  • SRV rocks and plays guitar like no other. Live from the Capitol Theatre in NJ in 1985. Some time ago we did a Guitar God mini series and did not pay enough attention to Stevie Ray Vaughn and so now looking to catch up!

SRV switches guitars and he doesn't miss a beat. He pulls a tooth out while playing the guitar with his teeth, and he doesn't miss a beat. I swear, he could have sliced off a finger and he wouldn't have missed a beat. I had the pleasure of seeing Stevie Ray Vaughn live several times, including a night he opened up for The Who. To me, he is the GOAT! BTW, you probably know this but SRV played guitar on David Bowie's Let's Dance album. Unfortunately SRV did not go on the Serious Moonlight tour.

This song, which I have seen many times before, solidified in my mind that SRV is the greatest blues guitarist to have ever lived. If there had been no video of this song, you never would know how much trouble he played through: switched guitars, dropped pick, adjusted amps, knocked a tooth out. He died in his 30's and the world missed out on at least 20 years of peak SRV

When you find out that Stevie couldn't read sheet music, then hear him ooze soul as he plays from his heart... and soul, you'll really be amazed. You MUST watch Texas Flood, live from the El Mocambo. Unbelievable. Also watch Stevie do Hendrix's, Voodoo Chile', for which he visited Jimmy's father to ask permission to play it to honor his son's greatness. It is All-World great... I could go on, but ALSO watch his live "sound check" video (in his leopard coat and boots... style!) FYI, I've been a life-long blues fan, mostly SRV, a David Gilmour fan, and of course, a Gary Moore fan, for many years (I'm 77). Incredible talents all. And I cried like a baby when Stevie so tragically died in the helicopter crash no more than 30 miles from where I lived back then. We have all been so blessed by these men. RIP Stevie. You live on through your music.

I love your comment about how lucky we are that someone captured this moment on film. I am one of those people who was lucky enough to see SRV live--at a dance hall in Central Texas--early on in his career. I had a table right by the stage. What you don't get a sense of in these videos is how LOUD he liked to play--really amped up. All these decades later, I can still feel that music in my bones. It is one of those nights I'll remember on my deathbed. Thanks for playing. Seriously, you can ask me (and others) for future songs to play--I know all the best versions.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's band was Double Trouble. Chris Layton on drums joined Stevie in 1978. Bass player Tommy Shannon in 1981 was Stevie's best friend. Reese Wynans keyboard player joined in 1985. Tommy and Stevie had hard core addiction problems and in the fall of 1986 they went into rehab. Stevie in Atlanta and Tommy in Austin TX. Stevie used to thank God that he was alive and well enough to be with the audience during his later talks during this songs message. Stevie helped many people to sobriety in a quiet way and was even a greater man than his unbelievable playing. He is my favorite performer but reading about him just touched me in how humble and generous he was.

About the Bowie tour. Stevie Ray Vaughan was supposed to tour with David Bowie on his serious moonlight tour. When they first met Bowie asked him to play guitar on the album which Stevie Ray Vaughan did. When Bowie initially talked to him about it, he implied that Stevie’s band double trouble, and Stevie would open for many of David’s shows. This was a time in Stevie‘s career when he had just recorded his first album, Texas Flood, and it was getting ready to be released he wanted to do the tour, but after he played the solos on the album, all of a sudden his band double trouble, were not going to be opening any of the dates. Also, they told Stevie that he was not allowed to speak about his own band and his own album in any interviews. This was a line that you didn’t cross with Stevie Ray Vaughan. David Bowies camp always maintained that they fired Stevie but according to a journalist who interviewed him in relation to the upcoming tour, at the end of the interview, Stevie told him, “hey I gotta run I gotta go quit this tour. For Stevie it wasn’t about the money. It was about the fact that they backed out of letting him and his band open many of the shows, and also trying to control him by telling him what he could, and could not say. Honestly, that just wasn’t going to fly with him.

When I was 17 a friend of mine who played in a band turned me onto him. We lived right at the Canadian border and used to go to Canada all the time to see shows. Well we went to the El mocambo in TO and i was hooked. Many years and many shows later. We are at a Tiny outside concert venue a bit out of Buffalo at Darien Lake. Had front row dead center stage and another great Texas blues guitarist Johnny Winter opened up. what a pair to see together, one of my favorite shows of all time and i have seen them all. Sadly two weeks later he was killed and the World lost another great one. RIP SRV

I haven't read all the comments so this might have already been said but Rene Martinez was Stevie's guitar tech thru much of his career and was always ready when Stevie needed a new guitar due to string breaking or wanting another guitar. Him helping Stevie change guitars so smoothly is due to both of these talented men. There's a video on Austin City Limits playing Look At Little Sister where Stevie breaks a string and they change guitars without missing a beat there also.

Love this 😌 So talented I still cant believe how he was cruelly killed ☹ We are very lucky there was so much video of him, even audio when he was just 14 playing on a band that originally thought he'd b crap!! He made THEM sound good & had the room slack jawed with his pure talent even at that age....He wrote this for a friend who had died & he wanted the white guitar coz he called it Charlie after his friend (near the end he says "thankyou Charlie")....its really annoying when people say oh he just copied Hendrix, no real original talent etc!!!! Yeah ok 🙄 Love Hendrix but SRV just gets to me in a way i cant explain...both greats...no need compare - both had so much more to give....Even Stevies SOUNDCHECK is a great watch!!
Stevie has "Thanks for all the love u passed our way"...a line from this song...on his grave, so its quite poignant listening to him singing it after he died so horrifically...Plz do ANY SRV Live 🙏🙏

When you go to see any band with a standout guitarist, this is the performance you'll hope you get but seldom do. Absolutely amazing. His brother Jimmie Vaughan, famously opened for Jimi Hendrix, and then later was in a little band called the Fabulous Thunderbirds (named for the cars not the marionettes!). They had a ZZ Top style blues rock sound. Tuff Enuff probably their biggest hit, here's a clip that has SRV guesting with his brother. th-cam.com/video/0j7rk0RJ8j4/w-d-xo.html (not a super performance, but you know you want to have a watch!)
As for George Thorogood, obviously not in the same league but great guitar blues boogie, roadied for him in the early 90s! Yes please!

Trick!!! Uh, he just played the guitar behind his back better than 95% of the people who play guitar can forward! Who else does that? All the things he does while playing playing to change tone, volume, sustain while never missing a beat, AND playing behind his back, sideways etc. Clapton explained Stevie well when he said that all Guitar players have to often think about where they may be going next. Stevie doesn't, it just flows from somewhere. He was the best I ever saw, not even close. It looks like Belgium is going to cost me money again.
