  • We present a special feature on Kyudo, or traditional Japanese archery. Unlike western archery, Kyudo is not simply about striking a target, it is about observing the proper etiquette, actions and state of mind. We look into the history of the art and introduce the customs that govern its every aspect, from the instant the archer enters the dojo until the moment they leave.

    11:00 Unlike Westerners practising martial arts at Olympics, there's no loss of self control, unrestrained, childish or proud celebrating.
    Just dignity and control without a flicker of emotion.
    Beautiful.

    The reason why the arrow bends so much during flight is because they are using arrows made of 7001 or 7075 alloy(which is the lowest end kyudo arrows you can get).If they used a much better quality kyudo arrow(carbon or bamboo) the arrow would not bend as much, but will have the tendency to fly to the right. To prevent the arrow from flying right, the archer must have proper "tenouchi" techniques which this archer lacks.
    Those eldery people toward the end of the video is darn good though.

      ..or you could spine your arrow correctly? Am I missing something here? Why under spine your arrow?

    • @kyudodetmold
      @kyudodetmold 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Japanese bowmen in wartimes use hundreds of arrows without a special spine - because all arrows are used only one time! Today you can "spine" your kyudo arrows, it´s no problem with aluminium or carbon-shafts. The weight of the arrow: kg of the bow + 11 gramm. I (66 years, 20 years kyudo) am using 28 gramm arrows with a 17 kg bow.

      @@kyudodetmold because you use khatra when shooting. than the spine is not so important as the arrowweight. (49years, shooting 3 years asiatic/ottoman horsebows with 42kg+) without khatra your untuned arrows fly shitty!

      @oldfrend 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      as i understand it, -do is the sporting school and -jutsu is the combat school; i.e., kyudo is the sport of archery and kyujutsu is the combat skill of killing a man with a bow and arrow. this applies to other forms of combat as well; kendo/kenjutsu; judo/jujutsu; couple others i can't think of atm.

      @@oldfrend Dô is "way", it's the same character as Tao. Jutsu is technique. Dô is used for non-martial non-sport pursuits too, and implies that they do have some higher purpose than just a pastime, an amusement or a purely physical pursuit. Kado (traditional flower arrangement), Chado/Sado (tea). The usual translation in English is indeed "the way of...".

    " Unlike western archery, Kyudo is not simply about striking a target, it is about observing the proper etiquette, actions and state of mind. "
    That's because the proper etiquette and state of mind are implicit. This comment is actually condescending even if wasn't meant to be. Western culture does not explicitly stress these parts. Safety is more explicit than etiquette and state of mind for the reason of the latter is required for success and respect. This is also the way guns/rifles are performed. (Guns/rifles are banned in Japan so no comparison is necessary.)

    • @alestane2
      @alestane2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did only a little bit of Western archery in university, but the main point for me was that the results were a direct and immediate reflection of my concentration; it was very helpful to forget everything else as it provided a feedback, if I was still thinking of my exams or anything else, the arrows would miss a lot.

    • @kyudodetmold
      @kyudodetmold 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Der Kyudo-ka hat sogar 3 "Ankerpunkte" zu beachten: 1) Der Pfeil liegt auf dem Daumen der linken Hand; 2) der Pfeil berührt zwischen Wangenknochen und Mundwinkel die Wange; 3) die Sehne berührt immer an der gleichen Stelle die Brust. So entsteht eine Art "räumliches Dreieck", das beim immer wieder gleichen Zielen die entscheidende Grundlage ist. So erklärt sich auch, dass z. B. Ishikawa-Hanshi (Viedo 1) selbst im Dunkel trifft, wenn er seine Füße zunächst richtig positioniert hat. (Dazu würde im Dunkeln eine auf dem Boden angebrachte Holzlatte ausreichen. Von ähnlichen Hilfen ist in alten Schriften berichtet, wenn man bei Nacht bestimmte Zielpunkte beschießen musste. Dafür wurden vorher diese Markierungen o. ä. bei Tage angelegt.) Der gesamte Körper wird so in den Zielvorgang einbezogen - nicht nur die beiden Hände.
