Most of the product goes on the lips. You're just getting rid of the contaminated excess. Like the other comment said, it's better this than wasting the whole tube by mixing it accidentally
I recommend K-Brand Roma&nd clear lip gloss! The applicator is easy to use and clean. If you haven't used a Korean lip products you should cause they're wayyyy ahead of the game

I never clean the applicator after putting gloss over lipstick because it’s never enough to change the color of the gloss. If the color actually changes you have too much product on.
For those saying "just don't put gloss over lipstick" you can use matte lipstick instead which most of the time doesn't transfer and you can put clear gloss on top
Tip! Just press it against your hand until its clean and you can use the extra gloss! Its normal if it stains the wand lol my wand is literally stained red but my gloss is still crystal clear✨✨

That's why I love rom&nd water glasting lip glosses. The applicator is of silicon material and so it doesn't pick up lipstick from the lips.

i usually just put it on my finger and using it from my finger so any color doesn’t transfer to the tub. but ofc with a clean finger

Ultimately not a problem if you only wear one lipstick, even if you're using it without the lipstick the most it's gonna do is leave a rosy tint.
Just do a swipe of the clear gloss on the back of your hand and apply with your finger tips. Keeps it clean.

Put lipgloss on upper lip, bottom lip a little bit of lipstick and top to rub lips together and mix a light red gloss
