How to think like a scientist | Quin Patton | TEDxKids@SMU

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. We use scientific thinking in labs and universities across the globe to answer some of the biggest questions we face as a species. But somehow, we fail to use that same scientific framework in our personal lives.
Quin Patton is a Dallas based food scientist and currently works as a product developer for PepsiCo, Frito-Lay. He has led many household staples to market, with some of his most recent projects including work on the Ruffles, Tostitos, and Chester’s brands. Quin is a passionate advocate for STEAM education models and has partnered in several Dallas education initiatives. In 2008 he started Mission Vision, a non-profit dedicated to distributing reading glasses to impoverished communities in Central and South America. Quin received a MS in Food Science from North Carolina State University and a BA in English from Davidson College. When not working on the next big tasty snack, you can find Quin out running, cycling, or climbing tall objects (albeit his Texas residence).

I have asked a friend of mine who doesn't study science or engineering and is a christian, and when I asked him what he thinks about going to Mars and make it Earth 2.0, his response was that all scientific research , especially the ones about physics are useless and meaningless and say that we should not make anything at all since the time before stone age, as in there was no need to ever make anything at all, as in if he was born as a baby in the stone age, assuming his mother left him alone , he would do nothing to survive and just sit there and wait until death, as he thinks that's the purpose of him and to follow "god's" orders. I was really annoyed by his thinking despite being a friend of him, but are people just this ignorant and pessimistic? While he said we should organise the Earth first, which I agree but he would never think of methods to do so, while using up energy, people would not be thankful for the invention of motors and electricity etc (whatever science has enabled us) but instead keep consuming and think that it happens because it happens. I am quite sad and sympathetic about people like these including my mom and sister, how should I do about this, because as there are more and more people who are not even just not interested in science but totally against it, we could possibly extinct, or in that case of no need to survival, then we could all just sit there without eating/thinking/drinking water for 3 days and die out once and for all, yet science still exists!!! I'm really frustrated about this issue, any suggestions. (those people truly think they can be what they are at without physics, not as in the subject but )

Justin Chan I didn't think people like that still exists write back if you want to talk about it more because that's very interesting for them to think like that and kind of upsetting because we live in a era of inventions and opportunity and there not using it to there full potential

Justin Chan I totally agree with you. I love physics and maths. And one day I wanted to be a scientist. I also want that everybody should understand this because we are here not just because we have to be but because there must be a scientific reason behind this.
