    I knew Mr Randy for almost 50 years, took him to an ER in Knoxville after a concert. Was working for the KCSO and had an unmarked car that night…perfect way to move an Eagle without fanfare. We stayed in touch thereafter. His passing was so sad. He never seemed to fully understand his contributions to popular music. He was always so humble and, in many ways, felt not worthy of the accolades. Rest in well-deserved peace. 🙏🙏🙏

      He was suffering from exhaustion, bronchitis, a massive rino-tracheal infection. I took him in the Morgue entrance so as to avoid a crowded ER waiting room and straight into an ER treatment bay. He laughed when he saw the exterior Morgue sign, saying he wasn’t dead yet but said he felt like it. He was set upon by 3 MDs and 2 ex-Army RNs with Vietnam experience.

    After viewing Randy Meisner in many videos with and without the other Eagles, he seems sooo much more relaxed and visibly happy without Frey or Henley making everyone tense. Randy should have become a much bigger star! I hope he is doing well. He seems like such a quiet, mellow guy.

    • @elwoodmcdougal5406
      @elwoodmcdougal5406 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      David Baldinger Randy’s biggest nemesis in The Eagles was Glenn Frey. As stated on another post, Meisner was content to play bass and sing background vocals with The Eagles. Frey was the one who pushed Meisner to the point of physical altercation on a number of occasions before Meisner was finally fed up and called it quits.

    • @ingfig1
      @ingfig1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@elwoodmcdougal5406 no no no... Randy loved to sing lead .. check him out in one of the early Eagles songs called Tryin’ .. (there are two different versions on YT) .. wow what a rocking high voice and style that Randy had! He had loads of fun singing and playing in many high profile bands after he left Eagles, but his recorded albums were never promoted by the recording companies .. I think the Eagles manager Irv Azoff had something to do with that .. if Randy were to succeed after leaving them, the Egoes (Frey and Henley) would not be happy about that! Everybody who has ever met Randy says he is the sweetest, most humble man in the music world. He took a lot of bullying from Frey over a long time .. watch this vid at about the 3.07 minute mark, Frey is throwing double punches at Randy’s face while Randy was performing .. .... th-cam.com/video/qFwnVj-ZQWk/w-d-xo.html .... after years of this despicable treatment, Randy eventually snapped when Frey called him a vulgar name and he punched Frey, then left the band and never regretted it, altho he had been one of the two veteran founding members (he and Bernie Leadon) while Frey and Henley were the rookies in the band at that time.
      Randy and Bernie brought the experience and professionalism to the band. It was Randy’s soaring voice, his Motown-Inspired bass playing (check out his bass playing in the 1973 performances of Tryin’ and Outlaw Man), Randy’s and Bernie’s high harmonies and Bernie’s excellent instrumentation that got the band noticed in the overcrowded country/rock world. They all got along fine when they were all equal, but that was before Frey and Henley appointed themselves as “the bosses“ who got to decide whose songs would be sung and who would sing them (promoting themselves of course) ... and suddenly Randy and Bernie went from singing lead to only singing backup for the Egoes. Bernie left relatively unscathed when he saw it becoming “the Glenn and Don Show”. Randy hung in there for years after that.
      The issue of Randy singing Take It To The Limit : when he wrote the song with those beautiful high notes, he had a premonition .. he feared that if the song became a hit he would have to hit those high notes at every live performance. Now of course he could hit those notes, but with live shows there’s no do-over if he fails, unlike in the recording studio. Well, of course the song became the Eagles first million-seller even tho the song was never promoted! And poor Randy had to hit those high notes at every concert.. even when he had flu and stomach ulcers (from the grueling 11 month Hotel California tour in 1976/1977) .. he grew to dread singing the song in case he didn’t hit the notes, which would be disappointing for the fans and embarrassing for him - like dropping his pants on stage. In some of the YT vids of this song you can see he’s not well and straining to reach the high notes. He nailed it tho in the Eagles concert at the Capitol in 1977 .. the best performance I’ve seen of him singing this song. He’s a great singer, both lead and backing harmony .. remember: he left *after* the Hotel California tour in ‘76/77.. so in all the songs until then, all those wonderful high harmonies and bass notes are Randy’s. Not many hits came from Eagles after Randy left.. and they broke up for 14 years just two years after Randy left them, and then broke up again just after regrouping (without Bernie and Randy, but with Joe Walsh and Tim Schmit as salaried performers and not as members of Eagles Inc.) Three founding members of the Eagles left for the same reason (Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner, and Don Felder) .. the reason being the tyranny of Frey and Henley.
      The irony is that without Randy and Bernie there would have been no Eagles, and without Don Felder there would have been no Hotel California.

    • @ingfig1
      @ingfig1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@maynardweaver7505 .. Yeah, it was bittersweet for me to love their music then find out what @$$es Frey and Henley were. Before Frey’s death I was ignorant about the band - I had bought their Greatest Hits album (in 1976) and the Hell Freezes Over dvd (1994), not knowing that the line-up had changed, and trying to work out whose voice it was singing my favorite song - Take It To The Limit! I knew it wasn’t Frey or Henley, but also it didn’t sound like Timothy B Schmit, so who …? When Glenn died I realized I knew nothing, and went looking for info - and then came across two names who weren’t on the Hell Freezes Over line-up. I developed a voracious appetite for info about the mysterious Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon, and wow, turns out that **they** (not the Egoes Frey and Henley) were the soaring wings on those Eagles. Pity that Bernie didn’t join the Doobie Brothers, who are still playing bluegrass-rock fusion after 50 years, with no toxic egomaniacs amongst them, and their enjoyment of playing together is infectious. John Beaudin’s YT channel Rock History Music has some great interviews with both Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner, and I got some cool insights into their personalities. What a sweet guy Randy is, feeding wild animals from his porch in the LA hills, and just loving to be in a band making music, whether playing for a handful or an arena full of people - “there’s nothing better!” he says.
      Have you heard Randy’s earliest records? A wonderful career, from age 15, playing bass and singing lead on singles records -
      Here is a very young Randy at age 16 (in 1962) singing lead with incredible vocal expression for a 16-year old, in the Elvis era, with The Drivin’ Dynamics - in a song which was released as a single record in Nebraska, where he is from (imagine having a record released at age 16!) - “Kansas City”
      …. th-cam.com/video/AhPFCS-vmxQ/w-d-xo.html …
      Randy ( at age 18), singing again with The Drivin Dynamics. His voice is still very young, but even at that age he sang with so much feeling. And notice how much his voice has changed in only two years. “You’re So Fine” :
      …. th-cam.com/video/MIekBzwFauE/w-d-xo.html ….
      Randy singing lead vocal at age 21 (sounds Beatles-esque) with The Poor - “She’s Got the Time” (1967) :
      …. th-cam.com/video/Klleme7wC9U/w-d-xo.html …
      So when Randy co-founded Eagles in 1971 at age 25 he came with almost ten years of experience with singing lead and playing bass in bands! He also gave Eagles their first million-seller - Take It To The Limit, which was hijacked by Frey and Henley (they were known for doing that - “let us help you finish your song ”, so they could get their names on the credits and their hands on the royalties!)
      Have you watched any of the early (1972-3) Eagles concerts …? They’ve all disappeared from YT (thanks to Henley) because they really show who were the great talent in the early days, and it wasn’t the Egoes - with Frey as quite a liability high as a kite lurching and stumbling on stage, giggling at his own jokes like a drunken schoolboy, and Henley smashing those drums insensitive to the song being played! . I particularly enjoy seeing Bernie pushing back (a muscular 6 foot of him) against the attempted domineering by puny Frey - at times leaning over Frey and singing into his face. And Bernie was the natural leader in those early days - he often stood with his back to the audience, facing Henley to keep Henley in sync with the rest of the band, and Bernie bringing his instrument down in a definitive swoop to indicate the end of each song. Also, Bernie wrote all the iconic music for Eagles third hit “Witchy Woman” which was the first song composed by only Eagles band members (Henley wrote lyrics).

    Reasonable cover. I noticed some people mentioned DC as Mr. Meisner's best performance. But after I heard the one in Houston, I decided I loved that one, because it was so obvious he wasn't feeling well that night. I can't see, so I relied on some fan comments on a Facebook group to learn that he seemed to try to clear his throat or something at the beginning, but I didn't need that commentary to figure it out. You could hear it! Yet he still nailed the high note then!

    Very much a part of its time, that's for sure. For what it's worth, the best Poco album was Legacy, the reunion album featuring Meisner , and one that Marx used his celebrity to bring about (and very much to his credit). The relationship between Meisner and Schmit has always been interesting, and the memory of Schmit saluting Randy during his HoF speech and nearly bringing him to tears. So yeah, I'm glad that I got to watch this. I probably saw it back in the day, I was 15, but hadn't quite hit my Eagles phase just yet, it was coming soon though.

    In 1977, the Eagles performed live at The Capital Center in Washington D.C. When Randy sang 'Take It To The Limit,' it must have been his best live performance, ever. The whole concert was great. You can probably get it on TH-cam. Also, next time you listen to 'Hotel California, focus on his bass playing - especially on the outro guitar solos. Fantastic!

    I'm almost at a loss for words........while I admire Richard Marx for trying to cover this song I respect Randy Meisner even more for allowing it at all. There is only 1 man who can do this song justice, only 1 man who can hit those high notes: Randy Meisner. At least he had the class to adjust the song to the changes to his voice. Some songs should never be messed with.

      Yeah. Did you see the later comment someone made about Randy sounding terrible? An awful thing to say considering he'd had surgery. It must have been in '79 or '80 or sometime around then. Yeah, he's made mistakes as well, but I dare anyone who's perfect to cast the first stone.

    Here comes a little truth: To those who thought, much like myself, that Timothy B. Schmitt should go "Van Halen" and just step in for Randy Meisner like there was no change...He didn't want to. He was asked by both Glenn Frey and Don Henley to sing "Take It To The Limit" as part of the encores in their live shows(Meisner's version is still one of their 3 fan favorite songs by polls), and declined to do so. He had and still has the utmost respect for Randy Meisner, and didn't want to just be a "replacement player". Glenn Frey and Don Henley actually collaborated for the first time in months to complete "I Can't Tell You Why" because they absolutely thought that Tim's voice needed to be featured as a lead on a song, and it went to number 1!!!! Now, that being said, only, and ONLY if Randy Meisner joins the Eagles on their "History" tour should this song be performed. Randy has had some serious health issues and was invited, but has had to decline, thus far. And, Randy WAS looking for a way out. He was a co-dependent person who was a devoted father and husband, as long as he was with his family. That's why he sought out the groupies and the over-indulgent drug and alcohol escapes. He was afraid to be alone with himself. I've been there and experienced it. If you feel "alone" like that, you'll seek out ANY form of companionship or "other time-passing" vice. It doesn't matter who or what it is. That's part of the reason his health is so bad, now. He's been hiding from his "lone" true self.

    • @50goldstrat101
      @50goldstrat101 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Hi Virginia,
      You're right on the money. Timothy is one hell of a guy. I respect him for not allowing Frey to "grandstand him." I can't tell you why and Take it to the limit are the two of my favorite Eagles songs. I feel for Meiser. I have been there in my life too and it is one painful, roller coaster ride. In spite of that, he was able to sing beautifully and is an excellent bassist and guitar player as well. He was such a good looking young guy. He doesn't look well now, but still sports that, "signature smile of his." I Hope that he is happy and comfortable now.all of the fighting and commanding from Frey always troubled me. I know it's their business, but Meiser and Felder are highly talented, good people, who got raw deals. Meiser and Schmit had worked together for years with Poco. They both developed their collaborative styles in "country rock," there, I believe.
      Bottom line; I will always love the Eagles music. To this very day, when Hotel California or any of their songs comes on, I feel good and never tire of any of it!
      Have a wonderful day!
      Wayne~
      PS: good conversation!

      Interesting read and I agree that no one can sing this song as Randy could... I heard that he's not in good health as you point out. I heard that in other circles as well. But are his health probs related to drugs for sure? His tenure with them was for only 6 or 7 years (though probably felt like an eternity, having to deal with Frey & Henley) and I think they all did drugs. Henley, Frey, Schmidt, Walsh & Felder all seem to be doing fine (correct me if I'm wrong). Maybe Randy continued that lifestyle as a solo artist (early 80's) as well and while performing with Rick Roberts (early 90's)... I'm about to read Felder's book. I hear it's a good read & maybe it will answer these questions.

      no no no...
