  • If you’ve ever been in a conversation where you had to defend the Catholic Faith, people have probably asked you this question. It can be a tough one to answer, but Fr. Mike lays out many reasons why confessing our sins to a priest makes perfect sense. Confession isn’t a man-made tradition of the Church but rather a valuable gift given by God and rooted in Scripture.
Fr. Mike is also a presenter in these faith formation programs from Ascension:

      Carlos Rodriguez,
PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY AS IF YOUR ETERNAL “LIFE” DEPENDED ON IT
In the Book of Hebrews Chapter 10 in context the author was talking to “baptized” Christians (Hebrews 10:22) telling them to not be “neglecting to meet together” in “the Church” - being the ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH. Why “the Church”???
***Hebrews **10:26**-29 “For IF WE SIN DELIBERATELY after receiving knowledge of the truth, THERE NO LONGER REMAINS A SACRIFICE FOR SINS, BUT A FEARFUL PROSPECT OF JUDGMENT, AND A FURY OF FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES………..HOW MUCH MORE PUNISHMENT DO YOU THINK WILL BE DESERVED BY THE MAN WHO HAS SPURNED THE SON OF GOD, AND PROFANED THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT BY WHICH HE HAS SANCTIFIED, AND OUTRAGED THE SPIRIT OF GRACE”.***
What does Sacred Scriptures clearly say “IF WE SIN DELIBERATELY” or willfully break any of the commandments whether the old (10 Commandments) or NEW (Laws of LOVE or refusing to LOVE as Christ commands per John 13:34)??? If “THERE NO LONGER REMAINS A SACRIFICE FOR SINS, BUT A FEARFUL PROSPECT OF JUDGMENT”, then how does one obtain reconciliation with GOD again???
We must examine the old covenant to fully understand the NEW COVENANT. In Leviticus 5:5-6 and Numbers 5:5-9 we can understand what an old covenant Jew had to do to receive GOD's forgiveness. Additionally, GOD in the Books of Leviticus and Numbers any time personal “sin” is mentioned you will read over and over again “THUS THE PRIEST SHALL MAKE ATONEMENT FOR A MAN’S SINS AND IT WILL BE FORGIVEN” (Lev 4:20, 4:26, 4:31,4:35, 5:6, 5:10, 5:13, 5:16, 5:18, 6:7, 7:7, 12:8, 14:18, 14:19, 14:20, 14:29, 14:31, 15:15, 15:30, 16:32, 16:33, 19:22 Num. 6:11,15:25, and 15:28). In the old covenant, GOD uses ordained “men”, the Leviticus Priesthood, to administer His forgiveness.
Now, does GOD keep His WORD and covenant promises??? GOD promises to have a perpetual priesthood per His covenant in Numbers 25:12-13 and Malachi 2:4-7 and has WORDS of “forever” in Exodus 29:7-9, 40:15, and 1 Chronicles 23:13. Then, GOD promises to have a perpetual priesthood in Jeremiah 33:14-22 NEW COVENANT PROPHECY. Additionally, in context of “gathering the nations” in Isaiah 66:18 GOD states in Isaiah 66:21 “some of them also I will take for priests” meaning no longer based on Levi tribal lineage in the NEW COVENANT. In John Chapter 13, we see Jesus Christ fulfilling His Father’s Levi Covenant promise and Malachi 3:3 prophecy, when He sits down in the upper room “purifying” the NEW COVENANT PRIESTHOOD with a “washing”. This “washing” was a “forever” priestly liturgical GOD command in Exodus 30:21 in order to perform any altar work or sacrifice.
What “same” power does the Son of GOD give to His ONE and ONLY established Church or “the Church” per Matthew 16:19, 18:18 and specifically explained to the NEW COVENANT PRIESTHOOD by Jesus in John 20:21-23??? In 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 St. Paul describes what Jesus Christ did was He “GAVE US THE MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION” and concluded “SO WE ARE AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST”. An “ambassador” wields what kind of power as an “official representative” of Christ or more specifically explained in “the Church” as “persona Christi”???
Please come to your real home and be “reconciled” to “the Church” HIS ONE BODY (Ephesians 4:4-6). What did Jesus Christ create, pray for in John 17:21-23 and die for??? If you really LOVE Jesus Christ, then you will respond to His prayer and join the “ONENESS” that He created. The “Lamb of GOD” wants to unite with you in the NEW COVENANT PASSOVER (Luke 22:19) in His ONE and ONLY established Church, so we all can be “perfectly ONE”. May GOD richly bless you on your journey.

Greg Aitchison Certain aspects of the Catholic Church rub me the wrong way. For instance, I understand the rationale behind the papacy being given to Peter (Fr. Mike made a great video, if I'm not mistaken), but I think the idea itself is a misinterpretation of text taken beyond its intention. And it actually goes against most biblical teachings being against a centralized theological authority other than God. The theocratic state of Israelites wanted a king and God told them it was a bad idea and they got Saul. A third of Thomas Paine's Common Sense is dedicated to this idea that God disliked placing figures of authority in a position that might seem to replace Him. And for much of Catholic history, the Pope has acted much more as a king than as a prophet or priest.
I have other issues like the patron saints replacing the patron Roman gods, but all in all, I think Catholics are Christians just as much as I am. We just disagree on the specifics. And I often respect their dedication and unity more than that of most protestants.
Who knows, maybe someday I'll be convinced.

@@dallasbrat81 he never directly mentions the term “confession” or “reconciliation” but he does say “confess your sins to one another” (James 5:16) and at another point he says “whoever’s sins you forgive will be forgiven, and whoever’s sins you do not forgive will not be forgiven” (John 20:23) to his disciples, as well as “if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9) as well as proverbs 28:13- “he who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.” That’s exactly what we do in confession. Does Jesus not urge us if we have a grievance against someone to go to them and obtain forgiveness? If you have an issue with someone, if you’re truly sorry for the pain you caused them, that is legitimate, but is it not better to go to the person, to confess your sin against them, and to make it right, face to face? That’s what we do in confession. What is sin if not the greatest grievance against God himself? If you could know for certain that you could go and have a clean slate, would you not do it? Is it not humbling to confess your sins out loud, and powerful to reject them with your own tongue? Sure, God can forgive our sins without the help of a priest, but we are physical people, so God uses visible things to help us understand invisible graces that we receive from things we cannot comprehend in our feeble minded humanity. Not only that, but I have found that confession is incredibly good for my conscience, as confession is incredibly difficult and I don’t like doing it, so I often will rethink my actions before doing something rash.

Hi Fr. Mike! Thank you for this. As an addition, I remember Fr. Thiefels (the priest who heard my 1st Confession some 45 years ago) telling us that God knew we were physical creatures and so he used physical acts to dispense His divine grace. In other words, all of the sacraments have a physical component to them because we can relate to physical things. So the act of "saying" our sins is God's way of playing to our strength ... He's leveraging our physical nature, in a sense.

Also, Father Mike I JUST heard the other day on Catholic Answers talk about this. Confession GOES all the way back to Genesis. When God went to Adam and Eve after they sinned, what did they do? They HID from God. If they would have CONFESSED that sin to God right then and there, things would have been a lot different!!! So the Biblical roots for confession are right there in the beginning.

    • @MikeyJProductions
      @MikeyJProductions 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Mike Cranston Even IF that is true, my point still stands. It's a clear reference to confession right in Genesis.

    • @MikeyJProductions
      @MikeyJProductions 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Mike Cranston Who told you Adam and Eve and especially Noah didn't exist? Do you not realize their genealogy is chronicled in Genesis? Noah I find specifically troubling. If you want to question the full magnitude of the flood or the Ark, ok. But Noah's grandfather Enoch wrote the Book of Enoch, which was part of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Jesus himself even quoted from the Book of Enoch. This book arguably predates Genesis (since Genesis is attributed to Moses, mostly).
How did you come to these misunderstandings?

Growing up, I was emotionally and narcissistically abused by most of my public school peers, especially two girls related to me through marriage. This often included them rubbing my failures in my face, loudly telling me to pull myself together, and when I had the courage to stand up to them, they found a way to turn the blame around to make me believe that it was my own fault instead of theirs.
I've cut ties with them now, but sixteen years of that poisoned my ability to take criticism, be gentle with myself, and yes, confessing my sins.
I have no doubt that God will forgive me, but confessing my failures to a priest always opens the door for the same thing to happen all over again: a human being misunderstanding me and telling me to do something that terrifies or destroys me. Thank God I have better people, including Father Mike's videos, to help me heal from this delusion.

      roger,
PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY AS IF YOUR ETERNAL “LIFE” DEPENDED ON IT
In the Book of Hebrews Chapter 10 in context the author was talking to “baptized” Christians (Hebrews 10:22) telling them to not be “neglecting to meet together” in “the Church” - being the ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH.

Thx for this Fr Mike. I needed it.
Today, I had a little misunderstanding w my co worker when this topic came about. I just learned today he’s a self taught bible person. Never had gone to church & perhaps not even baptized as a Christian but seems to be very interested in the words of God written in the Bible.
He quoted me verses that refute my own understanding of how & why we go to a priest for confession etc. Also mentioned a verse in the book of Hebrews relating to the torn vestments, something like that.
Truth be told, Im not fully Bible oriented, but do know some verses or passages, enough to stand my ground as a Catholic. I try not to argue in the negative sense of the word, but it seems to always go that route.
My coworkers though he’s aiming to learn on his own, doesn’t want to participate w any Christian organization. So kinda hard to have one see the Goodness & Mercy of God, when the focus is all about or relating to God’s Wrath. He however doesn’t agree with Christians divided, which I appreciate Fr Mike mentioning here that confession removes that division.
Cant really say much anymore to explain not defend but was already shunned & the discussion was dropped. I apologized made peace & agreed to disagree. Then left it at that. And on top of that, Im not really at the moment in a good place spiritually. So in short, had no ammo - kinda feel crappy now coz I feel I blew it w/God.
Saught ur sight immediately Fr Mike to get an explanation on this topic - glad u had one - ty.
Any advice on this matter, would really appreciate it. Thx again!

@stapme Ehh I just don't buy that as an excuse to leave the Church. It’s not like Jesus didn’t know that people were going to sin; He knows all - He’s God. The Church, like Jesus Christ, is both human and divine. So, while the Church is divinely fueled, guided by the Holy Spirit, and perfect in her teachings, it is still composed of humans who are imperfect. Sin exists in the pews just as much as it does in the sacristies and even when people in leadership sin, that does not render God’s laws or God’s truths any less valid or truthful.
Christ knew (Simon) Peter was not perfect, yet He still chose him for an all-important task of guiding the Church on earth:
“And so, I say to you (Simon), you are Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:18-19).

Priests have the legitimate power to forgive sins but sadly a lot of people don't agree, especially protestants, because they will argue anything against the Catholic Church because they simply despise the Catholic Church.

Corek BleedingHollow It is because they are so fearfull of the truth that they lie to themselves to feel better. And better yet, is how hollow and ephemeral their rebuttals are. Just stay strong in the faith and like they say, if you ignore them long enough they will go away, God Bless you Brother.

Corek BleedingHollow how can someone forgive your sins who are a sinner themselves? Confessing and forgiving sins are 2 different things Jesus died for our sins on the cross! If a priest or the pope can forgive sins that means Jesus dying on the cross was unnecessary! WAKE up!

TheDay Cometh Attention FATHER MIKE!! Fr. doesn't it say somewhere in the Bible to not call anyone a fool? I'd like to tell u how angry I'm getting right now bkz of this... (ok telling myself NOT to cuss as this is a Catholic forum lol) this "so & so" calling every Catholic a FOOL which includes me! GRRR! Vengeance is mine thus says the Lord...I will repay. Ok. Let's breathe for a moment...intentionally & deliberately said, "I'm going to join the Catholic church because it's definetely a cult & I want to worship some pagan God & pray & worship some statues today!" NOT!!!
*sighs* I don't know how to answer these questions but I know this...these trolls that are causing me at best to feel very uneasy...there are many other channels on utube they can go harass!!! Last comment to these trolls...not going to get my stomach all knotted up because they need their daily dose of harrassing Catholics today. And for the record I have NEVER WORSHIPPED ANYONE except my Lord Jesus Christ! TY for listening Fr. Mike! 💜 God bless y'all.

I am currently researching the catholic church. I grew up in church of christ. This is such an aha moment listening to this. I always thought that church should be like an aa meeting not a place you can leave sin. It's a great thing to go directly to God, but I can see the benefit of going to a priest to help with this because you are releasing that sin to God and not being judged for it. That's a powerful thing and it is receiving a gift. Thanks for sharing your video's. Can you do a video of what to expect going to a catholic church for the first time? Thank you

Hi JC Dova, Jesus never said we are called to go to the priest, we go directly to Him to have our sins forgiven. No priest can forgive sins since he can't read your mind. The Catholic church requires that you be contrite and have a firm purpose of amendment, and only God knows whether you do or you don't.

Being forced to go to confession as a child was horrible. I did not want to be confessing “sins” (I couldn’t even fully comprehend what that meant as a child) to an older male stranger. My hands used to get sweaty, my heart raced, and I felt like I wanted to jump out of my own skin. With the exception of comprehending how sin works, the rest stayed the same going into adulthood. I was always told it was my guilt for sinning. I know better now that I wasn’t allowed to listen to what my body was saying. Body boundaries were violated every single time by adults coercing me (with fear of gods wrath) into going into room alone with an older man (no I was never touched. My point still stands).
I’m an adult now and can assert my own boundaries AND maintain a connection to God.

[Matt. 23:9 ESV] 9 And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.
We base our faith, not on any other book except the Bible. If one were only to have the Bible, what would confession of sin look like?
Please: please...Give me one passage in the New Testament where a sinner is to CONFESS TO A PRIEST. We are no longer under the Old Testament, the Old Covenant. We have a BETTER COVENANT and BETTER PROMISES, says the Bible
[Heb 8:6 NASB] 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.
We do not ever confess to a priest, because the Bible says: Hebrews 7:23-24, “The FORMER PRIESTS were many in number, because they were PREVENTED BY DEATH FROMM CONTINUING IN OFFICE, but HE holds his PRIESTHOOD PERMANENTLY, because HE CONTINUES FOREVER.”
THIS PASSAGE IS CLEAR; IT LEAVES NOTHING TO PERSONAL INTERPRETATION -- WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO SEE AND TEACH THIS????
[1Timothy 2:5 NASB] 5 For there is one God, [and] one mediator also between God and men, [the] man Christ Jesus,
the Bible THEN INSTRUCTS YOU WHAT JESUS MEDIATES:
[Heb 8:6 NASB] 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.
[Heb 9:15 NASB] 15 For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were [committed] under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
[Heb 12:24 NASB] 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than [the blood] of Abel.
Please give ONE PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE where in the New Testament, under the New Covenant since the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ where any author of the New Testament books had given instruction to confess to a priest. GIVE ME JUST ONE!!!!
PLEASE DO NOT JUST TALK AND GIVE OPINIONS -- GIVE SCRIPTURE. QUOTE SCRIPTURE.
[John 6:44, 65 ESV] 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. ... 65 And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father."
[1Timothy 2:5 ESV] 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
[James 5:16 NASB] 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
[1John 1:9 NASB] 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
the Bible has much to say about anyone who attempts to follow Christ and attempting to keep the Law of the Old Testament. Paul says a person is cursed, anathema if that individual brings in ANYTHING of the old practices of the Old Testament to the New Practice of faith bought for us by God's Son, Jesus Christ. Some things Paul says in the book of Galatians alone, but his writings are infused with such sentiments which he states he received as DIRECT REVELATION FROM JESUS CHRIST, PERSONALLY (Gal. 1:2):
The priesthood instituted under the Law of Moses, described in detail in Exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy, is not done away with (Hebrews 7). Under Jesus Christ, there is now the priesthood of all believers (Please read 1 Peter 2:5,9). So. Why do you distinguish yourself as and individual that other individuals must come to a confess, since the Bible forbids it???
Paul states directly and forcefully in the book of Galatians, teaching ANYONE ABOUT KEEPING THE Old Testament LAW, YOU ARE DOING THIS:
-- you make children of a bondwoman (4:31)
-- you have put on a yoke of slavery (5:1)
-- you rebuild what Paul says he worked so hard to destroy (2:18)
-- you have nullified the promises of God (3:17)
-- you are kept under tutors (3:25)
-- you are kept in custody (3:23)
-- you are under guardians and managers (4:2)
And Paul has so much more to say... READ THE BOOK OF GALATIANS ENTIRELY TO GET WHAT IS COMMANDED AND REQUIRED OF US.
    Paul says this about Himself:
[Gal 1:15-16 NASB] 15 But when God, who had set me apart [even] from my mother's womb and called me through His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood,
Paul did not consult with flesh and blood, should you not do the same.
    READ YOU BIBLES FOR YOURSELVES!
Don't shot the messenger; I have simply quoted the Bible -- contend with that.
    Respectfully

Be Clear Paul says those things about attaining salvation through works but he also says in Romans 7:7 “What should we say then? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet, if t had not been for the law, I would not know sin.”
1 Corinthians 5:5 also says we are to excommunicate people from the church who sin and do not repent.
Christ gives the apostles the gift of forgiving sin through the Holy Spirit in John 20:23. Obviously he tells his apostles to forgive sin with the expectation that people will come to them to have their sins forgiven just as Christ did to the paralytic Luke 5:20 or the sinful woman in Luke 7:48. The apostolic church continues the work of Christ through his Holy Spirit. It’s no different than the rest of the gifts of the spirit.

Wow, as a cradle Catholic I get asked all the time why I have to confess my sins to a priest. Recently, I read something that stated Confession is a “tradition” of the Catholic Church and this tradition has been kept over the years. I found out today the real reason, which I understand now. I love the analogy you made about baptism. You made a lot of sense when you said we don’t baptize ourselves. God gave his apostles the authority to baptize, forgive sins, marry couples, etc. Thank you, Father Mike, for explaining this so well!

John 20:23 is NOT for men announcing Christians of forgiveness of sins. Jesus Christ gave that command to His apostles to proclaim the Gospel (just like the other 3 Gospel writers accounts of Christ giving apostles the great commission) which includes people hearing and believing, repenting and being baptized for forgiveness of past sins. That's what that passage means. Not the ridiculous catholic denomination's dogma invented by men. Auricular confession came from the Irish during 7th century. Catholic catechism even states this fact.
Easy proof of this fact is Acts 8:18-24. Peter COMMANDED Simon to repent and petition God for Simon's own forgiveness. Peter failed to command Simon to confess the mortal sin to Peter himself, nor to some other apostle or whatever else in order to be forgiven.
So Peter either taught error as the first pope of this imaginary catholic church during the 1st century, or apostle Peter simply never was catholic and taught truth, thats is, all Christians pray to God for their own sins just like the REAL true Church has been practicing since day 1.

There are several problems with this interpretation. (1) John 20:23 nowhere mentions confession of sin. (2) John 20:23 nowhere promises or even hints that apostolic authority of any kind would be passed on to the successors of the apostles. (3) The apostles never once in the New Testament acted as if they had the authority to forgive a person’s sin. Similarly, Catholics point to Matthew 16:19 and 18:18 (binding and loosing) as evidence for the Catholic Church’s authority to forgive sins. The same three above points apply equally to these Scriptures.
The ability to forgive sins is God’s and His alone (Isaiah 43:25). The better understanding of John 20:23 is that the apostles were given the responsibility of declaring with utmost certainty the terms on which God would forgive sins. As the church was being founded, the apostles declared that those who believed the gospel were forgiven (Acts 16:31) and those who did not obey the gospel faced judgment (2 Thessalonians 1:8; 1 Peter 4:17). As the apostles proclaimed salvation in Christ (Acts 10:43) and exercised church discipline (1 Corinthians 5:4-5), they were wielding the authority Christ had given them.

Millennial... Don't quite understand., Why do Catholic say the bible was written by them? If so then why do they also a another bible that they refer to as a "Catholic Bible"? Why do you need two? And we are to follow Jesus as an example yet I don't recall Jesus ever telling people that they need to confess to a priest..? And one other thing I don't understand is why do Catholics call someone " father"?
I believe there's a scripture in the bible (that you say Catholics wrote) that says we aren't to call anyone father.. except our heavenly father.

Vlađ Knight I guess you were t paying attention. Confession is the most beautiful sacrament of the Catholic Church. Once you leave confession you feel like a weight is Off Your Shoulder. Yes you can confess to Jesus directly and we do however think of it as going to a therapist who understands what you've been through and you're made more accountable. Its humbling

If you also believe that Jesus is omni present..
why do you go to priest when Jesus is just around You?
      Its unbiblical.. where is Faith?
I do agree that we should confess each others sins(but its not limited to priest alone)
eg. if you hurt someone its better to ask forgiveness to that person rather than to priest. Priest has no role to play here.
For Jesus will do the right judgement and He alone will Forgive.
Priest/Pope should remain like tool or instrument for God and not Contradict with Gods will.

@@dchazfan You cannot confess directly to Jesus. When you are praying, you are examining your conscious. You are asking the Holy Spirit to let you know what sins you need to confess. And than you go to the priest to confess your sins. It's not therapy. If the priest does not absolve you of your sins, you are not forgiven.
