Thanks! Yeah! I remember the first time I heard this version. This is from the dear friends concert series, it was recorded from the stockholm one. Right now the distant worlds concert featuring this song is touring. Trust me, hearing this live is mind blowing! The next one is in Chicago on Dec 12, and Nobuo will be there!! If you have the chance to go don't miss it.
I have to say that this song brings me back to a time when i used to care about life, Final Fantasy has always been a series of videogames that inspire people to actually feel something. Sad really that most people dont do that anymore. Still i consider this as a MASTERPIECE.
She is Stephanie Woodling. Her version is my favorite among all the English versions of this song. I guess I still prefer the Italian version of Svetla Krasteva.
I have been humming this theme for almost 15 years and i have almost every version of the FF6 soundtrack and I have NEVER heard this version. You cannot know what this means to me, Thank you....and I love how you synced it up with the original cinema. WOW
I mean, I hate to be that guy, but I do have a preference for the SNES/PS1 lyrics myself... Still like the voice and all, just personal preference since I played the SNES version first, twas the first version I heard/read.
I had never thought games to be art until I played Final Fantasy VI. This... is amazing. It gives me emotion that I could never feel otherwise. Thank you for posting this.
For nostalgia I pulled out my SNES and started playing FFIII (FFVI to the rest of the world) - and I got to the opera part of the game and said "why haven't I seen a vocalized version of this song on the net?" Took me too long to find this one - it far outshines the rest of them out there. Great job.
Many years after my first play through of this game, I know why I and many other people tear up when we hear this song. For me I have never experienced a bond of love as deep as the love Draco and Maria had in the opera event in the game. I hear this and my heart, now almost made of stone from the heartbreak of the women I dated and loved who dumped me, breaks apart. God I hate being single, all I want is a woman near my age who will love me for who I am. Is that so much to ask?
Celes' storyline is arguably the most heartbreaking storyline in the Final Fantasy Sagas... The only final fantasy girl to outrank Aerith in my book.. (and that's pretty hard to pull off.)
O my hero, my beloved, Shall we still be made to part, The promises of perennial love Yet sing here in my heart... I'm the darkness, you're the starlight Shining brightly from afar. Through hours of despair, I offer this prayer To you, my evening star. Must my final vows exchanged Be with him and not with you? Were you only here to quiet my fear... O speak! Guide me anew. I am thankful, my beloved, For your tenderness and grace. I see in your eyes, so gentle and wise, All doubts and fears erased! Though the hours take no notice Of what fate might have in store, Our love, come what may, will never age a day. I'll wait forevermore!
If you haven't done so since you posted this, do yourself a favor and play this game immediately! Get the SNES, GBA, PSN or hell even an emulated version and PLAY IT! This game was one of the hallmarks of my childhood. Even now, nearly 20 years since I played it for the first time, it is the standard whereby I compare all other RPG's regarding characters, story, and music.
I agree Miss Crowe. I grew up playing that game from it the year it came out and it's still one of my favorite games of all time. We all know that you had to memorize (or write down lol ) the specific words that Locke read off of the score, and though the female was singing very beautifully she didn't sing the words correctly. It did bring back good memories of the game but it failed to capture me with bringing such an epic scene to life. A+ To the singer who has an amazing voice, it is not her fault that the words we're not as the game had them in 1994
This version is closer to the original japanese version. Plus, mezzo originally translated to italian so its been translated japanese, italian, then english.
I must be one of the few people who pictured Celes with a reletively deeper voice; she was a damn general in the army, on the same level as Kefka and Leo, did you guys really think she would be all dainty with a soft, high-pitched voice? Another thing: this voice is in the same range as the synthesized one in-game, they weren't going to pitch up the whole score when the part originally was for an Alto.
Imagine how impressive this was back in 1994. I remember reading that at the game's launch ceremony Uematsu himself cried of joy hearing the tune played in the presentation, recognizing how much effort he had put in making of ff6 the best game out there. That comment makes me feel sad...recent videogames have somehow lost this kind of magic. I suppose it's because the market is getting bigger and many SH just try to sell more copies.
@jmac1686 I've been wishing for a full blown CGI updated version ever since playstation 2 came out, but now with 3, OMG this would be so worth it. And like you said, this scene alone would make buying the game again worth it, not to mention it was one of the best ones written story wise and what had to be figured out.
The lyrics are from the new GBA version and I did the capture from the SNES one. But I can try to capture from the GBA version next. Thanks for watching The singers name is Stephanie Woodling (Maria), and I agree she has a beautiful voice.
There is... kind of. It is called The Dream Oath or Maria & Draco. You can see it live at the Distant Worlds concerts. However it doesn't include costumes ,acting or a full cast, but it does feature three live opera singers. It shows the same fragment shown in the game, plus the ending assuming that Locke and the others don't fall from the ceiling.
I KNOW! I was just thinking that... it's supposed to be all grand like where they add strings one at a time and then it eventually swells into the minor brass part. Now it's some quick sappy string part with a lame major chord to end it.
i actually always wronged the lyrics in games. hahaha. but when i heard it.. it was so lovely song. i wish it has a 3d version of The Opera with real voice sung by Celes!
@TheJazzer94 Can you tell that to Richard Wagner? German Opera is almost as old as the Italian one, and there is opera in other languages as well. That said, this segment is an aria, "Aria di Mezzo Carattere" and Square did get someone to sing it in Italian. Actually, the first voiced version was in Italian, and performed by the Bulgarian soprano Svetla Krasteva. This version appeared at the end of the PSX version of FF6. I can't post links so look for "Grand Finale - Aria di Mezzo Carattere"
@jmac1686 I can see it in my mind... the camera would be used for maximum drama, and the dance section in the middle could be a "press X here" microgame to add twirls or flourishes (it would have to move Celes on its own, though), and failing bad enough would be what makes her late to the top (to keep that failure in)... even with 3DS/PSP graphics, it would be a visual feast well worth it. Extra bonus points if it's VA'd like this, triply so if the Japanese audio is there as well.
Okay...I've never played FF VI, I know NOTHING about the story, I have no clue of the story of all the characters and I'm almost crying. I can barely imagine how it must be for the players.
Yeah, she was separated from Draco. In the next scene Draco appears to take Maria back, he fights prince Ralse (who is keeping her and wants to marry her) and of course he wins. In the game the opera is interrupted halfway and something funny happens though.
Maria starts singing the last verse Guy:The prince is looking for a dance partner. Maria Continues. Guy: Uh...Maria? The Love of Maria starts singing with her. Guy:ENEMY!!! Celes:THAT WAS NOT IN THE SCRIPT BITCH!!!
@twilightwindwaker The singer has to be a soprano, but other than that, there are many that have interpreted this song in English. There is an official one for the Italian version (Svetla Krasteva), and another one for the japanese version but I don't know her name. Check the distant worlds or grand finale CDs for other singers doing it. The ending in the game does not have a second singer, in this case the guys doing the voices for Ralse and Draco also sing here.
@SuperChrisSixtyFour The original SNES translation was supposed to be poor. The lyrics for dear friends / distant worlds concerts were taken from the GBA translation which is a bit more faithful to the japanese original. I also have nostalgic feelings for the original, but I have to accept that this translation is pretty good.

thanks @shadowcecil. 1. They are the updated lyrics from Dear Friends / Distant Worlds and GBA. As you should know, the first translation of FF6 was rushed and not perfect, yet it has a nostalgic value for which we all love it. Still, these are actually closer to the japanese originals, so they are more accurate. 2. Do yourself a favor and Google Stephanie Woodling. Not large, not old. 3. About the tune. @Clesarie I actually like this voice a lot. Still, you may want to listen to the Japanese version with Etusya Ota singing. I cannot post links, but look for "Tour de Japan Maria and Draco"
This is how I imagined Celes' sounded back in 1994. I'd just sing along with her and imagine my voice sounded that epic.
I love this scene so much. Very epic! And Celes is so beautiful....
Beautiful. Just plain beautiful. *wipes tear from his eye* Now if only the SNES could have handled voices like that.

This is the most beautiful song ever...makes me cry because nobou says of a love so beautiful and this song describes all the emotion of love.
This gave me chills! Thank you! This is beautiful!
Yes, it was beautiful and Nobuo Uematsu was there too!
