    As a protestant Christian, this was insightful. Father Mike is often a welcome source of information for my own misconceptions about the Catholic Church.

      Carlos Rodriguez,
      PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY AS IF YOUR ETERNAL “LIFE” DEPENDED ON IT
      In the Book of Hebrews Chapter 10 in context the author was talking to “baptized” Christians (Hebrews 10:22) telling them to not be “neglecting to meet together” in “the Church” - being the ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH. Why “the Church”???
      ***Hebrews **10:26**-29 “For IF WE SIN DELIBERATELY after receiving knowledge of the truth, THERE NO LONGER REMAINS A SACRIFICE FOR SINS, BUT A FEARFUL PROSPECT OF JUDGMENT, AND A FURY OF FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES………..HOW MUCH MORE PUNISHMENT DO YOU THINK WILL BE DESERVED BY THE MAN WHO HAS SPURNED THE SON OF GOD, AND PROFANED THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT BY WHICH HE HAS SANCTIFIED, AND OUTRAGED THE SPIRIT OF GRACE”.***
      What does Sacred Scriptures clearly say “IF WE SIN DELIBERATELY” or willfully break any of the commandments whether the old (10 Commandments) or NEW (Laws of LOVE or refusing to LOVE as Christ commands per John 13:34)??? If “THERE NO LONGER REMAINS A SACRIFICE FOR SINS, BUT A FEARFUL PROSPECT OF JUDGMENT”, then how does one obtain reconciliation with GOD again???
      We must examine the old covenant to fully understand the NEW COVENANT. In Leviticus 5:5-6 and Numbers 5:5-9 we can understand what an old covenant Jew had to do to receive GOD's forgiveness. Additionally, GOD in the Books of Leviticus and Numbers any time personal “sin” is mentioned you will read over and over again “THUS THE PRIEST SHALL MAKE ATONEMENT FOR A MAN’S SINS AND IT WILL BE FORGIVEN” (Lev 4:20, 4:26, 4:31,4:35, 5:6, 5:10, 5:13, 5:16, 5:18, 6:7, 7:7, 12:8, 14:18, 14:19, 14:20, 14:29, 14:31, 15:15, 15:30, 16:32, 16:33, 19:22 Num. 6:11,15:25, and 15:28). In the old covenant, GOD uses ordained “men”, the Leviticus Priesthood, to administer His forgiveness.
      Now, does GOD keep His WORD and covenant promises??? GOD promises to have a perpetual priesthood per His covenant in Numbers 25:12-13 and Malachi 2:4-7 and has WORDS of “forever” in Exodus 29:7-9, 40:15, and 1 Chronicles 23:13. Then, GOD promises to have a perpetual priesthood in Jeremiah 33:14-22 NEW COVENANT PROPHECY. Additionally, in context of “gathering the nations” in Isaiah 66:18 GOD states in Isaiah 66:21 “some of them also I will take for priests” meaning no longer based on Levi tribal lineage in the NEW COVENANT. In John Chapter 13, we see Jesus Christ fulfilling His Father’s Levi Covenant promise and Malachi 3:3 prophecy, when He sits down in the upper room “purifying” the NEW COVENANT PRIESTHOOD with a “washing”. This “washing” was a “forever” priestly liturgical GOD command in Exodus 30:21 in order to perform any altar work or sacrifice.
      What “same” power does the Son of GOD give to His ONE and ONLY established Church or “the Church” per Matthew 16:19, 18:18 and specifically explained to the NEW COVENANT PRIESTHOOD by Jesus in John 20:21-23??? In 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 St. Paul describes what Jesus Christ did was He “GAVE US THE MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION” and concluded “SO WE ARE AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST”. An “ambassador” wields what kind of power as an “official representative” of Christ or more specifically explained in “the Church” as “persona Christi”???
      Please come to your real home and be “reconciled” to “the Church” HIS ONE BODY (Ephesians 4:4-6). What did Jesus Christ create, pray for in John 17:21-23 and die for??? If you really LOVE Jesus Christ, then you will respond to His prayer and join the “ONENESS” that He created. The “Lamb of GOD” wants to unite with you in the NEW COVENANT PASSOVER (Luke 22:19) in His ONE and ONLY established Church, so we all can be “perfectly ONE”. May GOD richly bless you on your journey.

      Greg Aitchison Certain aspects of the Catholic Church rub me the wrong way. For instance, I understand the rationale behind the papacy being given to Peter (Fr. Mike made a great video, if I'm not mistaken), but I think the idea itself is a misinterpretation of text taken beyond its intention. And it actually goes against most biblical teachings being against a centralized theological authority other than God. The theocratic state of Israelites wanted a king and God told them it was a bad idea and they got Saul. A third of Thomas Paine's Common Sense is dedicated to this idea that God disliked placing figures of authority in a position that might seem to replace Him. And for much of Catholic history, the Pope has acted much more as a king than as a prophet or priest.
      I have other issues like the patron saints replacing the patron Roman gods, but all in all, I think Catholics are Christians just as much as I am. We just disagree on the specifics. And I often respect their dedication and unity more than that of most protestants.
      Who knows, maybe someday I'll be convinced.

      Carlos Rodriguez I’ll certainly agree with you that there have been many, many people in the 2000 year history of the Church, who did not live up to the demands of their office. Still, do not let their sins be what holds you back from the Christ, who is Truly Present in the Eucharist.

    As one born and raised in the Catholic church, this very issue has always been a thorn in my side and ONE reason I chose to exercise my faith in a different church. This was the best explanation I have ever heard for confessing my sins to a priest. Honestly, it's the first time I've heard a priest admit that going to God first is a good idea, and that it isn't the priest himself who "grants" me forgiveness but God through him. I'm not sure I'll ever fully return to the Catholic church but I do appreciate the clarification I got from this video. Fr Mike, I wish I was closer to your location, I believe we could discuss and break a lot of barriers today's Christians have against the Catholic church.

    Fr Mike, you make an excellent and very convincing point: no one baptizes oneself! Sin is not only against God but separation from Christ's body the Church and we have to be re-admitted through the priest whose power is conferred by Christ. It seems Christ really and truly understands our psychology and what level of humility it would take to confess our sins to another. Tremendous healing in this sacrament. Thanks again!

Thiefels (the priest who heard my 1st Confession some 45 years ago) telling us that God knew we were physical creatures and so he used physical acts to dispense His divine grace. In other words, all of the sacraments have a physical component to them because we can relate to physical things. So the act of "saying" our sins is God's way of playing to our strength ... He's leveraging our physical nature, in a sense.

I feel relieved and grateful to have God’s mercy and gift of confession. Thank you for your explanation Fr. Mike!!

    I love confession! There was a point in my life where I was going into mortal sin over, and over, and over again. In confession, I felt so terrible that I kept losing the battle, that when I broke down and cried. Not just because of my wrong doings but also because I knew his forgiveness was going to flood me. I am so thankful for this sacrament, every time I leave the confessional I start over again.

    Thx for this Fr Mike. I needed it.
    Today, I had a little misunderstanding w my co worker when this topic came about. I just learned today he’s a self taught bible person. Never had gone to church & perhaps not even baptized as a Christian but seems to be very interested in the words of God written in the Bible.
    He quoted me verses that refute my own understanding of how & why we go to a priest for confession etc. Also mentioned a verse in the book of Hebrews relating to the torn vestments, something like that.
    Truth be told, Im not fully Bible oriented, but do know some verses or passages, enough to stand my ground as a Catholic. I try not to argue in the negative sense of the word, but it seems to always go that route.
    My coworkers though he’s aiming to learn on his own, doesn’t want to participate w any Christian organization. So kinda hard to have one see the Goodness & Mercy of God, when the focus is all about or relating to God’s Wrath. He however doesn’t agree with Christians divided, which I appreciate Fr Mike mentioning here that confession removes that division.
    Cant really say much anymore to explain not defend but was already shunned & the discussion was dropped. I apologized made peace & agreed to disagree. Then left it at that. And on top of that, Im not really at the moment in a good place spiritually. So in short, had no ammo - kinda feel crappy now coz I feel I blew it w/God.
    Saught ur sight immediately Fr Mike to get an explanation on this topic - glad u had one - ty.
    Any advice on this matter, would really appreciate it. Thx again!

      Thanks for sharing Travis. I converted to the Catholic Church last year while in college from a Protestant background, and I was mortified to make my first confession. In the end, the Church is a hospital for sinners and not a museum for saints. The priest is supposed to act in the person of Christ in the confessional, which means showing you Christ's tender compassion, infinite love, and inexhaustible mercy ‒ the priest should not shame you for your sins but should rejoice with you for coming to the Sacrament of Reconciliation because sin separates us from Christ. Also, I've been told by a couple of priests that after they are done listening to confessions, they spend time praying for the grace of divine amnesia to forget the things they have heard. One last thing is that according to the laws of the Church, priests can't tell anyone about your sins you tell them in confession or they would be excommunicated (kicked out of the church permanently) ‒ even if you told them in confession that you murdered somebody. www.catholicstand.com/get-fear-confession/

    • @urfavebookworm
      @urfavebookworm 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dallasbrat81 he never directly mentions the term “confession” or “reconciliation” but he does say “confess your sins to one another” (James 5:16) and at another point he says “whoever’s sins you forgive will be forgiven, and whoever’s sins you do not forgive will not be forgiven” (John 20:23) to his disciples, as well as “if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9) as well as proverbs 28:13- “he who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.” That’s exactly what we do in confession. Does Jesus not urge us if we have a grievance against someone to go to them and obtain forgiveness? If you have an issue with someone, if you’re truly sorry for the pain you caused them, that is legitimate, but is it not better to go to the person, to confess your sin against them, and to make it right, face to face? That’s what we do in confession. What is sin if not the greatest grievance against God himself? If you could know for certain that you could go and have a clean slate, would you not do it? Is it not humbling to confess your sins out loud, and powerful to reject them with your own tongue? Sure, God can forgive our sins without the help of a priest, but we are physical people, so God uses visible things to help us understand invisible graces that we receive from things we cannot comprehend in our feeble minded humanity. Not only that, but I have found that confession is incredibly good for my conscience, as confession is incredibly difficult and I don’t like doing it, so I often will rethink my actions before doing something rash.

      roger,
      PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY AS IF YOUR ETERNAL “LIFE” DEPENDED ON IT
      In the Book of Hebrews Chapter 10 in context the author was talking to “baptized” Christians (Hebrews 10:22) telling them to not be “neglecting to meet together” in “the Church” - being the ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH.

      @Agustin-Plu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @stapme Ehh I just don't buy that as an excuse to leave the Church. It’s not like Jesus didn’t know that people were going to sin; He knows all - He’s God. The Church, like Jesus Christ, is both human and divine. So, while the Church is divinely fueled, guided by the Holy Spirit, and perfect in her teachings, it is still composed of humans who are imperfect. Sin exists in the pews just as much as it does in the sacristies and even when people in leadership sin, that does not render God’s laws or God’s truths any less valid or truthful.
      Christ knew (Simon) Peter was not perfect, yet He still chose him for an all-important task of guiding the Church on earth:
      “And so, I say to you (Simon), you are Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:18-19).

    Growing up, I was emotionally and narcissistically abused by most of my public school peers, especially two girls related to me through marriage. This often included them rubbing my failures in my face, loudly telling me to pull myself together, and when I had the courage to stand up to them, they found a way to turn the blame around to make me believe that it was my own fault instead of theirs.
    I've cut ties with them now, but sixteen years of that poisoned my ability to take criticism, be gentle with myself, and yes, confessing my sins.
    I have no doubt that God will forgive me, but confessing my failures to a priest always opens the door for the same thing to happen all over again: a human being misunderstanding me and telling me to do something that terrifies or destroys me. Thank God I have better people, including Father Mike's videos, to help me heal from this delusion.

    Thx again father Mike,this really clarified confession,my recent confessions have been amazingly healing experiences & the videos really helped me to get it right,I left feeling ten feet tall while at the same time I felt like a new born baby,I cried heavily while walking out of the confessional,they were tears of joy&tears for the love of Jesus Christ my lord&savior.There was a line of people who were waiting to confess & I just wanted to get back in line & do it again,that's how amazing I felt,I was so happy&now I look forward to going to confession each & every time.I have had a miracle in my life since&God answers my prayers ,it really overjoyed me when you said I was answering his will ,cause that's exactly how it feels,the desire to pray or visit church on a weekday,or read scripture ,or be in silent reflection enough to hear his will instead of mine is all happening to me right now ,right here & you've been a big part in bringing me closer & in more understanding with my Catholic Faith,I'm so grateful to you father Mike.I wish I could tell you all about my healing mass,What I will tell you is I was healed by Jesus &was changed by the Holy Spirit🕊God Bless you&keep you well always✝️God is love ❤️ Amen,Amen🙏🏼

      You do it because you sadly follow much the same as the Old Testament Jews did .They refuse God and wanted priest as mediators . Hello there are no priest in the New Testament like the catholic church has which is much the copy of Judaism .Jesus because the high priest and no priest to mediator are required .the individual goes to Jesus no one else . Stop listening to this priest or any one .My Lord God look at the latest news of what priest are doing to children . Run from the lie .You get on your knee and pray to Jesus no one else .As him to remove your sins Ask Jesus to come into your life . Stop being so gullible and fools .

      @LegendaryZ
      I would just like to point out some things. First, I would like you to know that Catholics are neither gullible neither fools. The Catholic Church is the original, and the one that Jesus founded. He makes this clear in the Bible, and he said that "the gates of the netherorld will not prevail agianst his Church. In fact, the netherworld's gates haven't prevailed against it. What you say about the Catholic Church you are saying to Jesus, because the Church (not churches) is his "spotless bride." Also, just because some priests have failed in their duties, the mast majority have not.
      I would like to hear your feed back,
      becuase I feel your Old Testament theory is not very clear. Thank you for sharing your opinion. Jesus loves you. Peace.

      What stars really look like Catholics are not Antichrists let’s see who are the Antichrists in 1John 2, 18-19
      18
      Children, it is the last hour;* and just as you heard that the antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. Thus we know this is the last hour.nnumber
      19
      THEY WENT OUT FROM US, but they were not really of our number;* if they had been, they would have remained with us. Their desertion shows that none of them was of our number.

    • @user-ew8tf3qp3o
      @user-ew8tf3qp3o 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What stars really look like read (John 20, 21-23) (2 Corinthians 5, 18-20) The first Christians confessed (James 5, 16) (acts 19, 18)
      Priests, being men like us, can understand us and help us to advance in the way of our own sanctification. (Hebrews 5 1-2)
      On the other hand, the idea of confessing directly with God is not biblical. In the Old Testament it is said that the confession of sins is made in the presence of a priest, in a cultic and liturgical context (Lv 5, 1-13, Nm 5, 5-10).
      He who in any of these ways has become guilty, will confess his guilt and present to the Lord, as a reparation for the sin committed, a female of the flock, sheep or goat, in sacrifice of expiation. The priest will thus make you atone for your sin, and you will be forgiven. (Lv 5, 5-6)
