  • In this video Jay and Tanya ‪@JayandTanyaTravel‬ are on a cruise ship visiting 6 different countries in West Africa. Is this a good way to see Africa? Or is it a sorry imitation of what a great African experience should be. See what they have to say about the advantages and disadvantages of taking an African cruise.

    I met you on a cruise ! My preference is to do adventure / expedition cruises on smaller ships ( under 600 passengers ). Seabourn has just announced a 90 day Grand Africa cruise, circumnavigating the continent. What are your thoughts ? Should I do the entire trip or… I’m thinking of doing the Barcelona to Capetown segment. Then from Capetown going inland for a land safari.

      Hi Bill. We've looked at Seabourn's new 90-day Grand Africa trip and while it is intriguing, I think your plan of doing West Africa to Cape Town and then doing a safari makes sense. 90 days is a long time and we found our 18-day trip, combined with safaris beforehand worked great. Thanks for your comment.

    This was a very helpful video. Your last few points were key because my spouse and I have thought about an African cruise but feared that we wouldn't truly get to see much. Going into museums is delightful, but we've done much of that and when we're in Africa we'd expect broader experiences. After all, the flight alone is a long one! And these are not the most economical cruises either. I do have a question also: Did you find the sailing to be smooth? I have heard others say the ocean is extremely rough the entire time. We agree too that after so many days on a cruise ship, it's time to get off and do other land-based vacations. We've taken about 12 cruises and while they are convenient for sleeping accommodations and food, well, cruises can actually be boring experiences. There's not much to them. The best cruise we were on was a river cruise down the Danube where we had 96 people on board, met many nice people, and had the rustling sound of the river to put us to sleep.

      Thank you for your thoughtful comments. Neither Tanya nor I remember the sailing to be necessarily rough. Maybe we were just lucky but it seemed pretty smooth. I think the main thing to keep in mind on an African cruise is that you're going to have some worthwhile introductory experiences to some fascinating places but not really anything in depth. In that sense, an African cruise is no different than other cruises. Just look at it as a taste of part of the continent. But, we're glad we went and we did enjoy some time on our own in Senegal at the conclusion of the cruise. We probably would enjoy another land trip to Namibia as well. We liked your thoughts on river cruising. We've never been on one, other than a day trip down the Rhine, and every river cruiser we've talked with has enjoyed their trip. Thanks for commenting.

      Thank you also for the reply, much appreciated. I would encourage you and Tanya to consider river cruising. Very tranquil. The Danube is our favorite, we spent time in Prague (incredible), then Vienna prior to the cruise. We then finished in Budapest and spent a few days there as well. We cruised with Avalon, but there are many choices. Just a lovely, peaceful way to see so many places. Thank you again for your review of your Africa cruise, I agree with everything you said.

    We think an African cruise is similar to any other one - it’s like tasting a flight of beers. Lots of variety and breadth, but no really deep enjoyment of any of them. But on a continent that may feel very foreign and intimidating, a cruise can be the safety net that makes it feel more accessible.

      I agree. We couldn't have gotten the same in-depth safari experience we had in east Africa on a cruise ship. But, I think some of the west African port cities still gave us a good feel for life in that part of the continent.

    On which cruise line are you traveling along the coast of Africa? Did you consider others before you selected this one?

      Hi Reuven. We were on Seabourn for this trip and chose them because 1) they just happened to have an itinerary that fit with the rest of our 3-month trip plan to Africa and 2) we had sailed with them before and had always been pleased. I'm sure there must be other cruise lines that are starting to go to West Africa but for this trip we just went with what we knew. Thanks for your comment.

    Do US citizens need visa on the cruise to Ivory coast?

    • @JayandTanyaTravel
      @JayandTanyaTravel  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We didn't go to Ivory Coast on this cruise so I can't answer that. But, we did need one for Benin and, as I recall, the other countries issued entry visas. Our best advice is to check the web ahead of time to see which countries you visit require visas for US citizens. Thanks for the question and enjoy your trip.
