Less compression: More DEPRESSION! I'm one of those people who said they really didn't give a shit whether Mikael growled again or not but missed the true heaviness of the musical parts at key moments over the past few albums. Like I loved Pale Communion, but there were so many moments where it would have been fucking perfect to go absolutely heavy & demented, but it didn't. It was still cool, just wasn't what I wanted or expected.
Then I heard Mikael growl again, and holy shit, that was actually such a huge part of what made Opeth so amazing. It's the dynamic contrasts between all of the ingredients. Heavy guitars vs Clean. Fast vs Slow. Loud vs Soft. Growls vs 'normal' singing.

My problem with "new Opeth" is that the premise itself felt wrong. Progressive Rock is supposed to be "Progressing" into some new and different from what has been done until then. When your sound is mostly a heavy emulation of the late 60's and early 70's prog, your missing the "prog" part which people mistake for being just heavy skill chops. THIS ACTUALLY FEELS NEW. Like the album that should have come out after Watershed.

If you've heard Mikael live in the last like 5 or so years, his growls have changed a lot. They're not as clear as they were, but they're deeper, and darker. I do remember him saying in his interview with The Charismatic Voice, that he's changed it a bit over time, and it kind of shows on this record. I loved the way he used to sound, but I love the way his growls sound on this.

First listen at Midnight friday I was iffy on the track. Woke up in the morning and listened to it 4 times in a row and fell in love with it. You said Ghost Reveries, which I absolutely get Baying of the Hounds and the Grand Conjuration off of this track, but to me that heavy riff is straight Deliverance. Watershed in there too.
You mentioned ICV and Pale Communion as Newpeth things you've heard, that bass Intro and weird shit after before the guitars come in heavy is straight Heritage to me.
Also want to say, this drumming makes me Nostalgic, even more than the growls and heavy riffage. I liked Axe's drumming but Walt's seems to be more similar to Martin Lopez's
Like that just snare hitting repeated during the heavy guitar riff is SO Opeth, and I really can't place my finger on it other than It reminding me more of Lopez's drumming than Axenrots.

There's way too many nice little ghost notes for that to be programmed I'd guess. They've got a great drummer so at that point It would just be easier and faster if the guy just played it 😂.
This sounds promising. I hope this isn't just isolated to just this track or like 2 or 3. Hopefully this is reflective of the overall tone of the record. I'm excited actually. After all this time... Its nice.

Nice review and analysis! The guitars reminded of some good Fender twang while being not as thin as Strats. So I assume they went for Telecasters. But maybe you're right and they took an old Paul and turned down the lower mids and bass. The amp choice surely does a lot, too. Mikaels "new" growls are much more grunty and throaty I think. And slightly deeper in timbre. Like a mix between Watershed and Deliverance.

All I ask from this album is one or two moments where Opeth is willing to sit in the same vibey idea for a 90+ seconds and let us sink into just a singular moment. I’m thinking about something similar to 4:40 - 7:20 in Harlequin Forest. This is likely wishful thinking, and surrounding context is very important for having these moments hit, but that’s about all I ask for that we didn’t get with this track here.
Very excited! I’m trying to limit expectations because Opeth will go somewhere that catches me off guard and I’m very into that.

Hey brother I don't use social media I am a loner
I felt bad about not explaining my Clairo - Juna gift. Maybe you'll read this.
I think the song has an unusual feeling compared to all other pop and other modern music. Some call it 70s retro but I still feel like she makes it her own rather than straight copying. All of the instruments in the song are so pretty for me, very few if anyone outside of prog/jazz is doing this much with a variety of instruments anymore. All the little piano plinkles tickle my ears and Claire Cottrill's vocals sound like honey - like she is whispering sweetly to me, makes me feel about romance. It could be compared to Billie Eilish vocals I guess but for me this song has a lot more interesting stuff surrounding those vocals with pianos, horns and synth organs with that addictive catchy synth hook starting us off. The funky drum beat helps the song move forward with a nice pace for me. Then there is the mouth trumpet Clairo does its so funny then when it kicks in with the real horns its a cool surprise. The ending of the song really ties all of the themes of the song together nicely in my opinion.
Sorry if you thought it was too boring to donate for but at least you still gave it an =

He's an actual musician and music theory nerd unlike most reaction content creators, so he actually has stuff to say. Of course, he's interrupting the song a lot and providing educational feedback. Also, because of copyright laws, he can only show clips of the song. Reaction content creators who just play the whole song, give a short opinion afterwise, and monetize their video are technically breaking the law and they can be asked to take the video down by the copyright owners.
Long story short, Mike is doing exactly what he's supposed to be doing.
