The group around the Toripolliisi statue ( market square police) were probably freshmen of Oulu University and people with them in colourful overalls with patches were older students showing them the town and telling student habits and traditions.

Yes, Finland is called "The Land of a Thousand Lakes", while Minnesota's nickname is "The Land of 10,000 lakes". This is a little backwards as there are roughly ten times as many lakes in Finland as in Minnesota. It also turns out that Minnesota( along with Michigan and Wisconsin)has one of the highest percentage of people with Finnish descent in the US, at roughly ten times the national average. Since the Northern part of the state is similar to Finland in many respects, this is not surprising. I was born in that part of the state and am of Finnish heritage.(In fact, my paternal Grandfather was born just 50 mi NE of Oulu, in Pudasjärvi)

"Toripolliisi" (with at least two l-letters in Oulu dialect) statue ("Market square policeman") was erected in the 1980's to guard over newly renovated square. It commemorates the policemen on duty at the square in 1934-79. Today the statue is an unofficial symbol of Oulu.
Oulu ("Ou" rhymes with "oh", "lu" with "put") is a cycling capitol of Finland. When walking follow the signs or keep right.

You probably checked that out already, but the islands where you were walking are in the the delta of river Oulujoki, which flows to the Gulf of Bothnia, the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea. Nice that you saw that wedding couple. Here in Finland it's most common to have weddings in saturdays.

Yeah, there was indeed a castle in Oulu once, but it was destroyed when the castle's powder cellar exploded in 1793. And as you saw, only the foundations are left of it. If you are planning another summer trip to Finland in the future, I warmly recommend the town of Savonlinna in Eastern Finland, where the medieval St. Olaf Castle (Olavinlinna) is located. This place is situated in the heart of the so-called Finnish Lakeland, where you can find lakes everywhere. And if you're lucky enough, you might catch a glimpse of one of the most endangered mammals in the world: the Saimaa ringed seal. 🦭

Western Finnish and Eastern Finnish folkdance cultures have a lot in common, even though the influences of one come from the western neighbor and the other from the eastern neighbor.

The Italica Taberna on the corner of the square, visible on 2:12, is a really good Italian restaurant.
The statue got its name (Toripoliisi/market police) from the three market police officers who worked at the market between 1934 and 1979, who supervised order in the area. Toripoliisi was financed by a public collection started in 1985, which also sold postcards, small plaster sculptures and Antelli statue-themed gingerbread. The statue was unveiled in September 1987.

Finland, the land of thousands of lakes. It's funny that you mentioned Minnesota, because the Great Lakes region has traditionally been an area where American Finns have been abundant. In the United States, Michigan and Minnesota have been the most significant migration areas for Finns. There is even a town in Minnesota called Finland. Surprise.
But I still recommend visiting Hailuoto before you return the car, if you are still on your way.

Was about to say the same. You can see those fairly regularly in Oulu levels. You can see those in south Finland too. Helsinki is not very good place for those because of light pollution. So you see those just when those are really strong. But bit outside of Helsinki with less light pollution it's not uncommon. Several times a year and now when solar activity is on it's peak probably several times per month is very much possible, but unfortunately clouds often block the view.

Always love seeing foreign tourists like Oulu!
As for the Oulu Castle: The brick wall thing is part of the original medieval castle. Yes, there's been fires and such, but the big reason it's in ruins because it blew up. (long story short, incompetence from Russian soldiers.) The wooden tower is the original observatory built by University of Oulu. (They have a considerably more modern observatory at the Linnanmaa campus, I think. /mild sarcasm)
Oh, and the cathedral isn't the only thing under renovation. Sooo many places have been unavailable this past year and a bit. Can't wait until the main library opens again.

    • @markonikula2611
      @markonikula2611 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

The present-day ruins on the Linnansaari island remain from an even later castle, which was built in 1605 by order of King Charles IX. The king's power of attorney of April 8, 1605, first orders the construction of Kajaani Castle and then orders the rebuilding of Oulu Castle. According to the order, the old wooden structures had to be demolished and a rampart with fire shelters had to be built around the island.
The castle was badly damaged in 1715, when Russian forces burned it during the Great Northern War. Final destruction of the castle took place on July 31, 1793, at 10:45 p.m., when lightning set the other one of the powder magazines on fire; as a result, the powder cellar exploded and destroyed the building almost completely.
Wooden constructions on the remaining powder magazine date from 1875 when the Oulu School of Sea Captains built their observatory on the site. The building was designed by architect Wolmar Westling. The building has been a cafeteria since 1912 with a small exhibition on the castle history.

@@kognak6640 Aaah! I admit I was befuddled. I was thinking of Russians burning the wooden parts down in 1715 during the Great Northern War, so it was not an act of incompetence but actual dipshittery on the part of Russian soldiers. The explosion was indeed in 1793 due to a lightning strike, so no one's fault really (more of an engineering disaster, why the hell was anyone storing gunpowder unsafely to begin with.)

A common example sentence for Oulu dialect is "Ookkonää Oulusta, pelkääkkönää polliisia?". In proper formal Finnish that is "Oletko sinä Oulusta, pelkäätkö sinä poliisia?" (Are you from Oulu, are yo afraid of police?) To selebrate this, Oulu decided to have a statue of a police.
Plenty of lakes, and you are not even on lake district. :-) Minnesota claims to have 10 000 lakes. Finland claims over 180 000.

You said that there was so much water all around, and that is definitely true! While it may not look like it on a map, Finland is in a way practically an island, at least considering the logistics. With Russia to the east and border with Sweden very far north and very weak land connections there, we rely mostly on ships to get cargo from Europe to here. Finland would be very much woulnerable if shipping got disrupted, especially because even the land connection between Denmark and Sweden is just a single bridge and our other land connections going to our de-facto enemy.
That's why we have a strong navy where I also served my conscription!

About the bronze police: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toripolliisi The water in Oulu is part of Bothnian bay so it is sea, not river or lake. So you could, if you had a boat, hop onboard in Oulu and sail all the way to USA.

As an Oulu citizen I would call the waters in this video as the Oulu river delta - and not quite yet the Gulf of Bothnia.

    • @mattimatkalainen

@@timoterava7108 Doesn´t matter what locals call it. Fact is it is the Gulf on Bothnia and you can sail from center of Oulu to where ever you like.

It is a matter of taste where the river ends and the sea begins. There is no clear definition. Also as the land still continues to rise 90 cm in 100 years the delta becomes all the time more and more as river and less and less as sea.
One can sail e.g. from Lappeenranta and Tornio - and London - to where ever one wants, but they are still by a lake and a river - and a river - respectively. Being able to sail somewhere is not really a valid argument.
