Luckily it's working for me (I don't use Monoxidil) The side effects I experienced (I'm 50) are very dry skin and hair (which is causing itching), and loss of hair on the rest of my body. I've had one hair on my chin all my life, and it no longer grows, so bonus.
Yes, I'd love it too. I've been taking it once a day at a low dose for a few months and have seen decent results in terms of leg and arm hair, acne, and head hair(sadly lol) it's been really good, but my doctor didn't really explain it very much, it would be interesting to know why a low dose can help me lose hair caused by my pcos, but can also help people regain hair at high doses under different circumstances. What a unique drug.
I'm taking spironolactone 100mg a day for hormonal acne but I have noticed within a month all the excess facial and body hair has significantly decreased. At one point I had to take 50mg because I was peeing too much and I noticed the hair came back 😅. But I went back to the 100mg and the body hair is disappearing and/or thinning.
That was really interesting. I have started using a shampoo with zinc pyrithione to alternate with my regular shampoo and it really helps my thin hair and oily scalp.
@@nm-xu2ik At the moment it's Kerastase Specifique Bain Anti Pelliculaire. I know it's a mouthful. A bit of an investment but Head and Shoulders just didn't work for me. My hair just doesn't like dimethicone as it tends to leave a film on my hair and weighs it down. The Kerastase one also contains salicylic acid. It does contain sls though which you might not be so keen on. Just thought I better mention it.
I used to take hormones for about a year. That's include Spironolactone as my anti androgen and estrogen. You really need to be monitored while using it. I remember experiencing hard time breathing and dehydration.
I'm glad I found this video because this med was recently prescribed by a dermatologist. I asked her and the resident about the side effects, and they only mentioned potassium, low blood pressure, and more frequent going to the bathroom. I researched the med but obviously didn't do enough. Based on your video, I may not take it. I've ordered a hair analysis (will have a consultation with another doctor) and will see what the results show.
I have PCOS and spironolactone is probably the one thing that has made a difference, but i would have to say you have to take at least 100 mg, i took 25 mg for a long time and it didnt do much.
I would love to see a video on spironolactone for hirsutism and “peach fuzz” too. Also i would love to know if excess facial hair is still considered hirsutism If the hair is “peach fuzz” and not course. Thanks!

So...it's been a month since I started Spiro. I'm seeing some hair growth, little hairs coming in! The most significant results have been with my skin though. It is soooo clear and I've had maybe one or two pimples, nothing like the ones I was getting before. I'm hoping that my hair comes back soon, I know it takes a long time but I keep praying and trying not to stress over my loss. I've always had really nice hair so this is just devastating to me. I'm only using Spiro and hair growth oils. I'm terrified of Rogaine.
I've been on spiro for over a year and I'm finally at that spot where a ton of hair is growing on my head. I can definitely see a difference, however it took me a pretty long time.
@@shenell1185 I took 50mg/day for a little over a year and have started to see myhair grow back. I had an appointment with my dermatologist last week and talked to her about how I'm seeing success with my hair and skin and she said I could move up to 100mg/day. I'm loving it so far, no real side effects aside from noticing I'm a little tired and less motivated to workout 😅.
I’m also on spiro for a little over a year and my skin has totally transformed!! It is so clear and no more cystic acne. I’ve also noticed hair grow!! Only big down side is the frequent bathroom runs. I’m taking 50mg a day doc Said take twice a day but I could never.
I'd love to hear your take on Truth Treatments 5% retinol gel. I just finished watching a video review from someone who used to use prescription retin a .1% and switched to this product. Just curious what you think about the product/ingredients!
While I appreciate your point about seeing a dermatologist in person, the reality is, it's extremely difficult to get a referral to one on most medical plans. I am on medicare (retired) and with Kaiser. It's nearly impossible to get referred, especially for hair loss, never mind menopause hormone treatment. I just saw my doctor for tests (ruled out thyroid issues) so I plan to use Musely for their hair pill. The only solution offered by my doctor was topical products.
Well, neat! I've been taking this for about 4 years now with great results for my adult acne (which started in my early 40's). I have noticed improvement in hair growth. Bonus!
MsBuggyness Hello! I am 42, female like you and my acne started along with my perimenopause in my late 30’s. I took spiro twice for one year per treatment, 50 mg a day in the morning and worked wonderfully for me. Both times i stopped the treatment, after 5-6 months the acne came back, my hair changed its texture and fell a lot. If you don’t mind my asking, how many mgs are you taking per day and for how long did your doctor advise you to be on it? Thanks in advance for your answer!
Rhalou I’m prescribed 100mg once a day. I’ve also tried stopping and the acne returned. My dr hasn’t said a limit for how long I should be on it, but she does test my potassium levels once a year with bloodwork as it can affect that and the liver.
MsBuggyness Thank you for your prompt response! Yes, i checked my potassium and liver serum levels and they all seemed to be ok. As for your hair, have you seen any changes when you stopped the medication? I suppose i have to start all over again with the spiro, as of now, i am in full menopause and taking cyclical Hrt already😔
My rheumatologist put me on methotrexate I had no idea I was going to get so much hair loss. When I finally told her THEN she told me it was due to the rx😡. I had very thick hair and now am thinning on sides. Saw Derm after years, she told me to get men’s roganine. Dr never mentioned spironolactone years later, a friend told me about it. I am also going to see if I can use Finasteride.
I imagine women losing there hair has to be highly traumatic psychologically i am all for things to fix that problem. I heard you say causes breast development in men that means run for the hills self! 🏃 Great Video Dr. Dray! 🎥
Hi, great video! I was just wondering if it's best to take Spiro with a meal, or in the morning on an empty stomach, i.e. which way is more effective? As different sources online indicate different things. :)
I have used sp. many times, everytime not more than 6 months. Last time, it made my periods irregular. I started to have them in every 35 days and between I started to have small bleedings. It also shortened my periods. It did a good job on hair loss though. I stopped shedding and my facial hair weakened. I had less oily skin. My doc. made use it with birth control pill because of the irregularity and I hated it.

OMGOSH!!! Great and informative post. Thanks so much. I’m a fairly new subscriber so haven’t watched all the previous posts yet; however, I’ve been seriously interested in getting a laser-hair-loss product. I’m definitely going back to review.
Much-needed content, particularly for me oh, thank you so much and of course any other things that this drug will help I'd love to learn about. Puzzles me how it can arrest hair loss or improve but yet on the face prevent hair loss. Can't wait for this one! :-)
Thanks Doc, another A+. I’m going to try Rogaine first. Another issue I have is wrinkles on my chest, need to try sleeping on my back, my least favorite position.
Great video- very informative.Agree with you about getting an accurate diagnosis before embarking on any treatment. Love to ur mom- hope she's doing well 🌹💜
I use Spiro. It seems to help with the side effects of using Minoxidil. My derm is upping my dose by 25 mg and sends me for blood work. I am at 75 mg now. Hard to tell if it is working because of the Minox. Will comment again when I get over 100 mg.
@@shenell1185 Yes. As of November, I am at 100mg. I see a HUGE difference. My hair is noticeably thicker and is about halfway between my shoulder and elbow. I also noticed my breast are getting larger, so I'm dieting to try slow the growth. This is the only side effect I noticed from taking the drug.
Happy Tuesday Dr. Dray 💜 I am slowly cutting back on the dose of Spiro. Unfortunately I don’t think Spiro or Rogaine do much. However, you answered an question on IG where you said Vit A may helps Minoxidil work better? Coincidentally I have had great hair growth since using the helmet and retinoid cream. I would like to find out which has been helping. It would be great if you can do a video on the effect of retinoid when using minoxidil. Thank you.
Jennifer Smith Hi Jennifer, it’s the tretinoin that I was referring to. I use it as part of my skincare. Unless I misunderstood her, it helps with the absorption of Rogaine ? I’m not entirely sure ...
Hi Dr Dray! About 3 weeks or so into spironolactone 100mg, I noticed my body was incredibly itchy and sensitive and I developed dermatographism out of nowhere. I stopped the Spironolactone, as recommended by my derm, and the itching has gone away mostly completely. My derm didn't think Spiro was the cause but I can't imagine the timing of the itchiness was all a coincidence. I have AGA and I am really bummed to think I can't get back on Spiro. What are your thoughts?
@@leticiarodriguez8522 an increase in hair loss when you first start minoxidil and spiro is very common and a crucial part of the process. Weak hairs (hairs that would have fallen out anyway within the next few months) are being pushed out of your scalp to make room for new, thicker hairs.

I have been on spironolactone 50 mg twice a day for acne for just over a year now and absolutely LOVE the results, however, my period has stopped and my dermatologist said it’s not a problem but my gynecologist wants to induce a period. Do you think it’s necessary to induce a period when the cause of amenorrhea is the use of spironolactone?
I have hormonal acne and, now that I'm in my mid-40s, thinning hair in the front and through the middle/top of my scalp. My dermatologist suggested Spironolactone and I would love to try it, but I also have low blood pressure (usually around 76/50...sometimes lower). How much does this drug tend to lower blood pressure?
@@Alimck333 It's been lower than that -- 68/36 is not uncommon for me. I measure it several times a day. Never fainted, just feel out of sorts and dizzy when it gets that low.
Thanks Dr Dray. What do you think of DHT shampoos? Also I went to a dermatologist for my hair loss, who was awful. He made me pick up all the hair in my shower drain for 10 weeks in a row. When I brought in the bags, thinking he would send those off to a lab for weighing, he barely glanced at one bag for maybe 3 seconds and that was it. Can we book an appointment with you from a different state? If not, how do you find a good dermatologist? He never brought up this medication nor DHT shampoos.
I've been taking a low dose of this medication for acne and hair loss, doc suspected a hormonal disruption. So far I can't tell if it's working, I was asked to take a higher dose by doubling my intake but my side effects got bad. I already pee a lot, so even the low dose made me pee more frequently, so doubling the dose I was in the bathroom non stop, really really bad dry mouth, constant unquenchable thirst, and unfortunately, stomach upset (#2 distress). It was a few weeks of this and I went back down to the lower dose. I'm also on cymbalta, my dose was also raised around the same time, so it could've been a combo of both meds, idk.
@@seren1010 oh, I've been off of it, it just didn't work for me at all. I had to go on BC (Yasmin) for my acne problems. It's helped clear me up, I still get breakouts but much less so, my face is no longer oily- it's a bit dry now actually 🤔 and my periods are shorter and no longer painful or very heavy anymore!
Thanks, Dt. Dray. What a great, informative video. That would be a yes to a video about spironolactone and hirsutism. It is such an aggravation to keep up with it, and it negatively affects how I feel about myself.

I was on spironolactone for some time, it worked great to stop the hair fall.. But as I was already having low pressure for all my life, this lowered further, which made me dizzy very often especially when i was getting hungry or without snack for too long.
I take 100mg of spiro twice a day and I still have hair loss. I cannot use a laser due to having an AICD. But I also take a lot of medications. I was diagnosed with chronic TE but it's been over 2 yrs now. It's odd that now I pass a hair pull test but yet it just tumbles right out of my head or combing. It's very depressing for me.
I have androgenic alopecia which for a while was maintained with initially improved and was maintained with rogaine and Yaz, but now it's suddenly gotten worse again (despite not changing my routine) and I'm not a candidate for spironolactone due to issues with hypotension. I see some women in the online forums I frequent are on finasteride (which I know is usually for men), but it's never been offered to me. I'm on BC so the potential for birth defects shouldn't be an issue. Why are derms less willing to prescribe fin for women? Studies show 2.5 - 5 mg help pre and postmenopausal women's hair loss.

Which shampoo?
@@nm-xu2ik At the moment it's Kerastase Specifique Bain Anti Pelliculaire. I know it's a mouthful. A bit of an investment but Head and Shoulders just didn't work for me. My hair just doesn't like dimethicone as it tends to leave a film on my hair and weighs it down. The Kerastase one also contains salicylic acid. It does contain sls though which you might not be so keen on. Just thought I better mention it.
Thank you Dr Dray, this is so informative.. my mother has been dealing with hair loss, I’m going to suggest! 👏🏻🧡
thanks for watching
A video on hirsutism would be amazing! It’s something that’s always affected my confidence
I used to take hormones for about a year. That's include Spironolactone as my anti androgen and estrogen. You really need to be monitored while using it. I remember experiencing hard time breathing and dehydration.
😣😣😣
I'm glad I found this video because this med was recently prescribed by a dermatologist. I asked her and the resident about the side effects, and they only mentioned potassium, low blood pressure, and more frequent going to the bathroom. I researched the med but obviously didn't do enough.
Based on your video, I may not take it. I've ordered a hair analysis (will have a consultation with another doctor) and will see what the results show.
I have PCOS and spironolactone is probably the one thing that has made a difference, but i would have to say you have to take at least 100 mg, i took 25 mg for a long time and it didnt do much.
Thank you so much for all your help. I am seeing a local dermatologist next week. I do have Hashimotos thyroid disease.
is it safe to take spironolactone and minoxidil pills together? my dermo prescribed them for my female pattern hair loss.
I would love to see a video on spironolactone for hirsutism and “peach fuzz” too. Also i would love to know if excess facial hair is still considered hirsutism If the hair is “peach fuzz” and not course. Thanks!
I’m went to dr and she said my scalp is healthy 🙃 and don’t even give me nothing and now see on line dr and I take the pill so happy hope my hair grows
In my early 20s, and the top of my crown is already visible. Will try spironolactone! Thank you for this!
Did you try it? Did it help?
Hi Dr. Dray! Can you review Vegamour? I've seen it advertised a lot and I am wondering if it's as great as they claim it is.
Thank you so much for posting daily it’s extremely informative, also please talk about facial hair❤️
What dosage are you on?
@@SamanthaRod at what dosage may I ask?
@@shenell1185 I took 50mg/day for a little over a year and have started to see myhair grow back. I had an appointment with my dermatologist last week and talked to her about how I'm seeing success with my hair and skin and she said I could move up to 100mg/day. I'm loving it so far, no real side effects aside from noticing I'm a little tired and less motivated to workout 😅.
I’m also on spiro for a little over a year and my skin has totally transformed!! It is so clear and no more cystic acne. I’ve also noticed hair grow!! Only big down side is the frequent bathroom runs. I’m taking 50mg a day doc
Said take twice a day but I could never.
I'd love to hear your take on Truth Treatments 5% retinol gel. I just finished watching a video review from someone who used to use prescription retin a .1% and switched to this product. Just curious what you think about the product/ingredients!
I would love a video for hair growth on the face, thank you so much.
YES PLEASE do spironolactone for hirsutism, I went to my dermatologist because I have it but she referred me to a gynecologist...
Spironolactone has been wonderful for me for acne! Between spiro and a simplified routine my skin looks better than ever!
I’m the exact same! No need for topicals - just super simple stuff like Cerave! Man I wish I’d figured this out 5 years ago. Couldn’t be easier!! ☺️
So you guys still continuing to use this?

Dr. Dray, my doctor prescribed me 1 mg Finasteride. Is this effective for women?
I imagine women losing there hair has to be highly traumatic psychologically i am all for things to fix that problem. I heard you say causes breast development in men that means run for the hills self! 🏃 Great Video Dr. Dray! 🎥
Happy tuesday :)
It does, because I took it and my breasts had increased in size, while I was on it. I´m a woman.

@@minniethomas6206 what side effects if you dont mind sharing?
I’ve been taking 100mg for a couple of years to treat excess hair due to PCOS and it has helped.
Can spironilactome reduce my muscle train improvement ?i am a fit girl🤗what is the minimun dose effective of spironolactone for alopecia in women?THANKS
Thank you Dr Dray 💙 Can you maybe do a video on students and university, maybe some tricks how they can keep up with their skincare and health while being this busy in college :)
Always appreciative of your alopecia-related content.
What concentration of spironolactone did you take? I took 50mg/day and felt very dizzy.
What do you think about spiro topical instead of oral? Can you discuss this method of treatment for hair loss? Thank you appreciate your channel!
Hi Dr Dray could you do a video on BondiBoost hair growth kit? I also would love to hear your opinion on fucoidan for hair growth.
Thanks Doc, another A+. I’m going to try Rogaine first. Another issue I have is wrinkles on my chest, need to try sleeping on my back, my least favorite position.

Dr. Dray, please do a video on Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia.
Did you up the dosage? Any benefit?
@@shenell1185 Yes. As of November, I am at 100mg. I see a HUGE difference. My hair is noticeably thicker and is about halfway between my shoulder and elbow. Thank you.
How did you use Vit A with Minoxid? I would like try this combination
Jennifer Smith Hi Jennifer, it’s the tretinoin that I was referring to. I use it as part of my skincare. Unless I misunderstood her, it helps with the absorption of Rogaine ? I’m not entirely sure ...
I took this and my hair line grew back but unfortunately had to discontinue using it as it dehydrated me quickly. But everyone's body is different.
How was your hair after you stopped
What about the side effects?
I haven’t gone up to 75 mg yet but my plan is to go up after a month and maybe another month or two I will go up to 100 mg(maybe)

Is Nutrafol a good solution? Thanks for your help.

@@leticiarodriguez8522 an increase in hair loss when you first start minoxidil and spiro is very common and a crucial part of the process. Weak hairs (hairs that would have fallen out anyway within the next few months) are being pushed out of your scalp to make room for new, thicker hairs.

Great Video!
I was on spironolactone for some time, it worked great to stop the hair fall.. But as I was already having low pressure for all my life, this lowered further, which made me dizzy very often especially when i was getting hungry or without snack for too long.
Dr. Day m, I have started using spirolactone 100 mg 2 months ago and I have started my hair a lot. Can that be the reason behind it?
