      Thanks, Chris. We are on contract right now in the Caribbean at The Red Piano on the island of St. Maarten. I use this drum machine every show. Though we could do our duo show without it, the alesis sr18 really helps us keep the energy going and rounds out a bigger sound than just 2 vocals, a piano and guitar. My SR18 has been sitting on my desk for 2 years idle. I love your trial and error, free form demo video. It hits home for me and I followed along. What can appear complicated can be rather simple (and fun) when you have a working performer run through the practical tasks. Changing the tempo on the fly, knowing your Beats Per Minutes of the song and feeling it out in live situation. All the best with your career and future shows.

    Thank you very much. This demo is real world. I learn and play for fun and as a hobby. Piano and sr18, guitar and sr18. No laptop, no DAW, no groovebox. Sometimes less is more. Thank you for keeping it simple.

    Susan, this was a godsend! My husband bought this machine more than a year ago and has never sat down to figure it out. We just sat down now with the manual and were flummoxed so I went online and found you. Eureka! They need to pay you to do an instructional cd for them. Thanks for your generosity in sharing and sorry we already made the purchase.

    Thank you so much Susan, I am so thrilled to happen to come across your demo here of this drum machine, this was actually my main reason, looking for a drum machine to bring into my shows, even though I use the ketron Audya 5 keyboard, there are nights I get asked for a song and either I don't have the backing track for it or on the fly select the correct beat on the Audya I could simply pick up my guitar and dial in quickly on the SR18 machine, I did once own the SR16 many moons ago, but I gave a lone of it to someone and for the life of me cannot remember who, because at the time I did have a live drummer in my 4 piece band,
    I'm so happy right now to finally meet you, and also appreciate the fact that you want to help explaining in great detail what beat to use for certain songs tempo etc,
    shows the sign of a true and honest musician, I did start out years ago with just my guitar and SR16, but now moving on in years and to be honest I use very little backing tracks I just love to play live, it's actually more challenging and enjoyment, besides glorified karaoke which a lot of bands are doing nowadays, I think I will invest in an SR18 now and thanks to you I think it will be of great advantage, but can you tell me if this machine actually have an old time waltz beat in it, good old fashioned Irish country waltz or is this something I would have to programme in myself, also the intros and endings what are these like on this machine, again I have to say a huge thank you for doing this clip, I have subscribed now and will check out your other videos, it's great to be back on track again, hope everything is going exceptionally well for you both..

    Susan and Cliff - thank you so much. I have been wanting to incorporate a drum machine into my playing from time to time, but was having trouble getting started. I have an SR-16 that I got some time ago, and then moved without ever having learned how to put Alesis to work. I think it is similar enough that I will be able to take what I learned from your video and get up and running. Practical, real-world tips--the best kind.

    I just wanted to thank you for posting this video I have the SR18 I bought a while back and seeing you use it and explain a few things helps alot. There are so many functions on this machine and seeing you show how to use it without getting too complicated is great. I thought it was much more complicated than it appears to be. My use for the machine is primarily to create rough cuts of original stuff on my 4 & 8 Track and your video is an awesome insight on how I might be able to do that. Thank You for taking the time to post this video.

    I have two SR18s. One for the studio, one to play out. The samples are so realistic. I have a one man band act. Like you, I just use the patterns on100% of songs that require drums. I use a start/stop momentary foot switch. One needs to check the polarity of the switch so when stepping on the switch there is no delay. I have velcroed my SR18 to my keyboard. I purchased a universal power adapter from guitar center to avoid the expense and inconvenience of batteries. I have taken a few of the preset patterns and tweaked them a bit. My next project is to learn how to hook patterns together for more complex songs. I have a few songs that change tempo and or rhythm patterns...

    • @cliffandsusan
      @cliffandsusan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cliff and I have a song we are releasing that has very complicated changing drum patterns, and for other songs that switch the type of patterns mid song, it's a challenge. Like Copperhead Road. I find myself quickly trying to toggle and get there. It's not ideal.

    Good evening! I was looking for MIDI information on the SR18 and ran across your video and I really enjoyed your style of sharing. Thank you for that.
    I’ve had an SR18 for about 3-4 years and haven’t touched it - but - I’m gonna give it a go I think. Lol. The main reason I haven’t touched it is because I’m still stuck on my Alexis SR16 from the 1990’s (I think I bought the first one, lol.). The thing is, I have about 35 patterns that I created and as you know each pattern has 4 parts and unfortunately they will not directly transfer. Even using MIDI. So, to use it, using my SR 16 as s guide, I would have to re-write all of my patterns in SR18 language so to speak. On the plus side there are a few strong reasons for pushing thru the upgrade. #1 being that it has the old LCD screen with no backlight. I have to keep a mini lamp handy at all times or forget using it. #2, I love the drum sounds, as they very much have that old school sound that I grew up with. But maybe there’s a few better that I can use. And like I said I have a lot of hours invested. Creating my own patterns.
    Back In the 90’s I tried a Dr Rhythm but they really tried to create a “band in the box” and all I wanted are drums. I do not like being tied down to a fully recorded or sequenced song. I must have flexibility. Having said that, I went back to my SR16.
    But in the 2010’ s I search and found the SR18 and it looked like a viable upgrade. But after unboxing, All I saw was a feeble attempt to copy Dr Rhythm which I already turned my nose at. So I put it back in the box and held it for a Rainy day. And we’ll that’s today!! Lol.
    I learned a few tips from you that just may help me through it without losing my mind. Lol. But as I watched the video, I saw an opportunity to offer you a tip as well, if you don’t mind, that is,
    Although, your SR18 is right there within inches of your RH, you still have to remove your hand from the keyboard to activate the full patterns, Start:Stop, tempo changes etc
    Many moons ago I tried and fell in love with a Boss FS-6 dual foot switch. You can assign it as a latch or momentary (what I use). It requires 2 cables but I use a cable with a stereo plug on one end and split into two mono cables on the other - perfect for the two foot switch jacks on the Alexis.
    The pedal has several functions and I’m already too windy here so I’ll cut to the chase:
    Before the drum had started, the right pedal button will act a the tsp tempo button on the machine. So as you talk to the audience your foot is setting tempo unnoticed.
    The left pedal button is your standard start/stop.
    Once the drum began, the right button now automatically becomes the fill button that’s transitions you between the A pattern (which I have programmed basic beats for verses) but the you tap the button to move you to the B pattern which I basically cooy the A pattern but add more cymbals & Stuff for my choruses. Then tap again and transition back to the softer A pattern for the next verse.
    Now!, I admit I do not know a thing about playing piano or if you have even free foot or not. But if you do, this is the way to go and you won’t regret it.
    You are welcome to troll my TH-cam channel. Every song in there was performed using the Alesia SR16, my guitar, harmony box, and many with my looper. (All loops recorded live) No backing tracks. But that drum.. lol.
    Hopefully I’ll get my stuff moved over to the SR18 and it will sound even better.
    TAke care and thank you for the very nice and talented video demonstration.

    Hey, a review/tutorial by an actual working musician that relates to workflow rather than just being a list of stuff that the box can do! More informative than any review of any piece of gear I've ever seen, anywhere . Even though I'll be using this in a different way (I mainly want it for bass loops - long story - so ironically I'll actually be muting the drums and percussion a lot of the time, which is nearly the opposite of what you do), I now know that it'll do what I want. I'd buy one via your Amazon setup if I could, but alas I'm half a world away, so that wouldn't be workable (it'd be so much better if the Affiliate scheme worked across all Amazon's sites, but it doesn't seem to). And I'd really like to be at one of your piano bar gigs *right now*! Hope you're coping with the plague and wishing you all that's good.

    Easily one of the best and entertaining demos I have seen online, plus I think I have the same Resonator guitar seen there.? Just went back to using the
    SR-18 in the last day after somehow "forgetting" I had it, and Susan's astute tips will help me out.
    Btw the wide scope of musical styles briefly sketched reminds me in the most positive way of a tremendous "house band" in Tempe Arizona years ago, Nancy Jackson at Chuy's
    on Mill Avenue near Arizona State U. campus. It's a real gift to be open to many musical genres and styles, otherwise you and any audience you have miss out. Cool dog too!!

    Thanks for the video. You are very talented. I just wanted to comment on you not wanting to use a foot switch for Start Stop and Fill. I have them on my SR-18. I can't imagine reaching over and pushing a button. You have so much going on with your hands anyway. My pedals make it so easy. Just so your viewers do not write off using pedals without trying them.
    I enjoyed your video. Thanks!

      This machine can do 3/4 and shuffle all you like. You might just have to program them yourself. But I will say that it is deffo worth programing some beats of your own. If you have midi paterns with beats you like, you can set it up to record directly into a new user pattern, so would not need to program at all. Just need to set the right tempo and settings, but not difficult.

    • @TheBuddyKeys
      @TheBuddyKeys 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used it today at my gig in Hell Michigan. I have programmed it a lot. I meant there are so many other newer drum machines that can’t do 3-4 or shuffles. I place my SR18 sideways so I can use the volume knob. I bought a Yamaha PSR SX900 for 2,500. But the piano sound is not professional sounding to me. The drum machine on it is the best. But I like the simplicity of just playing piano (Casio S1100) and the SR18. Wish there was a big volume knob on the front and a tempo knob you could turn without having to hold down the tap tempo.

      I have 3 dogs now since this video. I say I have a dog problem and Cliff has a guitar problem. Although, 3 dogs doesn't compare to how many guitars he's bought. lol

    It was definitely the foot pedals you were using. I live using the foot pedals. It allows me to turn the machine into a real instrument

    Great song list. What would I use for songs like Sleep Walk, Tennessee Waltz, Stormy Monday?

    • @cliffandsusan
      @cliffandsusan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a waltz tempo in there. I don't use it much, but you could try that.

    Great...for people who have a LEFT hand on a keyboard...but what about programming the bass lines/changes to the particular song you wanna do? I'm looking for a unit that's easier than the Boss DR. 880 to program the chord progression , but I"ve run out of memory on the 880 for song patterns.

      I used a Roland once, and I think it was more advanced. I'm pretty basic. I should try and maybe get a little more fancy. Any luck on finding one that suits what you are needing?

    You can change the drumkits too. So you can do "Stand by me" with the beatbox kit, industrial kit, etc. And you can play the Bass via midi with a keyboard instead of the pads.

    Can you create a setlist of grooves to go from one song to the next with the touch of a single button?
    Thinking about getting one for church, but can't stop and scroll through settings between songs.
    Thank you........ Really good video.

    Hi. I have learned more from your video and song list about the SR18 in the 20-minute video than a couple years of reading the manual. Such a helpful video. Can you show me how to get 3/4, 6/8, and 12/8 feels for songs like Sleepwalk, Tennessee Waltz, and Stormy Monday?

    Thanks for your effort. Best of luck on future tutorials. In the future try to make more use of time. Maybe by editing out alot of... Well just get the point. And enough about Cliff! Thank you for the samples of your playing, and your pretty good, paired with a drum machine that still sounds like my first (And Last) drum machine. It was a Roland 505 purchased in 1987. There is a demand for the sound you are delivering to people who probably don't appreciate your true talent and probably don't want hear your originals. I have know idea if you do write your own music and lyrics. I know cliff does. But you have to make a living. Some of the best guitar players I have ever jammed with are still teaching lessons. I may sound critical but it's meant in a constructive and friendly way. To sum up. Making live music is a beautiful thing. And if you guy's do write your own, PLAY IT!
    Bye Cliff🙂😉

      True! I made a lot of music back in the day with an Ensoniq keyboard and an Alesis drum machine. Got lots of hate from the drummers and bassists (and a few guitarists) I knew.
