    *I'm deaf in my right ear which is why I'm not wearing headphones. I know, it's a bummer not to get the panning sounds. It's also been a bummer to only have one ear my whole life for lots of other reasons, like, playing telephone growing up, I was terrible at it. But, I'll be ok, and I'm getting both channels in the earbud, thanks for your concern :)

    Basically she was sexually abused by somebody in her original record label (or a producer, I forget), and then right after it got bad they also dropped her from the label and she had to start the grind all over again. The scene where she's in the bath is a recreation of the night she had a breakdown over it in her small walk-up apartment in NYC (kind of the night she became Lady Gaga). There's also a scene which represents her time at the prestigious Tisch School Of The Arts and how she never felt she fit in there, even though getting accepted was a high honour (when they're all watching her from above and she's in her bedazzled denim). During the montage at the end you can see her going to the bathroom to throw up (bulimia), falling down the stairs with her keyboard as she heads to a gig, destroying her own belongings, bleaching her own hair in the bathtub, all of which is true and autobiographical. But obviously she never blew up any cars... that we know of 😂 Then the video ends on a positive with her and her friends dancing in the streets, and her on the way to meet with Interscope Records (her current record label).

    What Gaga was describing in the beginning was dissociation and memory loss caused by PTSD, and yes, you were right in your guess that she was a victim of sexual abuse. She was abused at nineteen by a music producer and was eventually dropped by the label. The video is very based on that life experience, I think even the set was based on her studio apartment she had at the time.

    I will never understand why this song underperformed on the charts. it’s one of the best on BTW album

    • @LoneWolfeMedia
      @LoneWolfeMedia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Wig Light the BTW era was kinda the beginning of Gaga’s commercial downturn. Each single did worst than the next and I think the general public was starting to see her as a one trick pony, which we know now is not true. MTN was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. If it had been the first or third single like it was supposed to, then it would have done much better. It’s one of her most underrated tracks.

      I think it's because there were already 4 songs released from the album so the public got some Gaga fatigue by the time this song was released. Also the video being super long made it hard for people to follow and enjoy the song, just guessing. Anyways I agree with you that it's one of her best and I also enjoyed the video very much too. Gaga is like that Top 40 mainstream artist who's just a little over the head for Top 40 mainstream audience.

  • @mrmarco1204
    @mrmarco1204 4 ปีที่แล้ว +123

    She bleached her eyebrows for this, in fact she does it several times. The "no intimacy for 2 weeks" part is a reference to her sexual assault. The last scenes where everything overlaps and it's chaos showcase her struggles with drug addiction, eating disorders, her bringing up her keyboard everytime she goes out to find someone who listen to her music(before the stardom), etc. This was her peak and it's truly HER best video bc it showcase her story, the cinematography, the fashion, the art direction, etc. In conclusion an absolute masterpiece.

    @focz8180 4 ปีที่แล้ว +95

    Okay I'm going to add a few more points to explain the video and hopefully people read this comment :)
    The video is actually autobiographical, and is about her past and her struggle to make it in the industry: - The video is a retelling of events that actually happened in her life, but she made it more creative and beautiful than what really happened, hence the quote about her past being an unfinished painting and filling in all the ugly holes. She took her pain and made it art.
    - She was sexually abused by someone in the music industry, a story that she only told in 2015, a whole four years after sorta kinda telling us in this video.
    - She was dropped very quickly from her first record label after she thought she'd found her big break, hence the quote about doing it all over again.
    - She actually lived in a small apartment building like in the video, and really did have a mental breakdown and bleached her hair in the tub. That was a fairly accurate recreation of what happened.
    - When she's being intimidated by the people at the academy represents when she was studying at NYU' Tisch School Of The Arts.
    - In the montage at the end you can see clips of her pulling her piano down the stairs from her apartment to get to a gig, pretending to eat in front of her friends to cover up an eating disorder but the toilet door won't shut for her to throw up, dancing with some of her real life friends who were there since the beginning for her, etc. And it's all real and happened.
    - At the end we see her nervously getting into a cab with Interscope Records' address on her hand, which is the label she is still currently signed with.
    Fun facts: - Those cars actually exploded behind her in the video and she was actually that close. No CGI or effects, and they had one shot to get it. Apparently her mum left the set crying and couldn't watch, because Gaga was too stubborn and wanted to do her own stunts. - It wasn't supposed to be raining, and they tried to shut down production, but she told them to roll the damn cameras and she'd pay for any damage, because they were lucky enough to get free rain

    Your interpretation once again was pretty accurate
    If you noticed during the dance sequence she was dancing in heels while the rest of the dancers are wearing sneakers . By this, she was trying to depict the hardwork that she puts in her career,and also we see that eventually she moves from dancing behind to dancing at the front and center of the class depicting that if you work hard enough you will get to the top.
    Also she's wearing torn up tights and a bra top that's a size smaller than her , this depicts the fact that when she lost everything and couldn't find a record deal and couldn't book any shows she had just her natural talent, traumatic lessons and old inspirations to live by.no one believed in her but her hard work and talent spoke for her.
    With lady gaga vidoes every single detail is meaningful.

Now I am 22 and I am an anorexia survivor, I am what I am today because of the bruises from dextrose that marked my skin.

    I noticed a lot of things that I didn't notice before so ty (like I can't believe the no intimacy line flew right over my head, and the thriller nod was cool too). You got a lot of the major ideas of this pieces and I like what you said about the makeup and outfits cuz those are forms of expression for her and a power move. There's also a lot of the tiny details that is hard to catch. Like when the camera zoomed out, it was meant to reveal that the hospital was also kind of like a psych ward ish with all the ppl running around, which may add to the idea of mental health and ptsd.
    And the bedroom scene where she gets the call, that was very much something that happened in real life. Gaga said that she absolutely lost it when they dropped her from the record label.
    Moreover, the ballerina image appears a lot, and I think it represents orthodoxy and prestige. Someone below mentioned that the scene where she walked in and everyone was weirded out by her and looking may link to her time at NYU Tisch (she later dropped out because she thought she can learn more about art herself). The ballerina was shown showing off at 11:27 and she mocking her back is like her saying that I won't be traditional. Later on, during the intense overlapping part around the ballerina was in the bathroom 21:06, the ballerina was judging her as gaga walked in and everyone walked out, which may allude to her time in hs or whenever where she felt out of place and bullied. During the dream sequences where she was the ballerina on stage and she fell, grasping onto the other ballerina's legs, oh man that was intense.
    But during that crazy overlap, a lot of things happened: she carried her keyboard down the stairs cuz she used to do that whenever she got a gig, she was frustrated with the piano and she finally let someone help her, she threw away her cigs, she puked (eating disorders), and much more tiny things. Ugh the art, the detail, love it.

    (about Judas video reaction)
    Wow congratulations because you are the first I see that I understand the context of the video and the song, the majority who react take it very hard as the video is very religious and more with the name of the song .
    And if it is basically being in love that is bad for you even though you know it is, and also by loving a person so much that you even love him with his sins and bad things, but you still love him
    Pd: IF you plan to react to more videos and music from gaga put it more in context how in this and then look for their meanings, like for example in the album The fame Monster, each song represents a fear

The changed in the bridge where the sound is very aggressive and very fast coz it's like where you lash out and you come to conclusion that you accepted your flaws and you celebrated it.. It's my fave part of the song. Gaga's bridges are really very good. ❤️❤️

    That was a really good reaction. Thoughtful & intelligent. At the very end you see her rise like a phoenix from the ashes. She's a true artist in the Romantic tradition - creating out of suffering, failure and the rubble of life a work of great beauty. This must have been salutary for her. She's an artist way ahead of her time.

    @SuperJersh So looking forward to this! You seem to pick up the clues in her stories pretty well for watching only once. Dont know if you recorded yet but I hope youve noticed that Gaga vids 1) ALWAYS have a story 2) with several layers of meaning (and sometimes perspectives) 3) told through seemingly disjointed aesthetics and scenery but 4) if you pay attention, you can def pick up what shes dropping. Please keep that in mind as this is Gagas most personal video and she reveals a LOT about a very painful and transformative time in her life. The prologue story is clear, just put the clues together.

    Probably the deepest song we ever got from her, and that's saying a lot.
    You should react to the whole BTW era, Gaga is one of those artists that we only get once every 10 years if not 100, besides Madonna no one has shook the table like she did.

  • @mirandapillsbury7885

    She did the fashion commentary to remind us that the music video is an artistic expression of real life events. Like she is narrating to us that what we are about to see is only a beautiful / sugar coated version of real trauma she experienced. I mean she even says that she is controlling the narrative of what we will see when she tells us to look at the nurses great ass and then the screen shows her "great ass" a few seconds later. Same thing with the fashion hats. She is telling us she decided in her imagination to tip the hats so they look like French Berets to make the scenes less saddening..and more light hearted..more FASHION / superficial.
    also this music video is sort of a reference to the sexual violence she experienced when she was younger but also about how right after she was dropped by her record label right in the midst of a horrible period in her life.

    Gaga was raped at 19 by her producer. She was also dropped by her label and she worked hard to get picked up again, which she did. The video is essentially about her going from her lowest point where no one believed in her to, where she is now.

    First, your interpretation was on point. It is autobiographical. She was sexually abused, had a mental break and got dropped from her first record label. She used all that pain and struggle to reinvent herself. In the video she also shows clips of the hard work she went through carrying her keyboard up and down her walk up to perform at bars, her struggle with eating disorders, and the hard work it took to build her brand.

    Seen a few of yours now and I'm loving this one! I actually connected all of her videos too, like into a story, and this one was basically her dealing with the loss of her husband after a murder attempt that almost killed her too, and now she's marrying the night and doing the one thing she knows how to do to not only be successful but to honor the memory of her late husband.

    Jersh! I have a great video idea for you. One of the most fascinating things about Gaga is how she writes all her songs on the piano and then the magic of turning them into her pop anthems. You should watch her 2 performances on Howard stern show. “Edge of glory “ and “hair” both just her and the piano and my favorite performance of her. And then watch the real version of the song. And compare. And talk about it.

    You don't have to review it, but you should really look for her live performance of this song on Alan Carr's Chatty Man. That performance cemented her as my favourite pop star. I knew she could sing and perform etc. I didn't know she could sing like that.
