So, the part you called "stupid" at the beginning of the cut was thrilling when this came out in 1982 when we were kids. There was no TH-cam, or the like, to hear or see these guys speak. Just the idea that they ventured into a blues riff BLEW US AWAY! Now that they're finally on the map to stay, it seems a bit nonchalant to hear Geddy do or say something off the beaten path. So, back in the day when you weren't even a thought, it was significant to the true RUSH fan.
You nailed it for sure. It was excitement to hear something like that back in the day. Well said. I even thought the "one two buckle my shoe" bit on In The End was cool back then.
The effortlessness in which they weave time signatures still stuns me. The flow is not necessarily unmatched, unrivaled, or unattainable. Just undeniable!
Alex’s playing through this is spectacular. The effects with his pedals and phaser really add to this. And he does some awesome palm muting during the finale to this number
This along with Xanadu are the two standouts on this album. This will always be my favorite version of Jacobs Ladder. Such a cool song. BTW - Geddys intro is: "We'd like to do an old song for you right now. It was done a long time ago by T.C. Broonsie, this is called Jacob's Ladder..." This is a comical reference to their producer Terry Brown. His nickname is Broon. The song Broon’s Bane is a tribute to him.
I have been playing drums for most of my life and the drum part starting at 7:15 is one of the hardest parts I've ever tried to play. It's a timing thing and next to impossible to play with any kind of flow.
Amazing on the album, amazing live, by 3 amazing composers. I do love this song so much and again Alex and his bloomin pinch harmonics and lots of chorus/flange effect.
The most amazing thing to me about Alex's solo work is that they were almost all pretty much improvised. He'd get an idea in his head about how a solo should go, would play it a couple of times to get tweaks, and that was it. He felt the solo quality went down if he messed with it too much from his original take. He said the irony is that he'd create a solo on the fly, but then he'd end up having to learn it and play it that way for the rest of his life. (this is paraphrased from an interview I read a long time ago, and if there's interest I'll see if I can find it) Enjoying this Rush ride with you! Thanks for sharing, again!
I appreciate that he actually learned it though. I remember reading an interview where he talked about that--because he didn't like going to see someone live and then having them just improvise some mediocre solo after laying down an awesome solo on the album. When you went to see Rush live, you knew you weren't going to get some clusterf* improvised mess when it came time for the guitar solo, and I always liked that.
I know that there are quite a few drummers out there who can do awesome things in odd time signatures, but how many could ever make a groove in an odd time signature "rock" as hard as Neil Peart?

What a great track Justin. I believe the version on their final R40 live tour is better from a audio/visual point of view. To see these 3 guys absolutely smashing it in their early 60's is amazing. They played it better than ever, the bands own words!
On their R40 tour, they played Jacob's Ladder and towards the beginning of the tour, Geddy said they were going to play something they never played live before and they started playing the song. People were telling him later "Dude, you guys played this before! It's freaking on your live album!". Geddy said he was flummoxed and totally blanked out on that and forgot. LOL. This is still one of my favs from them. It's such a great composition, and all three really blend together well on it.
Alex never gets any love... c'mon is he the best guitarist or what... underrated and undervalued. BTW how many dam signature changes are there in this masterpiece ;-)
Fun side note. There was a poll done towards the end of the Rush: of the songs they haven’t played in years, which one do you wanna the most. Jacob’s Ladder won in a sorta landslide. Them being the good guys they are, played in every show on the last tour, the R40.

I'm back to leave a comment on another great Rush track. Since your full album reactions of Permanent Waves, you've been consistent in your comments about Natural Science and Jacob's Ladder. But I'd like to make a recommendation. On the R-40 concert DVD, you can see both songs performed back to back along with The Spirit of Radio. And according to the band in later interviews said, "It was one of those magical nights where everybody was in sync. We were clicking on all eight cylinders." Just a thought. 😎☮️
Again, songs like this speak to their attention to detail, and ability to perform with such precision! How in the world can they keep all this stuff memorized?! Down to the most minute little bell chime. And, if you watch them, they make it seem so effortless! Sometimes Alex and Geddy joke with each other on stage WHILE THEY'RE PLAYING!! They're clearly of satan! Lol!
Justin - here's a bit of fun facts (from Wiki) on the album cover front/back that we all see: An item from each of Rush's previous eight studio album covers can be seen on the front and back cover of this live album, though each has been modified in some way. The snowy owl from Fly by Night flies above Apollo, the man in the suit from Hemispheres, who stands next to Paula Turnbull, the woman from Permanent Waves. The puppet king from A Farewell to Kings sits atop a box stenciled with the band logo from Rush. Next to him is a painting of the Caress of Steel album cover, held by one of the movers from Moving Pictures, with another mover standing behind. Next to this is Dionysus, the nude man from Hemispheres. Behind this scene, the starman from 2112 hangs in the background, next to an "EXIT" sign.
I REALLY prefer this version to the studio version. Funny note - this past summer, I went out and storm chased for two weeks out in South Dakota, Montana, etc. totally forgot about this song while watching a storm come up on me 😕

As much as I love 'Moving Pictures,' the previous year's banger, 'Permanent Waves' is slightly better. Rush had 5 awesome records in a row beginning with AFTK and ending with Terry Brown's final album, 'Signals,' which I'm certain you'll love! ✌🐈😊
i'm going through their discography from start to finish soooo i'm doing albums. Before I started doing this I did many live performances of Rush and yes, the ones that got blocked for me were specifically from Exit Stage Left. IDK why, some are still up some got blocked.

This is the song I remember the most when I saw them on the Permanent Waves tour. The song was hypnotizing!

Rush is one of the few bands where the live tracks often outshine the studio tracks. Amazing power and precision.

I’ve been trying to air drum to the part after the synth break in the middle, and the result has always been the same: “whatever, Neil.”

The live version of Jacob's Ladder sounds more like ELP than the studio version, which is a good thing.
