The DIY Rocketeer Building SpaceX Replicas of Self-Landing Rockets

  • Joe Barnard left his background in videography and music production to launch his life of amateur rocketry, and he shares his DIY adventures in building rockets on his TH-cam channel BPS.space.
    After he saw the launch and successful landing of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, he knew that he wanted to do that too-so he took it upon himself to learn all he could about rocket science to get a job at SpaceX. Since then, many companies have come knocking at his door, but he’s decided to keep on forging ahead with his DIY endeavors to build, launch, and land fully functional scale rockets at a fraction of the cost and time of experimenting with real rockets.
    Motherboard travels to Tennessee to meet with the rocketeer leading that charge for budding DIY rocket scientists around the world.
    Check out Joe’s TH-cam channel: / @bpsspace

    Just from a control engineering perspective you can not really make this work with a model rocket using solid propellant. There is no way to alter thrust once it goes off. You can get the perfect altitude setting for a motor only to have it be slightly different for the next motor. A gust of updraft can put you off target. This is why control engineering exists in the first place; to iron out the small differences and still reach a set goal.
    My suggestion; use a hybrid engine that uses a solid propellant and a gas so that you can control the thrust by controlling the gas flow.

    HOT TIPS: The scale of your rocket makes landing on grass similar to a Space-X rocket landing in the woods on rolling hills. To compensate for this while keeping the same landing gear looks, you could do a few things. You already have the sensors and PID controller, so put that USB battery inside the rocket body and use it to shift the center of gravity with cheap microservos. You could get a similar or better result with a linkage from your motor gimbal to the landing struts that connect when the springs deploy them. Alternatively, you could give the landing gear their own servos (should only need two with a clever mechanism) and this would eliminate the burning band release and associated failure modes. Servos are more reliable in terms of timing. Also, look into "thrust reversal" as used on jet engines. With careful heat shielding, a thrust reverser can nullify the thrust from your solid rocket engine, giving the effect of shutting it off without switching to a liquid or hybrid rocket setup. Most importantly, if you want someone to hire you, don't attempt to look like them. This gains you zero brownie points (unless they need a fall guy or stunt double) and maxes out the creepy points. If a dude wants a replica of himself, nature has a mechanism for that. It's not a bad trait for picking up chicks or acting jobs though, since you technically look like a famous billionaire. Good luck on your project!

    • @buckstarchaser2376
      @buckstarchaser2376 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Stealth360stealth I completely agree that he naturally has a significant resemblance to the very person he's informally asking for a job from, and I suspect that the video producer did too. I also understand that a person's appearance can change significantly, based on their styling choices and outward expression. At 0:30 in this video, it's evident that he has only a vague resemblance to Elon Musk. Notably, his rocket is displayed with his business logo "BPS" and is adorned with the US flag, indicating that he identifies as an American with his own business idea. Over the course of the video, his style changes. With all the memorabilia that he wears and surrounds himself with being associated with one other business person and company that he expresses desire to work for, the similarity becomes overtly unnatural. I have nothing against him personally, and I pointed out that giving up his individuality to adopt that of another results in neither. Keep in mind that you liked the previous observations when they applied to a human creation, but not when I used that same process to critique the aspects of a human-created persona. I strongly suspect that the rapid change in appearance and gradual change in facial expressions, etc. were likely a product of feedback from the video segment's producer and the clips displayed were chosen by the editors. I suspect that he was styled and coached to exaggerate these similarities on advice from the show's producer, and since he has a photography business, likely followed the advice from what he would consider a successful version of himself without regard for the difference in objectives. The problem with that, and the underlying message of my comment's final tip, is that a person who is willing to adopt someone else's persona to replace their own, as well as to start one's own rocket business and state a desire to be hired by a competitor, is mechanically unlikely to succeed in those goals just as the other things I gave advice on. The statement I gave was intended to be self explanatory to prevent the need for a block of text as large as this one.

    • @buckstarchaser2376
      @buckstarchaser2376 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@funnelfpv9435 That would add more complexity and weight, but would also likely work until motor cutout. From his demonstration of mastery in keeping the rocket upright in flight with the current thrust vectoring, I'd say it's within his ability to implement it. Imagining a group of Estes A10 motors firing up just at the end, that would be exciting to watch. Unfortunately, solid motors are notoriously hard to light off simultaneously. I recall the Mythbusters were able to pull it off though.

    The solid fuel rocket burn rate is slightly inconsistent so that could be the reason why you might not be able to make a perfect soft touch landing. But what you've achieved so far is still pretty much remarkable buddy. I hope SpaceX takes you in.

      I was wondering about that. I suspect he'll also have problems generalizing this to the full flight because he'll need an engine he can restart.

    Propulsively landing a rocket with a solid rocket motor is unbelievably hard because a solid motor can’t be throttled up or down. It just ignites and burns, no way to make on the fly throttle adjustments. I’ve got so much respect for this guy for going for it. If he can time the ignition of the motor correctly, I think he may be able to do it. Not to mention he’s self taught, and his rockets have gotten very complex with thrust vectoring, flight control, etc.
    IMO he’s going places, and “places” could very well end up being SpaceX or Rocket Lab.

    Thrust vectoring is *dramatically* harder on a smaller scale than w/ full size rockets. That he’s getting so close is really impressive. It’s easy to balance a broomstick on your finger….but try it with a popsicle stick! That’s what he’s doing.
