  • David-West documented five "surprises". Number one, according to his account, "Upon sighting the SOS officers, Alhaji Asari Dokubo shouted to his gang: 'Don't run. They are our people' (in Kalabari). The gang thereupon hailed the SOS officers with chants". Surprise Number 3: "The SOS officers never did anything to disperse the crowd of gangsters. In fact, the gangsters continued to chant war songs, threatening my life audaciously before the SOS officers". Surprise Number 5: "The SOS vans gave lift to the gangsters and they all together left the guest house compound. The gangsters were still chanting war songs in the SOS vans. It was about 6.30p.m. then". All of these, David-West reduced into a six-page letter dated September 14, 2001, addressed to Governor Peter Odili of Rivers. The typed letter included a page listing some of the 45 gangsters who had threatened to kill him. Among them was Asari Dokubo. Others were Lolo Iyalla,
