The little-know Chinese pop singer, who still fails to break through, has suffered a descent into hell in recent years. Between an unsuccessful film career and a stay in prison, Jaycee has been unable to live up to the high standards set by his famous father.

There's a bit of irony in this whole thing. Jackie's work ethics is why he has become so successful, but it's also a factor as to why Jaycee grew up the way he did. He was too busy doing his own thing and didn't give the proper time and guidance to his own son.

@kevinmorrice I said it was a factor, never said it was the sole reason why Jaycee became a "failure". Also being spoiled wouldn't be such an issue if Jackie was around to teach him about the value of money and hard work.

i do too. my dad is a successful person (real estate, data analytics, govt contracts relating to toll management) but not famous. he did let me have a normal childhood but when i was little he would get me whatever i wanted. i was a spoiled asshole. i still hate myself for being as such but as my sister was born the sudden lack of attention, that spoiled thing in me just vanished. we also had to move to less posher area because my dad's new office but was in the same city. the place was definitely safe but it wasnt fancy. my parents would let me get into trouble and fend for myself. i felt horrible. i was in 7th. 7TH!!. when i just gave up. gave up. totally, my grades dropped and again had to face the consequences for that but i did not go back to what i was. now when i got into highschool, my father did start spending alot more time with me especially during covid. now i am a better person. ambitious. i do want to do stuff and take risks in life. i want to kind of be like him. but man, thank god i went through shit. even though money was never a problem, fending of for myself did teach me a lot. more so on how to react to such situation, i now do well in a high stress environment and do not break. though i am still lonely, i know what to do in my life, lots to fix too, i am overweight, and some more i will be obese type 1. i stopped gaining weight. i mean i will shutup now lol, never drained my thoughts so hard in my life. i feel better ig. thank you and sorry for putting this out there.
also i apologize for my grammar, my thoughts were just racing through. oh man. and do not feel sorry for me, there is a good chance i probably still suffered less than what most of you do on a daily basis.

I dont think Jackie realizes that alot of this falls on him for not being a parent. Speaking from experience, not having your parents be present in your life, in emotional or physical capacity, really does a number on kids/teens. As a "young" adult I've come to understand why my parents weren't the best, but it doesn't lessen the impact of not having available parents in a period of massive brain developers. It seems, I went the route of becoming an adult while being a child, while Jaycee went the route of angst and brooding. Which neither are good, but one is easier to recover a broken/breaking relationship from than the other. I'm glad to see they are atleast trying to make things better between each other.

I see a lot of people in the comments calling Jaycee spoiled, etc. but it does seem as though he tried to branch out into a career he felt passionate about (making music) so I think it is kind of unfair to call him lazy and say he hasn't tried to make something of himself (the comments from Jackie about Jaycee being lazy for going to bed at 9pm made me cringe a little because I'm not always able to stay up late myself as a working adult). Just because his music didn't become popular doesn't mean he didn't work hard on it, and as an artist myself I know how crushing it is to see your work flounder/fail on its own without biting commentary in the background from the parent who was never there. I am kind of curious about going and watching some of the films Jaycee was in myself to see how he did with the acting, that also doesn't seem to have been successful BUT I wonder if that was because he was a bad actor, or if it's because he was expected to be the next Jackie Chan? Jackie missed the ultimate lesson from his teacher, that you have to give the child your time, attention, effort and patience. When you care about a thing or a person, that is what you do. The results don't just magic out of thin air. It takes a lot of dedication. If you want that level of discipline for your child, you either have to sacrifice your own life's ambition to get it done or find/pay someone else to do it for you. Otherwise, don't complain.

After he was done and about to pass out the teacher asked if he was still sick and Jackie said yes. He had to do a thousand more kicks and at this point his whole body was about to collapse. Sadly this is not limited to China, it's an unfortunate facet of conservative Asian culture, case in point: Goro Miyazaki. Son of the famous animator: Hayao Miyazaki, had an upbringing similar to Jaycee, he was mostly raised by is mother, as Hayao travelled the world looking for inspiration for anime, and spent long hours away from home animating his content, so when Goro came of age he was pressured by his family, and Studio Ghibli itself to follow in his father's path. Goro spend long hours of crunch time, learning to draw and animate, it has been rumoured he was verbally and physically chastised, as this is seen as character building by conservative Asians, bullying and hazing is par for the course. Although Goro had a career in landscaping, Hayao, Studio Ghibli and its fans pressured him into a career he did not want to pursue, he was a Miyazaki, and was expected to succeed Hayao, unfortunately, like Jaycee, Goro had no enjoyed the same success as his father, with some of his films flopping at the box office, and critical ratings, with Earwig and the Witch being one of Studio Ghibli's least successful film. Whether it's east or west, fame is all the same, it comes at the cost of children born to celebrities, harassed into keeping their parent's fame alive at all costs, regardless of that child's choices and identity, basically, their image is more important than yours.

Later on, once things calmed down, she reached out and Jackie supported them financially, although their relationship never developed.
His daughter was groomed by a much older english teacher from Canada, Andi Autumn, who later became an influencer. This teacher eventually convinced her to come to Canada to marry her, which both Jackie and her mother were extremely opposed to and forbid her from doing. She felt that it was unfair that BOTH her parents didn't allow her to go to a foreign country to marry a much older woman, and ran away to Canada.
There, she and Andi Autumn married without the blessing of her parents, naturally, and once started to talk all sorts of shit on social media about Jackie Chan. Her mother and Jackie repeatedly tried to get her to come back to China, until eventually they cut her off financially.
She is still there, with her spouse, as far as I know.

Nowadays I think my parents are trying to work on it, but the damage has been done. When it comes to most matters in my life, I generally reserve them for myself unless my parents need to know. I know that a lot of my opinions and actions are not approved of by my parents, so I just keep them out of my business as much as possible.

      This is bullshit.
Jackie Chan had a daughter outside of wedlock, with a mistress. The mistress, in this case, left to raise her daughter away from all the drama of being the child of a celebrity's affair and refused to have anything to do with Jackie.
Jackie Chan is not a good parent, and he was not a good husband either, but the whole situation with his dauther is not nearly as one sided as the media and many people who only read headlines seem to make it out to be.

Had to fight comunism, demons and a corrupt system that wants us dead, all just to survive. This being said my heart cries in pain when I hear about the tragedy of this milionare kid and his mega rich dad, that didn't get to enjoy all his dreams becoming a reality. I was worried about getting food but now I understand that fate shielded me of the real tragedies of life like not becoming a superstar, on top of life giving you one of the most privileged positions a human can have. Heart breaking, I tell you!
Also, 50 Cent is just as good of a father as Jackie. He was never there for his son, he left his wife raise him and now he blames the kid... The children education also falls on the shoulders of the father. A father is not just a provider, that's a slave master. A father is mentor, a guide, a support and a protector. It takes a new level of ignorance to throw money at your kid and expect them to grow into decent humans. 50 Cent and Jackie are both terrible fathers and terrible humans for blaming their kids for their inability to be real men and guide those children...

As someone of Chinese heritage I understand why Jackie Chan did the things he did, and his mindset is not that unusual among East Asian parents actually. When children don't work has hard as their parents expect them to (with the standards set by how hard they worked when they were young), accusations of being "lazy and ungrateful" are common, and this is an extreme example where fame and fortune amplified the problems that can come from this type of thinking.
Jackie thinks that by working hard and providing everything his kid (materially) needs he is properly loving his family and fulfilling his responsibilities as a father. And of course, he would feel disappointed when his son, despite having so many opportunities provided to him, chooses to behaves in a delinquent manner and squanders those opportunities, in stark contrast to what he did with much less.
I don't believe Jackie Chan was truly malicious at heart and that hated his son, but just horribly misguided as to how to properly raise Jaycee. I hope that they properly reconcile and that Jackie can realize his mistakes and make amends.

That said, Jackie Chan still did a poor job as a father. I think too many Asian parents in the past few decades have been only emphasizing success while not teaching proper values, leading to the infamous “Little Emperor” syndrome. It’s led to the creation of too many spoiled and useless young men.

Not speaking directly to the Chan family, as who knows what really goes on in the privacy of their family, but that's one thing I never understood about parenthood. People spend time regretting the hardships that they went through growing up, so they vow to themselves that their own children will never go through the same thing. Then when the child is living a life of comfort, the parents act surprised.
I dont say it to stick up for the younger generation, but they are the ones that need to be molded. They are living and viewing the world according to the rules that parents set forth. So if your son leaves his shoes wherever, guess who had the power to stop that.

    • @jackychen7769

My view is that experiencing a bad upbringing can be detrimental to parenting. For example, growing up with abuse might make you believe abuse is acceptable or normal, causing you to be more likely to inflict abuse yourself (which is why abuse victims are more likely to become abusers). For Jackie's case, perhaps the issue is that he thinks he's successful because of his bad upbringing rather than despite it, and that makes him think Jaycee is unsuccessful due to a lack of that bad upbringing.
If you've never seen how a good parent acts, what makes you think your vision of a good parent is actually good? Doesn't excuse his actions, but it explains it in a seemingly rational way imo. That being said, note that my personal bias is strong here. Reality is rarely so simple, but I think it's good to keep an open mind.

While I understand the public statements that Jackie Chan made, I don't agree with not being present at the trial. It was the least he could do and no one would blame him for it. Goes to show Jackie Chan was really upset by his son's actions. Glad they seemingly reconciled though.
Jaycee's letter also shows that he was mature enough to own up to his mistakes which was not what I expected out of a spoiled child. Hope he does well.

      @TGIFrank ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@augustinelau6053 Honestly for a movie star's son, nothing that was pointed out by Sunny or Jackie in this video makes me think Jaycee was particularly spoiled. The fact that his needs were met and he didn't have the discipline to take care of his belongings, that he didn't perform well in school and got mixed up in drugs, sounds a lot like my own upbringing in middle class America. I understand Jackie wanting his son to appreciate the gifts his career afforded him, but seeing his dad more than two weeks a year when he was growing up would have done far more for his development and well being as an adult than any amount of wealth and luxury.
For Jackie to then disown his son when his beloved dictatorship is making a public mockery of him over a relatively tame drug charge really shows how little interest he had in being a good father.

This is something I see a lot in modern day Chinese family, as well as something I struggle with myself. When my parents tell me how much more drive they have when compared to me, they over looked the fact that they were fighting for their survival back then- their drive immediately relates to if they can have dinner that night, and it is a completely different pressure young Chinese are facing today. For a long time, despite having food and shelter, I still felt so lost. The cultural pressure to “succeed” in this society was immense yet abstract. And the horror of it is something seemingly completely lost on the older generation, who had already found their place in the world, and thus they chalk it up to laziness. It’s not about lazy. It’s about the the struggle with self-actualization.

When I asked for why, she answered that her experience from the cultural revolution had scarred her for life, and in a constant fear for death and starvation. So she wants her daughter to be able to create wealth to be able to avoid that life…. Note that her daughter plays dark soul all day to spend her time, draws fanart from time to time, and is so pampered that she can’t share bathroom with anyone else. This disconnect genuinely scared me.

Both Jaycee and Jackie come from completely different worlds. Jackie is a great guy, but its obvious he was never suited to be a great dad. Some people no matter how inspirational just dont make good parents because they cant find the time to be both a positive public figure, and positive parental role model. On one hand, I sympathize with Jaycee.
As an asian myself raised by Tiger parents, i know how high expectations are for the kids. Jaycee's father being THE Jackie Chan certainly made things about 10X harder than it already is. He has much to live up to, and anything negative he does is much more likely to catch the public eye, giving him even less space to make mistakes and grow as his own person. And on the other hand, we can't really blame Jackie either. He is famous because of his great acting skills, his notorious propensity to do most of the dangerous physical stunts himself, his strong discipline in mastering kungfu, and his energy both on and off screen, and his absolutely madlad hardworking attitude. The man grinded himself to the bone to make sure that the miserable life he knew in his childhood is something his kid never had to experience.
But in the end, some things just cant ever balance out. Being rich and famous means you never want for anything, but it also means an extreme amount of pressure on both father and son to uphold their careers and how they look in the public eye. Its a curse and blessing, and we as outsiders looking in, can't do or say anything to change the situation. Its all the same for every celebrity and their kids.
