    This exclusion of local Jamaicans from the Beaches around the Island has been going on for over the past 50 years.
    I remember when Ocho Rios was basically a Fishing Village
    Fisherman Beach area is basically gone
    I was sitting on Whitehorse Beach about 35 years ago with a local Fisherman was lamenting about a Guy who had just purchased an adjacent and blocked off access to the seaside.
    It has gotten worse over the years.

      If it had continued to be a fishing village then there would be no beach for them to argue about. Check out the beaches on all fishing villages, they are all ruined because they over fish and even when the government give restriction on parrot fish and lobsters that are a big part of why our coral reefs and beaches are so pretty, the locals ignore those rules and still fish them all year round.
      A perfect example of that is the Helshire strip in portmore. That whole strip used to be so beautiful now it’s ruined because of the fishing. The only 2 beaches that still have some type of beautiful look is Fort Clarence beach and waves beach. Why u may ask? Because they were privatized by local investors.

      @mrgooding2840 That might have been your experience, but certainly not for most Jamaicans. I have never been poorly treated to access a beach in Jamaica, especially since there are so many free access ones, so who would treat you badly? If you go to Negril, our longest and maybe even best beach, you enter free. Every parish has at least two free access beaches. The paid beaches are mostly in tourist areas and except for Puerto Seco in St. Ann and Frenchmen in Portie, entrance cost is usually under J$1000 (US$6), usually half of that, in fact. That contributes to establishing and maintaining bathroom facilities, changing rooms, lifeguards, cleaning seaweed and garbage, etc.

  • @ehites
    @ehites 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Having been deeply involved in environmental issues and the potential for ecotourism specifically in Jamaica for over 35 years, I fully support the fact that change needs to happen in respect of citizen beach access. The issue is, however, complicated. There are certain areas of Jamaica that are extremely fragile, for instance riparian ecosystems, especially smaller rivers, where too many people visiting or utilising certain areas will do irreparable harm to the plant, animal/bird life. There is no discussion here of the fact that Jamaica is the most overfished country in the Caribbean with an estimate 20 years ago of 80-90% of the coastal fishery being "fished out" and the entire fishery teetering on collapse (and thus marine sanctuaries with enforcement being key to their survival). Thus fishing beaches and fishers need to be much better managed, self managed (by fishers as well) and limited. Solid waste is also a huge issue - both trash and sewage. The very few pristine areas that remain are under threat, and the rest of Jamaica's coasts and rivers often look like a trash heap after a rain or storm. JET tried hard to get recycling going but it is still not viable on scale. And going back to the 80's to present, the anti-litter campaigns, (and anti harassment also) have not had a broad impact. And lest we forget Jamaica's biggest nemesis - crime, which is rampant on certain beaches and in tourism centres, and takes place in both crowded and remote places. Visitors being robbed at gun point or (fishing) spear gun point, which happens all too often, is not a good look for the country and is a terrifying experience to the victims. All inclusives have taken away the ability for locals to benefit from tourism, and the foreign hotel chains are simply there to extract wealth. In no way are they required to pay their fair share of "economic rents", (Nor are cruise ships, for that matter). Needless to say there are dozens of factors that must be explored, often specific to particular beaches (or areas) in order to resolve the citizen access issue. There is NO one size fits all solution.

    I remember in my early teens in the mid-1980s going to the beach in Mombasa, Kenya, a former British colony, and not being allowed into the gate let alone to use any of its services even if I wanted to pay for them. If I was white, no questions were asked and the gates were opened. It was only because my father knew someone working inside a store at the hotel that allowed me to visit the beach at one of the hotels, and my access was only limited to that one. From there I could walk along the beach and see the other hotels, but I could not go inside them or buy a soft-drink in the hot weather. This particular hotel that I used to go to access the beach later on changed its policies and allowed the local people to come use its restaurant and facilities. Interestingly, when the bad economic times hit in the early 2000s, this hotel was the only one that survived: it had local customers when tourists avoided Kenya in general. The other hotels went bankrupt and closed.

    বাংলাদেশ পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম খাগড়াছড়ির বর্তমান পরিস্থিতি খুবই খারাপ কারন এখানে বহিরাগত সেটেলার বাঙ্গালিরা নিরীহ স্থানীয় আদিবাসীদের ঘর বাড়ি আগুনে পুড়িয়ে দেয়। গতকাল ১৯/০৯/২৪ বৃহস্পতিবার রাতে সেনাবাহিনী হামলা করে নিরীহ স্থানীয় আদিবাসীদের যার ফলে অনেকের প্রাণ হানে ঘটেছে ✊😭

    There is plenty of private beach access in Florida. When they are on the islands they can interact with islanders.

    Mexico's Playa Del Carmen has open access beach (between hotels and the ends of strips, from what i remember). This needs to be the case for JA. Let the people live and make money!

    Too much. How is it ? Jamaicans must get the access, maybe limited but cannot be denied like this.

      Build swimming pools with what? Where?
      Those foreign investors have taken their livelihoods and their land away.
      And you think it’s funny.
