I was appointed to the Governing body of Ruffwood School by the local authority in the mid 1970s and have so many wonderful memories of the school until the time I left in the late 1980s. The Chair of Governors during this time was The Rev Terry Gibson who created Centre 63, shortly after he arrived in Kirkby in 1962. One of the Governors, Dr Wallis, had been a GP in Southdene, who travelled up from retirement in Shropshire to attend meetings, I recall the way in which the former British Rail were very understanding over retaining a rail link to the Ormside outdoor activity centre in Yorkshire that the school had a lease on for its pupils. It can be seen, how well many pupils enjoyed their time at school, and its impact on their future lives, with many examples of how successful social mobility was in the 60s 70s and 80s. When in local government, I proposed a road in Kirkby was named after Alan Barnes who led the school from 1959 until 1985. Its now located on the Shevington Park estate He retired to Suffolk and sent me his annual "Barnes Bulletin" until he passed away in 2008. Sadly Ruffwood, with its superb facilities, and beautifully laid out teaching and house blocks, were demolished not long after this film was made
