Alesis SR 16 drum machine. Programming a simple beat.

  • I've been using the SR 16 for about 20 years now. I'm so used to it, I don't feel like upgrading. Maybe if this one breaks I'll get a software drum machine.
    This is the first in a series. I plan on making more videos with more how-to's in the future. If you want to see a specific feature, leave a comment. If I know how to do it, I'll make a video!

    in my opinion, this is the best drum machine for the money. I bought mine in 1999. It got stolen in 2006, and I recently bought another one from Guitar Center, because I havent found anything comparable or as good as this one. Very authentic sounds and user friendly. Even if you dont know all the "ins and outs" of this module, you can still make solid beats that will have most people swear your playing real drums.

      It’s the only one I’ve ever used so I don’t really know how others compare.
      It’s interesting you consider it user friendly. A lot of people want to press one button and have the whole song programmed and this one doesn’t do that at all. It takes patience to program it.

      @@RiffMusic1970 I ran into a problem recording today., my ride and Tom 3 are not what the button says. The ride one sounds like a bongo, and the tom3 sounds like a modified snare. I don’t know how to troubleshoot it. We like the tones of the other ones, the kick beat is very nice. I have the tones figured out.so if you can help me with correct name on the buttons you’d have some happy pickers. Again thank you. Bill

    I had one of these units at least twenty five years ago.I could never figure out how to program the thing and sold it a few months later. That was my first and only experience with a hardware drum machine. Last year I decided to try again and picked up a Roland TR-8S. No looking back for me.

    Hi, great video! I love my SR-16, but there's one thing about it that drives me nuts - if you're using one of the 49 beats that come preloaded from the factory and change the drumkit while it's playing, everything goes great until you press the fill button, then after the fill it reverts back to the original drumkit the pattern was programmed on at the factory. Super frustrating. I doubt it but was wondering if there's any way to stop that from happening. Thanks!

    • @RiffMusic1970
      @RiffMusic1970  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey! You can’t edit presets.
      The way around this is saving a preset to a user pattern which is easy to do.
      Select the Preset you want to copy
      Press and hold Copy
      Type in the user pattern # you want to copy to (it defaults to the same user # as preset #)
      Press Play
      This should do it BUT…if there’s a pattern already in the user spot, it will add the preset pattern after the user pattern so the user pattern will play, then preset pattern will play.
      To fix this,
      Press Record Setup
      Page down to page 7
      Change the beat number back to what it was before the copy.
      I just tried it and even if you delete the user pattern first, it’ll still put the preset after the user pattern. It’ll just be silence so you still have to change the user pattern length on page 7 of Record Setup.

      @@RiffMusic1970 Thanks a million!! Too cool! One more question if you don't mind and have the spare time, after I copy the preset into a user space, do you know if the fills will also copy over so the fill buttons can be used? Thanks again

    Thanks for your help.
    I have a Blackstar HT Stage 100 tube amp head. I built a custom 2x12 speaker cabinet with a single 8” for lower volume at home, all 3 speakers are 16 ohm with their own individual inputs. Any ideas if I can run the Alexis through it? I have only 1 amp head input and 1 effects loop but of course those signals have gain, reverb etc.
    I could mount a dedicated solid state amp on or in my cabinet?
    Steep learning curve for me on the drum machine, you’ve been a great help so far 👍

    • @RiffMusic1970
      @RiffMusic1970  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could work but it’s not ideal.
      Guitar speakers are designed for mid frequencies. The drum machine puts out much higher and much lower frequencies. The higher ones will be missing and the lower ones can damage the speakers. Watch the volume if you do this.
      Full range speakers would work better. Computer monitors or PA speakers etc.

    If you make a mistake, is there a simple means to undo the mistake without erasing the other notes/beats already put in to your programmed beat?

    • @RiffMusic1970
      @RiffMusic1970  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There’s a couple ways to do it. If there’s a lot of space between beats, you can play the pattern and hold erase and the pad you want to erase.
      If there’s another of the same pad close to the one you want to erase, doing the first version could erase hits you want to keep. If this is the case, go to step mode as in the video and step through the beats until you get to the one you want to erase and press erase and play.
      You can try one of the quantize options. If the one you want to erase is between the quantize beats you can turn quantize off and go through every beat. This takes the longest.

    • @RiffMusic1970
      @RiffMusic1970  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes! It won’t sound great because guitar speakers are focused on mids where the drum machine is full range but you’ll be able to hear it.
      Watch out for kick drum volume. The low end could damage a guitar speaker.
      Edit: I was thinking you meant guitar amp, if you mean a speaker cabinet, I don’t know if it’ll work. I think you need an amp.

    • @RiffMusic1970

      I go from the left and right out into a mixing board. Then out of the mixing board into my interface and into my computer where I record into my DAW. I can hear the drum machine through my computer speakers.
      I've never heard of Kanto speakers but from what I see they only have RCA inputs. Is this what you have? If it is, are you using a 1/4" to RCA cable to the speaker inputs? Then it looks like you need a speaker cable with no ends (just exposed wire) to go to the input of the right speaker.
      Hope this helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions.
