  • Most likely as an exercise leading up to the writing of his purely original Harpsichord Concertos, Bach adapted several concertos of his and from other composers into concertos for harpsichord and orchestra. The most original and remarkable of these was his adaptation of Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Four Violins in B minor.
Aside from the obvious change in soloists and transposition from B minor to A minor, the work is exactly the same as Vivaldi's original. That said, Bach's rearranging of the solo violin parts for harpsichords is so masterful that one could argue this version to be even better than the original, if only just.
The second movement of this concerto, just as in Vivaldi's original, is curiously comprised of two distinct sections: a bare and moody Largo followed by a faster section that could very well fool one into thinking that it's the concerto's finale (1:00).
Nevertheless, this two-part movement's ending is undeniably inconclusive, setting the stage for the concerto's real finale.
