The Philadelphia Phillies are carrying the MLB. This isn’t anything new. Last year, the Phillies got back to the World Series with the World Series averaging over 12M viewers on Fox becoming the most-streamed World Series in Fox Sports history, but there are actually many reasons for why the Phillies and more importantly their fans are creating scenes like this and driving more engagement for their team and the MLB unlike any other team in the league right now.

We don't throw batteries on the field when someone is struggling, we stand up, applaud and let him know he's got our support. We are the epitome of 'no one likes us, we don't care!'

Harper reminds me a little of Pete Rose. He will never be the fastest runner, most home runs, most RBI's but the guy never gives up and would run thru a wall to prevent opponent from getting a hit. I used to hate Middleton because he refused to go over the luxury tax threshold, but now he's turned a corner and it's amazing to see. The man is just a Phillies fan who happens to be rich. he stays after games and throws balls to fans in the stands, he celebrates wins with his players, he goes into the stands during games to sit with fans it's crazy. Hopefully this year we can live up to what he said to Ryan Howard in the clubhouse after the loss in '09: "Ryan, I want my fucking trophy back. It's fucking ours."

Middleton wasn't the controlling owner until 2014, and even then he didn't have a majority ownership (still doesn't). When he said they wouldn't go over the luxury tax that was the team's position. He couldn't come out and say he wanted to but the other owners didn't. That would be unprofessional. Now that he has a more prominent ownership role he can do more of what he wants.

    • @bengoodwin465

But that seemed to change with dombrowski and especially last year after the lockout ended and we signed schwarber and casty.

The Philadelphia fans eat and sleep their teams.
John Middleton has spent "stupid" money on players. But he is spending that money wisely. He is being careful not to bring in any player that will be toxic in the clubhouse (see the Padres). The players he signed all fit into their rolls and have become part of the Phillies family. This family culture is what is drawing the talent. The fan base just adds to that talent draw. The fans want (if not willed) the players to succeed. The players play for their teammates and the fans. It is a beautiful symbiosis.
This culture is now effecting the other Philly pro sports teams. The Eagles players are amazed when they hear the E-A-G-L-E-S chant during a Phillies game. It is something special!

I'm a 3rd generation Philadelphia sports fan. People don't understand us. We are extremely passionate about our teams. Win or Lose. One of the best fanbases in sports. Watching some old plays and calls just makes me tear up. There's a reason there is a ton of sports bars in that area. I will never forget Harry's Call in 2008 when I was 14. "The 0-2 Pitch. Swing and a miss. STRUCK HIM OUT! The Philadelphia Phillies are two-thousand-eight world champions of baseball. Brad Lidge does it again!"

I was on my knees with my hands in the air faster than Lidge was. I think the ball was about half way to the plate, and you just knew what was going to happen. That and Rhys with the bat slam were the most awesome moments I have seen (yes, I know Harper's HR was great, but Rhys had so much anger and years of frustration explode in that moment).

I've been a Phillies fan since I was old enough to know what baseball is. Born in Philly in '57, I remember like it was yesterday lying on the living room floor with my brothers, watching Jim Bunning pitch a perfect game on Father's Day 1964 at Shea. So many memories through the years. So many players to wear the uniform. And me, wearing my little Phillies uniform, striking out batters and hitting home runs in the driveway out back, while By Saam and Bill Campbell called the play. Sitting right here on my desk is a photo from last year, of my son and my grandson posing in the right field bleachers with the scoreboard in the background, showing the World Series graphic. And the Phils won that game. What a memory for them!

As a Phillies fan, I'm so glad I was born into this fan base. Great video and I'll add two more points: one, even though the prices are so high you still get an egalitarian crowd. There's a lot of people putting down a months worth of pay to get tickets because we care that much. Two, the crowd is a very smart and aware crowd. Also one with a long memory. During the Strider game there were taunts that referenced a random interview he did three years about him not liking crowds. The best one is when we locked the Tomahawk Chop, though lol. I love it here
