Man, did those GAF lawyers make you remove Coverage, Consistency and Online Reputation? Youre viewers aren't dumb and we can read. We went from pull test to granule loss. I mean WTF GAF???? Dimitry is way more honest then you guys will ever be. Let him do his schtick and you worry about improving some of the areas you are lacking in. BTW this is coming from a Home Owner who has decided to go with your GAF TIMBERLINE UHD shingles because the price was too good to pass up. I even have a GAF Master Certified company installing them. You BETTER not screw me over on my warranty should the need ever arise to make a claim. Like I said. you do you and let Dimitry do Dimitry!!

    • @BaliCurrent

@@FiveKids2go labor warranty is done by your laborer's (roofer) hence the word "labor". On the other hand, any act of God such as tornadoes, hail, hurricanes etc. voids a manufacturer warranty. This includes Gaf HDZs which Gaf claims the plywood will tear off before the shingles do.

Of all the roofs we have installed after Hurricane Laura, HDZ's are the only roofs we didn't lose when Hurricane Delta came through. I'm a firm believer in their adhesive now. The main thing isn't so much the adhesive, but where the adhesive sticks to shingle below. Its on the asphalt/ nailing line, not on granules.

I like your videos alot Dmitry. I do Approximately 8-10 thousand sq of gaf annually and never have issues with blow offs with gaf shingles. Their duragrip sealant is the most aggressive in the industry and it seals in 30° if its sunny I am in the buffalo, ny market so we are no stranger to high winds off lake erie. In the spring when everyone is having wind damaged claims its usually always a iko or tamko roof. In our market it goes #1 Gaf, #2 certainteed , #3 Atlas, #4 o.c. we do not have malarkey. But iko , bp, and tamko are junk and wouldn't recommend them on a dog house. We have been in business 19 years and have one of the best reputations in my market due to commitment to excellence . I have a friend that is a GAF certified dealer in Oregon and he says their packages aren't floppy like the bundles that come out of the MN plant.
He came out to our place in Iowa to help re-shingle our place and we used the HDZ. I was amazed how quickly they would seal down. Yet in high heat, if you would walk on the top row of shingles a lot, they would start to slip down the roof and stretch the hole the nails made. We would spray down the roof with water to keep it cool while installing in high heat. 90 degrees and up. I think the average temp we installed at was 93.

I had GAF Timberline HDZ installed on my home on 13-Oct-21 in the Barkwood color with a brown drip edge. With a very light yellow house it looks really good. I believe the crew that did the house did a really good job - they took their time around roof penetrations to ensure they were sealed up nicely, they installed a ridge vent which I did not have before, they used a synthetic roof paper (not sure what it’s called but he showed me the strength difference), they put 5 layers of coverage in the valleys, they put some flat roofing material in a dead valley, and they replaced some plywood and soffit wood that apparently got wet and was rotting. Previous roof was 19 years old - hoping this new one lasts as long. It was a crew of 9 and it took them all day. I shoulda bought them lunch! But anyway, try to find out about the crew they have doing your house - I think it makes a big difference. Mine was Greentek in Tampa, FL.

I hear there is and that the HD packages often specifically say HD on them. The extent to which that's true? Who knows... BUT, there is a test on YT where they looked at water heater components between HD and the supply store and there was a marked difference in the components... Far more plastic used for HD. So for some products this is absolutely true, no question.

Out here in Cali the HDZ come in white packaging. I am not a huge fan of the increase nail line. It promotes the rainbow nail pattern since the guys get to go faster on the install. Only the very bottom portion of the nail line allows the nail to penetrate both layers of the shingle. If not the nail only grabs 1 layer of the shingle. I have had them start to slide out on 5/12 pitch after lunch from very minimal foot traffic. I do agree with the granule loss they have done a fabulous job reducing loss.

You have 10 competitors, there should be 10 stars in each category, graded on a curve such that for each category there is one 10 star and one 1 star and everything in between. In effect, your grading scale needs to reflect the possible in terms of what the market makes available, but also maintain a greater level of granulation (pun intended).

We are a Certified Roofing Insights company and would like to give our opinion. GAF is the main shingle used here in NC. I do believe it would have been best to purchase the shingles from a roofing supplier. The shingles will be fresh from the manufacture. All bundles we receive from ABC are nice and tight like the commercial shows. Our company and installers rate GAF at #1 for us on an overall.

    • @RoofingInsights3.0
      @RoofingInsights3.0  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You also have different plant it’s coming from. I think GAF has different issues here in MN vs the rest of the country. Plant is 70 years old, we have been talking about issues for years but they always seemed to be ignored. Packaging were too tight 5 years ago making corners lift (it was shrinking them too much) and today they have garbage bags look type packaging (complete opposite). Either way, it’s not our problem, we are just a reporter and show it how it is.
We would love GAF to explain packaging inconsistency and to work with us, they refuse interviews, refuse explanations so we just show what we see and how we see it.
Either way HDZ is on recommendation list and we will back up any warranty and product issues for our contractors

Price is hard: supplier sets the price. We mentioned price 3 years ago when we did it first, problem is it’s up to supplier how much it sell it for. For example: GAF can sell it for a dollar cheaper to ABC than OC, but ABC might sell it for a dollar more...

I see this shingle installed wrong all the time, see this shingle delaminating all the time and a 60 mph gust will rip this off. I rip this shingle off from poor install and manufacturing issues more than often. I think this shingle is used by roofing companies for on going business because there is always something to repair with them.

  • @Maynardd

Pull tests are BS. First off, it all has to do with nailing. If you’re not hand nailing and the pressure is too high on your gun then you’re clearly blowing through. I don’t care if it’s a 16th of an inch. If the head of that nail breaks the shingle, it’s improper installation.. That alone makes a pull test useless.
The seal of the shingle is far more important than a pull test. If that shingle isn’t sealed it’s not going to stay on the roof very long. I’ve torn off 30 year old shingle roofs in shock because they were nailed on with the nails 2 inches above the nail line by people that clearly didn’t know what they were doing, But the shingles never blew off, or fell off and they had no issues because they were a lower pitched roof, and as we all know the seals back in the day were far better than they are now.

Weight has nothing to do with the quality of shingles. Online reviews should not be considered because for example if I have 1 five star review I show five stars but if I have 500 reviews and I show up 4.4 then it would not be fair to compare with the company with 1 five star review. Your evaluation is flawed and should not be published.
