FINALLY! I get to do my review of the Covert Companion! Let me know what you think of my opinions on this tool and any of your experiences with it in the comments! 😀🛠 So my quick calculations are based on very much middle of the road equipment prices and I substituted a cheap padlock key for the shim as I couldn’t really find one: Jiggler keys £5 Comb picks £10 Handcuff key £5 Hook set £2 Decent quality but cheap jackknife set £33 Knife decoder tool £10 Knife tool £10 =£75 if I went for really cheap stuff I could get this down a bit but the quality of the tools are good so I’m happy with my choices Covert Companion is $90 which is around £70. Advantages of buying separate are that you do get more, easier to use tools for the price at the disadvantage of them taking up a lot more space. Advantage of the covert companion is for about the same price you get everything concentrated into a small format EDC with the disadvantage that some tools are harder to use and you don’t have as much of a range of tools. I think what you buy, if you want to buy a set of tools like this, is largely a matter of your use case and location as postage and customs charges vary
As always fantastic review! Has unique tools combined but I feel less expensive sets exceed the pros. So not for me. Feel like you are slowly stepping into Bosnian Bills empty slot with LPL if so good for you! Anything you do to support your family is always welcome. I think I'm sold on this little tool. I could be wrong but I think this might be a great introductory tool for a first timer like me to get into this hobby despite the fact that it might be a little pricey in the eyes of someone experienced. Unless you could suggest another kit to introduce me to this fascinating pastime. I trust your judgment. What do YOU think? I'd really like to get into this. Have for quite some time now.
Thanks Ash. This is a very fair and unbiased review, 🙂👍 The compromises on a compact set like this are inevitable. I would like to see a version which focuses on pure picking tools with a few rakes. Maybe two distinctly different sets would be very convenient. It should also be easy to add a few removable 'windscreen wiper' levers, which could 'spoon' together, to save space. Price is a bugbear for people in Europe, however,mbecause of the postage costs, import duties/VAT, and in the UK there is the annoying additional double 'handling surcharge' which is imposed by Royal Mail. All of that can almost double the purchase cost. But for users in the USA, or for those who can visit to collect a kit from a friend or relative, that purchase price is about right. I would expect a European manufacturer to make a compact kit which is as versatile as this one before long. The Chinese are very likely to be making them already.
Just a tip for really all of the tools, but especially the bypass knife: use them with the handle 90 degrees or so to the tool you're using, with your thumb resting on the top of the tool, in a kind of pistol grip of sorts. It adds tons of stability to things like jiggling or bypassing, and delivers more feedback when you pick
Very Nice! One suggestion for assembly. Place the 2 thin tools between the 2 jigglers to protect them. this is based on decades using feeler gauges. Always have a thick one on the outside to protect the really thin ones during opening and closing.
Excellent review. I love my Covert Companion. I’ve used it a couple of times in the wild. Once on a warded lock on a tool box at work and once to SPP an Abus on document destruction bin at work after decided I didn’t want to destroy the document I had just put in it. I was very proud doing the Abus in the wild (it was legal! It was my office.)
I love my Covert Companions! I have the main one with the main tools plus the turner tool expansion pack, SSF commercial door hook, lock harpoon expansion pack, and SSF Genesis 0.020" picks. The second Covert Companion has the scissors, multi-tool, padlock bypass driver, and extra picks. They are kept together with the Mag Connect. Both of them together fit in a pocket nicely. I use a penny on the screws instead of a screwdriver and the screws still look good.
Great thorough review Ash! I've had my covert companion for awhile now, added the turning tool expansion pack when it came out. Obviously its not like using our full size picks like we are accustomed to, but as a tool to keep on you daily for random situations, its very handy and effective! A bit pricey, but I've never regretted spending more on quality tools! 👍👍
I picked one of these up before he offered the turning tool expansion kits, and it is normally not a problem as you said this is "primarily a bypass kit." I love it. It is not cheap, as you said, but the amount of tools you can carry on your person is amazing. It's a lot of bang in a tiny package, and in my case I just rubber banded some tensioners together and kept them with it.
I was considering getting one of these as my first set of tools, but after seeing this, I think I'm going to pass for now and get a legit normal set to work with until I'm comfortable. I also like the idea from one of the other commenters about using heat shrink tubing where they dig into your fingers.
I know this is late but i would say to get one when you feel like or when its on sale becasue you could always get better but if for any reason they are gone no matter how good youd get you might not get one of them and i will from experience i am a moderately ok lock sport enthusiast as well as side job locksmith mostly to help out people or friends or family that i hear are having an issue i can solve i dont usually charge people unless it calls for it and thats usually just materials i might need to buy and or gas but when you have one in your hand its juat beautiful but also i knew it would be small but i do also feel like it was much smaller than expected but not in a real bad way just unexpected bottom line worth it lol
I started with the Genesis Set for the same reason. I have had the set approximately two months and feel comfortable enough to acquire a more advanced set. Covert Instruments hosts sales on July 4th and Black Friday.
If you want a set of lockpicking tools from Covert Instruments that fits in a pocket, I recommend the Slim Pickings set! The Covert Companion is full of bypass tools anyway--not very useful for any actual skilled picking.
Excellent review. I’ve had mine awhile now. I think it’s excellent for what it is. I don’t believe it’s meant to replace a full set of picks. It’s a great for edc/emergency and you can’t beat the size. Another great feature is that it’s modular and future expansions can include EU-centric thicknesses or whatever else you clever pickers desire or think of. 👍🏻😃
I added on the turning tool expansion set and the American Lock bypass driver on mine, and I swapped out the short and medium hooks for SouthOrd Jackknife short and medium hooks, with the medium hook being shortened to the same profile as a Peterson hook 7, and both being drilled out *slightly* to fit the mounting peg of the Covert Companion. The reason I did the hook swap was that while I use those hooks full size in my main kit, for a tiny pocket pick, I wanted more useful profiles, and they are 0.020," which was more to my liking as well.
I have owned one of these for a long time. I agree it is easy to use if your are sticking with the combs/wards but once you get to Single Pin Picking this is a pain especially if you do not know the lock. I would not use this for single pin picking on a new or difficult lock. Great review!
I think if there was a piece that stuck out to put leverage on the picks it would help tremendously. I have used it to single pin pick but it's "a just in case" type of deal.
I put some heat shrink tubing on the main pick and rake that I use to make them easier on my fingers. I placed them one on each side in between the lock harpoons.
This is my first message. I am a relatively new viewer and I love your channel! I'm a tech channel but you've inspired me to make a video or two about locks! (I am a COMPLETE noob!) I just received my covert companion (I bought the entire set and all expansions) .. I love it with one small exception. The picks are very small and my fingers cramp a bit when using them. I like a larger handle on the picks. Aside from that, its AMAZING. The COMBS make the entire set worth every penny! Thanks for the content man! Please keep it up!
I bought one of these a few months ago when i got into lockpicking. I jumped the gun as i was barely learning so found it kinda difficult to use. Now that i have a bit more experience i really see the value in it and glad i got one. I carry it with me literally everywhere i go and even though i have a separate kit the fact that i have the CC in my pocket allows me to get away fron having to use the kit in most situations. I personally love it. Nice review

@@Comment0815 he could very well be a professional lock picker which would mean that he picks locks for other people for money. If other people get locked out of a building, a car, a locker, etc, they can call people like this to help them gain access to their things.
I just purchased one today, it’s on sale for $70 USD. I added a dimple, and padlock bypass driver. I bought it specifically to use as a bypass tool only. I’ll probably never use the short and medium hook and just bring my genesis/southern specialties kit with me everywhere I go. I did forget to add the turning tool kit. Haha I have seen people really like the riv kit. So I MAY purchase it in the future. But I like spp with dedicated tools.

My covert companion is cool as hell and has every tool you can imagine but I gotta admit it’s real tough to spp with it. I’m going to order the .020 picks soon and hopefully they help a bit. I guess it just takes some getting used to and isn’t something you are going to be using on most locks as it’s mostly an emergency/edc tool. I got a pocket clip and mag fast for mine the accessories for keymate fit perfect. I also learned the hard way with the little screws but I also had the padlock tool to put on and wanted to use the key ring piece that came with it so it was difficult to find just the right amount of spacing and all that to keep it tight. I also didn’t notice at first that you only use one rubber grommet and my tensioners would stick. I should have done a bit of fitting and layout to start before I got it all together because it was a nightmare to add and subtract small parts. Bonus was I used the other screws to attach the belt/pocket clip so I didn’t lose any space inside. I’ll probably buy a second shell along with the .020 and hotel keys and split everything between two so I have 2 smaller sized well proportioned companions. Put the bypasses on one and picks/tools on other or something. That might make it easier to use for picking because my picks aren’t super tight and it’s so wide it looks like one of those old Swiss Army knives that were 6 inches thick(and that’s without the 4 .020 picks or the I think it’s 4 or 6 hotel keys that block access to a lock til you insert the tool which is another space). Overall love it and love the site it has great quality stuff that doesn’t kill you with prices. I LOVE the ergo tensioners for padlocks and anything else hand held.
Mine showed up today. 3 hours of picking I cannot get anything to open. You make it look so easy. My hands are cramped and I feel like banging my head against the wall.
Good video. Purchased mine recently with the expansion pack. A few disappointments were: Was hoping to use this as an everyday carry due to it's compactness, but I like the full size sets better and easier to use. Just like a swiss army knife that has all those tools, you wouldn't see a maintenance person or a carpenter use a swiss army knife. They would use individual/better/comfortable tools. The second was how much time you have to spends closing it up as picks overlap and jamb. To combat this problem, I went back to the bigger original screw, and purchased some small washers at a local hardware store to spread out the pick spacing a little more. Overall I'll just play with it more and see if it gets easier, or I'll just keep it as a back up and carry the bigger set.
This video just came across my feed. Nice review! I purchased one of these on one of CI’s holiday sales. It is absolutely my EDC, and is almost perfectly geared towards what I usually encounter, which are mostly bypassable locks. The addition of the decoder is by far the most useful thing for me in this set. I will say that I’ve used almost every grouping of tool on this in the field at some point. Also CI sells a small set of pliers for straightening the shim and decoder. Which conveniently fit in an empty slot in my electrician tool roll. Just my 2 cents.
Nice review and I like that you see it more as a 'bypass kit' than a SPP tool. Those female-threaded things are called "Chicago screws" in the US/ Canada. I like the concept and the quality plus a wide tool selection, yet as-shipped it's excessive. The difference between this and other 'jacknife' tools is that you can select what you want and leave the rest in the desk drawer; you're not stuck with only someone else's few favorite profiles like most 'jacknife' tools are. Now if it only had locking blades. Not a substitute for real tools but it's not meant to be, it's value is in it's handiness and with some simple alterations I think it will suit my needs far better than anything else in the 'jacknife' genre currently does.
I bought an Emkey key holder after watching LPL's video about hiding the bitting on your keys, pretty sure where his idea for the companion came from. For me personally I have the 4.95 USD warded set, used them on a bag of warded locks and that's it. Also bought the full set of combs from Southord, was able to open two puck locks with them but that was what was in my collection. I like the hooks, the traveler hook, rakes, and those tensioners are just perfect in the tool. I'd leave out the combs, and warded picks (I'm in the US, not that many warded locks left). Otherwise I like the compact design. Nice review, keep them coming.
My girlfriend bought me one for a present back when it came out and the tension bar expansion kit wasn't out yet so I had to assemble it twice lol. This is a spot on review 👍. I really liked how you took the time to display using the tools.
...ideas for improvements: have nirled screws on one side and screw heads the other side that fit in the handle in a way that you can tighten the nirled screws by hand easily. It would be handy to have a double ended decoder, notched on one end, pointed on the other, that was removable to enable better feedback.

I think your assessment is spot on. I have one with turning tools option like your. This tool complement with my Swick jackknife lock picks quite nicely.
*chuckles* Thank you for this review. I’m new to locksports and for about tens seconds had a fever dream about becoming a professional pen tester. I bought a CC first day… It is what it is. It’s a compromise like any other piece of “multi” equipment. Same kind of mentality as beginner wilderness survivalists “one tool that does everything, just not really well”. I appreciate the quality of the CC for what it is, an entry level, mall ninja, gimmick. Now I’m off to piece together a bypass kit from Peterson and RTA… and when I start going to meet ups for the local toool group… I’ll ask them what I should gear for picking specific. But the CC will still ride in my messenger bag in case I do a dumb and lock myself out of something or someplace and need a tool that’ll scrape by in a pinch.
I am new to lock picking and i thought this was a pretty good deal. I work in a place with a locker room so i wanted to do this as an alternative to bolt cutters. Would i need/want anything else for this kind of setting? May also need to open simple office doors every now and again
I only really use mine for the jiggle keys, combs and warded keys. I've used the picks but not enough really. I don't have the expansion yet. But I teach more and do more bypassing then picking these days.
I bought this set exactly as you did and I find it difficult to use as I am a beginner but I did get it for future use after using my sparrow set etc to learn.
A very big con is you have a lot of tools which can have the same function as the traveler hook (the 3 turningtools, the warded lockpick) and that makes the traveler hook obsolete. In The Netherlands there are no warded locks and just a view locks were you can use the comb picks. I'd like to have a covert companion more focused on the european market. For instance an expansion with medium jiggler keys for smaller wafer locks, a city rake and maybe a small flashlight to go at the side of the picks.
ive noticed when i assembled mine yesterday that the expansion is very stiff when closed, ive assembled it and reassembled it a few times, using the site blueprint, his video and yours but still once everything is closed, pushing on those 2 prongs just ends up hurting my thumb instead of swinging out the tensioners, im not sure if im missing somthing
I bought this set just after the expansion came available. I quite like it. Also got a hammerless door hinge removal and a stand alone traveler hook since i was paying for international shipping anyway. They live in my pocket for edc, that way my full set stays at my house unless i need it. I don't keep that in mu truck. No sense in giving theives more tools to break into more things.

I've had my set for a while now. It's amazing! My hands aren't great so I have a tough time with how you need to sort of use a pistol grip to hold it but that's not a knock against the tool, it's a knock against my maker. Definitely not a primary tool but it is a great all in one back up set.
Can you do a video where you use all these tools to pick various locks with various methods ? It would be AWESOME ! (I mean where you explain the technique on top of the demo you did here)
Just got mine today I do like it , find it a little tricky to use but eh what’s the only way to get better. Practice , but I do find that the picks rakes and stuff do stick and tug each other when being closed so closing it carefully is a must , but looking at LPL’s thumbnail it looks like we could flip tools to go inwards for the comb side plan to try doing than soon and I also installed one of the rakes backwards plan to fix that too , I did the same mistake as you though one side wouldn’t screw down completely to tighten the tools in place but after I fixed that it worked I also left my screws a little looser so that they can be separated without as much force :) hope that my input could help
The things the screws go into are known as Posts as a set they are Chicago screws or Book binder screws or even Sex bolts 😁 (yep genuine enginering term) for the issue with tool selection it would make sence to offer other tool baldes of differnt types so you can customise the carry to suit the individtual by swapping out tools this style of handle is perfect for that . you could also have a tool that is the ful length of the handle ie the SPP hook or knife so you have more fixed handle to grip this would lose a tool on the other side but may be acceptable . locking the tool or just haveing a stop so it cant over rotate (like a pen knife)and you can put pressure on in one direction wouldnt be to hard to design in
for someone who's always been curious about picking but have never attempted it i started recently looking for a set. i figured it was a better idea than using a large knife as a pry bar to open a locked door... don't judge me too harshly, i had a plethora of knives and not enough functional picking tools. i'd like to change that but this set seemed pretty expensive compared to other sets which typically had screw driver like handles and contained within a bag. this ones running around 120 ish with these turning hook things included and i'm setting alernative sets for like $30 but without the nice tiny little form factor. while i can tell you all kinds of differences between steel types and such i have no idea the types of thicknesses of these tools so have no ability to weigh in on whether the more expensive set by covert instruments is worth the increased price tag. any feedback or thoughts would be appreciated to help me get over that initial lock pick set search and into actually trying this stuff out.
Love mine. Took the dog out for a walk, wife closed the door to go to work, not realizing I didn’t have my keys. I was back in within five minutes, and replaced the lock an hour later…

There is a key loop included but I've struggled to find where to fit it and it not be in the way. I've had mine since Christmas and it's ok. I agree that it would benefit from some way of locking the tool in use ,maybe a sleeve you could slide off and swap round depending on which end the tool is your using??
It's a neat little set. I agree that the tension tool expansion is a great addition too. It's not a 'padlock shim', it's a 'handcuff shim' which isn't much use in real life these days, but it's still a handy gimmick for training cuffs. It's important to remember though, If you are in the UK and you get searched by the police and charged with 'going equipped' unless you can prove a genuine reason that you are carrying it, such as going to a lockpicking hobby club or going to help someone who can prove their ownership of whatever needs to be accessed. Saying that though, I've carried a standard handcuff key on my keyring for years and nobody seems to care.
Yes. You can only use the shim if the cuffs aren’t locked. And they’re probably going to be locked. So, it’s important to carry a semi-universal handcuff key.
I agree that it's not as well tailored to EU locks as maybe it could be, but I do think it is targeted at more US use. As for the picks, I might carry a couple of actual picks along with this - it even gives you tension tools - and just use it for its bypass functionality.
And you can leave out what you don't want, and put in extras of what you need 🤷🏻♂️ If you have an issue with assembling a tool in a way and order that suits you then you probably chose a wrong hobby

i have used mine extensively fir practice ... getting into locked out vehicles with the jigglers, use it everyday to unlock my door at home cuz im too lazy to replace my lost key 🤣🤣🤣 i agree with your assessment that for the money you are getting a lot of useful bang for your buck😁👍

Bleh. The problem with the covert companion is the steel. It is subpar. If it was all 301 high yield it would be worth it, but it isn’t even full hard steel. It’s the kind of junk HPC would use. Swick or preferably Entry Kit from tuff possum gear is MUCH better.
It is just a gimmick, a bit like a Swiss Army knife with every conceivable attachment. When I want a knife I want a blade, when I want a pick, same thing. Most people owning it will never use it in anger.
I highly disagree. I have owned mine for over a year and it actually is one of my most used pick set both for practice and real-world applications. I like that it's always with me ready to use. Gotten me out of a tight spot a few times
For me, this is a complete nightmare, Too bulky and trying to do to much. There is nothing that tool can do that a minimum standard HPC pick-set would not do with a couple of additions. The HPC would be similar in size, lighter, easier to use and a lot cheaper. It’s a gimmick aimed at people who like gimmicks. Reminds me of the Swiss Army knife that has about a hundred tools on it !!! Didn’t see you review the flashlight on it !!!
I disagree with your assessment entirely. This set is mainly beginner gimmicks, jigglers, combs, warded picks...all take up room that could have been used for better hooks and rakes. A serious picker does not bother with combs, and warded picks, the locks they work on are rare and low quality that are easily picked with good set of hooks. Only 2 wave rakes, a triple peak or a city rake would be much better. No way to lock picks open makes them difficult to use. A handcuff shim in a folding pocket set is ridiculous. How do you get it out of your pocket and opened if you're handcuffed? I noticed ALL of the locks you used for demonstration were easy beginners locks, how well would this set work on an 1100? I like the multiple turning tools, and decoding shim, but that is all. It is much larger and bulkier than most other jackknife or other style of EDC sets, and nothing to make it resemble anything other than what it is. The price is ridiculous, way over twice the cost of any other pocket set. That is typical of covert instruments, and one of the reasons I no longer subscribe to LPL channel. Ever since Harry opened his store, he stopped teaching me new tricks, and focuses more on using his advanced skill to promote his overpriced products. If someone serious wants a good everyday carry pocket set, there are many sets much better, much smaller, and much cheaper, available if you only browse around a bit. I am really quite surprised you had anything positive to say about this set.
My review isn’t about whether I personally want a bunch of bypass tools, it’s about given if you DO want bypass tools, are they effective? The answer is yes, This is OK for picks, but it’s definitely not really a ‘pick set’. As for beginner locks, I mostly just pick easy, recognisable locks to save time - it’s not about my picking skills it’s a quick demo of the tool. The handcuff shim is useful where someone else has got themselves stuck and it could also be used to front-shim a cheap lock also. I do agree there are better lock pick sets (which this isn’t) for the price and also for around the same price you could buy separate sets of bypass tools, but as a compact bypass tool set? Yeah it works pretty well despite some of the compromises made by the form factor. I actually have no need for it (I bought it only for review) but as you can read in the comments, people seem to like the ones they bought and I don’t begrudge them their choice nor do I begrudge your opinion of the tool; after all no one has to buy one of it doesn’t suit their needs
That guy is a scam artist. My cousin is a licensed locksmith and refuses to watch any of those videos. Lockpickglawyer really made a name by opening low security locks. Never tried any of the difficult ones. Sad too say we can't support anything he's involved with. Thank you for sharing your honest videos 😁

I could be wrong but I think this might be a great introductory tool for a first timer like me to get into this hobby despite the fact that it might be a little pricey in the eyes of someone experienced. The compromises on a compact set like this are inevitable. I would like to see a version which focuses on pure picking tools with a few rakes. Maybe two distinctly different sets would be very convenient. It should also be easy to add a few removable 'windscreen wiper' levers, which could 'spoon' together, to save space.
Price is a bugbear for people in Europe, however,mbecause of the postage costs, import duties/VAT, and in the UK there is the annoying additional double 'handling surcharge' which is imposed by Royal Mail. All of that can almost double the purchase cost. But for users in the USA, or for those who can visit to collect a kit from a friend or relative, that purchase price is about right.
I would expect a European manufacturer to make a compact kit which is as versatile as this one before long.
The Chinese are very likely to be making them already.

Just a tip for really all of the tools, but especially the bypass knife: use them with the handle 90 degrees or so to the tool you're using, with your thumb resting on the top of the tool, in a kind of pistol grip of sorts. It adds tons of stability to things like jiggling or bypassing, and delivers more feedback when you pick

Very Nice! One suggestion for assembly. Place the 2 thin tools between the 2 jigglers to protect them. this is based on decades using feeler gauges. Always have a thick one on the outside to protect the really thin ones during opening and closing.

Excellent review. I love my Covert Companion. I’ve used it a couple of times in the wild. Once on a warded lock on a tool box at work and once to SPP an Abus on document destruction bin at work after decided I didn’t want to destroy the document I had just put in it. I was very proud doing the Abus in the wild (it was legal! It was my office.)
I love my Covert Companions! I have the main one with the main tools plus the turner tool expansion pack, SSF commercial door hook, lock harpoon expansion pack, and SSF Genesis 0.020" picks. The second Covert Companion has the scissors, multi-tool, padlock bypass driver, and extra picks. They are kept together with the Mag Connect. Both of them together fit in a pocket nicely.
I use a penny on the screws instead of a screwdriver and the screws still look good.
Really appreciate your efforts to educate those of us who have an interest in these products and the challenges they address.

Great thorough review Ash! I've had my covert companion for awhile now, added the turning tool expansion pack when it came out. Obviously its not like using our full size picks like we are accustomed to, but as a tool to keep on you daily for random situations, its very handy and effective! A bit pricey, but I've never regretted spending more on quality tools! 👍👍
I picked one of these up before he offered the turning tool expansion kits, and it is normally not a problem as you said this is "primarily a bypass kit." I love it. It is not cheap, as you said, but the amount of tools you can carry on your person is amazing. It's a lot of bang in a tiny package, and in my case I just rubber banded some tensioners together and kept them with it.
I was considering getting one of these as my first set of tools, but after seeing this, I think I'm going to pass for now and get a legit normal set to work with until I'm comfortable. I also like the idea from one of the other commenters about using heat shrink tubing where they dig into your fingers.
I know this is late but i would say to get one when you feel like or when its on sale becasue you could always get better but if for any reason they are gone no matter how good youd get you might not get one of them and i will from experience i am a moderately ok lock sport enthusiast as well as side job locksmith mostly to help out people or friends or family that i hear are having an issue i can solve i dont usually charge people unless it calls for it and thats usually just materials i might need to buy and or gas but when you have one in your hand its juat beautiful but also i knew it would be small but i do also feel like it was much smaller than expected but not in a real bad way just unexpected bottom line worth it lol

If you want a set of lockpicking tools from Covert Instruments that fits in a pocket, I recommend the Slim Pickings set! The Covert Companion is full of bypass tools anyway--not very useful for any actual skilled picking.
Excellent review. I’ve had mine awhile now. I think it’s excellent for what it is. I don’t believe it’s meant to replace a full set of picks. It’s a great for edc/emergency and you can’t beat the size. Another great feature is that it’s modular and future expansions can include EU-centric thicknesses or whatever else you clever pickers desire or think of. 👍🏻😃
I added on the turning tool expansion set and the American Lock bypass driver on mine, and I swapped out the short and medium hooks for SouthOrd Jackknife short and medium hooks, with the medium hook being shortened to the same profile as a Peterson hook 7, and both being drilled out *slightly* to fit the mounting peg of the Covert Companion. The reason I did the hook swap was that while I use those hooks full size in my main kit, for a tiny pocket pick, I wanted more useful profiles, and they are 0.020," which was more to my liking as well.
I have owned one of these for a long time. I agree it is easy to use if your are sticking with the combs/wards but once you get to Single Pin Picking this is a pain especially if you do not know the lock. I would not use this for single pin picking on a new or difficult lock. Great review!
I think if there was a piece that stuck out to put leverage on the picks it would help tremendously. I have used it to single pin pick but it's "a just in case" type of deal.
I put some heat shrink tubing on the main pick and rake that I use to make them easier on my fingers. I placed them one on each side in between the lock harpoons.
Just bought one. So far so good! 🙂 I've been going through my stash of various locks trying it out. I'd say I opened about 75% of them with this tool.

I just received my covert companion (I bought the entire set and all expansions) .. I love it with one small exception. The picks are very small and my fingers cramp a bit when using them. I like a larger handle on the picks. Aside from that, its AMAZING. The COMBS make the entire set worth every penny! Thanks for the content man! Please keep it up!
I bought one of these a few months ago when i got into lockpicking. I jumped the gun as i was barely learning so found it kinda difficult to use. Now that i have a bit more experience i really see the value in it and glad i got one. I carry it with me literally everywhere i go and even though i have a separate kit the fact that i have the CC in my pocket allows me to get away fron having to use the kit in most situations. I personally love it. Nice review

I just purchased one today, it’s on sale for $70 USD. I added a dimple, and padlock bypass driver. I bought it specifically to use as a bypass tool only. I’ll probably never use the short and medium hook and just bring my genesis/southern specialties kit with me everywhere I go. I did forget to add the turning tool kit. Haha I have seen people really like the riv kit. So I MAY purchase it in the future. But I like spp with dedicated tools.

My covert companion is cool as hell and has every tool you can imagine but I gotta admit it’s real tough to spp with it. I’m going to order the .020 picks soon and hopefully they help a bit. I guess it just takes some getting used to and isn’t something you are going to be using on most locks as it’s mostly an emergency/edc tool. I got a pocket clip and mag fast for mine the accessories for keymate fit perfect. I also learned the hard way with the little screws but I also had the padlock tool to put on and wanted to use the key ring piece that came with it so it was difficult to find just the right amount of spacing and all that to keep it tight. I also didn’t notice at first that you only use one rubber grommet and my tensioners would stick. I should have done a bit of fitting and layout to start before I got it all together because it was a nightmare to add and subtract small parts. Bonus was I used the other screws to attach the belt/pocket clip so I didn’t lose any space inside. I’ll probably buy a second shell along with the .020 and hotel keys and split everything between two so I have 2 smaller sized well proportioned companions. Put the bypasses on one and picks/tools on other or something. That might make it easier to use for picking because my picks aren’t super tight and it’s so wide it looks like one of those old Swiss Army knives that were 6 inches thick(and that’s without the 4 .020 picks or the I think it’s 4 or 6 hotel keys that block access to a lock til you insert the tool which is another space). Overall love it and love the site it has great quality stuff that doesn’t kill you with prices. I LOVE the ergo tensioners for padlocks and anything else hand held.
Mine showed up today. 3 hours of picking I cannot get anything to open. You make it look so easy. My hands are cramped and I feel like banging my head against the wall.

Was hoping to use this as an everyday carry due to it's compactness, but I like the full size sets better and easier to use. Just like a swiss army knife that has all those tools, you wouldn't see a maintenance person or a carpenter use a swiss army knife. They would use individual/better/comfortable tools.
The second was how much time you have to spends closing it up as picks overlap and jamb. To combat this problem, I went back to the bigger original screw, and purchased some small washers at a local hardware store to spread out the pick spacing a little more.
Overall I'll just play with it more and see if it gets easier, or I'll just keep it as a back up and carry the bigger set.
I also found the spacing and initial straightness of the picks to be janky.... Will go grab some little washers, great idea!
This video just came across my feed. Nice review! I purchased one of these on one of CI’s holiday sales. It is absolutely my EDC, and is almost perfectly geared towards what I usually encounter, which are mostly bypassable locks. The addition of the decoder is by far the most useful thing for me in this set. I will say that I’ve used almost every grouping of tool on this in the field at some point. Also CI sells a small set of pliers for straightening the shim and decoder. Which conveniently fit in an empty slot in my electrician tool roll. Just my 2 cents.

Nice review and I like that you see it more as a 'bypass kit' than a SPP tool. Those female-threaded things are called "Chicago screws" in the US/ Canada. I like the concept and the quality plus a wide tool selection, yet as-shipped it's excessive. The difference between this and other 'jacknife' tools is that you can select what you want and leave the rest in the desk drawer; you're not stuck with only someone else's few favorite profiles like most 'jacknife' tools are. Now if it only had locking blades.
Not a substitute for real tools but it's not meant to be, it's value is in it's handiness and with some simple alterations I think it will suit my needs far better than anything else in the 'jacknife' genre currently does.
Would be great if the blades locked.

I bought an Emkey key holder after watching LPL's video about hiding the bitting on your keys, pretty sure where his idea for the companion came from. For me personally I have the 4.95 USD warded set, used them on a bag of warded locks and that's it. Also bought the full set of combs from Southord, was able to open two puck locks with them but that was what was in my collection. I like the hooks, the traveler hook, rakes, and those tensioners are just perfect in the tool. I'd leave out the combs, and warded picks (I'm in the US, not that many warded locks left). Otherwise I like the compact design. Nice review, keep them coming.
My girlfriend bought me one for a present back when it came out and the tension bar expansion kit wasn't out yet so I had to assemble it twice lol. This is a spot on review 👍. I really liked how you took the time to display using the tools.
...ideas for improvements: have nirled screws on one side and screw heads the other side that fit in the handle in a way that you can tighten the nirled screws by hand easily. It would be handy to have a double ended decoder, notched on one end, pointed on the other, that was removable to enable better feedback.

It’s a compromise like any other piece of “multi” equipment. Same kind of mentality as beginner wilderness survivalists “one tool that does everything, just not really well”. I appreciate the quality of the CC for what it is, an entry level, mall ninja, gimmick.
Now I’m off to piece together a bypass kit from Peterson and RTA… and when I start going to meet ups for the local toool group… I’ll ask them what I should gear for picking specific.
But the CC will still ride in my messenger bag in case I do a dumb and lock myself out of something or someplace and need a tool that’ll scrape by in a pinch.
I am new to lock picking and i thought this was a pretty good deal. I work in a place with a locker room so i wanted to do this as an alternative to bolt cutters. Would i need/want anything else for this kind of setting? May also need to open simple office doors every now and again
I took out the SPP peices and rakes. It's a great Companion allright..... for Swick. I carry both at work. The compliment each other.
I only really use mine for the jiggle keys, combs and warded keys. I've used the picks but not enough really. I don't have the expansion yet. But I teach more and do more bypassing then picking these days.
I think the traveller's hook could be stronger but then again it is quite small. I now carry it with my Mad Bob's jackknife as a perfect companion! 😀

Very appropriate for first responders, breachers,etc. Lightweight, quality material, range of tools, price is quite right.
I bought this set exactly as you did and I find it difficult to use as I am a beginner but I did get it for future use after using my sparrow set etc to learn.

A very big con is you have a lot of tools which can have the same function as the traveler hook (the 3 turningtools, the warded lockpick) and that makes the traveler hook obsolete.
In The Netherlands there are no warded locks and just a view locks were you can use the comb picks. I'd like to have a covert companion more focused on the european market.
For instance an expansion with medium jiggler keys for smaller wafer locks, a city rake and maybe a small flashlight to go at the side of the picks.
ive noticed when i assembled mine yesterday that the expansion is very stiff when closed, ive assembled it and reassembled it a few times, using the site blueprint, his video and yours but still once everything is closed, pushing on those 2 prongs just ends up hurting my thumb instead of swinging out the tensioners, im not sure if im missing somthing
I just recived my Covert Companion and I think your review is spot on.
I own the set as well and the only issue I have with it is that it was not made in the U.S. it is however, very durable and nicely put together.

I bought this set just after the expansion came available. I quite like it. Also got a hammerless door hinge removal and a stand alone traveler hook since i was paying for international shipping anyway. They live in my pocket for edc, that way my full set stays at my house unless i need it. I don't keep that in mu truck. No sense in giving theives more tools to break into more things.

I've had my set for a while now. It's amazing! My hands aren't great so I have a tough time with how you need to sort of use a pistol grip to hold it but that's not a knock against the tool, it's a knock against my maker. Definitely not a primary tool but it is a great all in one back up set.
Can you do a video where you use all these tools to pick various locks with various methods ? It would be AWESOME ! (I mean where you explain the technique on top of the demo you did here)

Just got mine today I do like it , find it a little tricky to use but eh what’s the only way to get better. Practice , but I do find that the picks rakes and stuff do stick and tug each other when being closed so closing it carefully is a must , but looking at LPL’s thumbnail it looks like we could flip tools to go inwards for the comb side plan to try doing than soon and I also installed one of the rakes backwards plan to fix that too , I did the same mistake as you though one side wouldn’t screw down completely to tighten the tools in place but after I fixed that it worked I also left my screws a little looser so that they can be separated without as much force :) hope that my input could help
P.S I also got the bypass tool as well
The things the screws go into are known as Posts as a set they are Chicago screws or Book binder screws or even Sex bolts 😁 (yep genuine enginering term)
for the issue with tool selection it would make sence to offer other tool baldes of differnt types so you can customise the carry to suit the individtual by swapping out tools this style of handle is perfect for that . you could also have a tool that is the ful length of the handle ie the SPP hook or knife so you have more fixed handle to grip this would lose a tool on the other side but may be acceptable . locking the tool or just haveing a stop so it cant over rotate (like a pen knife)and you can put pressure on in one direction wouldnt be to hard to design in

for someone who's always been curious about picking but have never attempted it i started recently looking for a set. i figured it was a better idea than using a large knife as a pry bar to open a locked door... don't judge me too harshly, i had a plethora of knives and not enough functional picking tools. i'd like to change that but this set seemed pretty expensive compared to other sets which typically had screw driver like handles and contained within a bag. this ones running around 120 ish with these turning hook things included and i'm setting alernative sets for like $30 but without the nice tiny little form factor. while i can tell you all kinds of differences between steel types and such i have no idea the types of thicknesses of these tools so have no ability to weigh in on whether the more expensive set by covert instruments is worth the increased price tag. any feedback or thoughts would be appreciated to help me get over that initial lock pick set search and into actually trying this stuff out.
Love mine. Took the dog out for a walk, wife closed the door to go to work, not realizing I didn’t have my keys. I was back in within five minutes, and replaced the lock an hour later…

Just Don't like that it comes disassembled..& a bit pricey. I would also add a Pocket Clip & Keychain ring or Carabiner 4 EDC Storage on your person.
There is a key loop included but I've struggled to find where to fit it and it not be in the way.
I've had mine since Christmas and it's ok.
I agree that it would benefit from some way of locking the tool in use ,maybe a sleeve you could slide off and swap round depending on which end the tool is your using??

It's a neat little set. I agree that the tension tool expansion is a great addition too. It's not a 'padlock shim', it's a 'handcuff shim' which isn't much use in real life these days, but it's still a handy gimmick for training cuffs. It's important to remember though, If you are in the UK and you get searched by the police and charged with 'going equipped' unless you can prove a genuine reason that you are carrying it, such as going to a lockpicking hobby club or going to help someone who can prove their ownership of whatever needs to be accessed. Saying that though, I've carried a standard handcuff key on my keyring for years and nobody seems to care.

Yes. You can only use the shim if the cuffs aren’t locked. And they’re probably going to be locked. So, it’s important to carry a semi-universal handcuff key.
I agree that it's not as well tailored to EU locks as maybe it could be, but I do think it is targeted at more US use.
As for the picks, I might carry a couple of actual picks along with this - it even gives you tension tools - and just use it for its bypass functionality.

Bleh. The problem with the covert companion is the steel. It is subpar. If it was all 301 high yield it would be worth it, but it isn’t even full hard steel. It’s the kind of junk HPC would use. Swick or preferably Entry Kit from tuff possum gear is MUCH better.
It is just a gimmick, a bit like a Swiss Army knife with every conceivable attachment. When I want a knife I want a blade, when I want a pick, same thing. Most people owning it will never use it in anger.
I highly disagree. I have owned mine for over a year and it actually is one of my most used pick set both for practice and real-world applications. I like that it's always with me ready to use. Gotten me out of a tight spot a few times

For me, this is a complete nightmare, Too bulky and trying to do to much. There is nothing that tool can do that a minimum standard HPC pick-set would not do with a couple of additions. The HPC would be similar in size, lighter, easier to use and a lot cheaper. It’s a gimmick aimed at people who like gimmicks. I disagree with your assessment entirely.
This set is mainly beginner gimmicks, jigglers, combs, warded picks...all take up room that could have been used for better hooks and rakes. A serious picker does not bother with combs, and warded picks, the locks they work on are rare and low quality that are easily picked with good set of hooks. Only 2 wave rakes, a triple peak or a city rake would be much better. No way to lock picks open makes them difficult to use. A handcuff shim in a folding pocket set is ridiculous. How do you get it out of your pocket and opened if you're handcuffed? I noticed ALL of the locks you used for demonstration were easy beginners locks, how well would this set work on an 1100? I like the multiple turning tools, and decoding shim, but that is all. It is much larger and bulkier than most other jackknife or other style of EDC sets, and nothing to make it resemble anything other than what it is. The price is ridiculous, way over twice the cost of any other pocket set. That is typical of covert instruments, and one of the reasons I no longer subscribe to LPL channel. Ever since Harry opened his store, he stopped teaching me new tricks, and focuses more on using his advanced skill to promote his overpriced products.
If someone serious wants a good everyday carry pocket set, there are many sets much better, much smaller, and much cheaper, available if you only browse around a bit.

My review isn’t about whether I personally want a bunch of bypass tools, it’s about given if you DO want bypass tools, are they effective? The answer is yes, This is OK for picks, but it’s definitely not really a ‘pick set’. As for beginner locks, I mostly just pick easy, recognisable locks to save time - it’s not about my picking skills it’s a quick demo of the tool. The handcuff shim is useful where someone else has got themselves stuck and it could also be used to front-shim a cheap lock also. I do agree there are better lock pick sets (which this isn’t) for the price and also for around the same price you could buy separate sets of bypass tools, but as a compact bypass tool set? Yeah it works pretty well despite some of the compromises made by the form factor. I actually have no need for it (I bought it only for review) but as you can read in the comments, people seem to like the ones they bought and I don’t begrudge them their choice nor do I begrudge your opinion of the tool; after all no one has to buy one of it doesn’t suit their needs
That guy is a scam artist. My cousin is a licensed locksmith and refuses to watch any of those videos.
Lockpickglawyer really made a name by opening low security locks. Never tried any of the difficult ones.
Sad too say we can't support anything he's involved with.
