Just imagine walking through ancient Japan and stumbling on a jam session.
You can actually do this today, usually on the weekends, and typically in parks. More prevalent come any holidays, but less frequently just some performers practicing in public for enjoyment.

This wouldn't be the kind of music you'd hear in "ancient" Japan. For one, you're actually thinking of Medieval Japan, and even then, the style of Taiko drumming and Shamisen playing showcased here are actually pretty modern. Tsugaru Shamisen only existed since the late 1800s and Eitetsu Hayashi actually invented the style of Taiko drumming he plays here
man, watching him play the drums like that makes me want to get back in to playing. I didn't want to be a noisy neighbor and I couldn't afford an electric set, but now I might be able to swing that expense. It was so cathartic banging on the drums, I miss it. It's probably been 30 years now since I last Really played on the drums.

same dude, i think the reason why our neighbor moved out of their place was cuz of me lol.
i used to own a snare drum, left it in school and never got it back cuz of the frickin pandemic. don't drum anymore, at least for now and i only knew bout the basics.
i think it was for the best that i don't drum anymore, i don't know a quiet place to practice without disturbing anyone, and whenever i do it somewhere public i often get called a show off which just throws me off.
might just do it again someday when i have have a good budget and a decent place to do it at.

the spacing in-between my room and my other neighbors is similar to a "favela" though were not squatters.

Note carefully the big drum seen in the long shots. After this performance, the drummer moves to it, and there is another almost 15 minutes of tour de force Taiko/Shamisen amazing play.

I should also point out that this style of Shamisen is also quite intense, he is also working hard.

Shinn Ichi's timing blows my mind on that part of the performance....and then Tetsu brings it right back to him.
Truly one of the greatest performances i've ever seen / heard.... i LOVE it.

He's playing tsugaru shamisen the strongest way to play shamisen.
Just came from another video of these two. The drummer spent the whole time at a single drum bugger than he was. Brilliant!

I am on summer island .
I primi ad impiegare lo shamisen pare siano stati i biwa hoshi, i musicisti ciechi che cantavano brani vocali accompagnandosi con il suono del biwa.
Questi modificarono le caratteristiche dello strumento e cominciarono ad utilizzare il bachi (撥,plettro) per suonarlo.
Le altre modifiche apportate allo strumento furono la forma della cassa armonica che divenne quadrata e più grande rispetto a quella precedente, la forma del manico e le pelli usate per rivestirla. Invece della pelle di serpente utilizzarono quella di gatto o cane.
