Blue Eye Samurai was one of, if not the first show I watched this year in January and I think I can safely say it's going to stay my absolute favourite show of 2024 (unless Arcane s2 topples it at the end of the year). I love virtually everything about it, from the setting to the artful shots, from the complicated, nuanced main cast of characters (I love all of them sm!) to the exploration of themes like discrimination, identity, self-hatred VS self-realization, learning from others on different paths in life;
...and then, to top all this, my etl radar started tingling pretty early on through my first watch and they had the guts to actually build upon it (in a way that makes complete sense, since both of these characters use (sword)fighting as a coping mechanism and to them it's a sort of identity-defining quality, so it's almost ingrained in their beings to be belligerant and to hugely respect and value someone else who is similarly minded) and you can bet this dynamic was always going to be the very first thing I was going to edit about this show.
Because - besides the wonderful character development - the way these two together are completely unhinged is just UNMATCHED.
Taigen fighting Mizu that one time and basically reimagining their one fight while doing the deed with Akemi *already in the second episode*? DEAD. Madame Kaji explaining desire to Mizu and them immediately flashing to aggressively rolling in the snow with Taigen and breathing deep into each other's personal space? MADNESS INCARNATE. Mizu casually stealing Taigen's scarf for themselves and leaving him with the first sword they ever forged in exchange (because it fits well in his hand )? DEAD AGAIN. A Shang and Mulan/'she's the man' type of situation with Taigen internally bi-panicking the whole way through those last few episodes on top of all the rest? TOTAL INSANITY.
(And this being only s1...)
They definitely have a long road ahead still [especially Taigen needs to keep following through on those beginnings of self-reflection; maybe if a rather popular s2 prediction is right and he did stow away on a certain ship, facing London as even more of an outsider than Mizu could do him a lot of good too in that regard], but I certainly hope they get to walk it and we get to see it to the end when they decide to throw their scheduled duel and go live in peace somewhere they (and this show!) deserve it.
I would absolutely love to do more on these two or try my hand at solo Mizu and/or Akemi videos in the future (I even have songs in mind, imagine that), so hopefully this won't be the last you see from me on BES...but knowing my record and how little time I have for vidding as of rn, you may see them in the next year or so xD. In the meantime, hope someone enjoys this as much as I did making it!

I think this show has successfully made us all invested in Mizu finding their place in the world where they're safe and loved for who they are (and finally allowing themselves to feel all these things) and don't have to exist only for revenge. @@irydionlover ah, it's been a looooong time since i edited anything animated, don't think i have the juice for it anymore (even though animated series are what i watch the most tbh)... this got me thinking about the fact i used to mainly edit anime (and that was back in the old days of yt) and now i feel old lol
but i'll be here to watch anything else you make in that department :)
(lmk if you find those interesting... though if oyu want a bit of a fantasy element to this type of setting and story then i recommend dororo and hakuouki for sure)

As always, so happy you enjoyed this, even if I keep subjecting you to shows you don't know half the time! If you don't mind a more mature-themed animated show with a fair amount of sex and violence, BES is *such* a great watch though, I can't recommend it enough. I love the idea of these two together to bits (as I probably made quite clear here xD to speak of things we both know, I guess they are a bit Jaime/Brienne coded? Taimizu is definitely more unhinged though imho 😆) but the characters and the themes of the story are just really well-written individually, so to limit the show to only ship discourse would be reductive to the whole (just as it was for GOT -when it was still good- ). I have little doubt it will continue to provide inspiration, fingers crossed 🤞

@@naydenlover I found someone pointing out the parallel between Taizu and Braime completely at random on the internet while looking up BES content (op you are a genius!), and the more I think about it the more I CANNOT unsee it honestly, it's absolutely sending me?? Taigen and Jaime being these complete a*holes when you meet them (who both can't help their big mouth and smartass tendencies when in conversation), but then you discover they have a deep sense of honour and they are helpful _in spite_ of personal gain and you start to completely re-evaluating them...and Mizu and Brienne, these masculine-presenting warrior women who have to relearn how to be vulnerable and accept that they are women, too. If they end up giving these two a similar trainwreck of an ending it will break me (I am still *so* upset over that -and Jaime's general character arc assassination- as well! One of D&D's worst s8 crimes for sure 😤). Hopefully this doesn't go too much into detail for you but it _does_ contribute to piquing your interest for the show 👀 I promise it would be time well-invested 😊
