Hey guys! So when I was in Japan in January I decided to get myself some prescription glasses - i've heard great things about getting glasses made in Japan, and the experience sure didn't disappoint! I visited a store called Jins in Shibuya because they have English speaking staff and a large selection of frames that are very affordable. There is also a chain of stores called Zeoff that is very popular too, and equally affordable, so i'd recommend checking out both if you're looking at getting glasses in Japan. I didn't know there was such a thing as same day prescription glasses, so this experience really surprised me!
This video is much shorter than my usual uploads and is more of a "Japan vlog" style - I feel kind of apprehensive uploading a video like this because i'm worried it isn't interesting enough! Hey guys! I filmed this video in January while I was in Japan (a lot of people are asking if i'm there right now during the Coronavirus outbreak, but I left right at the start of the outbreak). I haven't posted it until now because i've been really nervous that it's too short and not interesting enough! If you enjoy these shorter videos, please let me know!
A lot of people are asking what I think about travelling to Japan right now, and I wouldn't recommend booking any new holidays at the moment, however if you do have a holiday booked already, you might miss out on some things you want to see given the mass closures of popular tourist destinations. Here's some info I found online:
The situation is constantly evolving but as of 12 March 2020, The Department of Foreign Affairs declared Japan to be a Level 2: Exercise a high degree of caution. This warning doesn't mean you can't go, but that there are higher risks than you'd find in any Australian city. Also be aware that you will also be required to spend 14 days in quarantine in a designated facility if you arrive in Japan from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau or South Korea. Still keen to go? The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends taking the following precautions regardless of where you travel:
- Washing your hands with soap and water frequently. If soap is unavailable, use a hand sanitiser with a high alcohol content.
- Maintain at least a metre between yourself and anyone who appears to be ill, particularly those coughing or sneezing.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
- Practicing respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose when sneeze or coughing, disposing of tissues thoughtfully and washing your hands with soap and water immediately afterwards.
- Contacting the local health authorities immediately should you begin to feel unwell.

OH man I am JEALOUS. My glasses usually cost me like 500$ (converting the prices in Euros) and I don't even buy high-end glasses. (my prescription is like -8 so i need lightweight lenses, etc...makes it more expensive)

My sister is a -8 in one eye & -12 in the other. Her glasses are mostly covered by insurance but she has to pay for lenses out of pocket so they aren’t an inch thick.
Yes! I have this issue but my prescription is +6 so I have to get extra lens thinning and strong, thicc frames. It always turns out so expensive ;_;

My job is manufacturing lenses and 30 minutes is standard if they have your rx in finished lenses. My record is 8 minutes though 😁

Aerisoondingie that’s likely because the lab where they make the lenses is in a different country (usually places where labour is cheaper e.g. thailand or china) and they have to ship it back.
Yeah, people go to opticians that send away the glasses to get made and they don't realise they're waiting for the post. Any more than 24 hours is unreasonable.
i'm an optician in the US so seeing how much cost wise and how fast and what all they offered and how they did this is super fascinating to me. this video might seem boring to some people but if you make glasses or wear glasses this is actually super fascinating.

A month that's a long time in the States you can get your glasses from 1 hour to 2 weeks depending on how busy the place you go is. Most of the places that do 1 hour are change stores.

Kimberly S. Yikes I always had to wait at least 3 weeks for my glasses (usually took about a month), and I’ve lived all over the US. I figured that was just the normal wait time unless like you were just popping the lenses out and moving them to a new frame.

I am an Optician in the United States and I make glasses in 20-30 minutes for people daily! I love to be able to offer quick service to people! The machine you were looking into is called an autorefracter. It is not quite as accurate as a Dr doing it by hand, but it is usually very good. Your new glasses are super cute!

For anyone in the US who wears prescription glasses, I HIGHLY reccomend Zenni Optical!! I wear a high prescription and have always paid TONS for glasses, but Zenni is the only place I have found that I can get my prescription for under 150$!!!!!! For someone who has paid more than 500+ for one pair, being able to get not only 2 pairs of glasses and a set of prescription sunniest for under 300$ was INCREDIBLE!!!!!! so yeah, Zenni rocks!

As someone who wears glasses all day everyday because I have short vision THE HOUSE this really makes me wants to go to Japan to get cheaper glasses, mine usually cost upwards of $250 which is why I rarely switch them up but my current ones are so beat up snd just ruined so maybe a trip there is needed. The ones you got were so cute, I really like the vibe and I feel like they have a lot more variety there then in supersavers lol
Idk where he went, but my brother broke his glasses when in Japan last month and had to get a new pair. In and out in a couple of hours, less than $100 US.

I got my Jins frames in one hour for $140 USD in 2015 when the San Francisco location opened. I beat mine up wearing them in bed or lying down for movie night and I still haven’t had to adjust or tighten the screws. They’re durable!
The eye hospital where I am in the UK and my opticians also have those machines to test your eyesight. Though my optician checks it with a normal eye test lol.

I am in the UK. I had to go back around 5 different times to my opticians, doing the manual tests, getting different results each time. They confirmed that it was not my fault & that my eyes are struggling. I had a diabetes test ran incase that was the problem - was all fine. At no point of this month of eyeache and stress did anyone offer any other kind of help..
That machine is an autorefractor and it gets a starting point of your prescription before you go into the optician. It gives them a basic prescription to start from before they fine tune it, it's not 100% accurate

The machine is an autorefractor. It’s standard in America too and basically everywhere since the 80s, it just tends to give too much minus power because people accommodate to near targets, so we have to do the subjective “better one or two?” in order to get a more accurate comfortable prescription
I think I had seen on Instagram that you didn't think this video was doing well or was good, but I completely disagree. It was actually seeing about that video that made me come to your channel when I hadn't been here in a few months since I was kind of good on wish hauls. I love it. There's a glasses place in my city here in Canada that can make them in 30 minutes if you don't require any thinning for extreme prescriptions (like mine, mine took a week as they couldn't make it in store) It also only costed me $250 before insurance for a -6.00 prescription, thinned, anti scratch, and anti glare. If you guys have a second specs near you, I highly recommend
This machine that tests your eye sight is actually quite common. However, you don't usually find it at opticians but rather at an ophthalmologist. The reason why the manual testing of the eye sight is more common is that occasionally you're between two dioptre values. During the manual testing you can tell them you see no difference between these two values and they will prescribe you the lower option. Most of the time when that happens you would "need" the higher value based on the deformation of your eye's surface, so the machine will measure the higher value. Eyes get used to glasses over time and therefore your vision will gradually become worse, so both opticians and ophthalmologists prefer to give you the lower value to decrease the speed at which your vision will worsen.
I used to get my dioptre values tested at an ophthalmologist and she would always test me both with the machine and manually. I was between two values before and got the lower option prescribed.
I'm also surprised to hear your optician takes that long to manufacture glasses. My optician takes 3-4 days and that's because they need to order the lenses first. (It will take longer if you don't have an own frame yet and the one you chose from the store needs to be ordered first, but that's not really part of the lens manufacturing.)
I work with opticians/optometrists (not ophthalmologists) and we have that autorefractor and have had it for years.
I always used to get my glasses in Thailand or other parts of south east Asia. Prices were significantly cheaper than AUS or NZ. Plus really quick turnaround time.
A lot of lens manufacturers are actually based in Thailand! Definitely where you’d be able to get them the quickest and least expensive

We have that machine in Canada!! It measures your prescription, but the eye doctor also double checks the old fashioned way to make sure it works well for you.
I've never been this early! I was starting to suffer from pretty pastel withdrawal I love that you made this video because a lot of Japan related videos just show the shopping centers and the different cafe's so this was refreshing to watch keep up the great work and say Hi to Archie for me ❤

In Japan, the price of glasses depends on the frames. Usually, they are made of titanium or plastic,, but the frames are made of a shape memory alloy that doesn't distort the frame, the frames with embedded jewels, and the frames of high class brands are expensive.
Normally it is 10,000 yen to 18,000 yen (95 - 170 US $) including the lens. Ultra-thin lenses for people with poor eyesight are an additional 3,000 yen (29 US $), and anti-blue light lenses are another 3,000 yen (29 US $).
So if you want a shape-memory alloy frame, super thin + blue light-cut lenses, you'll be looking at about 30,000 yen ( 290 US $)
The non-thin type takes 30 minutes to an hour to finish. The thin type takes about a week to complete.
In addition, contact lenses are one-day disposable and the normal price is about 4,000 yen(38 US $) for 30 of them for one eye. (First time users need a prescription from a doctor.)

Hers are from Specsavers, here in Australia . They are so good with her. They fix or replace for free too.
They were just under $240(Australia), and I get 2 pairs for that price. Highly recommended going to spec savers.

That machine is actually a pre-test - normally your should check the prescription afterwards doing the test with the different lenses you know.
I'm working at a company called - you can get our cheapest glasses for 20$ (US) (without filters or anything)
Ours take approx. A week to 10days until they're finished mostly because we don't store the lenses in our store, but got them delivered by our central warehouse
To grind them into the frame it really only takes a few minutes - it's usually a full automated process - only the final installation into the frames is done by hand
The thing is that this place (or at least this location) had the equipment to make the glasses in site. Most places don't, and they send the order out to a place that actually makes them and they wave to wait to get them back (they usually wait for a big batch of glasses to be sent back at once instead of paying to have them delivered every single day), so you're basically paying a middle man and also have to wait for them to be made and shipped back for the convenience of going to a shop close to you. But if you go to these places that have the equipment to make them themselves you can get them cheaper, way faster.
That's awesome! I will be in Tokyo for 12 days in 2 months! Will definitely get a pair. Here in US new prescription from the eye doctor costs $250, my last pair of glasses costed almost $400, anti-glare/high index/stigmatism. It would have been more if I didn't get it from an online store. I need a spare pair. thank you so much!

The machine was an autorefractor ot takes a measurement of what your prescription might be. It works by measuring how your eyes focus and offering an idea of the prescription. The test is the only true way to find out though. We have them at Specsavers which is located in the UK, Australia and other countries around the world 😊💕

I always order my glasses online for the reason of cost. I can get the frames, lenses, and all the coatings/filters I need for about $60 USD this way. When I get them through my eye doctor, the lenses alone cost $80 after my insurance coverage. So glad you posted this! It’s awesome insight into new things that could be implemented in other places as well. Those frames look 🔥 on you as well!

My sister is an optician. She even has a master degree in it. We are germans. She works for one of the biggest eyewear stores in Germany (Fielmann) and they use those machines as well. But also do the other test with left or right which is better?
And we get a lot of family discount from that. So glasses are never really expensive to me. But i like the ones you pick! They suit you well :)

No and Oz are usually same but there new place in both called Dresden. They make one frame in a rainbow of colours so you can just replace lens if you want full pair is under $100 nzd lenses are done on site done on a day often, max custom lenses in a week. Recycled plastic frames. Definitely worth look if you live in nz or Oz

THIS MACHINE IS SO FASCINATING!! Idid this machine thing, but also got my eyes checked manually. Checked the alignment, some special things (apparently I was slightly crosseyed but never knew) and so much more. BUT it was hella expensive (in Germany, I paid 1200 €, roughly around 1350$)So seeing that Japan is not only quick (had to wait 2 weeks for mine) but also being in a price range that is way easier to afford is wonderful. Guess my next holiday I will get a pair of glasses from Japan XD

I loved this style of video! Seeing the cost comparison,different technology available and services elsewhere is very interesting. I'm from the U.S., and when I went to Aussie a few years ago, I knew that my money would go further even with higher prices on same or similar products. That allowed me to try stuff I wouldn't experience back home. That's why I mention the money part ;) What was also interesting to see is the differences. I knew Australia didn't have certain staples or as big of a variety of stuff here(not a huge deal besides cost difference and just an adjustment to it) or ease of access too, but there were many that we didn't have at home that was nice to see and a great experience! I mention this because of that eye machine. Hardest thing to adjust too?, the internet service. It's soo slow, lol. I was watching another channel, the other day showing you can actually haggle for prices at electronic stores in Japan. I find that amazing. Most places you can only do that at say flea markets and garage sales. More videos like this would be a great! :) Side note- I hope this comes across non arrogant. Its not meant too. Its hard to express emotion with words ;)

I went to my optometrist in NZ recently and they had to eyesight measuring machine there too! Not as impressive turn around time (a week) nor as good a price, and they still did the lens test to double check, but yeah! Those machines are basically magic.
Sitting here in Canada and turn around for glasses is pretty much standard to an hour if you go in a physical store. I often order glasses online though cause our medical coverage doesn't actually cover glasses. Buying online I can get a standard range RX with filter for under 20$ then I go into a physical place to get the fit just right. It can take a week or two to get online glasses shipped but the places I buy from also have free returns so generally order 5 pairs or what ever $$$ to make free shipping. then pick out the best pair and send the rest back.
Hey! I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed this video even though it's not the content you usually post-- I know it's easy to get caught up with the statistics of everything but I think you should keep doing it!
The autorefractor (machine where they got your prescription) is also used in other countries, but primarily for children below a certain age or for those that aren’t able to respond to the manual test, which is considered much more accurate. The autorefractor is more suited for a prescription estimation, as it doesn’t consider whether certain factors such as eye pressure have an impact on your vision (at least by Australian standards). Lucky in your case, as your prescription doesn’t seem to be very high - it becomes less accurate the higher your prescription is usually.
In Sydney, normally the glasses should take 1-2 weeks to arrive if the lab isn’t in the store/city, 1 month might have been due to lab difficulties?
In my city in the US, most if not all eyeglass places can get you glasses in under an hour. I can’t imagine waiting a week or a month to get glasses!

As someone who also has to wear prescription glasses and am also Australian I was very excited about this video and really enjoyed it and found it very interesting so I’m sad to hear that these kinds of videos don’t do very well
I’m a trainee optician and I loved this video! A month is absolutely absurd for you to have had to wait. I’m a bit sceptical that they made glasses solely off an autorefraction, it’s usually not the best way to make your specs as you might respond better to a refraction done by an optometrist, but it’s interesting to know that’s how it was done in that store!
i LOOOOOVED this video! short and sweet but you can tell just as much love went into it. so interesting how smart the technology is! also loved the little tips (just spent $550 on glasses here in NZ so appreciate any tips on how to look after them lol) love u keep making content that makes u happy too :')

We have that machine in Australia as well 😂😂 I work at an optometrist, and usually the optometrist will look at the machine reading, your old prescription and also do the No1 & No2 to get a suitable reading bc a lot of the time a lot of ppl can’t get adapt to their ‘true’ machine reading. Just a little bit of info. Aussie optoms are actually extremely detailed compared to a lot of overseas options from experience. Buuuut can’t beat that Japanese convenience 😂😂
At the ophthalmic office I work at we use the machine Alex was talking about (called an autorefractor or AR for short) and then the digital refractor (Alex had a quick shot of some when she was panning around) or a manual phoroptor. Just the AR is not accurate enough usually and is just a starting point for a prescription.
This is such a cool idea! I have had glasses since I was two, I have a very high negative prescription and am very nearsighted: this will be absolutely fascinating!
My glasses usually cost over $600 CDN and take about 4 to 6 weeks (my prescription is around -28)
Edit: And they put me on that same machine pretty much every year at my ophthalmologist. So as much as I love Japan and how they are very good at very many things, that machine is not some fancy special Japan only machine lol

I didn't realise it took so long in Australia, because the last time I got glasses at home was when I was a child. I got my glasses made here in Japan in a week for a brand new prescription. I did a regular eye test like you described, not a fancy machine though. I guess Hakodate doesn't have in store lens cutters like in Tokyo.
Thanks for sharing this and it's really good to know glasses are much cheaper in Japan. If I go to Japan in the future, I'll definitely get spare glasses for both my kids. They're long sighted and only need glasses for reading, but it still cost me a small fortune to get glasses for two kids
