  • Figure skating can be a lonely sport, and some athletes feel as though they have to struggle alone. That’s how Jason Brown felt when he missed his chance to go to the 2018 Olympic Games. After hitting “rock bottom,” Brown took a big step: He restructured his whole community to help him make it to the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. In this episode of “The Mental Games,” we explore how an intentional, supportive community helps elite athletes - not to mention the rest of us - achieve the most ambitious goals.

Not only has he (for me personally) the most distinctive and sophisticated Short Program this season, which is one of my all time favorites. He always shows such a exceptional depth of expression and I was really happy to see more about him in this video! You Go, Jason! ⭐💪

There's the World Figure & Fancy Skating Championships. It's not an Olympic sport though.

He is such an exceptional skater, very unique and one of a kind. It’s so refreshing to see someone at this level in his sport come out and be this vulnerable.

I've always loved Jason I'm happy to see he has built a community around him that provides balance. I can see he is a lot more comfortable in the space he is in now.

I first loved and admired this young man through his smile and heart. After seeing this, it is his bravery and courage to share his pain with me and others that connects me to my own humanity when I cycle down. You are always an inspiration to so many people, Jason. May you not be burdened with that, though. Thanks.❤️🌹💕

Easy. When you see his outrageous scores at Olympics. And how he "wins" many guys who perform several quad jumps.

@@ptakowe2997 Ice skating is an ARTISTIC sport. It is dancing and expression on ice. If it was all about "jumping" then any idiot could do it. The judges know this..hence Jason's high scores. Too bad you don't.

He is so well-rounded and surrounded by people that love and support him. He loves what he does and puts his whole heart and soul into every program. I don't care about quad jumps. He is glorious to watch and his programs will never be forgotten.

The message of this video is very important. I am watching it long after the 2022 Olympics, where we all witnessed the effects of a complete lack of balance and support in the women's competition.

This was a really good thing to watch. Me as a fan can only sense or imagine how the athletes I like feel, but reality is another thing. When I say "I like them but I like it more when they are healthy and happy with what they are doing" I truly mean it, and by healthy I mean physically and mentally, cause whether they win or not, they are amazing people for me and I will always admire them for all their hard work. Many may say "he isn't a medal athlete" and then I think "but it is worth it to see him" the quality and good sport is more important than winning. Just my feeling about sports.
I already admire Jason so much, but now I feel like liking him a but more, he is an amazing guy!

This is an important watch for anyone. I can relate to this as a person who sometimes falls into the trap of allowing my happiness to be driven by external forces. I hope that Jason knows what an inspiration he is to others as both a skater and a good human being. He possesses the quality of human connection (both through his skating and who he is as a person) that is hard to come by. 💙 💙

Super fascinating, I feel like this happens to athletes and performers in every field at every competitive level. Decoupling self-worth and competitive drive seems so important not just for mental health but for the integrity of sports as a love of the game and not just staking personal value on winning or losing.

I sense you can now skate to express yourself … and where you place in a competition is a sideline. Sounds far more freeing.

I absolutely love this guy!! Beyond even his superlative talent and skills, he has the most exquisitely beautiful spirit. I’ve loved him since I first caught sight of him on the Centennial Park rink in our home town. I was there to watch my daughter in her skating lesson, but it was Jason I couldn’t take my eyes off of. He was with a different instructor, it looked like a semi-private lesson with another student, a little girl. I’d never seen a tiny child (he had to have been under the age of five) so completely at home on the ice. He was a natural! Years later, when he and my daughter were in the same high school, and he was beginning to receive widespread recognition as a champion figure skater I asked her about him. She said he was the nicest guy you’d ever want to meet, that he was warm and kind to everyone in school. I so believe that! Watching him in competitions, it so touches my heart that on top of all his talent, through his actions and gestures he bestows grace on everyone, his family and friends, his fans, his coach, and even the judges (directly in front of whom he gives some of his best, often playfully affectionate moves). He never leaves anyone out. On so many levels, Jason, you are a winner.
