If the ref would have let Rose hammer fist Zhang for another 20 seconds, the outcome for Rose would have been the same but Zhang would have had a broken jaw, a severe concussion, and who knows what else. The rules are simple. The athlete must be able to defend herself. If she can't, then call the fight. Zhang was doing nothing to protect herself.
