be said about sabre grind.

      Exactly (and well put). Since this video, I've gravitated more to the architect 5.5 instead of either of these to be honest. The saber grind even seems to push better on that one even with thinner stock. I like the points you went into but price is my factor. I love a lot of tops designs but price is why I only own one. Esse I’m not a fan they are on soft side. I’m more Ontario.
    Let me throw this out at you military design ie tactical. People that never served have this thing in there head military equals fighting knife. Very far from truth. Also remember Kabar was ment kill bear because a guy killed a bear with that design. Also a old man killed a bear with a buck 110. My point being all knive are capable of killing military knives are usually ment to be versatile because you might have to open a can then kill a snake I know because I watched my first sgt. do just that. In Dugway Utah. You need to stop worrying about others opinions an think of what works for everything. The number one rule in survival is you only have what you have. I always carry a folding knife an it’s big but I always have it. Kits an bags are nice but how often do you have stuff on you or near you. When boom I learned my mistake when I survived a home invasion I normally didn’t carry my knife when I was home. Also we lived in communist Maryland guns are impossible for lawful protection. Anyway I flew off topic because of tactical comments. That thinking drives me crazy because it is what lead to me being unprepared which I changed. I lived in same neighborhood for 12 years so it’s not like it was expected but when the love of your life yells help an I couldn’t help it crushed me broke my arms an ribs. So you can’t think of a time I can’t forget a time I wish I prepared for. I’m not a regular old vet either I was a army airborne ranger an it happened to me
    Sorry my biggest thing about these knives is price.

I think once you get into the 130+ to 180ish range, it's all about what you like, but if you're lookin to save a few bucks, Esee for sure. And agree about tops (I've only owned a few for the same reason.) To be honest, I ALWAYS have a pack of some kind either on my person or near me (especially these days). PLus, I'm an EDC junkie, so I also have my gadgets, firearm, lights ect... Just makes me feel better. The flat grind is 90 percent of my hangup with esee 6. Secondly its a tad thin. This is why id trust a bk7 with my life instead if i faced oblivion. This architect 6.5 is perfection i think. @davidnoot4995 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Architect is heavier. That’s the difference. It would chop a little better but the 6 excels in finer work and is lighter to carry around. And for how light it is it holds up like a beast with the heat treat on that 1095 carbon steel. The tip won’t freakin’ break and if it does ESEE will replace it no questions. Years ago I had a ESEE 6 and a Becker BK7 in my hands and chose to get the ESEE. I liked it so much I bought 8 more ESEE knives. They really just feel like quality to work with. The knife I bought each of my two boys was the ESEE 6 both from The Knife Connection (TKC) with the G10 scales. They make a 6 with a sharpened Swedge if you want tactical. Neither of the knives you’ve shown really have anything to do with tactical. They are both woodsman knives, although, if I were in the military I’d go with the ESEE 6 out of the two mainly because it’s lighter and yes, you could use either one for fighting if you had to.

    They make the architect 5.5 in CPM 3V which is far superior to 1095 and better for the money. I want to like Esee but the lack of quality keeps me from getting one. 1095 tends to rust and the coating Esee uses wears off easy so it's basically useless. Esee makes an esee 3 in 3v as well. Ironically one of the few the owners broke by accident. I've owned a lot of both tops and esee knives. I like to patina many of my esee knives and my tops bead blasted finishes tend to come off pretty easy as well. I like their working finish.
