At my dad’s funeral, his best friend talked about how on my dad’s wedding night he was so drunk and sang karaoke to this song and if you watch the wedding video in fast motion, it’s just my dad rocking back and forth. I think about that every time I hear this song. Miss you dad. I’m seeing Elton John live in 6 days and I wish you were here to go with me.
Jodie Comer just said on a Q&A that this was the song Villanelle was listening to on the train scene back from home. They were blasting it at the set while filming. This will forever make me think of it... She's one of the greatest actors of her generation 🙌
I never realized when I was a kid how melancholy these lyrics are: "But the years went by and rock just died/Susie went and left us for some foreign guy/Long nights cryin' by the record machine/Dreamin' of the Chevy and my old blue jeans". Wow, that's rough, Elton. I feel ya bro. 😢
"But they'll never kill the thrills we've got Burning up to the Crocodile Rock" I enjoy the lines that succeed it, because you learn to let go, and enjoy the memories for what they are; at least, that's my take :)
Every time I hear this, I am back in a passenger seat next to my mother driving on a wonderful long-gone summer. It's amazing that the ones who have left us can still live in the vibrations of yesterday. Love your family folks. I'm sorry to say that we only get them once.
In 1973 when I was in first grade, my mom, who was a single mom at that time, had a friend who ran a little dive bar in the small town where we lived. On Saturday afternoons while it was closed, my mom would take me with her up there while she helped do the weekly deep clean, windows and such. The stuff you don't get daily. But anyway, she would put me up at the bar with a huge sour dill pickle from the big jar next to cash machine and 25 cents to play two songs on the juke box. It was always Donnie Osmond's Puppy Love and this. Good memory.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Elton John and David Cassidy do this song together in concert back in the early 70's? I may have been just a little girl back in the 70's, but I always thought David Cassidy was adorable!

I got to meet Elton John at Billboard Magazine's Performing Artist of the Year Awards in 1974. I was introduced to him by my uncle Peter Heine director of advertising for Billboard Magazine. Elton John was very friendly. I told him how exciting it was to be there. We shook hands. And Elton said "I'm really excited too Eric." We both laughed. I didn't realize how special he was, or for that matter how big he would become. Rock on Elton!
