@@ibras1428 Yeah, 46 here. I was 8 years old, turning 9 later that year when I saw GB 1 in the summer of 1984. I remember in 1984 the atmosphere was electric, it was really a movie made for adults but accessible for us children. I remember when "Ghostbusters" was one singular blockbuster movie and not a franchise, because even the people that can't remember 1984 but remember the 1989 GB 2 sequel, still remember it as a franchise of cartoons and toys. From my memory, there were a few bags, t-shirts and stickers in 1984, I used one to trick or treat that Halloween, but we had no toys until the fall of 1986 when the cartoon came out. The toy slime was particularly popular at school.

He flew toward the screen at the end of the first movie and had a couple scenes with Louis in the second one. I guess he could've been caught again off-screen, who knows?. But, besides that, Slimer was more of a supporting character and more for comedic effect rather than the more intimidating main villain like Gozer or Vigo, so I can't see them building that up for it to just be Slimer, with all due respect.

I really liked it despite the near constant references. The movie is very nostalgia heavy for sure. It reminded me a LOT of The Force Awakens. I think they did the same approach in order to do something new while connecting back to its roots for the sake of the original fans. Now that they have the set up out of the way I'm hoping we get a sequel that stands firmly on it's own.

Finally a positive review of this film. It's been kind of heartbreaking to see so many critics turn on this film either because of the debacle with the 2016 film or simply because they're exhausted from 80s nostalgia. When it comes to reviving and paying homage to an old franchise I think this is about as sincere as you can get. It's such a sweet movie and it's a shame it seems to be judged on the basis of what it's not, rather than what it actually is.

I was impressed by the extra scenes in the "credits" ;) I admired they gave a good back story update to Winston and a possible launching point for another gb movie. and the scene with Dana and Peter with the tables turned on Peter. lol that was real good. ;)

If the kids were young adults I think this movie would have been great. There were plot holes- like how did the OG Ghostbusters have their own proton packs when Egon took away all the isotopes with him and the proton packs used to contain the ghosts were destroyed by the keymaker (or the other doggo).
Also, destroying one nuclear accelerator with another would cause a nuclear catastrophe, no?

The original film is just a comedy where they run a business about ghost exterminators. All of the “seriousness” surrounding Gozer the god is laughed off nicely by Bill Murray’s dry wit and he doesn’t give a shit what’s going on. The idea is ridiculous and the film is self aware of that. This film is all schmaltz and played completely straight with no satire. It misses the point of ghostbusters. The title is a joke. The whole thing is a joke intentionally. Not an action film indie drama like Afterlife. But I at least appreciate it more than the 2016 abomination which has no attention to concise comedic timing or the chemistry of the cast. Ghostbusters 3 needed to stay consistent with the satirical nature of the first two where it poked fun at itself.

Little tweaks like that and a longer ending of the originals interaction and family.

He’ll often let a grudge hold over parts of the show. In this case, his disagreement with the poor reception of Ghostbusters (2016). He’s also done it with Clint Eastwood, or when he goes all quiet and cold like a moody teenager if Mayo even flippantly mentions the PM.
Mark Kermode is a good film critic, and I often agree with him, but I can’t really stand him as a person. He perfectly exemplifies that out of touch, upper middle class empathy bullshit that rots the BBC to the core.

I’ve nothing against the 2016 film being a different story, or having all female GB, but it was just a genuinely terrible movie! Kermode only liked it because it was politically correct to like it...not on whether it was good as a movie or not. Which makes his critical assessment of it flawed. He’s one of those critics who acts like some cultural gatekeeper, and we fans are obviously just idiots.

While it was far better than the 2016 film, which isn't saying much, it's not really a great film. I have to agree with Mike,Jay and Rich from Redlettermedia. It felt like a collection of-do you remember the fire pole? Do you remember the Proton Pack? Remember Zool? Remember slime? Remember Walmart? Remember Baskin Robbins? Remember when films were more original? I do. This really has the same stink that The Force Awakens had on it. Nostalgia really is the new drug.

Equal parts Ghostbusters with a mix of Goonies (as noted towards the end of the review). Fun movie. I was smiling and laughing through the whole thing. The young girl, Phoebe, stole the show. Very adorkable. Same for Podcast. The two really played off each other.

I saw it and originally gave it a 8 - 8.5 out of 10 but after seeing Redletter Media's review I've lowered it to a 7 -7.5 out of 10. It's still worth seeing in the theater for its pure entertainment value but the script needed more work. It relies heavily on nostalgia and references to the previous movies and doesn't give us enough that's new and previously unseen or unexpected.
Still, it's a decent start to additional sequels should they be made and they probably will.

I really love Afterlife, I already lost count on the many times I re-watched the movie.
My biggest complaint is the marshmallow scene at the mall, the scene didn't fits with the rest of the movie and there is no reason to appear in that moment and there is no reason to that behavior other than fanservice, (and is a perfect example of bad fanservice) but I really enjoy the marshmallow sabotaging Trevor and Potcast gear in the Ecto-1 and how Potcast gets bathed in marshmallow in reference to the first Ghozer encounter in the original movie.

A decent attempt at a third movie, not perfect by any means though. My major criticism of the film was a little over reliance on nostalgia. I really wish they had chosen to explore a new villain, preferably picked from the Real Ghostbusters TV series (I personally would've loved to have seen Samhain, the demon god of Halloween).

I couldn’t disagree with you more. This film is the perfect example of how cinema and movies in general are sliding drastically.
The only thing the film does well is create nostalgia from the original movies. The script is lazy, the dialogue is clunky and the performances are so flat, with the only exception being Phoebe and podcast, who were the only saving grace - no pun intended. Even Paul Rudd, who I’m normally a fan of, is week in this.
It has none of the charm and wit of the original 2.

lol I know this is probably a really meaningless nitpick but the Ghostbuster TV spot at 3:58 cracks me up. It looks in HD and I have yet to see a TV commercial from the 80s that wasn't played during the Super Bowl that actually looked good. They're usually a 25 generation copy off a SLP VHS tape that looked like it was eaten by a VCR and sound like you're hearing it in a fishbowl. Just think it would have added some authenticity to that part.

Good review!! Saw this movie today and thought that it was good enough. Thought that the Phoebe & Podcast characters stole every scene they were in for they were way more interesting than the other characters. Literally fell asleep in a few spots for the movie did kind of drag on/get boring a bit, but I had driven cross-country for 14 hours the day before and was tired (at least that is the excuse I will use). Some plot-holes and other questions, but they did not detract from getting absorbed into the movie and enjoying it. May see again when not as tired as I was today.

I've seen several reviews now by people who I respect their views (including Oliver) and they're quite polarised with some saying the call backs are overdone and in some cases are a real detriment to the film and the third act is mishandled. Others have liked it and the nostalgia but most fall somewhere in-between. I wonder where I'll fall, probably more towards the former as when I watched the trailers I became more and more sure it was heading to much in the way of relying on fan service and doing a soft reboot of the original.

The film has some great ideas but it's overstuffed with unnecessary additions which cause it to drag in places and have a runtime which is probably 20 minutes too long. Cut out Lucky, Trevor, the diner scenes, the scene in the rented apartment, Janine's cameo, the Aztec death whistle, Phoebe's jokes, the mini stay puft men and you have a better movie.
