    I am inspired and my thanks go out to these amazing people. I have been looking for a while to find the simplest way to give one person the opportunity to drink the best water, which can be produced without electricity, inclusions and not a rain water tank. This must be it! So I will give it a go. ...... Thank you and You Tube for sharing your expertise. Water for one. A simple project for a tiny back yard, with great expectations.

After watching your awesome project at the Atacama, I can only hope that we can work together to bring your Foundation to Colombia, where we too, have a terrible dessert, where children are dying of hunger and thirst. Hi this project has been a wonderful boon to many people around the globe, but may I suggest you look at the videos of Ascension Island where the Victorians planted the slopes of the dead volcano with very specific trees and other plants to catch the fog, where there was once barren rock and ash there is now a forest with springs and a great deal of wild life this approach may be more beneficial in the long term or even a mix of both systems.

    As those trees grow, they will become another fog net. This will create a feed back loop, allowing the desert to be reclaimed. So fortunate this region has the fog. Otherwise, water from air devices wouldn't be practical. Wonderful!

    Your method is really ingenious. You guys need to get together with some permiculture experts like Geoff Lawton for other ideas in water collection and soil development. I think there's always room for improvement of ideas. Who knows, maybe you could change the whole ecosystem of that area. Desertification is a big problem very few governments want to discuss or solve. And the poor will always pay the price figuratively and literally. Great work. Please keep it up.

    Very interesting!! I tried to figure out if it’s economically suitable with data from the net.
    If the fog mesh wrings 10 - 20 percent of the water out of the mist, one large fog collector with a 40 m2 collecting surface, will typically produce an average of 200 L per day throughout the year. On some days no water is produced. On other days as much as 1000 L will be generated. The variability depends on the site.
    Fog harvesting yields from 1 to 3 Liter of water daily per m², depending of the location. There has been some research here in Germany and they are saying that the perfect mesh can theoretically wring out 50 percent of the water. So there is lot more possible. A 3m high perimeter fencing and about 30m long can catch 180liter of water a day on average. The net is at least working for 5
    Costs are variable depending on location, access and whether all labor costs are donated. The large 40 m2 fog collectors cost about $1000 to $1500 US each and can last 10 years. A small village project producing about 2000 L a day will cost about $15,000 US and can last for at least 10 years. Scalation in production and new building technics should cut half of this price.
    So on average you have to pay in 2015 about 2$ per m³ (1000L). Better materials could reduce it to 1$. Cool thing.

    • @CreatingWater
      @CreatingWater  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alexander Karl Thanks Alexander for the insight!
      Your numbers are correct and in line with our results.
      Our fog collectors will be cheaper though so we can cut the costs to around $1-1,50 per m3.
      How are you affiliated with fog nets?
      Kind regards,
      Creating Water

    • @Atanjeo1
      @Atanjeo1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Creating Water Foundation Hi! Once I have been part of a reforestation project in Spain. That’s why I am very interested in this topic. With fog nets i have no experience. Just some internet research.
      Question:
      What do you think about planting forests that are specialized for catching humidity from the air?
      The coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and especially the Pinus canariensis have evolved very long needles specifically to harvest fog.
      According to german Wikipedia the grown up Pinus canariensis harvests on average 50 l/m² DAILY and only needs 1/3 of it. On a km² (~35.000 trees needed), that’s about ~30.000m² of water going into the ground watershed daily. There you can get it by groundwater pumping up.
      I found also a lot of more info in “Plants at the Margin: Ecological Limits and Climate Change” by google book: Even a Nine years old Pinus Canar. Forest is able to harvest 500mm/m² a year throughfall out of the fog in northern Canary.
      In one of your first Videos you mentioned the Groasis Waterboxx. So it seems you already made some experience with that idea?
      Beside that there are some other trees able to catch fog in bigger amounts: Acacia macracantha, and the fast growing Eucalyptus and Casuarina. Between the trees you could plant the bushes Eugenia and caesalpinia tinctoria. They are fast growing and good for animal feeding. AND then there is the Namib desert grass Stipagrostis sabulicola. It's able to irrigate itself with fog water and it puts about 4l/day to the ground in the hotter Namib. This grass is a perfect material for Permaculture Greening and even building Material. There are also some good working endemic plants in the Atacama.
      I have also read that a long time ago before human influence there had been a lot of trees in Atacama.
