Actually, I can imagine someone making an indie game about going out for a walk at night. It could be a philosophical, psychological horror, or emotional game.
It’s called “The Graveyard” where you play as an extremely slow elderly lady shambling down a graveyard, before sitting down on a bench to contemplate her life. At any point during the game, the lady can suddenly die. This game costs $5 on Steam.
He loves doing them, but the amount of work involved into making to the amount of views they get is hard to justify them. But we might do a couple together soon!
It's really too bad this series never worked out. These were some of my favorite videos. I'd never realized how different mainstream 8 and 16-bit gaming was in England compared to America.
+Hiragirin Ashens made it, if you watch his WPad review(windows 7 tablet) a couple of years back he shows you it to demonstrate the playback quality on the device.
Spiketmd Their business practices are still awful. The manager was completely out of touch with both technology and the gaming industry. Their programmers all worked from home, which is fine enough but the communication with the rest of the company seemed off. Only departments in the office was the design and the testing department. Both had around one - two employees.
Honestly, Nightwalk today sounds like it could be a very successful, alternative-style, psychological horror game. Most likely something with a ton of strange obscurity and lore behind it, the game would take the whole world by storm, particularly the younger generations, and then there would be at least 7 Game Theory videos made on it.
Interestingly, the two authors of "Night Walk" (programming and graphics) had *already* produced a Ghosts-n'-Goblins clone for the 8-bit Atari computers called "Domain of the Undead". Which was at least a good name, even if that wasn't a great game either. I wonder if this was originally intended to be marketed as a 16-bit ST version of "Domain of the Undead" by the original publishers (Red Rat Software) and then the authors sold it to Alternative instead?
Seeing as I was interested to hear the full soundtrack of Night Walk, I ripped the music from the disk. It is named "enforcer2" which backs up your point with it not fitting the game at all. Probably something random sent in by Paul Krief [known as 'Rimshot' by the demoscene. Oh the irony!]. I searched for the game The Enforcer on the Amiga. I think the music would fit that much better (a lightgun game). So there you have it on that game. Paul Krief was also credited for the music in the game Grey Slayer. Played that (very fucking boring) and the music fits way better even if it's somewhat simpler AND 54 SECONDS LONG. I ripped that and it was literally named "fart". Can't help but be honest with his own song.
Would love to see more of these Ashens. I know they're more work for not much of a return, but still, you're so good at them. And it's always fun to see Commodore 64 and Speccy games I had to suffer through get featured.
It's not really a return. This video was originally upload on December 12, 2010 on 'thatguywiththeglasses.com'. He did another TOGYPNHO on there, Oriental Hero. Ashens said in his live Q&A (the video is available on his extra channel I believe) that these video's take a very long time to make and that the revenue of it, is rather small. Don't get me wrong; I love this series and I really would like it to be back but I don't see it happening any time soon :(
Judging by the title, I thought that Night Walk would be a tongue and cheek game about a guy returning home at night from a random bar (gay or not) drunk off his ass, suddenly wandering into an ancient wood, being forced to fight for his life against zombies, ents, goblins, killer grizzlies and mormons. With the aid of a shotgun.
Gotta love the Zub shout-out. I actually read the story about the cover on the Pickford brothers' blog; how they'd offered to design their own cover for the game *for free*, but the publisher insisted they hire an outside artist to draw it instead, which is how we ended up with the off-brand Boba Fett in a Power Rangers suit.
Ah, Grundy New Brain and Acorn Atom.... haven't got those in my collection. Got an Atmos though. It's surprisingly capable (and by that, I mean quite adequate)
i kept pressing to find out what the flashing picture was i expected an easter egg and it's just "options" :( that was 4 min of my life used for nothing :( ah well
***** Yes,it IS in the opinion of the player and since you like the game and he does not,you think the issues either add to the game or just don't mind them but he thinks of them as well...issues.
AvP: Aliens vs. Popeye. I'd probably like that. I wonder how it compared to Popeye Saves the Earth, a pinball machine where Bluto feels like bringing rare animals into extinction for profit and Popeye travels around on a cruise ship.
I am so glad you finally uploaded this one to TH-cam! This is probably my favorite episode of this whole series. Speaking of that, here's hoping we see more Terrible Old Games in the future!
The best thing is, go to ALTERNATIVE SOFTWARE LTD's website now and it says their celebrating "3O Years of Excellence" which is funny not only because everything they've ever touched has turned to shit, but also because of the long running excellence joke that Ashens has coined.
Please make more of these, it's great to see what kids in the 80's had to endure with their non Nintendo and Sega consoles...Yeah I grew up in the 90's, since I was 6 so sue me. :D
The Rugby League games they make are very good and actually get substantially better with each new iteration. If only the same could be said for FIFA's game by game improvement.
I was really impressed with how bad that is..and that they're still going as a company. I bet that releasing indie games programmes(!) really worked out for them.. ;)
I hope that ***** does more of these videos as it was very good. I love the ones that Jeff Minter does on old crap retro games (like by Interceptor Micro's), but I can see a deep comedic mine of binary based tat to mine in the pursuit of giving us something to laugh at :)
9:03 That's more or less the business model that caused the '83 crash. As it turns out having your games be made by random out-of-work programmers doesn't make for good quality. Who would have thought?
I remember seeing this on That Guy With The Glasses and I always wondered why it wasn't uploaded here. Good to see it again. I know this may never happen, but if it is possible, I'd love to see another episode of TOGYPNHO, I used to love this series.
GOD almighty, I heard the first tones of that beep and they were the same pitch as my alarm clock and I about put my fist through the screen in anger, terror, horror, and sheer vulgarity. Gyeugh.
Thats why i never nightwalk on my own, because theres the danger that some evil zombie monsters from another galaxy chase me.And the problem is that i dont own a bow like the dude on the game.Cool review man hopefully we will see more of those.
Mahaveez Though i am not understanding what you are saying if you caught up with me i was make some sort of a joke. Some times i wonder if i must go out and buy a bow and some arrows for the real monsters that are out there.
Just wanted to say that I've discovered your TH-cam channel, and specifically your series about the crappiest old videogames. (You must thank Super Adventures In Gaming for this!) I'm a big fan! I hope you'll review more old games. Your voice is pleasantly soothing.

Hobby Gardener, Dental Routine, Slow Drywall, Front Sweeper, Tax Season, Paint Upkeep, actually pretty hard to beat Night Walk in shear title dullness.

Man, now instead of an indie game that's an rpg that's a metaphor for depression it's a walking simulator that's a metaphor for depression
I really think you should bring this series back, man. I have loved every episode of this series.
He loves doing them, but the amount of work involved into making to the amount of views they get is hard to justify them.
But we might do a couple together soon!
*****
Dude, seriously...do it...You guys have got a great banter. Would be cool to see you do more board games too....the pacman one was funny as f*ck
Mike Rydal
Thanks bud!!! Well we got a few more board game videos in the bag, they'll be going up soon to keep you going in the meantime :D
***** I agree with Mike over there! I loved your guy's turbo video! I still laugh myself silly over the ice field!
***** I got one for donation. Its a blatant rip off of 'Kong Man' thats been repackaged as a Sonic the Hedgehog game.
It's really too bad this series never worked out. These were some of my favorite videos. I'd never realized how different mainstream 8 and 16-bit gaming was in England compared to America.
"Early Evening Hiding Behind Walls" for game of the year.
Still better than Afternoon Run '06.
To this day that is still an in-joke between me and my former roommate.
That opening was glorious. Kudos to whoever created it.
+Hiragirin Ashens made it, if you watch his WPad review(windows 7 tablet) a couple of years back he shows you it to demonstrate the playback quality on the device.
gmansplit Ooooo :O Awesome. Thank you for the heads up :3
***** No problem.
gmansplit Ahh I thought I remembered him mentioning this!
BenjaminGoose Nice. Kudos to you.
The fucking fact when I worked for Alternative Software back in 2008
Anthony Rothstein
i blame you for this
Spiketmd Their business practices are still awful. The manager was completely out of touch with both technology and the gaming industry.
Their programmers all worked from home, which is fine enough but the communication with the rest of the company seemed off.

+Anthony Rothstein A gaming company with awful business practices? That never happens
+Ian Williams
Should say ALMOST never happens, or as it's more commonly known, "seems to happen with an alarming increase over time."

I wonder if this was originally intended to be marketed as a 16-bit ST version of "Domain of the Undead" by the original publishers (Red Rat Software) and then the authors sold it to Alternative instead?
Fun fact: Domain of the Undead later became the cover game for Stuart Ashen's recent book, "Attack of the Flickering Skeletons".
Seeing as I was interested to hear the full soundtrack of Night Walk, I ripped the music from the disk. It is named "enforcer2" which backs up your point with it not fitting the game at all. "Age of the ever-living ones" and it's set in a graveyard.
Would love to see more of these Ashens. I know they're more work for not much of a return, but still, you're so good at them. And it's always fun to see Commodore 64 and Speccy games I had to suffer through get featured.
I'd really like to see another Terrible Old Games episode. It's been so long since the last one, and they're honestly hillarious.
"Son, I am image macro" Ashens, you always make me laugh... **bursts into laughter**
*Nightwalk HD: Retribution*
Make it happen, Kickstarter.
Wait, let's call it *Night Walk: Rewalken* and get Christopher Walken as a voice actor.
It's 2021 now and taking a walk at night is indeed something that we can only do in the world of video games.
It's always hunting season where I live
(Feral hogs, at least - not so much "long pig" lol)
"I survived? Marvellous!"

I actually rewatched most of these recently so I'm happy to see it return.
It's not really a return. This video was originally upload on December 12, 2010 on 'thatguywiththeglasses.com'. He did another TOGYPNHO on there, Oriental Hero.

Just so we're on the same page, I do realise it was an old video, but in the context of TH-cam it's still a return in that sense.
Tommohawked Ok my mistake then. I thought that you thought that this was a 'brand new' video :P .
'A tongue and cheek game', what?
Would love to see more of these Dr Ashens

New games in the line: Sitting Patiently 3D, Table Setting Simulator, and Fix The Zipper. Such classics.
+Ninjamohawk _Sim City_, also affectionately known as _Advanced Mayor Simulator_! ;)
or how about Manhunt, aka *Midnight Murder Spree*
The title screen must be the earliest image of the sliver skull
"You won't Zub me this time, you...zubs."
whatthefuckareyoutalkingabout-
advertising eh?
Masterof thelag wouldn't call that advertising. more like COMMENTING
GravityZero I meant that the advert was weird, not that his comment was advertising the game.
More terrible old games, pls Ashens.
Did you learn this release schedule from Guru Larry?
Fuck you!
***** The Guru has spoken.
*****
I love you too!
Freako
:D
Ha ha
I had this on the Amiga, never seen it mentioned anywhere before so thanks for digging it up!
Man I loved watching these on the old site some of the best videos Ashen has made. Vinnie Vole's Existential Nightmare is one of my favorites.
This game has "half-assed" written all over it.
Ah, Grundy New Brain and Acorn Atom.... haven't got those in my collection. Got an Atmos though. It's surprisingly capable (and by that, I mean quite adequate)
I think you mean "limited". Very, VERY limited.
That was my first impression, but then I played a few more games on it, and found it to be slightly better than I'd first thought.
i kept pressing to find out what the flashing picture was i expected an easter egg
and it's just "options" :( that was 4 min of my life used for nothing :(
ah well
Ive seen avgn play worse games.
Here :) gyazo.com/da8712e61173ae61b5705e5c3d83a368
***** Sorry,don't think that's exactly correct.
***** Yes,it IS in the opinion of the player and since you like the game and he does not,you think the issues either add to the game or just don't mind them but he thinks of them as well...issues.
***** Wrong, James did Commodore 64 games such as Superman
AvP: Aliens vs. Popeye. I'd probably like that.
I wonder how it compared to Popeye Saves the Earth, a pinball machine where Bluto feels like bringing rare animals into extinction for profit and Popeye travels around on a cruise ship.
What were those black bumps at the bottom of the screen? Chairs for Tom Servo and Crow?
I am so glad you finally uploaded this one to TH-cam! This is probably my favorite episode of this whole series. Speaking of that, here's hoping we see more Terrible Old Games in the future!

Americans need to learn more about Amiga games.
@@Snufkin224 I think the Atari XL is sufficient for us Yanks! It is for me anyway...
I actually really like the intro, before it turns into a cacophony of bitnoise.
Also I may just have to try that Dalek game for shits and giggles.
I think the colour scheme and animation in this game looks pretty good for its time.
Also do more in this series
-1988
-Megaman 2, Mario 2, Contra
NOPE
ExplosionRadius fair point. However those were made by Capcom, Nintendo and Konami. This was made by 2 guys
Ahhh I forgot how much I loved these videos. Please continue them!
Man, I really missed Terrible old games you probably never heard of. Thank you dr. Ashen *_*
This is one of the best series I have ever seen! You should do more of these.
The Rugby League games they make are very good and actually get substantially better with each new iteration.
If only the same could be said for FIFA's game by game improvement.
Fantastic episode. I love this series and am glad to see you make another episode. Looking forward to that future project with you and Larry Bundy Jr.
oh my god I choked on my tea... seriously almost came out my nose I was laughing so hard. thank you for the blast from the past.....
This is by far my favourite out of this series
Loved this series! Good to see this ep finally on the tube.
I've been waiting so long for something like this again
So Pontefract is now known for two things - the Haribo factory and crap games.
Erm, pontefract cakes?
awesomotommy They come out the Haribo factory... :)
9:03 That's more or less the business model that caused the '83 crash.
As it turns out having your games be made by random out-of-work programmers doesn't make for good quality. Who would have thought?
8:56 the life counter is making a kitten face at Ashens trying to act cute.
Oh man this brings me back
That amiga music is epic lol!
I can't believe you never uploaded this to TH-cam either. I've been waitin' forever to see this on not blip.
I like this series and finally to see it coming back for a while..I miss that "a fitting punishment" quote..
Huh, that intro was Zero Punctuation tier.
I like it
It's like a mix between ZP and AVGN
Had exactly the same thought. He and Ashens could definitely do some kind of let's play. Maybe something in Yahtzee's Let's Drown Out series?
Wow
Much Zero Punctuation
Very Yahtzee
So amazing
Real British
*****
Go away
SketchAndEtch wow
doge
much original
Brought me to their website just out of curiosity. Chef Excellence also has designed it. Go yourself, "AlternativeSoftware" second result.
that intro
Please do more of these man. I really enjoy them.
More stuff us in the US never heard - the better.
I'm just happy to see NFS Most Wanted in an Ashens video. Boy, did I have a lot of fun with that game.
I should play this game before I go to bed. I imagine it makes for a marvelous sleep aid.
I was just wondering when we would get another one :) Thanks Ashens!
I love this stuff ashen s goes into so much detail, give us more!
There totally need to be more Terrible Old Games videos. These are my favorite ones of yours.
I like it because of the entertainment the video gives!
I love how at 6:00 he had nowhere to run so he just crouched and covered his head :D
You know, that description actually sounds like it would be a pretty awesome game or movie.
Funnily enough today's mold for first person horror games could be described as "night walk"
However, you still have the ability to alternate between "nightwalk" mode and "nightrunforyourlife" mode at will.
Mahaveez
Though i am not understanding what you are saying if you caught up with me i was make some sort of a joke. Some times i wonder if i must go out and buy a bow and some arrows for the real monsters that are out there.
MORE, THIS IS AWESOME ASHENS.
Just wanted to say that I've discovered your TH-cam channel, and specifically your series about the crappiest old videogames. (You must thank Super Adventures In Gaming for this!) I'm a big fan! I hope you'll review more old games. Your voice is pleasantly soothing.
In this episode Stuart records voice-over from within a large cavernous void from 2:30 on.
Thats why kids never walk alone at night because evil zombies from another galaxies might atack you,and probably will need your trusty bow to defend your selfs.Awesome ashens my boy i would love to see that in some other episodes as well.
Nice one, one of my favourite series of yours, you should do more
i'm pretty sure you didn't upload a few of these.
That intro is a thing of beauty
I really like this new bit about takes me back to childhood in the 8/16 bit personal computer era and the crap i used to play on those systems.
Hobby Gardener, Dental Routine, Slow Drywall, Front Sweeper, Tax Season, Paint Upkeep, actually pretty hard to beat Night Walk in shear title dullness.
Please do more of these, they are excellent, your biggest fan aged 32.
hes gonna take you back to the past,
to play some crappy games that are tat,
he doesnt know,
if he would rather have,
a popstation speaker,
pressed against his ear,
he would rather eat,
the rotten stuff,
that they call food in poundland,
he is the most british gamer youve ever heard,
he is not the Avgn,
but he is still epic,
his name is Dr-ashens
I quite like the name 'nightwalk'...
First time I've seen this intro! Awesome!
Wow, the intro. Thanks for the nightmares.
I love it. It sounds very much like the band Crystal Castles, their first album.
Hey ashens I'm a really big fan of yours and I found this video interesting as usually. Love all your videos.
I wish this feature could of worked... these are my favourite videos
I appreciate his off-the-cuff stuff, but yeah, his scripted segments like this are pretty wow!
In my opinion, the intro used in this video is the most awesome on all.
you remind me of the narrator in the the stanley parable
This was actually really good. More of these please.
Early Evening Hiding Behind Walls is one of my favorite games from the Xbox 360.
FINALLY!
The first time i watched this i had to grapple with the god awful interface on the original site
Thanks ashens!
You needed an athletic imagination back in the day.
Checked their website. "28 years of excellence."
They're on to you, Ashen.
2:00 I think they look like floating potatoes. 😊👍
👍🥔👍 Agree to agree!
Funny how his headband stops at his ears lol
The plot actually sounds fucking awesome
I can't _wait_ to be tested by The Druids!
Never uploaded to YT? I've seen this before though...Weird. I wonder where I saw it? Did your website use a different video player?
That sound effect for the bees...oh god my ears.
The blurb on the back of the box appears to be describing the 2000AD strip Slaine.
I wonder if the game developers actually lost the license to use Slaine characters, and it was too late to change the back of the box at that point?
This reminds me of an Action 52 game.
Gamingmill's recent review of the oculus rift is an obvious nod to your classic couch videos. And it's amazing, as usual.
EDIT: I'd give it a 9.5/10
Oh my god... how creepy is this... when I was bored this morning I just flicked through a bunch of random old Ashens videos and saw the promo for this and watched it... then later on it gets uploaded to TH-cam! I saw it show up and thought that TH-cam somehow recommended an old video to me, and then I remembered it wasn't on TH-cam!!
"Shufling down the stairs"....but...thats the best thing ever xD
