I've had a pair of these for over 20 years that roll with my krieg, and they have never let me down in terms of combat use and are a great conversation piece in an army.
I feel the cyclops is great for all the reasons you listed, however dont discount the scions or ghosts because they can get the cheeky assassinate on lone operative characters when you draw that... tons of people are running assassins, inquisitors or lone demon characters. Most of which have lone operative, but that doesnt matter when you deepstrike with 12.... just food for thought
Played against a guard player at the Denver 40k tournament this weekend. He had 3 that he used for exactly this. Small enough to easily hide, not important enough to shoot when compared to the big leman russes he had and could give them OC with Duty and Honor which gave him some vital victory points to win
The thought of putting 1 in a chimera or be ready to pop up with a Hades Breaching Drill sounds interesting too, I may buy an extra chimaera just to have 1 with an openable rear and roll out a cyclops in a tournament... lol
If I have 25points left, I definitely take a Cyclops. But to compare them with the Ghosts or maybe a Callidus is bold indeed. 😂 Your arguments are valid, don't get me wrong but they are immensly easy to kill - just move 3" near them and they detonate. Furthermore you offer your opponent to take "bring them down" because you just added 2 vehicles worth 2 VP each to your already vehicle-rich list. It's good but I think only to fill a pointsgap with a unit that makes sense, not to really to be a substitute for Scions, an Assassine or the Ghosts
For anyone like me who feels a bit weird having a rolling bomb do actions, try running Servitors instead. At 35pts they are only a bit more expensive, but you still get a large savings and a few melee attacks if you need it.
I use the Rapier Laser Destroyer as a similar thing, at 35 points it’s a bit more expensive but it has oc1 allowing for the primary game, it’s regiment meaning it’s a cheap thing to target with fields of fire and two hard shots hitting on 5’s as it moves on might not be something to rely on but it can sometimes tip things in your favour especially if someone has left a lone operative guarding a home objective. It also has the grenade ability allowing the use of the grenade stratagem. The downside is it’s 10 points more expensive, not quite as tough and 2” slower. It can receive officer orders but that doesn’t mean much if it’s coming in from reserves.
Hi there, firstly, thank you so much for a great channel, you inspired me to build a new army, secondly I included these before you said, as there cheap and they are very mobile! 8" movement, also they can be carried in any transport lol, i only used them as a low lvl threat to opponent as in, if an enemy moves near you , they blow up, if you go to them they blow up, as you said they havn't got a down side, well thanks again for a great channel and great advise.
Remember your regimental enginseers are pseudo lone operatives who can give a vehicle a 4+invulnerable save, restore d3 wounds and perform an action every single turn.
Firstly, you disgrace us sir, you shame us sir! Secondly, love the channel and the videos! Your passion for the Guard is awesome and love the community! Thirdly, like many of the comments already I think scions and the ghosts are more multi role than the Cyclops so it’s not entirely about picking one or the other. Why not both. Finally, why not 3 cyclops instead of 2. Use 2 to drop into the backfield like you describe but the other one could help create backfield screening bubbles to prevent enemy reserves or as a fast(ish) front line screen on a flank. 8” plus advance isn’t too shabby. You could go crazy and order with Lord Solar for an extra 3” but that might be a bit of a waste of such a precious order 😂
Shout out too Guardsman Hanan for recommended your idea on the Cyclops a few weeks ago. And I’ve been hyped about them since. Just bought 2 of em today. So extra hyped now you put out a video on it today 😁
Hello! I know this doesnt pertain to the video, but I'm still a little fresh to the tabletop and was wondering what screening was. I've heard about it, but I'm not really familiar with it or deepstrike.
If my own understanding is correct, Screening is the practice of placing cheap, disposable units in positions where their main goal would be to deny the enemy movement and/or deepstrike spots, instead of actually shooting at them. Like placing an infantry squad far enough away from your main tanks to push the enemy away so he has to charge the infantry first before being able to reach the tanks, or so he has to deepstrike somewhere far off in disadvantageous position. Ideally you don't allow the enemy to come in from reserves anywhere but in their own deployment zone, or at least force them away from your valuable assets.
A little bigger than an epic scale Leman Russ. More like the old epic scale land raider. 3d Cults website has a file for this Cyclops that looks spot on for the Forge World model.
Hey Mordian! As a Guard specialist can you answer a fluff question ive had for a while? Why dont the Guard have automated fire support systems? An autocannon or heavy bolter attached to a cyclops for instance. Then equipped with automated aiming and firing. I have never seen automated shooters besided Tarantulas etc.
Usually, it's just more cost effective to shove that autocannon into the hands of a heavy weapon team. In the Guard, equipment is often worth more than the soldiers using them. Many worlds barely have the know-how to equip their regiments/pdf with firearms let alone build autonomous systems and even if they did, they are treading dangerous grounds with the Mechanicus who might cry AI.
cadian castellan (enhancment: drill commander) with ursla creed attached to a unit of 20 cadian shock troops 2 plasma 2 melta- 2 orders take aim and first rank fire second rank fire. criting on 5 for sustained hit 1 and lethals and can get a free fields or fire with creed. seems alright not sure how it would play out in an actual game.
Honestly, threatening mortal wounds is something that opponents with monsters, or elite infantry with invulnerable saves is a nice ace to hold up your sleeve. Sure you can charge that infantry squad and decimate that flank, but the Cyclops will find you!
Never underestimate 'low threat' units. Because they either do their job, or they take a round of shooting, both make up for their points. If they dedicate a bit of shooting to them it prevents them from shooting something more important
Hey there! Y'know, a Thought just came to me: What would happen if we combine 2 Forge World products into 1 NEW unit? Specifically, what if we combine the Cyclops demolition vehicle with another Forge World product, namely, the Tarantula remote sentry turret? Just exactly what would we get? Is this even possible? Would this contraption even be legal during legal Warhammer 40K tournaments? And how would such a contraption fare in such a tournament as used by Imperial Guard/Astra Militarum players? Just curious.
There's also less to remember with them, as you don't need to pick them up and back into reserve. I've seen a lot of players self gotcha with their jump about mission monkies.
I mean, a couple of lone commissars sounds a bit more affordable (and attainable)… maybe these commissars were “accidentally” dropped off at the “wrong LZ” 😉😂
This is exactly what i had been considering but didnt know if their 0 cp counted. Now if i could only figure out how to use them to screen for my apc's lol
I don’t get this. Strategic reserve seems so much more vulnerable, easier to screen - particularly T2. The footprint of 5 scions is pretty minimal and a spore mine / ripper swarm is almost zero. And you’ll have units in strat reserve if you have screening infantry. Why not use catachans scout forward T1 and then you’ll have free strat reserves with your move blocking. And both those options have OC so they help with missions that require taking certain objectives. I feel like if you looked at the mission deck the scions / catachans help with twice as many? And they bring plenty else for their extra points.
I also super appreciate the cyclops since them being able to score those secondaries frees up my fun units to do fun stuff than be forced to play secondaries went I wanted them to do funny or cool stuff
i think that gauns ghosts are still better because they not only can teleport for onjectives, they allso pack inti infantey firepower so htey can not onyl tleport behinf lines but also win skirmish gainst other objective holders as only scoring unit cyclops are probably better, but they can do more things
Id say a priest over a commissar, just cos they have a 4++ so might dodge the odd bullet. And are surprisingly punchy in handed (against chaff) I considered this tactic before, but rejected it because its an easy Assinate, so you give away the points you make!

Jesus christ never thought a 25pt grenade on tracks would would be one of our greatest units
Action monkies win games.
Even if all you do with it is sit it in a corner hoping for investigate signals its worth 50 points
Thankfully neither did gw when they priced it

Most of which have lone operative, but that doesnt matter when you deepstrike with 12.... just food for thought
There are plenty of 3rd party models for the Cyclops, too, just in case you're worried about FW ceasing production.
Don’t worry about it mordian, humans like u and I make mistakes, we’re imperfect, we’re not necrons
Played against a guard player at the Denver 40k tournament this weekend. He had 3 that he used for exactly this. Small enough to easily hide, not important enough to shoot when compared to the big leman russes he had and could give them OC with Duty and Honor which gave him some vital victory points to win
Did he give the order withbthe Lord Solar, cause as far as I can see they can't get orders from anyone else...
Yes from Lord Solar, it was within the 24in range @@mathiasmoller1989
The thought of putting 1 in a chimera or be ready to pop up with a Hades Breaching Drill sounds interesting too, I may buy an extra chimaera just to have 1 with an openable rear and roll out a cyclops in a tournament... lol

Super efficient at half the cost of scions. I just hope these survive the data slates.
I’ve been using these mobile explosives since the start of 9th, never once have they failed to deliber some wacky antics
For anyone like me who feels a bit weird having a rolling bomb do actions, try running Servitors instead.
At 35pts they are only a bit more expensive, but you still get a large savings and a few melee attacks if you need it.
I loved the sharpes rifles reference in the beginning.
I was just sitting here enjoying the video and saw some pictures of my models pop up in the sliedshow. That earned a like from me.

It's good to see Tom back on the channel... riding on the Cyclops in the opening video.

I thought I'd bring one for fun in a small tournament, glad to see I made the right choice.
I love the idea of tiny little tanks trundling around the battlefield with teleporting homing beacons strapped to them.
Firstly, you disgrace us sir, you shame us sir! Secondly, love the channel and the videos! Your passion for the Guard is awesome and love the community! Great strategic breakdown, but what is the model featured @ 24 secs, please enlighten.
Sneaky commissar hucking around a teleporter beacon behind enemy lines.
Shout out too Guardsman Hanan for recommended your idea on the Cyclops a few weeks ago. And I’ve been hyped about them since.

Even with the changes now in which it cannot score secondaries, it's still an adorable unit.
Love the cyclops, gotta pick some up for myself. Care to comment on the potential of stuffing a ton of them into a storm lord as a suicide swarm?
Does anyone know how the cyclops compares to an epic scale leman russ size wise? Cheers.
A little bigger than an epic scale Leman Russ. More like the old epic scale land raider. 3d Cults website has a file for this Cyclops that looks spot on for the Forge World model.

Should i paint them as catachan and or Krieg
Honestly, threatening mortal wounds is something that opponents with monsters, or elite infantry with invulnerable saves is a nice ace to hold up your sleeve. Sure you can charge that infantry squad and decimate that flank, but the Cyclops will find you!
Its like an rcxd from the black ops games, it would be a hilarious thing to use to take down a big monster
I love these, I have 3 proxies for them in my catachan army that are beast from catachan
7:05 Lijah Cuu approves
I think I'd always prefer Scions for a few cheeky plasma or melta shots, but this was a good case that you made.
Never underestimate 'low threat' units. Because they either do their job, or they take a round of shooting, both make up for their points. If they dedicate a bit of shooting to them it prevents them from shooting something more important

Advance around in cover to keep your engineseer shepherd on lone op
Does this thing have the regiment keyword?
I mean, a couple of lone commissars sounds a bit more affordable (and attainable)… maybe these commissars were “accidentally” dropped off at the “wrong LZ” 😉😂
Also it may not have deepstrike but an 8" move helps...
This is exactly what i had been considering but didnt know if their 0 cp counted. Now if i could only figure out how to use them to screen for my apc's lol
A man who loses the Cyclops value has no friends at court!

Cyclops is my favourite thing. It always seems to score a couple of points

as only scoring unit cyclops are probably better, but they can do more things
I was using these back in 2010. Amazing little things. Sadly I sold everything when we moved to our smallholding.
Sads
Possibly use epic land raiders to substitute! Or the new legion imperialis stuff!
individual ripper swams in tyranids do the same thing, on top of biovores lol
If it needs to move to score as well, it's not slow and has no shooting and cant charge so it'll always be advancing, so it's kinda zippy
Looking at them now I want stats for them in Epic and Adeptus Titanicus scale.
And i have those same decals. Think ima paint mine the same way lol
Finally! My 3 cyclopses will be useful!
Hey I got three of these :P Need to learn how to use them.

I currenty have a win/loss rate of 5 wins 1 loss with this list in this crusade. Not sure how yall competitive players would look at it tho.
The Valk has Totemic presence and both Cyclops do too😂
Never realised how cheeky these things are. I'm getting 4 😂
Instead of a Commissar, use a Demolition Specialist from Krieg squads. Also, there's Epic 30K tanks.
Great way to fill points, I wish I had some
Ya it’s not about what it says on the tin for this little guy, it was about being cheap and having a low profile on an objective.
Laughing at myself now. It's sounds right up there but wrong in the heart! 😊. I couldn't replace gaunts ghosts witn rc grenades. Emperor forbid! 😊
Id say a priest over a commissar, just cos they have a 4++ so might dodge the odd bullet. And are surprisingly punchy in handed (against chaff)
I considered this tactic before, but rejected it because its an easy Assinate, so you give away the points you make!
Justice for my smol boi
Tiny tank go brrrrrr.
wait astra militarum can deploy teleporters?! What?!
I use them to block the back field, let's see what the video says
200 points of cyclops
I used to run 12 of these with my Elysians, which granted them deepstrike...god it was glorious....now it's utter shit
You used to be able to take these in squads.
I just got this
LAMBAST THIS MAN!!! Shame on you.... shame!!
Hey mordian can we tone down the click bait titles just a smidge. I feel like I'm clicking on a Nigerian email 😂
