Last year I watched as many videos as I could on thorogood boots, your videos in particular helped me decide on them. It's a year later and I'll never buy anything but thorogood moc toe boots for work. Standing on concrete slabs.....ladders, kneeling for a year In them and not having your feet and knees throbbing by 3 o'clock is a great perk. Worth every penny. Thanks, for spending tons of money so I didn't have to!
@@kennethhirsh6660 nope all the leather is still in good condition and I’m not taking care of it at all. I would have been through 2 pairs of timberland pro toe leather by now. I got them November 2020 and wear them almost everyday. I did new insoles this year and when it’s colder out I just wear a heavier pair of merino wool socks. The soles are almost in need a replacement but for $260. They’re well worth it.
Embarrassing question . Do they smell off? Like the leather? I been through two pairs and they seem to smell weird. I wear carthartt socks. Might invest in something better. Danners and Irish setters haven’t “smell”. And it’s not stinky feet. It’s just the leather has a certain smell to them.
I’ve rotated between both for years while working 8 to 12’s on concrete and they’re both comfortable. I feel no difference between the cork and synthetic or the shanks. Concrete eventually takes it toll no matter what you wear. Both of these boots helped me get through around 8 months of Planter Fasciitis in both feet at the same time. A lot of times you can pick up the Carolina’s for less than or right around $100 on sale. I don’t see that with the Thorogoods. Love the videos!
@@naps3386 It eventually just healed itself over time and a lot of ibuprofen for the pain. It’s been 4 years now and every now and then it lets me know it’s there in one foot or the other.
I think you should include the laces in these reviews, I've replaced more laces than I can count. And I would like to know the difference between cheap and quality laces.
I can't speak for Carolinas, but as much as I love my Thorogoods, the laces are garbage. Comfortable, tough work boots that I'd recommend any day, but it was disappointing that they went cheap in that area.
@@jeremyt2212 I agree, the laces are pretty rough. I’m personally having a hard time finding anything I really like, that said the laces that came with my Thursday pots are pretty good, as well as the set on my keen’s
I haven't found a shoelace yet that lasts more than about 6 months on my work boots, I have had better results with a hard sheathed synthetic laces like the bass pro lifetime laces(550 Paracord sheathing probably would be comparable) or a decent pair of leather laces(not the kiwi brand) because they don't fray as much. It should be noted that leather laces can sometimes have a defect that makes them easy to snap in one place so you do want to pre stretch the laces a bit. I once twisted an emergency lace from kevlar thread that lasted fairly well, but it was a bit too narrow and time consuming to make so I would probably want to make a machine to twist laces before it becomes a viable solution.
I tried both on at Boot Barn. I had to size down one whole size from my sneakers for both. I was leaning toward thorogood until I tried them on. Even the wides were WAY too tight for my feet. The Carolinas, even with the steel toe, are the most comfortable thing I've ever put on my feet. Don't know how long they'll last, but for comfort and style, they get a 100%
2 hard years on my Carolinas. Not these exact models but close to it. I work in all kinds of conditions from mud, to swamp, to concrete shop floors, to hard dirt, soft dirt, etc... I've taken care of the outer wear surface with a leather treatment and I'm still going strong. Only issue I have with my is they make my feet sweat in the summer even with wicking socks but work great in winter. So I've got another pair to wear in the summer to come. Hope this gave you some help.
@@kennethbeard881 my feet sweat when it's cold 😆. I always wear wool or wool blend socks with boots. Keep your feet from sticking and still insulate when wet.
@Michael Corson: I’m three week into a pair of Carolina AMP’s and they are the most comfortable boot or shoe I have ever worn in my adult life. At 46 with some foot and muscular issues I wish I would have discovered these years ago. They are definitely underrated in the boot community. I too had to seize down from a 13 to a 12 medium.
While I love the content of this channel, there isn't hardly any emphasis on how the boots feel and what wear results actually are in the field. I think he should at least test each boot for comfort.
My local shop just sold me a pair of steel toe 6-inch Thorogood's for 195 out-the-door! Couldn't believe it. This is their standard price and people drive from all over the state to get them here. They're not broken in yet, but I already love them! Cushy, lightweight, and they look awesome! All of my friends swear by them and I can already see why. Broken in, they might be the best boot I've ever purchased, and I've spent double the price on other boots.
I've tried both. I bought the Thorogoods during the last Moctober due to what I learned about them on your channel. The Carolinas are more comfortable because the lateral stitching that goes from the upper to the moc toe area is located further up. The thorogood boots have the same stitching further down and when the boot flexes, it creates a pinch point on the top of my foot. The Carolinas do no pinch the top of my foot when kneeling down like the Thorogoods do. Thank you for this review!
My 8 year old thorogoods finally gave out a few months ago. They had two resoles done. They made it that long in the oilfield. So I’d said they were definitely great boots and worth the money.
I also worked in the patch and had a pair of the thorogood moc toe waterproof steel toe. They were great untill I soaked them in water out of a desiccant bottle,my fault , I think they shrunk a size and a half. I liked the boots but with them rasing the price I've gone to the Carolinas
I tried both of these back to back recently. The thorogoods felt like they were made longer but narrower. And every pair I tried were too tight across the top of the ball of my foot. So I went with the Carolinas.
Carolinas are great, but really don’t do too hot when they’re exposed to rain/ wet ground a lot IMO (I found mine shrunk a little but i’m betting that it was something on my end). Their waterproofing is absolutely top tier though. I’m honestly willing to bet that you could use them as waders
@@triplea6174 First, the Carolina lace grommets weren't completely flattened on the inside so it poked my foot. I hammered them down flat and had no problems after that. Second, the under foot feel is just better in the Thorogoods. I alternate my boots everyday and every Monday morning I choose the Thorogoods. I won't argue if anyone says they like the Carolinas because they are also good.
Surprised this video hasn’t happened already, great job though and can’t wait to see that HD baby! My dad has five, 2 that he built from the ground up..88 shovel head soft tail and a complete custom Jesse James style chopper that has won many custom trophies and awards. The other three are just modded road kings for Sturgis and long trips..
This was a great video. I also thought they were made in the same factory. Buying us made boots is a big deal to me. I have owned red wings Justin’s and have switched to Carolina boots in the last 3 years. I have a pair of Carolina amp boots that are the best boots I have ever worn on my feet. And they are still going strong. I work as a painter slash home repair person own my own business. My feet take a beating on ladders and walking on un even surfaces. I would definitely purchase Another pair of them.
Not sure if it has already been stated in the comments (way too many to read each one, but great for the moctober discussion) but I have both the thorogood and Carolina moc toe boots. I felt there was an incredibly noticeable difference in the weight of each. The Carolina’s feel much lighter than the thorogoods. Both pairs have held up for multiple years of use in an industrial maintenance setting. But the noticeable weight difference has me sold on the Carolina’s for future purchases. Thanks so much for adding them to this years Moctober selection!
I know it’s a year old comment, but your observation helps and is an important one. I almost purchased a pair of Carolinas yesterday for $150.00 on sale. I held off to find out more info. I think I’m going to pick them up now. Thanks!
Just got my first pair of Thorogoods a few weeks ago and they are by far the best boots I've ever worn. I have had Carolina, Red Wing, Ariat, Justin's, Timberland, Wolverine, etc and my thorogoods are better than all of them by far in my opinion. I wanna try Danner next because they are also American made and I've heard great things about them
I've wanted a Moc Toe Wedge Sole boot for a while and not wanting to go cheap. I normally wear a 12W or sometimes an 11.5W. That said, Red Wing and Thorogood were completely out. I tried and way too narrow even 2E width, they also run long. After watching you cut the Thorogood and Carolina in half and compare, I figured that I'd give the Carolina a look. I read a review that said the Carolina has a fuller toe box than the Thorogood and Red Wing, so I went to Overlook Boots in Glen Rock PA with great success. They have a large inventory and very willing to assist. The Carolina size 11.5 D was just a bit snug with medium weight socks and after a days wear they feel incredible. Thanks Rose Anvil for your content!!!!
Excellent! I grew up in New Freedom and went to Susquehannock! And thanks for your detailed experience. Im on the fence between these 2. I dont think I have wide feet but hate cramped toe boxes.
Need to throw the ever-so-popular (at least at my workplace) Irish Setter moc toes. So many employees swear by them, I believe it's nearly a 50-50 split on Thorogood and Irish Setter ownership. A great idea to thank the viewers for the channels success would be to have an end of moctober giveaway. A few viewers to win moc boots of their choice. Just an idea.
I wear the Irish setter wingshooters daily. Super comfortable but the comp toe always becomes exposed after about a years use. I like them but the toes are weak.
@@jarredfloyd8943 I have heard that and it seems the quality control on the moc toe stitching is always a complaint for them. Seen pictures on certain reviews on the IS.
@@BTAJoe Yes! That would be a great idea as a comparison to the quality differences between the premium (RW) and the affordable (IS). I would like to see that comparison as well.
Great video as always! I have a pair of the Danner Bull Run moc toes and after owning them and the thoroughgoods I still would take my Danners. I felt they breathed a lot better.
Please do a review on the Corcoran historical jumpboot by cutting them in half. They are the cheapest but best Goodyear welted boots out there and they are made in the USA
I always loved the Corcoran 2's but you might want to price them again last time I looked for a pair they were up to almost $300. double what I was paying while I was active.
I love Corcorans, but the last pair I got was very disappointing. The midsole on both boots started coming apart letting the shanks dig into the bottom of my feet after only about 6 months. The pair before that lasted nearly 4 years.
I own a couple of pairs of Carolina loggers, Spruce and Birch. The more expensive pair are very well made with leather mid soles, and Vibram lug soles.
I have a pair of Red Wing 2415 Moc Toe boots that I’ve been wearing for 2 years. I’ve had them resoled once and they’re about due for another resole. I walk about 10 miles a day in them 5 days a week, so if we do a rough estimate they have around 5,200 miles walked in. I’d love to send them to you next year they’ll have just under 8,000 miles of wear on them by then.
I have 3 pairs of Thorogoods. Had some work boot vouchers to use up. I’ve been wearing 1 pair of the non steel toe Thorogoods for about a year now. My job consist of a bunch of walking on concrete. They have held up pretty well. Very comfortable. Easiest break in I’ve ever had with a boot. About 2 days and they were molded to my foot. Actually so comfortable I think I’m wearing Airmaxs or something. Downfall is they are pricey. If I didn’t have company boot vouchers then I’d probably go with the Carolina especially knowing how close of a moc toe that they are. Great video!
I've been wearing 6" Thorogoods in both soft and steel toe since I started in the trades. I've always loved them. I was a carpenter from when I was 19 until this year when I when I started welding. I'm 24 now and even though I don't need as much ancle support as I did framing I've still decided to go to an 8" boot and this video convinced me on the Carolinas. My next pair of work boots will be 8" soft toe Carolinas. It don't hurt that I live in SC so I like the name of them.
Based on your reviews i got the 6" thorogood moc steel toe. I will never buy another boot again, this is simply the best i've ever worn. Thank you. Ive worked in industry for 20 years and have constantly been let down by so called "work boots" its been a long waste of money... but not with these gems.
I've been wearing Redwing 606's for years and finally made the switch to Moc toe boots about 3 years ago. I spend a lot of time walking on concrete and my feet, knees and hips definitely like the moc toe wedge soles better. I've tried the Thorogoods and the Carolinas. One thing I'd like to point out is that I have a wide foot and a 2E width in the Carolina is a wider boot than the Thorogood in the exact same size. The Carolina felt like slipper's when I first put them on, the Thorogood had me wanting it in a 3E or 4E which by the way isn't available in a Throrogood. The Thorogood is a good boot but took much longer to break in and required boot stretchers to aid in the break in process. In my opinion the Carolina is way more comfortable and more generous in the toe box than the Throrogood is. You can talk about what each boot is made out and while it is important comfort and correct fitment is MUCH more important.
My sister in law works at the Carolina factory...so I've been wearing them for years now. I'm a lineman, and I'm tough on boots, but the ones I'm currently wearing have been my longest lasting(2 years)
I’ve been waiting for this video since your response from last week. I was hoping the Carolinas would have better components to them but I’m thankful you posted the video and cut them in half so I could see the internals. I think for the work I do around concrete and and other variables I think the red wings 8 inch moc is the next boot purchase.
Very interesting. Since I’ve become so poor this year, I had to buy Chinese (Hisea) steel toe boots for around $50. Honestly they aren’t as bad as I thought, hopefully someday I’ll be able to spring for some US made boots again.
I have the Carolinas with the steel toe and they’re really comfortable. Sometimes I forget i even have boots on. So far they’re one of the best boots I’ve worn and have lasted me quite a while
Got my first pair of Carolinas (the model is called Sarge) about 2 weeks ago (they are how I found this video), and I have to say these are 100% the most comfortable boots I have ever owned or worn. I wore Marine Corps combat boots for 8 years, various types and brands of police boots, tried Irish Setters, and several brands recommended for construction and heavy industry when I worked in construction and on an explorational core drilling rig. Nothing has come close, I'm genuinely blown away as I kind of thought my feet and back would always just hurt the rest of my life. These have been a revelation.
I have several other pairs of Carolina’s and have really liked them. These Moc Toes look really nice. My only issue and a small one with both the Carolina and Thorogoods. I wish it had a V cut into the leather to make it a little more flexible while walking in them. But both look great and would like to try them both.
I've been loving my Keen San Jose $130 wedges. 2yrs in excavating and concrete still holding up great. Leather is getting a little dried out since theyre always muddy, but the soles are in good shape. They're luxuriously comfortable and the leather is very breathable. My current ones arent waterproof, but that is desirable in a dry climate. Just bare leather no plastic. They're broken in like a baseball glove. I miss Sears Die Hard pig skin wedges. Those used to be my boots.
I just got the thorogood 8" for my working boots. But I want those keen sanjose soft toe for my every day boots. There not 130$ right now there 180-189$ right now and for a while. I've been watching them on amazon..👀 Only ones that go onsale are the dang aluminum toe.. probaly cause there not selling as many of those. I cant find the sanjose anywhere locally anymore, big r hasn't ordered them for a year or so..(I shoulda got them last year) 😅 I have a feeling it's like everything else, the company makes a new model and fazes out the last.. I think that's what's happening with this model of keen. They were the most comfortable boots I tryed on (and I'm picky) They do have horible reviews and from what I see for good reason. Soles separating alot. I think theyd make a great walking boot but not neccesarily a long lasting work boot.
What about Chippewa? You’ve mentioned owning the lm before but I haven’t seen you cut any. A few years ago Chippewa put out a large number of cool fashionable boots but it seems like they’ve really downgraded their USA made boots and different selection?
@@roberttwist5190 I hadn't realized that, my chippewas are the most comfortable boots I have owned to date and I bought them in 2020(they were US made)
I own the 8in Carolina in the review with a steel toe, work in aerospace manufacturing on a epoxy’d concrete floor for 9hrs. On my first resole 1.5 years into ownership. Very comfortable, don’t notice the steel toe. They are extremely comfortable, had a one day break in when new and after the resole. Factory sole and vibram replacement wear out similarly. I don’t see a difference in rubber and polyurethane based sole. Overall good value, wide toe box. Heel is more narrow on Carolina than T-good, may affect stability. But I’m 160lbs, 5’10”, had no issues on concrete. Very soft and comfortable.
I have those same pair of Carolinas and I will say they are the most comfortable boots that I have ever owned BUT the sole and welt on the boots were not cemetrical. I had to do some touch up work on the right footed boot on a bench grinder to make them match up to be cemetrical. Other than that they are great boots. With these boots and their thorogood counter part I recommend ordering 1/2 down from what you usually wear.
I’ve worn the Carolina’s for work for about a year now. When I first got them I had to condition the leather to soften the toe box because it was a little flat and was compressing down the top of my foot too much. I had to replace the insole as well but for the price I paid I’m happy with them and would buy them again.
I’d love to see you pull apart a J. Crew branded boot like the “Kenton” which is a fashion oriented Moc-toe boot. It has looks that suggest it would be comparable to brands like Alden or Grant Stone but it costs quite a bit less than those brands. I’d love to see how they look on the inside and what you get for the money.
Just bought my first pair of Thorogood's, they're being delivered this Tuesday. I currently have pair of Carolina's and I couldn't be happier. They are comfortable and after almost two years of wearing them as a dock worker, they're still holding up really good. Only reason I got Thorogood's is because they have all black version and my company is requiring for boots to be black. I had no problem breaking in my Carolina's , they are extremely comfortable and overall really good work boot. Currently they are cheaper than Thorogood's and if you're pinching pennies, Carolina will do just as good.....maybe even better...
I have been using the Thorogood Moc with the steel toe (804-4200) for about six months now. I purchased them primarily because of Moc-tober last year, I really wanted American made because I want to support local as much as possible (even if it is regional) but the need for a steel toe excluded Red Wing (Their Irish Setter brand wasn't nearly as good IMHO). I work approximately 60hr work weeks on flat concrete shop floors. I can say without a doubt these are the best boots that I have ever owned. I agree that I wish the welt was leather but I haven't seen any cracking in it as of yet and the wear on the sole has been little to non so far. Really interested in the Carolina boots, I absolutely love the tobacco leather look, and would consider those as another daily driver boot considering how close they compete with one another from your review. Really enjoy the content you create, keep up the good work.
I've had my Carolinas for a year now. They're very comfortable and, my only gripe is that I would prefer a gusseted tongue. They're factory seconds so, I got a steal of a deal at $90.
Same here, couldn't pass up the factory second price. I've wore thorogoods for the last 3 yrs. So far the Carolinas aren't bad but I like my thorogoods better
I got Carolina steel toe boots because that’s what my coworkers were wearing five years ago, and I’ve been wearing them since. Might have to branch out a bit now that I’m not at a job that requires steel toe, but they’ve done well for me for years.
Thorogoods were my first pair of lace up boots. I’ve enjoyed them thoroughly. I recently went to the local boot store and found some Carolina 9” loggers for $145 out the door. They were marked down 40% So far they’ve been great too. Wore them for over 16 hours on the first day.
is that all you have to say? "they are great too", what are you 5 years old? how about some damm adult observations for Pete's sake, which one feels more secure, which one feels more comfortable, which one has arch support, which one doesn't, speak up man! God gave you a brain try and use it sometimes.
I ordered a pair of Carolina Poplar loggers using a voucher from my employer. They have a composite toe but steel shank. I was wondering about a stainless insole to protect from puncture. It’s something I miss about the old Army Jungle boots. Designed to protect from bamboo spears. They found that the desert boots modeled after the jungle boots still has the stainless plate got hot and stored heat on the desert asphalt in Iraq. Causing severe injuries. So they got away from it by just making an insanely thick sole to provide some protection from penetration but nothing as good as a stainless plate.
What about the Thorogood against Red Wing regular? Then Carolina against Irish Setter and Thursday Boots? These two sets seam to be price comparably and as you loosely said last video they all don't get worn the same! I would like to know about Red Wing's two other brand's that make them and Thursday Boot's get glowing reviews for quality to price!
feels weird to comment on a video that's almost a year old....but I bought a black pair of Thorogood mocs for my job as a line cook partly based on this video right when it came out...they've held up great. I stand on cement 40 hrs a week & don't sit down all day & my feet never hurt. I've spilled hot grease on them & even dropped a knife on them & I swear they saved my foot! The funny thing is, the only failure has been on the "nice" leather counter cover...I blew through that in a cpl months
I got a pair of Thorogoods almost exactly a year ago for my job. They require steel toe even though I sit at the computer in an office off of a shop all day. About 4 months ago, the front of the sole started delaminating from the midsole. I'm already looking at that Carolina with the full stitching on the front with envy
I bought a pair of Thorogood they ok 2 years old still holding up. Best pair of work boots I owned was a pair of last model discontinued Danner or $60 6" all leather boot working on concrete for 12 hour day they felt like a pair of slippers I wish Danner would have stayed with that model
I found a par of Georgia boot on a clearance rack in Kohl for some reason like 10 years ago. Basic flats with anti microbial leather for 45$ 🤣. I bought the same pair over and over after that at 120$ (5pairs/10 years), recently bought a 160$ non steel toe 8" work boot with low heal, heel support, comfy blue insole, waterproof, orange accents... Boot is amazing like all the last models i bought. Georgia for Life, they make a boot for every job. Just ordered a sweet pair for my girlfriend for her bday... I hope she loves em like i do 😊
As an Australian I've watched some many of these videos to get an idea on quality vs price as moc toe boots are not a thing for Aussies. I frequent the US as my wife is from here (currently in the US now) and after about 2-3 years of wanting a pair of moc toes I went to Boot Barn today and walked out with the Carolina amp's. I would have loved to love the Thorogoods more but the sizes seemed all over the place, a 10.5 in a 6" was too small but felt equally tight, the 11 was just too big, the 11 in 8" boot was insanely narrow and I couldn't get my foot into it despite the 11 in a 6" being near right.. The 11w in the 8" was also still too narrow and squeezed my foot badly at the base of the laces/start of the steel toe cap. The Carolina's fit extremely well in a 10.5, they were the second most comfortable moc toe I tried on in the store. The most comfortable were a pair of Twisted X moc toes, but for the price I just didn't trust their boot. Seemed like a fake Goodyear welt with rubber, wasn't sure on the quality of the leather (felt more sneaker like) and they were an import. Happy with the Carolina's and will see how they stand up in some heavy industrial work. I would LOVE to see the Keen Liberties cut open as they were the boot I really wanted to try/buy but I couldn't find any in store. The composite toe and shank in a moc toe for me is a massive positive as I fly for work often and steel toes need to come off at security. Also nice in the winter to not have steel caps on your feet. They will likely be my next boot purchase even if I need to go in blind.
I have both wedge sole snd healed version of thorogoods. The healed is a lot more comfortable to be honest. Ive worn my healed style for almost 2 years. 30 miles walking a day, 5 days a week…..
I just bought a pair of thorogoods at 20% off So 220 with tax. I don’t know if the manufacturer had the sale or the store. Out of the box comfortable the size is the same as my Hoka bondi 6.
I don’t work a job that requires work boots like this and I can’t imagine I’ll ever buy a pair in the future but i just watched this video the entire way through
Steel Blue make the best work boot in Australia, being Australian I have tried them all and the Steel Blue is by far the most comfortable if you have a wide foot...
I can see that. I tried on a 10.5 and my pinky toe felt too snug. I went up half a size and these feel great. Guessing where my longest toe is I feel they fit about right with the finger width from the tip.
I have Carolina logger style boots and they lasted for 5 years of abuse and neglect before the leather got cut over the steel toe when a heavy barrel of scrap steel was set down on it. The steel toe saved my toes but the uppers and the waterproofing finally failed. Those only cost me $125 in 2012. So I am a Carolina fan until they show me otherwise.
@@Ox78 I've never had any issues with mine! I still have and wear the first pair I bought 10 years ago. The edge of toe lining has frayed some but I attribute that to thicker winter socks. Only started when I started wearing them.
I have wore a pair of the Carolinas for 15 months in the steel toe version in the factory I work in.the soles are pretty shot but they never came loose.i could probably have them re soled if I wanted to.i bought a pair of the thorogoods in the same size just to try.the same width also.the thorogood are weird .they are stupid narrow.the Carolinas are almost a half inch wider than the thorogood.the Carolinas seem to have stronger leather to me.im sticking with the Carolinas .they are more comfortable for me
One question that i still wonder about on all boots and that is if leather filling is better than cork? I wish some one would do a test to see if leather will make the boot fit better longer or if the cork is better. My problem in boots is the inside wearing out not the outside and i wonder if i had a leather filler it would make them last alot longer?
Carolina has stepped up their game these past few years imo! Never cared for them before but i bought a pair of dukes last year and they are one of my fav carbon toed work boots! Insoles were comfy but didn't last very long. Although i always blow out most insoles pretty quickly. Replacement insoles are always a must for me. Keen utility insoles being my fav. Recently bought the Carolina 4X4 waterproof carbon toed boots. Fit was nice. A light tight in the rim of the boot, hoping they break in. Thin stiff insole (Not a fan). See how long they will last?.. One problem i seem to have with boots is being that i am a dominant lefty, left boots never fit me right! The right boots usually always fit me good, but my left foot is slightly larger than my right, so i seem to have weird fit with any left boots. I'm sure some righties have dealt with this issue before with their dominant foot..?! Can anyone relate? Any remedies? Thanks!
I agree for some time they were made In Foreign countries and now their boots in the Amp series are made In The u.s.a. and have definitely changed the quality and shape of the boot. Just bought 2 pairs steel toe and non for causal wear. They feel and look really nice
I’ve been hesitating on pulling the trigger on some thorogoods for, at this point, probably years 😂 My issue is that I’ve had a cheap pair of Georgia boots and I swear, they are some of the best shoes I’ve had, let alone boots. They’ve got some sort of Moc-Toe/Wedge boot so maybe get a pair in for comparison?
I recently made the switch to thorogoods about 8 months ago to see what all the hype was about & honestly haven't been that impressed. It took about 2 weeks to break in but they did finally fit comfortable. What's turned me off is just like u were saying, the front sole is already separating after 8 months & I'm not even hard on them, they were a $250 let down honestly, think I'll try the Carolinas next since the soles are actually sewn!
I sell both boots and even with the extra stitch going through the front of the sole the Thorogood sole holds on a little longer. The Maxwear poly sole also has an advantage over the "softer" rubber vibram soles in that it passes the OSHA slip and oil resistance ratings if you work shop conditions. Really it comes down to fit. The Carolinas run a bit wider.
I’m a carpenter in the refineries here in Houston and the Thorogood moc toe 8in lace ups are the best in my opinion. Only thing is they cost $284.99 and after taxes they cost a little over $300😬
I saw brand new thorogood maxwear moc toes on ebay for like $140 shipped and in the box. so i came here to see if i should maybe buy these instead of the red wing 606 i have on order at the local red wing store for $270. im glad i watched, im going to stick with the red wing that come with all top notch materials and better welt construction that will probably last me 3 to 5 years (with re soling) of 6 days a week trade work and be amazingly comfortable while doing it.
I purchased the carolina tobacco 6in moc toe from Shoeteria for $164.00 free shipping. No break in...absolutely a great boot. 2 days ago I purchased the Thorogood tobacco 6 in moc toe from boot barn for $240.00. Carolina is more comfortable and have a nicer toe in my opinion. For the money obviously carolina wins... but I do like the Thorogood. I work all day in the thorogood boot and I feel like they are durable and feel good. Much better than the $150 wolverine moc toe durashock line, and obviously blows the old Sears die hard out of the building.
I have and use Both, the one difference that I notice is I really think the tongue on the Carolina is more narrow than the thorogood making it somewhat of a pain to keep centered when lacing up. I buy the 8” versions if that matters but it’s something that is basically the only factor between the two of them to me.
Seems like the majority of people where I work have more modern style work boots, while the rest do use heritage style boots. Anyways, just wondering if you could do a video on the Timberland Pro Boondock or the Pro Endurance work boots?
If there is a 2022 Mocktober, please review the new Carolina AMP MX($170) an Irish setter Ashby($150). It looks like the Carolina AMP USA will now be manufactured in Mexico and called the AMP MX. I'm curious if the AMP MX will be as good as the AMP USA, which you compared to the Thorogood.
I think it comes down to fit, Carolina has a more secure heel area and the toe box is wider. Also has less chance of zeroing out if you have a mellower instep .
It’s based more on the Munson last, with that narrower heel and wider toe box, it’s a no-brainer for me. I can’t wear thorogoods at all. Too narrow in the toe and too loose in the heel.
I really wish you would do a non-moc toe comparison between Redwing ad Thorogood. Like the Redwing Dynaforce vs the Thorogood Emporer Toe. Most moc toes are the great for wide feet. Would like to see a traditional work boot comparison.
I didn't know cove shoe owns Carolina's I grew up not far from Martinsburg and worked at cove for probably 6 months I know they make alot of Carolinas but I didn't know they owned it especially seeming as they make alot of Cochran (spelled wrong) boots I can confirm they make the boots from the leather at cove shoe I'm guessing the soles are the major over seas items
What constitutes a 'work' boot? I work in a kitchen and my Redback boots are perfect for the job. Comfortable, hard wearing, non absorbent, non-slip and super easy to clean and maintain.
I’ve put easily 1000 miles on my thorogoods. Never even resoled them or anything! Only issue is the stitching on the toes is coming apart but the boots still work just fine
It also depends what version of the boots you are buying. The Throughgoods you paned across had EH or Electrical Hazard in the tounge. They have a fiberglass shank in order to cut down on electrical conductivity. It doesn't look like you bought the EH version of the Carolina's. I wear a pair of them to work so I know they make them
Buy the Carolinas, invest $17 into the red thorogood insoles. Match made in heaven. The gell portions of the insole almost always come unglued, so I ruber cement it before installing them. Lol zero issues. Carolina boots have gotten my money for a long time now. 17 years in masonry. Now currently into concrete with most of my time spent walking on top of re-bar mats so I'm switching to wedge soles. Tried thorogood boots back in the day only to find that they broke before the break in period was over. 🤷 I've worn Carolinas for 2 plus seasons unless some random puncture happened but they've surpassed most other brands when it came to durability
I am from Fort Worth Texas, I am totally blind. I remember back in the day the movie menace to society the main character his name was Cain he was wearing a gray sweater with black jeans and a pair of Doc Martin boots that were ankle high I remember these models I just don’t remember the style they also made him and brown but the one he was wearing in the movies were black. I was wondering if you would be able to or somebody in this group would might know the style of that boot I was trying to find some are used to wear these when I was a kid this is a great TH-cam channel that you have here. I hope someone could locate this style of Doc Martin boot for me and re-post it here this is easy for me to navigate this format being totally blind. Hope to hear from y’all soon thank you.
Just went through this exact debate but with their steel toe versions of these boots and I left with the Carolinas based on fit more than anything but it doesn't hurt that they were about $50 less out the door. I don't think I'd spend $50 more for a leather counter and cork. Also the Carolina insoles may seem less quality but man they are definitely comfortable out of the box, time will tell if they hold up but they're extremely comfortable for factory insoles.
How they holding up? I’ve got thorogoods and they’re comfortable but they are starting to separate at the front like Weston mentioned is a possibility. Carolinas with the stitch at the front are great
@@andrewmendoza1578 I have a year on them now and the only issue I had is the stitching busted on both boots on the inside side that goes down from the bottom eyelet to the sole...not sure what you call that part but I stitched them back up myself and they've been fine. Not sure why they both came unstitched in this spot but the rest of the boots are holding up so well it felt like a waste to buy something else for this reason alone. It's worth noting that I walk around a factory that has fairly smooth floors, so if you're on rougher surfaces they may wear faster but I'm shocked at how well the soles are wearing, and there's no sigh of the stitching at the toe underneath coming apart. These boots have really sold me on wedge soles for any job where I don't need tons of traction like in mud or ice.

We need a new updated video on best work boot for under $200
Last year I watched as many videos as I could on thorogood boots, your videos in particular helped me decide on them.
Did you buy any new insole
@@brandonwayne2343 no almost 2 years and still comfortable
I do a lot of knee work also-how have the tip of the toe leather held up? Worn thru yet?
How did you cure your plantar fasciitis?
@@naps3386 It eventually just healed itself over time and a lot of ibuprofen for the pain. It’s been 4 years now and every now and then it lets me know it’s there in one foot or the other.
I've had a pair of thurgoods and lasted me a very long time haven't got the Carolinas but I'm going to try them next.
How does the sizing compare between the two?
Where can you find moc toe carolinas around $100? I'll buy some for sure!
I use 550 cord. I remove the strings in the inside. Lasts a long time. The stuff comes in all sorts of colors.
@@sisleymichael That's a really good idea. I've never thought of using 550 cord. Thanks. 😁👍
I've had both. I loved the Carolinas. They felt great the whole 4 years I had them.
My 8 year old thorogoods finally gave out a few months ago. They had two resoles done. They made it that long in the oilfield. So I’d said they were definitely great boots and worth the money.
Thorogood partaking in currently common price gouging !!!!!
James do Carolinas fit true to size or do size down thanks
Same here! Thorogood are very narrow Carolinas have a much better shape and heel cup that holds the boot in place..
@@jeffreykatz1330 I'd say size down..
I love this series! I bought the Thorogood Moc toes after last years video. Absolutely pleased, and I wear them every day. Thanks!
I own both boots and I like the thorogoods a little more.
Agreed.
Which one make you Look taller
Why's that?
@@triplea6174 First, the Carolina lace grommets weren't completely flattened on the inside so it poked my foot. I hammered them down flat and had no problems after that. Second, the under foot feel is just better in the Thorogoods. I alternate my boots everyday and every Monday morning I choose the Thorogoods. I won't argue if anyone says they like the Carolinas because they are also good.
@@Rubio151j thanks for the reply. Went through and just got some thorogood boots hope they serve me well!
Thanks!
Which one has a wider heal? My feet are wide hee to toe.
Must be the cork filling. Cause the steel shank is the only other difference.
@@mexdrago3009thorogoods but narrower toe box
who cares about weight if the Thorogoods are more comfortable?
The toe seam on the moc toe of Irish setters always seems to come undone for me
I wear the Irish Setters myself. I would to see a comparison between those and the almost identical Redwings.
I know that comment is a year old but no way the danners are weak!
Please do a review on the Corcoran historical jumpboot by cutting them in half. They are the cheapest but best Goodyear welted boots out there and they are made in the USA
I would love to see that video. I wore them in the Army from 1978 to 1981.
That is purely your own opinion not actual fact.
@@Cnightz part of why they should be reviewed.
Boots are addictive. I love them.
I live like 30 minutes from the Carolina shoe company in Martinsburg. Super small town but I always went there to get work boots.
Thank you. Ive worked in industry for 20 years and have constantly been let down by so called "work boots" its been a long waste of money... but not with these gems.
how are they holding up, I'm getting my first Thorogood moc steel toe 6" tomorrow.
@@Beto-Bazan going strong. No complaints. I switched the original laces out with parachord, but thats it.
Good point. If you have a wide forefoot, go with the Carolinas. I had to go up to a EE in the Thorogoods, but then my heel was slopping everywhere.
My heel is as wide as my toes
Ate the Carolinas wider in the heel too?
For few more bucks I would've gone with a pair of Rockrooster
Not with rigged el ections and globalists in charge you won’t ever buy American boots again.
I have the Carolinas with the steel toe and they’re really comfortable. Sometimes I forget i even have boots on. So far they’re one of the best boots I’ve worn and have lasted me quite a while
More comfortable than wolverine raider boots?
I have the Carolina’s and couldn’t be happier!
I personally own a pair of thorogoods, but Carolina has the 6 inch moc toe on sale for $166 right now.
It looks like the Carolinas I have are built quite differently from these in this video
Get some boot polish
I just got the thorogood 8" for my working boots. But I want those keen sanjose soft toe for my every day boots. There not 130$ right now there 180-189$ right now and for a while.
I've been watching them on amazon..👀
Only ones that go onsale are the dang aluminum toe.. probaly cause there not selling as many of those.
I cant find the sanjose anywhere locally anymore, big r hasn't ordered them for a year or so..(I shoulda got them last year) 😅
I have a feeling it's like everything else, the company makes a new model and fazes out the last..
I think that's what's happening with this model of keen.
They were the most comfortable boots I tryed on (and I'm picky)
They do have horible reviews and from what I see for good reason.
Soles separating alot.
I think theyd make a great walking boot but not neccesarily a long lasting work boot.
You should include specific model numbers on the boots shown in the video, it would be super helpful to hunt them down later. Thanks!
What about Chippewa? You’ve mentioned owning the lm before but I haven’t seen you cut any. A few years ago Chippewa put out a large number of cool fashionable boots but it seems like they’ve really downgraded their USA made boots and different selection?

I work in asphalt barges. The boots I find to do best with that heat is thorogood. Can’t can’t convince me to wear another brand.
Just ordered a pair of Carolinas. Let's see how they go! They'll be my first moc toe Boot!
The Carolina amp mx comes in black
I have two pairs of the Carolinas. They're fantastic. True to brannock size, lots of room for the toes.
I've had my Carolinas for a year now. They're very comfortable and, my only gripe is that I would prefer a gusseted tongue. They're factory seconds so, I got a steal of a deal at $90.
You ordered from eBay too eh! So have I just now. I hope they're in good condition
Same here, couldn't pass up the factory second price. I've wore thorogoods for the last 3 yrs. So far the Carolinas aren't bad but I like my thorogoods better
I’m thinking of doing the same, $85.00 on eBay
I’ve been waiting for this video, great job keep up the good work!
They were marked down 40%
So far they’ve been great too.
Thanks for helping us tradesman to make a informed decision on work boots. Especially when budget is in play
Thanks I live in Pennsylvania and never realized their boots were made in my state so 😎.
Yup i had that happen to me too. Very awful design flaw. Id rather buy carolinas next time. I got iron age brand for now
Not USA made but the Georgia wedge with the spr Leather are nice. Has the full stitching.
I bought a pair of Thorogood they ok 2 years old still holding up. Best pair of work boots I owned was a pair of last model discontinued Danner or $60 6" all leather boot working on concrete for 12 hour day they felt like a pair of slippers I wish Danner would have stayed with that model
These videos are so sick! Keep up the good work man
I found a par of Georgia boot on a clearance rack in Kohl for some reason like 10 years ago.
I like Thorogood but could not wear them due to the toe box being narrow. Ended up with the Carolinas.
I can see that. I tried on a 10.5 and my pinky toe felt too snug. I went up half a size and these feel great. Guessing where my longest toe is I feel they fit about right with the finger width from the tip.
Glad they fit, I ended up going with the Carolina 8" moc...Cheers
I give it to Carolina boots., I’ve worn both and I have a wide foot and Carolina’s don’t lie when you pick the wide boots. I choose comfort all day
Really excited for the Harley build it's good to see you go back to the roots of this channel
I have the Thorogoods and I love them really comfortable.
Same here!!
Same! I'm on fourth pair. Been wearing them for 10 years now since I switched from spendy red wings.
What about that cotton lining? That’s the only part I’m worried about
@@Ox78 I've never had any issues with mine! I still have and wear the first pair I bought 10 years ago. The edge of toe lining has frayed some but I attribute that to thicker winter socks. Only started when I started wearing them.
@@SM-mj8sj do you work in them? Or do you wear them casual?
My problem in boots is the inside wearing out not the outside and i wonder if i had a leather filler it would make them last alot longer?
as a steel working i kinda like the idea of the metal shank, but i weld and use a torch alot and the stitching on the underside is a turn off.
I have Georgia's they are very comfortable
I would love to see a review on Irish Setters and Chippewa Moc Toes!
Just got a pair of Irish setters last week, I too would like to see some cut open.
I’m a carpenter in the refineries here in Houston and the Thorogood moc toe 8in lace ups are the best in my opinion. Only thing is they cost $284.99 and after taxes they cost a little over $300😬
Thorogood all the way. Not one complaint with my pair. Going on 3 years now. Want a new pair just dont need too yet. Well worth the money spent.
I genuinely enjoy these videos.
Ha, Keeps. My hair was gone was gone in my mis 20's. Been rocking the Jason Statham look for a couple decades now.
I have and use
Both, the one difference that I notice is I really think the tongue on the Carolina is more narrow than the thorogood making it somewhat of a pain to keep centered when lacing up. I buy the 8” versions if that matters but it’s something that is basically the only factor between the two of them to me.
I prefer 8 inch boots myself. Shorter than that, and they look and feel wonky to me.
Can you do a review of vibram rockrooster moc toe? I want to see if that's all they upgraded and what you think of them
It also depends what version of the boots you are buying.
I’ve been waiting a long time for this video
I have been wearing Thorogoods 8" composite toe boots on concrete and ladders and I prefer them over tennis shoes
