I'm sure you know whether this is true or not, but I was under the impression Nintendo owned the patent on the D-Pad design and is the reason that Microsoft and Sony consoles have such poor D-Pads. Not that that would stop any chinese knock-off maker, but maybe the Mega Duck makers were serious enough to tread lightly around Nintendo? Though not too lightly based on the general design of the system.
@@AgentTasmania Are you just basing that on clockrate? I wouldn't base your comparison just on that, but this machine does have sveral advantages over a lot of the other obscure machines like the Gamate and the Supervision as it has hardware scrolling, and to add to the that, dual layer scrolling. That is a gigantic help as it suddenly means you can have scrolling without having to rewrite a framebuffer for every single frame, which is usually not possible on machines without scrolling such as the ZX spectrum but is barely possible on these machines as they have slightly faster CPUs but also significantly lower resolutions and (well not compared with the spectrum but compared with an Amstrad or an Atari ST etc) lower colour depth meaning less bits per pixel. The Mega Duck however doesn't seem to have any proper sound hardware as far as i can tell, requiring sound to be done in software, but this can probably be excused thanks to the CPU time saved thanks to scrolling capbilities.
heres a fun fact that will probably get lost in the comments: the company behind this thing later went on to produce a few movies in HK including one called "MicroSex Office"

the Mega Duck handheld was a part of the whole Mega Duck system, which included the handheld, a thermal printer and an edutainment laptop for kids (which had both qwerty and piano keyboard). handheld games could be played on the laptop. I actually had the laptop and the printer back then, I can remember it sold for DM 299 in Germany (don't know the exact exchange rate, but it must have been around $150) in 1993/94.

Thanks a lot Ashens!
My first experience of Lemmings was a version on the Blue Peter website, where the Lemmings were replaced with Blue Peter presenters and the pets of the time. It was all very odd, but I enjoyed it none the less. Also, 'Mega Duck' is an absolutely brilliant name for a handheld console.
what a nostalgia trip; i bought one of these back in the early 90s, they were for sale in the Netherlands and i remember that i liked it and i had a few games for it, offcourse it got thrown away later like the rest of my childhood toys and i wished i still had it today
It's always cool to see Sachen games, the king of the crappy Taiwanese games. As Ashens pointed out, they were absolute whores with their clone games, publishing the same stolen games on NES/Famicom, Game Boy, Mega Drive, and as shown, the Mega Duck and Supervision Taiwanese handhelds. For those curious though, DO NOT track down Sachen games on GameBoy - they're buggy, slow and awful - not to mention expensive due to rarity. 0:57 I'm fairly sure the Wonderswan is a few years newer than the mega duck. I sort of want a mega duck because its quite interesting and the name is funny. the only other old handheld i have is an Atari Lynx which is of course another very interesting bit of kit. I once owned a Quickshot SuperVision for a few days that i bought from ebay before returning it because it had lots of battery contact rust problems and we couldn't get it to work consistently. i only discovered it because of that ebay listing as it was another item being sold by someone also selling a couple of lynxes. We did get it to start up once though and i played a bit of Crystball. the Megaduck looks to be superior hardware wise thanks to the scrolling (with two planes too) and the Z80 CPU (they are supposedly better than 6502s though I am only familiar with 6502s. They have 16 bit registers and many more registers in general with instructions that allow you to work only with registers as far as I know, while the 6502 only has 3 8-bit general purpose registers and almost all instructions working on data use only one register and take the other value directly from memory), though the sound judging by the specs looks to be completely software based unlike the supervision with some specialised hardware, and the Duck has slighty lower resolution that the Supervision but barely. Also don't you hate it when a Wikipedia page just says its "from asia" as if that is specific instead of telling you what country it actually originated in? it says that on the wiki page from the supervision but the mega duck it does tell you is from Hong Kong i think. Great video, also great to see someone who actually shows themselves to not know certain things rather than pulling information of Wikipedia and stating it as if it was general knowledge. Also good to see someone actually recognise these funny machines as their actual own designs which they are instead of just calling them "gameboy knockoffs".
Goddamn. They even had Boxxle on a Mega Duck. Boxxle being the GameBoy's version of Pile Wonder. You know, I used to think that game was obscure. Until I heard that it was on every electronic device to have ever existed in the history of ever.
I had a TV with a version built in. An early noughties CRT thing, not any fanciness. And now I'm wondering what sort of games these Smart TVs could manage...
Puppet Knight (Bomberman clone) at 5:00: In Hudsonami's original game, Bomberman becomes a real boy (the hero from Lode Runner) at the end of the game. What other character is famous for becoming a real boy? And the website lied to you. What other character is famous for being a puppet and lying?
Aaron Gosselin I refreshed three times, of course had to sit through an ad every time, before realizing changing the quality fixed it. TH-cam seems to get worse and worse...
Fix for Black Screen: 1. Switch Quality to 240p (Press the gear, Quality, select 240p) 2. Change it back to your desired video! 3. Enjoy the hilariously bad tat! :D
Yep, I had a 161 games in 1 cartridge for the game boy (although it only had 27 games, the rest were just hacked version with more lifes, or things like that), and that first game was in there, but with a different name. It was not in the other 2 "x games in 1 cartridge" games that I had though, so I guess there were a lot of different tittles for this console, and other similar ones... because some of the games in those cartridges... man, they were WEIRD...
Hey Ashens, you know that Sachen made a ton of unlicensed games for the NES, Genesis / Mega Drive, and Game Boy? You should check them out if you can get your hands on them. They're terrible, but hilarious.
Upload longer videos please Stuart I don't want this to come across in a bad way but sometimes I listen to your videos as I fall to sleep and the longer ones are better for this. In that I'm not saying that your videos send me to sleep I'm just saying I like falling asleep to them for some reason because they are strangely comforting and drown out some of the bad thoughts that go round my brain.

Also good to see someone actually recognise these funny machines as their actual own designs which they are instead of just calling them "gameboy knockoffs".
Mmm wintergreen Tic-Tacs. Oh, it's a d-pad.
Felt obligated to look up that painting because I study art. Thanks for inadvertently making me do extra-curricular work, Stu.
I know these cheapo consoles always suck but I'm still find myself watching every damn review. Ashens should sell used cars.
a handheld that could play lemmings in the early 90's would have been a hot commodity
XD roy in old french means king so basically its "king snake"
Cool, I never knew about Mega Duck. I too have a soft spot for handhelds and would love to own Mega Duck someday. Thanks for the video. :)
Try switching it straight to 720p, that worked for me
And now I'm wondering what sort of games these Smart TVs could manage...
no valentines video?
Puppet Knight (Bomberman clone) at 5:00: In Hudsonami's original game, Bomberman becomes a real boy (the hero from Lode Runner) at the end of the game. What other character is famous for becoming a real boy?
And the website lied to you. What other character is famous for being a puppet and lying?
Lots of videos has been getting a black screen lately. I don't know what TH-cam is up to, but it's not very nice. Bad TH-cam, baaad!
If you refresh the page, it will be fixed.
But its still bad >:(
Set it to 240p
GriffinRulesdotcom Then set it back.
Aaron Gosselin I refreshed three times, of course had to sit through an ad every time, before realizing changing the quality fixed it. TH-cam seems to get worse and worse...
powderBlock Indeed, it's not getting any better whatsoever, just worse. I'm not really sure what's going on anymore.
I've time traveled from 2019 and that couch looks so very youthful in this video.
Fix for Black Screen:
1. Switch Quality to 240p (Press the gear, Quality, select 240p)
2. Change it back to your desired video!
3. Enjoy the hilariously bad tat! :D
Snake Roy looks like a Tsuchinoko.
Mega Duck- Wonderful sound strange shape
I thought my eyes went cloudy when the auto-focus acted weird o.o
Dear Ashens, your people need more Terrible Old Games we've probably never heard of. Thanks.
Wow, Pile Wonder = Boxes World! All it needs now is a smug looking bear. If you get that reference, I will love you forever.
JAUN TRAUN

DŽAAAAN TRAAAAN
Serana JonTron... JonTron did a review on that game.
Serana JENTREN.
I was drinking juice when you put up the cover for Snake Roy and now I have to clean my clothes
Hey Ashens, you know that Sachen made a ton of unlicensed games for the NES, Genesis / Mega Drive, and Game Boy? You should check them out if you can get your hands on them. They're terrible, but hilarious.
The game over tune for Puppet Knight reminded me a bit of the title screen for Sky Destroyer on the NES
Upload longer videos please Stuart I don't want this to come across in a bad way but sometimes I listen to your videos as I fall to sleep and the longer ones are better for this.
In that I'm not saying that your videos send me to sleep I'm just saying I like falling asleep to them for some reason because they are strangely comforting and drown out some of the bad thoughts that go round my brain.
listenonrepeat.com
you can put in any youtube video and it'll repeat it
You can also type "repeat" after youtube in the url of any video and it redirects you to a site that does exactly what you think it does
I know EXACTLY what you mean, i do the same! :) ill watch it first though cause i dont want to miss ashens :D , nice to know im not the only one
Oh wow, I found one of these in a thrift store several years ago, awesome to see it on your channel
