    If populism "is always a form of identity politics" than you must be speaking about the left? They use identity politics even more than the right and according to your term that would qualify Joe Biden as a populist because his cabinet use identity politics in their campaigns (he/him, she/her, they/them). I disagree and believe populism is simply a reaction to an imbalance in the nation state as a whole and has nothing to do with identity politics. It has more to do with class. In fact, it's the elite that use identity not the working people. In my opinion, it's the working class people that become nationalist first because they are the ones paying (bank bailouts, currency devaluation, loss of jobs, high taxes, high rent, housing shortages). The elite do not.
