    Brickey is exactly right in describing the best case scenario of Cars replacing Rivers of America being something like how Grizzly River Run sits in DCA. He is right that when you walk around the perimeter of that 4 acre attraction, it feels like wilderness and intimate in areas. That is possible IF they block the views of the cartoony cars (and frankly blocking the view of various Frontierland attractions and building for the riders on the Cars attraction is equally important).
    It's quite possible that the overhead rendering Disney released was a mistake (kind of like their disastrous POV of Tiana's), that it showed a fear-inducing, worst-case-scenario-inspiring view of Cars in Frontierland by showing a drone view no guest will ever actually see. If they release renderings of the "street view" at various places in Frontierland and you see rock work and waterfalls -- and no cars -- that could go a long way in calming this issue down.

  • @EEvtg
    @EEvtg 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The biggest problem with Cars Land at MK is that it removes the last natural beauty and vibes (rip rose garden), and it makes no sense thematically alongside the strip of Frontierland and Liberty Square.
    Your gonna get off an old west mine train at Big Thunder, and 50ft away you will see TVs and living modern cars? It seems impossible to separate the themes well from what will remain of that existing Frontier strip... It's not enough space... hopefully they prove me wrong

  • @EEvtg
    @EEvtg 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The idea of tropical Americas fits perfectly, as long as they add an animal trail! (they won't😪)... I think most fans would prefer they just overhaul Dinosaur instead of Indy though, it could work in any land within that park, but alas, it's not "relevant" IP...
    I'm kinda surprised they're going with Indiana Jones too since the recent movie flopped pretty bad.

    I've come to terms with losing the riverboat and island in MK. I'll miss it, but I'm hopeful the Cars area will still feature enough natural beauty in its design to not ruin the vibe around Mansion/Liberty Square/etc. The one "this feels wrong" thing I'm still hung up on is that Frontierland and the surrounding attractions very much evoke the past, and the Cars art they showed feels very modern. That seems a little tonally dissonant for Frontierland. But if they make it work, I'll be fine with it.

    • @Primogen16
      @Primogen16 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The area will look similar to Grizzly Peak at Disney California Adventure -- lots of rocks, pine trees, waterfalls, and streams. The building architecture will be the "parkitecture" style found in US National Parks.

    Somebody needs to argue to me "why" we cannot have BOTH, the Rivers...and...Cars, "together" at the same time. "Why" MUST Cars go on top of the Rivers?? "Why" is the River the ONLY place that Cars can go?? (Any other land is impossible) Until then...leave the River alone and build Cars in another place. We CAN have BOTH!

    • @Primogen16
      @Primogen16 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      You got it backwards. They're not getting rid of the River because they desperately wanted the River. They put in Cars to fill up the space when the River was taken out. Park operations has wanted to get rid of the River for a long time. It hurts guest flow because of the dead ends at Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain. It is also a headache and expensive to maintain, especially after a storm. The river bed is in especially bad shape, and it's not worth fixing it for two attractions that few guests actually use. So... Villains land is going in the northern 2/3 of the river area, and Disney picked Cars for the lower-third -- mainly because they sell so much Cars merchandise in Cars Land in California.

      The reason why you can’t have both basically comes down to one word - “MONEY”. Disney is a business and they need to make all areas of their existing parks profitable first (unlike RoA). The “land for expansion” is worth millions sitting vacant, and who says it will be used for park attractions and not just more hotels, businesses, and DVC?

      @@WrongsGoneRon - Rivers of America has been therr FOREVER. It has never "stopped" them from makes zillions. Have plants and grass and flowers that need plenty of budget to maintain does NOT generate profit? Does that mean Disney should scrap every park feature that does not directly make money? Invest in the island and make it a bigger attraction and mars Cars on an empty part of land that makes ZERO money today.

    16:47 we don’t need to get rid of rides at DCA to bring new rides. We need additional rides in addition to what is already there because we need more people eaters. I don’t understand why they want to get rid of rides especially ones that aren’t part of the cheap pier rides. I like to do grizzly river run and then do Incredicoaster which dries me off very fast.

      Yes, the Boneyard is a huge favorite with our kids! I hope that they can figure out a way to keep it or re-theme it because that place is always packed with families, esp. when the animals are hiding out for the day. They need to add some misting fans and more shade over the seating areas, though. WDW parks have so much wasted space, they could easily wedge a few more playgrounds like the Boneyard or the Dumbo playground or Big Top splash pad in every park. That would be a big help for families and give people something to do that doesn’t require a line, which is especially important for little kids!

    Talking about the horseman, right before Covid they had an event for a couple years at Fort Wilderness called the return to sleepy hollow. They screened the old cartoon in the barn among the horses and you would get an exclusive pin and snacks and such. A dessert party was added the final year in the blacksmith’s shop before the movie, and it was so much fun! After the movie there was always a photo op with the actual headless horseman on his horse. We have been dying for them to bring that back.

  • @EEvtg

    Agree Tom! I'm very sad about It's Tough to be a Bug leaving... Disney needs to update opening day attractions instead of replacing them entirely.
    There's too much lazy IP replacement in general for Imagineering to be in a true "golden age", and even worse, these IP reliant replacements are being built with zero regard for thematic integrity! Zootopia makes no sense in the Tree of Life, and the proposed Cars Land is another perfect example...

    • @EEvtg
      @EEvtg 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I hope the non-roller coaster attraction in Villains Land is the Shanghai Pirates ride system. Floating over dark, treacherous water will capture the forbidding mood more than a dry ride system. And things can rise out of the water around our vehicle, like crocodiles, sharp shards of rock, Ursula...or we can float into things like the whale's mouth on Disneyland's Storybook Canal Boats but more animated and ominous. They could have a thunder storm with pouring rain in which the rain magically falls all around us as we move through the room but not directly on top of us. The potential for a "greatest dark ride" ever exists here.

  • @craigsvonkin6710
    @craigsvonkin6710 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Thanks for an interesting discussion. A few thoughts:
    1. Just because the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer's Island at the Magic Kingdom don't work right now, and need renovation, doesn't mean you plop a sentient car area in Frontierland. First, don't get rid of a huge water feature. Second, don't ruin the thematic logic of the park by putting cartoon cars in the land that is designed to be the western historical frontier. If this space is too valuable to leave as is, then rethink Tom Sawyer's Island, and rethink the river. First, bring back the canoes. Second, put themed things to see from the Riverboat: animals, or cowboys, or western legends. Add a second sort of boat on the river. Keep the river but put a ride where Tom Sawyer's Island is, like that geyser mountain ride planned but never built for Disneyland, or that unbuilt Young Indiana Jones stunt show (for Disneyland), or a western-themed ropes course similar to that built in Shanghai, or a western legends ride (Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, and John Henry), or a bayous and New Orleans area (with a tunnel or bridge over or under the river), or something exciting that isn't tied to modern IP, like a steampunk balloon ride over the American countryside. People would still like an American west area if Disney were to build something cool there. And talking cars are cool--I love the Cars Land at DCA. But they just don't fit a western, frontier, past thematic area. Destroying the west and the river for cars, that is a huge loss to the thematic logic of the park. And the fact that the space is underutilized doesn't mean that you gut the theme entirely and gut the thematic spatial logic of the park. The Imagineers are creative, plus there are great older Imagineers who could be brought in to come up with a great ride to revitalize the area. Hire Eddie Sotto. He had his start at Knott's, where he designed an expensive flooded town river rapids ride. Heck, hire Eddie, give him a huge budget, and he could revitalize the area, keep a river, and keep the frontier or west in the area.
    2. I think that doing a Walt Disney animatronic show is an interesting idea. But given that the theater is usually empty for Lincoln, I fear that having a mostly empty theater for a Walt Disney show, which will quickly happen given the cultural realities, will send a sad message. If Disney were to make the theater much smaller, which they should (perhaps down from 500 to closer to 250), using the extra space for more exhibition space about Disney and Disneyland, then I'd be fine with this idea.
    3. There is space behind the Incredicoater for a dark ride. I'm pretty sure that's where Coco is going. I hope they retheme the space between Goofy's Sky School wild mouse rollercoaster and the Paradise Gardens food court area as a Coco Mexico area. California was part of Mexico for a long, long time. Heck, that would even fit the mostly-ignored California theme.
    4. I am hoping that Disney will be putting some real animals in the new Indiana Jones/Encanto Latin American area. A trail with llamas and capybara would be cool. Perhaps a South American, Incan-themed area could combine an Emperor's New Groove ride or show with a Peruvian animal trail where the Finding Dory theater is now.

      @WrongsGoneRon 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1. Nope, Cars sells merch and attracts park goers, rivers do neither. Cars is now multigenerational and it is set in the western USA. Kids (Disney’s target audience) want more Cars, not more rivers. WDW isn’t Knotts, the type of “river ride” you described makes sense for a company without Disney’s IP to leverage.

    I agree that there is danger of people not realizing Walt Disney was real. I think a lot of Disney fans buy into the mythology of Walt, (that he was a great dreamer and visionary etc) that they never stop to realize Walts context in the popular culture of the era. For most of America, Walt was a filmmaker with a Sunday night Television show. Not too dissimilar to Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock has had the benefit of his TV show being in perpetual reruns for the past half century, keeping his likeness tied to his brand. Where Disney's self imposed prestige of their back catalog of film and TV has backfired is that for almost two generations now, Walt has not been the face of his own products. I think the animatronic show, if done with tact and respect (which I think it will), will help at least introduce Walt as a real person and a Historical figure and not just someone whos name is associated with a brand or company ala Colonel Sanders.

    I've been listening to this in short bursts as I feed my infant son and pick up my 5 year old son from preschool and you all are spot on. When I think about the Magic Kingdom I want to take my 2 boys to in 5 years, would I rather take them to Tom Sawyer Island or a Cars land? The answer is easy. They wouldn't understand Frontierland as it currently exists. It will be MAGIC for them to race offroad on a Cars car.
    There are some things I think as a community we can fight against. I don't think this is one of them.

    The Minions ride cloning sucks, but tbf, Disney is doing the same thing with Frozen Ever After; That's a re-skinned old attraction that's being "cloned" too many times, even if it's with light improvements. Disney has become increasingly similar to Universal...

    Temple of Doom was DEFINITELY India. Notice how they were chanting to Kali Ma? That’s a Hindu deity but I have to say they TOTALLY mischaracterized how Kali would be praised. She was not for hateful sacrifices.
    Plus the architecture, decor, and accents? Cmon 🤘

    Very good points on the Rivers of America debate. I think the Cars stuff can be really well done and fitting the vibe of the land if done correctly, the only thing I'm worried about at this point is whether or not there will be significant water features and if they'll go through the effort of blocking the living cars from view in Liberty Square/by Haunted Mansion.
    Also another thing I haven't really seen anyone talk about- where's the Haunted Mansion's queue going? The concept art had a pathway paved over where the queue would be. I know concept art isn't 100% accurate, but if they do decide to put the path over the queue, where would they put the queue now? Behind the mansion?

    The Lion King FRANCHISE is Disney's highest grossing property of all time. (Depending on the metrics, its the highest grossing franchise... of any film... ever.) Including the Broadway musical, video games, sequels, albums... it's their workhorse. Its way overdue for a ride.
    I'm guessing they just didn't know what to do animatronic-wise until now?

    Something that few (if any) people are realizing or taking about: it’s also about providing an place for folks that suffer from anxiety and a bit of claustrophobia can go WITHIN the park and still enjoy it - collect themselves- and dive back in. Nobody is going to take an hour bus ride to the resorts when they want to maximize their day. Yes the area around grizzly peak is beautiful but it is definitely not a place to relax. What would be better imo, give us more and better reasons to use the existing space. We have room.

    Yeah! Two of my favorite Disney experience commentators! There are so many interesting ideas being passed around. I sure hope Disney listens.
    Oh, the Mexico City word for a street fair/market is a "tingais". A good tingais is just amazing, and the concept has been around for 400 years.
    Oh, and I'd like to point out that Tom Sawyer's Island used to be a gigantic playground, especially with all the tunnels from the fort, into the rock and out. My parents used to put us on the raft before dinner and wait on the land side, because they knew there was no other way to get out, and we would definitely come out hungry. Well, then, we'd take the tram back to the car and eat the sandwiches or tacos my Mom had made. No expensive park food for us! No pretzels or churros. But TSI was an amazing place to play.
    Ah, we led my Spanish-speaking grandmother in to see Abraham Lincoln, and she jumped when he stood up and started talking.
    Huh, I'll be back to see more.

    Westerns definitely were not "dead" when they were building MK. Less popular NOW, sure, but so is Main Street's theme.
    I could literally list a dozen hugely popular and acclaimed western films that released in the late 60s thru mid 70s.
    Ultimately Disney just wants to get away from the "controversial" real world theme in exchange for their own more child-friendly cartoon IPs with easy merch sales lol. It makes business sense, sure, but you can get rid of a lot of great lands at DisneySea with that (not in public conscious) justification too!

    Alright, i'm gonna keep saying this because I want some people to start getting on board with this idea. If they wanna change grizzly river to something that has an IP Make it wilderness explorer/ UP themed. They could put a bunch of cute little animatronics, or just some none moving statues along the route of all of the crew from UP And other wilderness explorers. They then in the gift shop could sell a bunch of UP themed stuff. They also could probably make a bunch of really cool Wilderness explorer ponchos that people would buy like crazy. They wouldn't have to do much, they literally just have to put stuff along the ride, and it would be great

    Love you guys- I follow both channels- BUT... Grizzly River is the literal, water soaked hill I will die on. I spent my 30's in a canoe on some of the actual rivers on the maps in the queue- and I LOVE that ride. To me the beauty of Disney parks is that there are so many ways to enjoy them. I'm in Nor Cal, I go every year; my favorite thing is to just let Disney surprise me and it never fails. ❤

    We also forget that the Disney standard is exceptionally high. Looking at the Mario land in Universal Hollywood, there's so many seemingly small lapses that Disney just wouldn't make like no real traffic flow and lack of food/drink except for the one restaurant which is overcrowded. It's an amazing land where you do want to spend a significant amount of time like Galaxies Edge but the first swing at it wasn't as well planned as Disney would have done.

    For the riverboat, could they not create the Liberty Belle restaurant docked at the dock, like Paddlefish at Disney Springs? The upper deck could be a lookout over the expanded Frontierland and the Haunted Mansion. Just sayin'.

    Regarding the Spaceship Earth lounge: it also wouldn't cost anything to have a few screens with the "choose your own adventure" ending of Horizons playing around the space.

    Is it that Imagineering has been lazy or that they’ve been stifled by budget cuts and restrictions on themes, IP, etc?

    • @Primogen16
      @Primogen16 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Imagineers are constrained by budget cuts, management's demand that all new attractions be based on IP's, various requests from Park Operations, etc. Imagineering doesn't get to do just whatever they want.
