I was in Havana in early October. Mr. Block did a great job demonstrating the warmth and photo geniality of the Cuban people. The street photography in old Havana is off the charts!
This series was wonderful. Thank you. Seeing Cuba brought a tear to my eye. I was last there when I was four years old. That was 62 years ago. It looks very run down. The people are phenomenally resilient. Beautiful work.
Good series. Thanks. I was in Havana in 2007 and saw the pink convertible parked in front of the Presidential Palace. I'm not really surprised that it's still running sixteen years later. The Cuban people were some of the nicest I've met anywhere.
I love all the pictures and how you explain everything you do. I enjoyed all 3 episodes. It's easy to see why you're a National Geographic photographer.
Hey Ira, just tripped over your series on Havana and Vinales. It just so happens I did the exact same 10 day photo shoot in both Havana and Vinales last April/2023 with the same characters at the tobacco farm. I got some great shots of the cigar smokin grandma and her grand daughter together. Also the street life in Havana. I'd love to see your final pics of the trip.
This was a great series. It makes want to go there with camera in tow. It would be really great if you could add a final chapter to this. I would love to see the final selection and your post production process.
I noticed he had the White Balance on Cloudy to warm up the colors. Another successful photographer does this a lot also. Nice work Ira & B&H. Thank you..
@@thomastuorto9929 Yes I usually use cloudy to keep a bit of warmth in the colors. Though this is an easy adjustment in post. It is an old habit from the film days when I always kept a warming filter on the camera
When you were profiling the fisherman, Chi Chi @2:00 I started feeling butterflies in my stomach. It's like I was getting anxious to go out and shoot photos asap. I regularly shoot a senior aged man who has been carving and sculpting stone for over 50 years and I too like to show the hard worn hands that create what other people treasure.
Good presentation on selecting photos for the story. Next it would be interesting to see how the selected photos are arranged in the story and a brief discussion of editing the selected & arranged photos. Thx
What a great episode. Love the detailed explanations and those shots are beautiful. I am so glad I hooked on from.the first episode. I really enjoyed the trip and thanks to you and B&H for sharing the goodies. Hope to see you soon on another trip with awesome pictures. Keep up the good work and stay safe. Greetings from Amsterdam
I really enjoyed your series of Cuba. The images are beautiful and I love the way you approach the locals and the way you make them feel at ease. Do you ever give the local people you photograph a tip or is that considered rude?
So enjoyed, this would love to see the final outcome of the series as they were being used for a presentation. One question I have are model releases required for this kind of photography that they did?
Great Series Ira. I am planning a trip to Cuba and was curious if I would need permits to walk around as one man band with a video FX30 camera and a still camera as well?
A FX30 camera can cost $2198, the monthly wage in Cuba(2023) is 4000 pesos($18). If I were you, I would be more worried about people trying to steal your 10 years of average wage equivalent camera. Cuba can be a human circus where tourists can satisfy any morbid desire.
Saw all your of your Cuba series and really enjoyed them. Brought back fond memories of my trips there. I noticed you were shooting in aperture priority. Is this your go to setting or was this selected because of the conditions of the shoot? Dennis McDonough
Because i didn't go into the water my perspective was a bit limited. That's why i eventually raised the camera above my head using the back monitor and was able to shoot with the dark hat in the water.
Hi Ira, Thoroughly enjoyed your Cuba shots, I was there a few years ago so it brought back fond memories. I noticed in your Metadata your flash exposure varied a lot, do you use Auto on camera flash as a fill in or please explain how you use flash
@@1iblock Hi Ira, I appreciate you do not use flash at all, can you explain if you never use flash, how would your camera flash compensation FEC settings differ between shots in similar Cuban images. Surely you would not change this setting if you are not using FEC, just curious.
@@1iblock I should have known that, sorry for asking, Michael Do you have any other super videos around asia, Japan, South America, I would love to see them.
@@MikeT-yy3 Good questions, I did not notice myself that both cameras had different settings. We are looking at doing some more videos, Asia is high on the list.
Hello Ira Liking your videos on Cuba 🇨🇺 I am planning to visit the country sometime next year. I was thinking of joining a photography workshop (trawling through the internet they’re some workshops are very expensive) or shall I take the plunge and do it on my own. And meetup with a local photographer for a couple of days? I am not a professional photographer and I am a bit shy about approaching people to ask them if I can photograph them. I am interested in creating stories in my photography. Please advise 😊
Interesting video! You definitely took some excellent shots! I'm not really crazy about some of horizontal portraits but I'm sure you can fix those in post. The landscape of the capital and the man with the horse beautiful but some of the other landscapes seemed like they were just the wrong time of day. Enjoyed the video!
Dave, i did not use flash at all during the series. The meta data is showing how the flash compensation is set up on the camera. And yes when i do use the flash I many times tweak it down as a fill light. Good catch !!
I love this series and very much want to photograph in Cuba. Do you hire an interpreter? Is it customary to offer money to the people you photograph? Thank you for doing these videos!
With the variety of fast zoom lens coming out on the market, for Travel Photography, if you had a very limited budget, which would you choose? ...I use Sony also.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this series with Ira Block! What kind of series are would you like to see?

An excellent series of videos. Well worth watching...even more than once. Thank you all.
Thanks for watching!
Would love to see the post-processing of your images all the way to publication. I loved the series though. It's definitely worth watching!
I try to keep post production simple and very true to what i have shot. We can look into this, thanks

Thanks for a great video. The culling process is important.
The culling process is critical, and it takes time.
