    The amazing thing about the SmallBox and Friedman amps in general is that every dial is useful even at their extremes. Bass doesn't turn to sludge at 10. Treble doesn't turn to ice daggers & the gain at 10 is damn good. Most amps fart out when the gain is dimed. Really spectacular.

    Two years ago I went for the Shirley! Every time I plug into this amp at the rehearsals room I get flashed from new by its great tone! It was the coolest Idea to take the fat sound and responding feel of a JTM45 and mix it with the agressive gain of a JCM800. My 2 favorite Amps in one headshell. With my Telly and my R8 the gain switch is standing on the highest gain stage, and I reduce the gain for rhythm sounds with a Mad Professor Underdrive! When I play my Stanford C30 Thinline (an absolute gorgeous made Gibson 330 copy), I use the lowest gain switch and push the amp with an MXR Micro Amp, and with my 60's Rebelrelic Strat again on the lowest gain switch pushing the Amp by a Kingtone Duellist! It really sounds gorgeous! Again, what a great amp!

      I love Boogies, and am currently playing through my buddies Trip Rec... However, when I can muster up tge cash... I'm definitely going with either a Friedman (not sure which yet.. they are all so amazingly badass) and/or a Supro Black Magic, or perhaps Dual Tone... Both Friedman's and the Supro reissues are such amazing tone monster amps.. wish I was rich, I'd own em all lol.

      I'm still trying to determine if the SmallBox is the right amp for me, we don't have any local dealers that carry them so I have to go on videos alone. Would you say the SmallBox can do that 90's hard/alt rock? Think Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots etc.

    Friedman are the best Amps on the market - PERIOD !! Dave has been around for a long time, knows what he is doing and has modified amps for all the big names in Guitarists for over 30 years. I want to like the EVH, and you have to admit, the price is very attractive for a high-gain head. The problem I have with them is the gain structure/quality. The gain sounds like 10,000 bees trapped in a jelly jar, and there isn't that clear-as-a-bell quality and punch ( like Richard Wallace commented here ) that Friedman amps possess. I forgot which company first coined the phrase - "The Tone you have in your head" , but certainly no amp company nails it like Friedman!

    What was you signal chain on these demos guitar - amp - ?? cabinet, DAW ? Did you do any post editing? Besides the bands you mentioned for which amp covers them the closest I play a lot of old 70s Skynyrd, ZZ Top along with 80s metal like Ratt, Ozzy, Motley Crüe, Kix the 90s weren't really my thing besides Sound Garden and Alice in Chains. If you had to choose between these two amps to cover all those bands which one would you pick?

      Bogner 4x12, sm57 + R121, Api preamp, into Logic Pro. If 70's is more important to you, go DShirtly, if 80's is more important go SmallBox. The Small box has 2 channels, so that might be important.

    Michael Nielsen, thanks for producing and publishing this video. I visited this video, because I do indeed have a Freidman small box--really like it. Question: I also compose and do production work for Film and various projects, and clients, and have decided to change my production desk. Yours looks somewhat similar to Danny Elfman's. Is it? Could you share with me (us) some details? ...and do you like the Doepfer? I have the Kawai VPC-1, which is a beast--figuratively and literally. Thanks!

    It was very hard for me to choose between these 2 in combo form in real life. I chose Small Box that day and still have it. Fantastic, even just to look at. But on another day, probably Dirty Shirley, for its huge voluptuous bottom and tube rectifier. Either way, it is a keeper of an amp. Dave Friedman designs absolute killers, and backs his product. That has been my experience..

    Hey brother, help me out here...
    I heard something about Dave not building the amps anymore and a company by the name of Boutique Amp Distribution is building them now and the quality isn’t the same anymore???

    • @djt6546
      @djt6546 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ha ha Chris you are in luck I read your post... When I e-mail Friedman address only one person answers “Dave Friedman”. It’s amazing. I can’t think of any other well know brand where the guru answers the calls so to speak. I tried a SB combo with Celestion G12H-150 Redback at home along side a BE-50 deluxe head. I used the Redback in the SB combo for A/B tone comparison. A richer and yet more articulate/textured tone with soooo many more ways to shape the tone had me sold in the BE-50 but for one problem. The BE-50 has an ultra dry clean Buxom Betty channel. So I e-mail Friedman. Dave responded and said for a $300 up charge he would build me a BE-50 with channel 1 changed to a Plexi like the SB and BE-100. Dave put me in contact with one of his partners stores to process the transaction. I did have to pay up front, but it’s now 2 months later and funnily enough UPS have just sent me an out for delivery note today! Today is going to be fun and noisy :-)
      So in summary yes Boutique Amp Distribution is.. well the distributor.. but Dave really is building these amps. He has signed and dated the back of my custom amp for me with a Sharpie ;-) and sent me picture of him with the amp as a keep sake. So e-mail Friedman on their basic address to get answers from the man himself. He’s busy and very short with his answers, but it is him alright 👍

    • @kirkmulder1599
      @kirkmulder1599 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get the tones either way, long story short.
      A combo comes with a built in cab and speaker and notably is semi open back. It’s a great choice for a grab and go and really can do anything the head can do and more....because you can still use it with other cabs. But the head will be lighter to carry (Yet requires external cabs to play through).
      If you don’t already have any cabs to play through I’d recommend a combo. If you have good cabs with good speakers then it’s tour choice. Honestly $200 more for a built in cab/speaker is a great deal. But it depends on your tastes and needs. Combo is 53lbs. Head is 33lbs for small box, similar for 40w DS.

    • @kirkmulder1599
      @kirkmulder1599 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the DS mini combo, which is a 10” speaker and combo is only 32lbs. I did replace the greenback for a 10” gold (alnico). But the stock speaker was great I just wanted the added power handling and I love alnico speakers. I’d definitely go combo on the 20w myself but again, can’t go wrong either way if you already have cabs.

    This was the first video that sparked my interest in these amps. A couple years later I bought the ds 40 with the gain switch after long deliberation (I wanted to like the sb 50 better). I chose the ds 40. When I got the opportunity to play both I played the ds first and was mesmerized, the sound instantly was the sound in my head..... I then switched to smallbox. Awesome but fou d myself almost instantly missing the chewy feel n sound of shirley. After 30 minutes of a/b testing them I consistently found myself craving the dirty shirley..... It was like doing cocaine.... U just want more and more and u can't get enough! And eventually ur wallet will be empty!

      My eyes opened the first time I strummed a chord on the DS... harmonic overtones aplenty and very organic sounding... Haven't pulled the trigger yet.. Thinking about DS 40. How's the headroom when playing clean live?

    • @chanceterrill5346
      @chanceterrill5346 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@asianaxeman it depends on what structure you have selected and how loud the amp is. With Master dimed gain on 7 in highest gain stage I can still get my les paul to cleanup enough to pull off Jimi hendrix cleans (rock n roll cleans) with volume on 2 but at 1. 5 to 1.75 in c olume I can get clean but band has to quiet down (this is highest gain settings as well). So with two more modes employing even less gain you'll have plenty of clean head room..... If u want really loud crystal clear cleans you'll have to go in lo input lowest gain structure and keep master below 7 (really really freakin loud still) after 8 it just gets more saturated anyways..... So unless your playing everything dimed with really high output pickups you'll have no problem getting cleans.... I don't n I use the highest gain setting n play in a two guitar band vocal only PA during rehearsals n like I said. No issue with cleans

A quick question about your Les Paul, judging by the headstock logo it looks like an older one,in amazing condition I might add, what year is it? & I'd like to hear your opinion on good years vs. bad years when it comes to Gibsons, Les Pauls more frequently come up in this discussion & the topic is highly debatable, would just like to hear your thoughts. I'm asking that because from youtube I mainly noticed the gain difference. Would it be possible to use a A/B pedal and use the low input for rhythm and high input for solos?

      If I had to work while I was on the island, I would pick the Dirty Shirley because it's very versatile and has a unique vintage modernness. If I go to battle on the island, I would take the X because it's brutal and loud! If I just had a nice little hut, with no responsibilities and just got to play guitar for fun: Small Box.

    Hi Michael, got a question for you: Would you pick Smallbox or BE-50 if you had to pick one ? It must be hard for you imagine a situation like that given your amp collection, but well... Also: you think Smallbox has enough gain for 80s shred-rock?

    • @joerobinson6199
      @joerobinson6199 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Emre Emre I’m a yr late but I just saw this. I had the SB and traded up to the limited. More more gain. It is my favorite amp. It’s also quiet for such a high gain amp. Takes dirt, fuzz, od pedals too. I have another amp that is good but will rename nameless. It’s good but I’m not crazy about the radio station I get. Now not everybody has this issue. It can be fixed easily with a part that costs about a dollar. I just haven’t fixed it yet. Really shouldn’t have to at that price. Anyway. Friedman for me all day long.

    • @djt6546

      Also consider custom build. I ordered a BE-50 with Plexi channel 1 mod direct through David Friedman himself, Nov 2020. I just e-mailed the standard address to start a conversation with Dave Friedman himself. The tonal shaping possibilities on the BE-50 blew the SB out of the water for me. But so wanted the Plexi channel instead of Buxom Betty clean on the BE-50. The custom order cost me $300 up charge on the base price of the BE-50.

I used 1 mic blend for the Soundgarden stuff, then a different blend for the VH stuff, then I changed it around again, and left it for all of the noodles and playthroughs. • @BigHairyGuitars
      @BigHairyGuitars  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man that's a tough one. If you are gonna be staying with the low gain / clean tones, and use pedals, then maybe the DS. But, CH1 on the Small Box will get you there too. The Shirley will be a little sweeter, the Small Box will be a little rougher.

    • @57Strat777

      Michael - thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I really appreciate it. When A/B comparing the two in your video, it is my imagination that the high-gain SB50 channel B allows more of the guitar's organic sound to come through giving the SB50 a more vintage sound compared to high gain on the DS?
