Love the very dark and atmospheric sounds, background noise's and synths, it reminds me of the soundtrack of the TV show unsolved mysteries. I like when a band can accurately fit the theme with the album cover and title to a T. Can't wait for the album.
Less compression: More DEPRESSION! I'm one of those people who said they really didn't give a shit whether Mikael growled again or not but missed the true heaviness of the musical parts at key moments over the past few albums. Like I loved Pale Communion, but there were so many moments where it would have been fucking perfect to go absolutely heavy & demented, but it didn't. It was still cool, just wasn't what I wanted or expected. Then I heard Mikael growl again, and holy shit, that was actually such a huge part of what made Opeth so amazing. It's the dynamic contrasts between all of the ingredients. Heavy guitars vs Clean. Fast vs Slow. Loud vs Soft. Growls vs 'normal' singing. Long live Nowpeth!
He sounds like he did back in the Bloodbath days to me. Can't wait for the new record! The wobbly vibrato voice towards the end sounds like he's playing the "Father" talking about his will.

I'm more happy we're getting production that sounds like the pre-prog rock records on some of the new single. The return of the growls is a nice bonus.

My problem with "new Opeth" is that the premise itself felt wrong. Progressive Rock is supposed to be "Progressing" into some new and different from what has been done until then. When your sound is mostly a heavy emulation of the late 60's and early 70's prog, your missing the "prog" part which people mistake for being just heavy skill chops. THIS ACTUALLY FEELS NEW. Like the album that should have come out after Watershed.
This could be my album of the year depending on how it goes, and with what I've heard at least fifty to sixty percent of the vocals on this album are harsh so that's promising especially with the fusion into the newer Opeth style; if this album doesn't live up to my hopes for it though then I have what will still likely be a very close second album to rely on for best this year... Psyched to hear the new drummer’s contribution. I flew to Boston to catch them with Mastodon the day after the drummer quit - I was sure Opeth was gonna cancel. When those two played together here in Minneapolis, Opeth canceled because Mikael bashed his head open.
First listen at Midnight friday I was iffy on the track. Woke up in the morning and listened to it 4 times in a row and fell in love with it. You said Ghost Reveries, which I absolutely get Baying of the Hounds and the Grand Conjuration off of this track, but to me that heavy riff is straight Deliverance. Watershed in there too. You mentioned ICV and Pale Communion as Newpeth things you've heard, that bass Intro and weird shit after before the guitars come in heavy is straight Heritage to me. Also want to say, this drumming makes me Nostalgic, even more than the growls and heavy riffage. I liked Axe's drumming but Walt's seems to be more similar to Martin Lopez's Like that just snare hitting repeated during the heavy guitar riff is SO Opeth, and I really can't place my finger on it other than It reminding me more of Lopez's drumming than Axenrots.
I enjoyed the first listen, but it's definitely more of a grower like ICV. The growls sounded super isolated/forward to me, might be because of the dryness you mentioned, so all the nuances of the growl are more apparent.
Nice review and analysis! The guitars reminded of some good Fender twang while being not as thin as Strats. So I assume they went for Telecasters. But maybe you're right and they took an old Paul and turned down the lower mids and bass. The amp choice surely does a lot, too. Mikaels "new" growls are much more grunty and throaty I think. And slightly deeper in timbre. Like a mix between Watershed and Deliverance.
this feels a lot like watershed. ambience, 2010s opeth keyboard but also evil heavy guitar riffs and screams. and the 2nd half of the song sonds very dream theater to me which is interesting because usually opeth don't sound like them at all
I’m just stoked we’re getting heavier Opeth again. The song is weird as all hell, definitely ICV songwriting with some old style licks and harmonies. The growls definitely sound better than they have in almost a decade, glad Mike seems into again.
Doesn’t that symbol mean “paragraph?” Edit: it’s called a “silcrow” which does, in fact, mean section. Also, I like the clarity of the growling, even if the lack of “big sound” reverb and layering isn’t there. You can mostly understand it without a lyrics sheet - that’s not like most of their previous stuff, where you have to read the lyrics too. I like how this looks like another cool concept album, with the “will” of a dying father, in different paragraphs or sub-paragraphs represented by the track titles. Just 8 more days! 🤘 And, it’s D augmented/Whole tone scale mixed with D harmonic minor.
If you would have told me at this time last year that Mike Portnoy Would be back in Dream Theater, and Opeth would be releasing new music with Death vocals. I would've said you were insane.

Psyched to hear the new drummer’s contribution. I flew to Boston to catch them with Mastodon the day after the drummer quit - I was sure Opeth was gonna cancel. When those two played together here in Minneapolis, Opeth canceled because Mikael bashed his head open.
Drummer was fired, not quit
Ghost Reveries meets In Cauda Venenum was my first thought as well. Hoping that the album version develops the themes a bit more, but I'm here for it!
I liked Axe's drumming but Walt's seems to be more similar to Martin Lopez's
Like that just snare hitting repeated during the heavy guitar riff is SO Opeth, and I really can't place my finger on it other than It reminding me more of Lopez's drumming than Axenrots.
The world is healing...in gowls
Like a mix between Watershed and Deliverance.
this feels a lot like watershed. ambience, 2010s opeth keyboard but also evil heavy guitar riffs and screams. and the 2nd half of the song sonds very dream theater to me which is interesting because usually opeth don't sound like them at all
It's a song that I could see going in Deliverance, love to hear it and I hope they're going into that direction again
It's like if Deliverence was really experimental
@@henrywalton5967 Yeah pretty much
They've got a NEW drummer on this one
New Opeth in October. AND new Wintersun in a few weeks? Like what??
Growling reminds me of Napalm Death (harmony corruption) both in tone and enunciation. Not a bad thing.
And, it’s D augmented/Whole tone scale mixed with D harmonic minor.

Unfortunately the songs are gone. I've found nothing on this new record that has me coming back.
Never clicked on a video faster
the single cover gave me hope that Oldpeth were coming back for sure
Thanks for the spoiler
Reaction? This was a full-grown analysis. Very good! Have to check your other videos.
If you would have told me at this time last year that Mike Portnoy Would be back in Dream Theater, and Opeth would be releasing new music with Death vocals. I would've said you were insane.
